Intense rainfall over much of NSW, South Australia, and Western Australia

A band of heavy rain is moving across the country from coast to coast, with intense falls to hit over the first week of May, 2024.

00:00Showers and rain areas to continue impacting not only parts of eastern but

00:04also northern New South Wales. Now looking at yesterday and overnight we

00:09saw widespread areas of rain around the central and Hunter Coast with

00:13widespread falls on the coast of the Hunter of around 50 to 70 millimetres

00:17and a few falls up to 90 millimetres. We also saw from heavy falls on coastal

00:22parts of Sydney around 40 millimetres at Bondi and 70

00:26millimetres around Monovale. We're also seeing some showers as well across

00:30northern areas. Now these coastal showers will continue in the coming days but

00:34our eyes are starting to move towards the latter part of the week and into the

00:37weekend. The reason for that is here on the water vapor imagery. This gives us an

00:42idea of what's going on in the upper levels of the atmosphere. Now what I want

00:45to draw your eyes to is this area of dark grey and orange over the South

00:49Australia area. That's a developing upper level low pressure system. Now as that

00:54continues to track towards the east over the coming days it's going to

00:57interact with some moisture coming in for the easterlies and develop rain

01:00through inland areas and then spread across to eastern parts of the state as

01:04we move into the latter part of the weekend. So let's look at that in more

01:08detail. Today the focus will just be some coastal showers along the New South

01:12Wales coast, just an isolated shower or storm through inland areas. Then as we

01:17move into tomorrow that upper low that I mentioned is going to interact with more

01:20moisture on tomorrow afternoon to bring showers and thunderstorms through parts

01:24of New South Wales and southern Queensland with that onshore flow

01:28continuing to bring showers across eastern New South Wales. Then we start to

01:33see things really ramp up on Friday as we see more moisture get fed into this

01:37upper low. It's going to bring a band of rain and thunderstorms through much of

01:40inland New South Wales and southern inland Queensland and some of those

01:44falls could be in that 15 to 25 millimetres and maybe in isolated falls

01:48even higher than that with coastal showers continuing particularly around

01:52the central coast. Then as we move into the weekend we'll see that upper low

01:56start moving to eastern parts of New South Wales and southeast Queensland

01:59bringing widespread rain and shower and thunderstorm activity to much of

02:04northern central New South Wales and even to southeast parts of Queensland

02:08as well on Saturday and then slowly moving offshore on Sunday but

02:12onshore flow continuing to bring rain and showers to the coast of New South

02:17Wales. So how does that look like from total rainfall over the coming days?

02:20Well over the next five days we're likely to see widespread 15 to 25

02:25millimetres and because the isolated falls up to 50 millimetres through some

02:28areas of northern New South Wales. Now this is just one solution and one where

02:34we could see those rainfall numbers in different parts of the state at

02:37different values. But note the main focus will definitely be along the coast of

02:41New South Wales particularly the Mid North Hunter and around the Sydney area

02:44where we could see five-day rainfall totals in that 50 to 100 millimetre

02:49range with isolated falls even higher than that. So if you're out and about
