Hello, it's Angus here at the Bureau.
00:03
It is the 2nd of December and we are barely catching our breath after the severe thunderstorm
00:07
outbreak over the weekend just gone brought widespread rain and flooding to eastern states.
00:12
And already on Monday we are seeing the next band of rain and storms develop over central
00:18
parts of Australia.
00:19
As we look at the water vapour imagery, no prizes for spotting where these storms are
00:24
developing.
00:25
It is right in here with all the high moisture content in the atmosphere across southern
00:29
parts of the NT, just sneaking into northern parts of South Australia as well.
00:34
And this is where we are seeing severe storms so I thought the first thing I would do is
00:37
show you the current warnings because this is the current play during the middle of the
00:43
day on Monday.
00:44
It's about 11am Northern Territory time, it's just after midday as I film this, eastern
00:48
daylight time, severe storms moving through the Simpson area of southern NT, just squeaking
00:54
across the border into northern SA as well, that's moving through the likes of Alice Springs
00:58
at the moment.
00:59
Through the remainder of the day today the storms here are going to be drifting this
01:03
way.
01:04
So our thunderstorm forecast map for the rest of the day looks like this, with the red area
01:08
being the most likely spots to see severe storms through Monday afternoon and evening.
01:14
Yellow locations on this map show where severe storms may impact later today and note that
01:18
it gets quite close to Adelaide.
01:20
We potentially could see some stormy weather down there towards the end of the day on Monday.
01:25
Also inland parts of the Top End and the Kimberley, and across into parts of western
01:29
NSW too.
01:32
Locations which do see severe thunderstorms today could see any of the major warning criteria
01:36
including heavy rainfall that brings further flash flooding, damaging or even destructive
01:41
winds that can bring down trees, power lines and damaged houses, and possibly some large
01:46
hailstones, particularly across South Australia where the atmosphere is just slightly cooler.
01:52
For today, most of the activity is focused over relatively remote areas in central parts
01:56
of the country, but as we look ahead to the rest of Monday night and into Tuesday morning
02:01
we're going to see this band of wet and stormy weather drift eastwards.
02:05
Let's pause it here in the early hours of Tuesday morning, we'll see this band moving
02:09
through Melbourne and large parts of Victoria overnight tonight, this is 4am in the morning.
02:14
Also central NSW seeing some wet and stormy conditions, as is central and southern Queensland.
02:20
If we keep playing through the rest of Tuesday morning we'll actually see some of the worst
02:23
of the weather clear out of Victoria, Hobart as well as the rest of Tasmania gets some
02:28
wet conditions, maybe a few storms, and it will continue for inland parts of the eastern
02:33
states.
02:34
So here is the same thunderstorm forecast map but this time we're looking at Tuesday.
02:38
And the broad yellow area shows where we may see severe storms on Tuesday, mostly inland
02:43
parts with a focus on NSW, southern and southwestern Queensland and northern Victoria, a few enhanced
02:49
areas as well as shown in the red, heavy rain and damaging winds possible about the
02:53
Victorian and southern NSW slopes, particularly on the northern slopes of the mountains, and
02:58
potentially some heavy rainfall around northern and northwestern parts of NSW for tomorrow.
03:04
Some of the key impacts which we expect to see from severe storms both on Monday and
03:09
on Tuesday are a continuation of flash flooding as well as possible riverine flooding, both
03:14
of which we saw in abundance over the course of the weekend.
03:18
Worst driving conditions, potential for shut roads, poor visibility and other tricky conditions
03:23
out there on the transport network and fallen trees and branches.
03:27
When the combination of wind and rain kicks in, that can lead to significant impacts as
03:31
well as damaging houses and causing power outages.
03:34
Stay up to date over the next few days with severe thunderstorm warnings and any other
03:38
weather information you need at the Bureau website and app.
03:40
Thanks for watching and stay safe.
