Hello, Miriam at the Bureau here with an update on the rain and thunderstorms moving across
00:05
southeastern parts of Australia today. They're associated with a significant rain band which
00:11
moved through parts of southeastern South Australia and western Victoria in the past 24 hours,
00:16
bringing us moderate rainfall totals. The rain band is now sitting across central Victoria
00:22
and Tasmania, with more scattered showers and storms across much of New South Wales.
00:28
It's all associated with a low pressure system that we can see rotating to the west of Tasmania
00:33
here. Now, this system is moving quite quickly, which means conditions are clearing relatively
00:40
rapidly after it crosses by. We can see this already through western Victoria, which is seeing
00:45
much sunnier weather after a very wet and stormy start to the day. So how will the rest of today
00:51
look? Well, the trough which is associated with this rain band or driving this rain band is
00:57
currently lying just to the east of Melbourne, and through the rest of today it will continue to move
01:02
east, bringing this rain into eastern Victoria, eastern New South Wales and eastern parts of
01:08
Tasmania. A few patchy showers behind the trough, but generally we'll see clearing conditions,
01:14
particularly across the mainland of Australia for areas including the Melbourne metro area.
01:20
What's important to note though is that through this afternoon, the risk of heavier falls is
01:25
still persisting through parts of Victoria and southern New South Wales. It is still requiring
01:31
a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding. Now, it covers
01:36
northeastern Victoria and southeastern parts of New South Wales, and in that warning area we're
01:41
more likely to see widespread moderate to heavy falls, which are more likely to bring about that
01:47
flash flooding. It is a hazardous situation which may quickly cut off roads and access routes and
01:53
cause minor flash flooding issues. It is also worth remembering that thunderstorms are playing
01:59
a mix in the weather today as well. They're largely isolated to scattered at the moment,
02:05
but they do have the potential to become severe, bringing further heavy to locally intense rainfall
02:11
and more flash flooding, as well as damaging winds and the risk of large hail. If we see any storms
02:17
today that do become severe, we will be issuing severe thunderstorm warnings on top of the severe
02:23
weather warning that's already current, and these may impact much of Victoria, New South Wales and
02:28
Tasmania. So how will this track after today? Well, the trough will continue to move off the east
02:36
coast, with generally dry conditions expected for mainland southeastern Australia through tomorrow,
02:42
just a few coastal showers. Fairly similar conditions up the south coast of New South Wales,
02:48
but more active showers and thunderstorms will persist across northeast New South Wales and
02:54
southeast Queensland. The other exception to the drying trend is going to be Tasmania, which may
03:00
see some further heavier falls through tomorrow as well, as the low pressure system clips the state
03:07
and brings some complex weather with it. As we go through Thursday afternoon and into Friday,
03:13
we'll see more of that clearing trend through the southeast, impacting Tasmania as well. However,
03:19
showers and storms likely to persist through northeast New South Wales and southern Queensland
03:24
into the end of the week as well. Heavy rainfall is on the forecast for today, with the risk of
03:30
severe storms as well, so it's essential to keep up to date via the Bureau's website or the BOM
03:35
social media. We'll catch you next time. [Music]
