A very wet weekend on the way for New South Wales as rain and possible thunderstorms spread
00:05
across large parts of the state.
00:07
But even before we reach the weekend, a continuation of the showery weather that we've been seeing
00:12
for the last several days, all the way along the coast, all the way from even southern
00:16
Queensland right down to the south coast of New South Wales, more showers, dreary conditions,
00:21
we could see another 10 to 20mm today and tomorrow.
00:25
But our interest in terms of upcoming rainfall is not this patchy cloud along the coastline,
00:29
bringing those showers, it's what's going on over here near the South Australia, Queensland,
00:34
New South Wales border corner where we have seen some cloud develop on Thursday morning.
00:39
So far not a lot of rain associated with that, but that will change.
00:43
Pushing through into Thursday afternoon we'll start to see the wet weather really build
00:47
in the far north west of New South Wales, across the border into southern Queensland,
00:52
parts of South Australia too, but really it is New South Wales that is getting the focus
00:56
of the heavy rain and storms.
00:57
Thursday and then in particular on Friday, also note on Friday how it starts to shift
01:03
eastwards.
01:04
Now by the end of the day on Friday, by the end of the working week, the rain is still
01:08
over the interior and the north of New South Wales and along the coast a continuation of
01:13
the spotty showery weather.
01:15
That will change this weekend though as we now go into Saturday, we will see this broad
01:19
area of rain and possible storms move further eastwards.
01:23
By the middle of the day on Saturday it's starting to affect the central tablelands,
01:27
the mountains, the slopes, the plains, and by Saturday evening, 6pm or so, we'll start
01:32
to see those heavier falls hit the coastline, and then through the rest of Saturday, all
01:36
through the night into Sunday morning, and even much of the day on Sunday we'll start
01:40
to see that heavy rain really affect these coastal areas.
01:44
That includes the likes of Wollongong, Sydney, Newcastle, up through Port Macquarie and the
01:48
mid north coast.
01:49
All of these places are in line for a very wet weekend from about Saturday afternoon
01:54
right through until the end of the day on Sunday.
01:56
Even into Monday we could see these strong onshore winds pushing further rain into Sydney
02:01
and the Illawarra.
02:02
Those are probably the two districts that we're looking at most closely as they could
02:06
see some of the heaviest rainfall of anywhere in the state.
02:09
So how much rain are we talking this weekend?
02:11
Let's chuck on the accumulations and no surprise that Thursday, Friday, heavier falls in the
02:16
north west, we could see 40-50mm in places, just some spotty showery stuff near the coast.
02:21
But in the weekend the heavier falls do indeed reach the coastline and in fact we could see
02:26
some quite heavy falls through the Hunter Coast, the Sydney Metro Coast and the Illawarra
02:30
Coast.
02:31
We're into the red areas showing 100mm plus for some of these coastal districts.
02:38
And if we do see triple digits, 100-150mm, not out of the question here, that is certainly
02:43
enough to lead to areas of flooding.
02:45
We could well see some impacts on the ground as we see the heavy rain through the course
02:49
of the weekend and into early next week.
02:52
Now this is still several days away so there are no warnings issued yet but if you are
02:57
in New South Wales, particularly along the coast, keep half an eye on your weather forecast
03:01
for this weekend, keep half an eye on those severe weather warnings because it's a situation
03:06
like this where we may well issue some heavy rainfall warnings in coming days if it looks
03:10
like it will be bad enough.
03:11
So stay up to date with the latest for this weekend through our website or on our app
03:15
and we'll keep those updates rolling your way on social media too.
