The severe weather season is well and truly underway with severe thunderstorms
00:03
forecast across multiple states today and tomorrow a peak storm and rain day
00:09
across southern parts of Queensland including the southeast and northeast
00:13
New South Wales as well. So we'll start off by getting straight
00:17
into the thunderstorm outlook for Monday so that's for today
00:21
where thunderstorms are possible right across Australia.
00:25
However severe thunderstorms this yellow area extending from WA
00:29
through the interior into southern Queensland and northeast
00:33
New South Wales. Now these severe storms may bring heavy
00:36
rainfall that could lead to flash flooding
00:39
and damaging wind gusts so wind gusts in excess of 90 kilometers per hour.
00:44
As we move into tomorrow however the thunderstorm outlook shows that
00:48
severe thunderstorms are still possible right across the country
00:51
but focusing in on the east where a peak day
00:54
is expected for Queensland. The severe storms may bring damaging winds and
00:59
heavy rainfall again but for northeast New South Wales we
01:03
have this red area here where severe thunderstorms are likely
01:07
and may bring large hail damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Now grounds
01:13
across the region are very wet and catchments swollen so
01:16
they can respond very quickly to any rainfall even short bursts of
01:21
moderate rainfall could see a very fast response from the river systems.
01:26
So community impacts could include an increased risk in flash and riverine
01:31
flooding which can create dangerous driving
01:33
conditions while the large hail and damaging winds
01:37
could bring down trees and power lines causing power outages
01:41
and also damage to property. So let's just take a look at how this
01:46
plays out this so this is from this afternoon we can see
01:50
these hit and miss showers and storms extending across
01:53
the country but focusing in on the east. Later on
01:57
tonight slow moving rain areas may start to
02:00
develop particularly about the Darling Downs and
02:03
as we move into tomorrow morning those rain areas
02:08
also potentially extending into the Sunshine Coast
02:11
and all the way down as far south as the Coffs Coast of New South Wales.
02:17
So they've got the embedded showers and thunderstorms as well as those
02:21
rain areas. Now as we move into Wednesday
02:26
the showers and storms will push into the central and eastern parts of
02:29
Queensland with again the potential for severe
02:32
thunderstorms and Thursday another pulse of afternoon shower and
02:36
storm activity that extends into the inland areas.
02:41
Now there are already a number of flood watches out including minor and moderate
02:45
flood warnings. We've got the Peru and the Warrego River
02:49
in Queensland and it's just highlighting how swollen the river
02:52
systems are already across large parts of southern Queensland
02:56
but also northeast parts of New South Wales.
02:59
So it's important if you live within these areas if you can keep an eye on
03:03
the radar or stay up to date with the latest warnings by the Bureau's website
03:06
app or social media and as always listen to the advice from your local
03:10
emergency services. Bye for now.
