Hello, Miriam at the Bureau of Meteorology with your national weather forecast for tomorrow,
00:04
Thursday the 23rd of January.
00:07
Tomorrow's weather map shows us two main weather features of interest.
00:10
A horseshoe low-pressure trough that's arcing around the continent and a high-pressure system
00:16
sitting over the Bight.
00:17
Now, to the north of our low-pressure trough, we're seeing showers and thunderstorms continuing
00:22
in parts.
00:23
To the south of our trough, it is drier, but that high-pressure system is working together
00:27
with the trough to help hold a significant amount of heat over the Australian continent.
00:32
So we are seeing heatwaves ongoing across many areas, particularly through the southwest
00:37
of the country and through the northeast.
00:41
Let's take a state-by-state look at all of that now, starting with Queensland.
00:45
So hot conditions continuing across western, central and southern Queensland, heatwaves
00:49
are ongoing.
00:51
We are also likely to see showers and thunderstorms ongoing through northern and eastern parts
00:56
of the state, with the risk tomorrow of severe thunderstorms through parts of the central
01:00
and southeast inland.
01:02
Now those severe storms could bring damaging to locally destructive wind gusts and large
01:07
to giant-sized hail.
01:09
We urge residents right across the southeast to keep a close eye out for any warning updates
01:14
through the course of tomorrow.
01:15
For Brisbane, we are looking at a partly cloudy day with a top of 33 degrees.
01:20
New South Wales can expect some showers continuing along coastal parts, with the risk of some
01:25
storms in those northeastern areas.
01:28
Now storms in the northeast may become severe through the afternoon and evening as well.
01:33
We could see the damaging winds and large hail in the far northeast, as well as some
01:37
more moderate rainfall totals.
01:39
Moderate rainfall totals are also possible through southeastern parts of the state, with
01:43
showers ramping up a little bit later in the day.
01:46
Now it will be milder along those coastal areas in the wake of today's cool change,
01:51
but the heat is ongoing across those inland and western parts of the state.
01:56
For Sydney tomorrow, we're looking at a shower or two and a top of 25 degrees.
01:59
For Canberra, a top of 26.
02:02
Down in Victoria, we're looking at a mild and mostly cloudy day, with a few showers
02:06
passing through mostly to the south of the ranges, although we will see those showers
02:11
ramping up a little bit across eastern parts of the state later on.
02:14
For Melbourne though, it will be a mostly dry day with a top of 21 degrees.
02:20
Showers extending from northern through central and into parts of eastern Tasmania tomorrow,
02:25
with generally low rainfall totals away from the north coast and the central plateau.
02:30
Elsewhere, it will be a partly to mostly cloudy day.
02:33
For Hobart, we are looking at a cooler top of 18 degrees.
02:38
South Australia can expect low intensity heatwaves ongoing tomorrow across northern and western
02:43
parts of the state, severe intensity through the far northwest.
02:47
It will be quite a bit milder along the south coast however, with the chance of a few isolated
02:52
showers in the southeast, not delivering too much in terms of rainfall however.
02:57
For Adelaide, we're heading for a partly cloudy day and a top of 26 degrees.
03:02
Western Australia is going to see the intense heat continuing, with temperatures soaring
03:06
once again into the high 30s to low 40s for many areas, particularly across those central
03:12
and southwestern parts, where those severe to locally extreme heatwaves are ongoing.
03:17
We're also going to see the chance of a few showers or thunderstorms to the west of our
03:22
low pressure trough, impacting parts of the Pilbara, Gascoyne and the southwest land division.
03:27
Now, not too much rainfall is expected from those storms, so dry lightning will also be
03:32
a risk through tomorrow.
03:34
For Perth, we're heading for a mostly sunny top of 40 degrees tomorrow.
03:39
Through the Northern Territory, we've got isolated showers and thunderstorms ongoing
03:43
across those northern areas, as well as across northern parts of Western Australia.
03:48
We could see some gusty winds with storms across parts of the Top End.
03:52
Through those southern and inland areas, low intensity heatwaves are developing once again,
03:57
severe intensity through far southwestern parts of the Territory.
04:01
For Darwin, we're heading for a shower or two tomorrow, possible thunderstorm and a
04:04
top of 33 degrees.
04:07
Now, you can find the detailed forecast for your area via the Bureau's website, the
04:11
BOM Weather App or via our social media.
04:13
Have a great night and we'll catch you next time.
