00:00Severe thunderstorms could bring damaging wind, heavy rain and large hail to parts of
00:04northern New South Wales and southeast Queensland today and once again tomorrow.
00:09Let's get into it and we'll see one of the driving factors for thunderstorms on Tuesday
00:14is a coastal trough, this dashed blue line here.
00:17To the south of that we have cold southerlies, that's moving up the New South Wales coast
00:21and into Queensland a little bit later on Tuesday.
00:23That trough will get some support from the upper atmosphere and those storms are expected
00:27to develop from mid-afternoon today through until this evening and then once again on
00:31Wednesday, around the middle of the day.
00:34Many areas could see severe thunderstorms so we're going to put on our thunderstorm
00:37outlook map for Tuesday and I'll just remind you what the colours mean.
00:41The green areas show where we might see run-of-the-mill non-severe thunderstorms, it's the yellow
00:46and the red areas that I want to draw your attention to, that's where we could see severe
00:50thunderstorms.
00:51In New South Wales that means the mid-north coast and the northern rivers area.
00:55For Queensland, it's mostly about the southeast, also pushing up into the Wide Bay Burnett
01:00District.
01:01The red area here shows where severe thunderstorms are likely to occur on Tuesday afternoon or
01:06evening, that's the highest risk area.
01:09Notice it is pulled a little bit away from the coast, meaning Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine
01:13Coast do fall outside of that greatest risk area and it's tending more towards inland
01:18places like Ipswich and up towards the far east of the Darling Downs.
01:22If we see severe thunderstorms on Tuesday on the New South Wales side of the border,
01:26the primary threats are damaging wind gusts over 90km an hour and large hailstones greater
01:31than 2cm across.
01:33If we see these storms on the Queensland side of the border today, not only could we see
01:37the damaging wind and the large hail, we could get areas of heavy rain that lead to flash
01:41flooding.
01:43Storms are expected to develop through the afternoon hours and could go well into the
01:46evening on Tuesday.
01:48Now a look at Wednesday's map for the same area, and we see the activity has shifted
01:52slightly northwards.
01:54That means that across the north eastern coast of New South Wales, thunderstorm activity
01:58subsides on Wednesday, and even in Queensland, the focal point shifts a little bit north.
02:04The highest risk area, once again in the red, where severe thunderstorms are likely, is
02:09a bit further inland too, west of Toowoomba and east of Roma, but we do see that yellow
02:13area where severe thunderstorms are possible, pushing out towards the coast.
02:18And once again on Wednesday, wind, hail and heavy rainfall are all a possibility, in particular
02:23that heavy rain could hit the coast north of Brisbane, especially around that Sunshine
02:27Coast area.
02:29Some of the most significant storm impacts expected, trees down which could cause damage
02:33and power outages, dangerous driving conditions, whether that's because of high winds or potentially
02:39heavy rain causing flash flooding and poor visibility, and we could just see damage to
02:43properties, cars or any outdoor furniture, fences and the like across your property.
02:49A quick look now to Thursday, as we're going to see further showers along this coast, but
02:53the intensity and severe thunderstorm activity is expected to subside for most places on
02:58Thursday, it's just more of a standard showery day across the east coast of the country,
03:03and over the next three days, remember, thunderstorms Tuesday, thunderstorms Wednesday, regular
03:08showers on Thursday, this is how much rain we might get.
03:1120 to 40 millimetres through many areas of northeastern New South Wales and central and
03:16southeastern Queensland, with the focal point for rain looking to be this coastline here,
03:20Sunshine Coast up towards Gympie, where we could see between 70 and 100 millimetres over
03:24the next couple of days, likely to see some of those rain gauges there pick up triple
03:28digits in terms of how much rainfall they receive between now and Thursday.
03:33Stay up to date with the forecast and any severe thunderstorm warnings that do get issued
03:36today at the Bureau website and app, thanks for watching, stay safe.
03:41Thanks for watching.
