Warm and humid conditions are driving the development of thunderstorms and rain across
00:04
large parts of the country.
00:06
I'm here at the Bureau with the latest severe weather update to keep you in the loop with
00:09
what is happening.
00:11
This is radar imagery from this morning with a couple of areas of focus for thunderstorms,
00:16
the first being across the tropical north, particularly the top end coast where we have
00:20
seen thunderstorms rumbling away through the morning, with that set to continue for the
00:24
remainder of the day.
00:26
Meanwhile we've also got this band of storms here which has been moving through South Australia
00:29
overnight into parts of Western Victoria this morning.
00:32
It hasn't been generating huge rainfall, up to about 20mm in areas, but it has been creating
00:38
damaging wind gusts through parts of South Australia overnight last night.
00:42
As Friday continues, particularly once we get into the afternoon, we expect storms to
00:46
become much more extensive across the southeast of the country.
00:50
Pay attention to this yellow area here, that's where severe thunderstorms are possible today.
00:56
Severe thunderstorms can generate areas of heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding
01:00
and they can generate more damaging wind gusts, much like what we saw overnight last night.
01:05
The broad region covers a lot of New South Wales, not quite all the way to the coast
01:09
so it does not include Sydney, much of central and western Victoria, including the far northern
01:14
outskirts of Melbourne, and much of southern and central South Australia, including the
01:18
inland suburbs of Adelaide as well.
01:21
Broadly speaking, around much of the rest of the country, thunderstorms to continue
01:24
today across the tropical north and central areas, but the severe thunderstorm risk looks
01:28
less likely in northern Australia.
01:32
As we push through Friday and into the weekend, first we see the risk of storms really boom
01:36
across this part of the country during Friday afternoon, then on Saturday, clears out of
01:41
South Australia, continues around here until about Saturday afternoon.
01:45
We will see some clearer weather coming for the second half of the weekend, although we
01:48
will see the redevelopment of storms in the centre and the north of Australia.
01:53
Rainfall wise, we've got a couple of spots we're watching closely for potential accumulations
01:57
over the next 48 hours, which is what we're seeing on this map here.
02:01
The two spots which are in our higher end, 50mm plus, firstly around these northern areas
02:06
up in the tropics, could definitely see rainfall totals between 50 and 100mm here over the
02:11
next couple of days.
02:12
Then there's a secondary bullseye of heavier rain down here in New South Wales, which is
02:17
a little bit more unusual to occur at this time of year, and that is the reason that
02:22
we have focused the severe weather warning on this region down here.
02:25
We'll zoom in for a slightly closer look, this warning has just been issued late on
02:29
Friday morning, it is a severe weather warning covering both heavy rainfall and damaging
02:34
winds around the western slopes and plains of southern New South Wales, and just across
02:39
the border into the far north-eastern mountains of Victoria.
02:42
Wind gusts could be over 90kmh through here, possibly over 100kmh in those alpine areas,
02:48
and rainfall totals could well be between 40 and 60mm for many, with isolated areas
02:53
80mm or above.
02:56
With those kind of figures in this area we could definitely see damage to loose structures
03:00
like fences and outhouses, we could see some flash flooding with those heavier rainfall
03:04
totals coming in, particularly overnight tonight and into Saturday morning, and the combination
03:10
of strong wind and heavy rain certainly could bring trees down which may cause damage to
03:14
property, could spill over roads, or maybe lead to power outages.
03:19
Fairly active weather as we move from the week to the weekend so stay up to date with
03:23
all the latest weather warnings and forecast information on the Bureau website and app.
03:27
Thanks for watching, have a safe weekend.
