Dangerous, severe thunderstorms and heavy rain for NSW and Victoria

Intense storm systems moving across the east bringing potential for heavy rainfall, localised flooding, and large hailstones.

00:08in Lakes Entrance and Painesville, all thanks to the severe thunderstorms that continue

00:13to ravage parts of the southeast.

00:16And the risk is not over yet, with further heavy rain and severe thunderstorms likely

00:20for NSW and Victoria today and tomorrow.

00:23We'll start with a look at today's thunderstorm forecast map.

00:27On this map, our yellow and red areas show where severe storms are possible, if not likely.

00:32That covers much of central and eastern NSW, including Sydney, the ACT and Canberra, and

00:38pushes down into much of northern and eastern Victoria.

00:42In these severe thunderstorm areas, we could see the heavy rainfall that would lead to

00:46flash flooding, the large hail and damaging wind gusts.

00:50But we do have a key area of focus today, which is mainly to the west of the NSW ranges.

00:56In those areas, across some of the southern and inland parts of the state, the central

01:01west slopes and ranges, and parts of the northeast, including parts of the Upper Hunter, we may

01:05see high-end severe thunderstorms today, very dangerous systems that could bring destructive

01:11wind gusts in excess of 125kmh, giant-sized hail, and locally intense rainfall that could

01:18quickly lead to life-threatening flash flooding.

01:21Communities throughout the southeast should be aware of today's thunderstorm risks, but

01:25particularly to those areas to the west of the ranges.

01:28Now, of course, flash flooding is a key concern when heavy rainfall is playing a part with

01:33our storm forecast.

01:34That can quickly lead to dangerous driving conditions, especially if we have those gusty

01:39to damaging winds and hail ongoing at the same time.

01:42And of course, the winds, hail and rain may all lead to damage of crops and vegetation,

01:47trees and even about your property, so be aware of that risk of extra debris on the

01:51roads or about your own property through the course of today thanks to those thunderstorms.

01:56We also have a severe weather warning in place for parts of Victoria and NSW.

02:01That covers most of Gippsland in Victoria and the south coast in NSW.

02:06Heavy rainfall in these areas is likely to be a little more widespread over the next

02:10couple of days, rainfall totals easily reaching 30-80mm, isolated falls up to 120mm possible.

02:19For Victoria, that more widespread risk of heavy rain continues today and is likely to

02:23start easing back overnight tonight.

02:26But for NSW, SE NSW, that risk is likely to continue well into tomorrow as well.

02:33Now the driving factor of this wet stormy weather is a low pressure trough lying through

02:37NSW.

02:39That trough is helping to draw in moisture from the north and off the ocean, feeding

02:43it into any showers, storms and rain areas that develop.

02:47It's fairly stagnant, it's not moving anywhere very quickly which is why we're seeing this

02:50risk of storms and rainfall continuing day after day.

02:55It's really showing the focus area through eastern Victoria and SE NSW continuing as

03:00we go into tomorrow and rain continues about that south east coast.

03:04As we push towards Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday however, we are likely to start seeing some

03:09clearance in the rain through Victoria as those showers and storms mostly start contracting

03:14to NE NSW and SE Qld.

03:17Now a quick look at tomorrow's thunderstorm forecast.

03:21Severe storms are once again possible across much of the east, this time including some

03:25of those border areas near Qld as well.

03:28We do have severe storms likely, the red areas on this map, across parts of far eastern Victoria,

03:34SE NSW and northern inland NSW again.

03:38Heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hail will all continue a risk throughout the east

03:42tomorrow as that system continues to stay in place, tapping into that unstable air mass

03:48and all of that moisture.

03:51This is a significant risk today and tomorrow, so be sure to stay on top of all of the forecast
