Severe thunderstorms forecast for multiple states

Thunderstorms forecast right across Australia from Broome through Alice Springs through to Brisbane.

00:00The severe weather season is well and truly underway with severe thunderstorms

00:03forecast across multiple states today and tomorrow a peak storm and rain day

00:09across southern parts of Queensland including the southeast and northeast

00:13New South Wales as well. So we'll start off by getting straight

00:17into the thunderstorm outlook for Monday so that's for today

00:21where thunderstorms are possible right across Australia.

00:25However severe thunderstorms this yellow area extending from WA

00:29through the interior into southern Queensland and northeast

00:33New South Wales. Now these severe storms may bring heavy

00:36rainfall that could lead to flash flooding

00:39and damaging wind gusts so wind gusts in excess of 90 kilometers per hour.

00:44As we move into tomorrow however the thunderstorm outlook shows that

00:48severe thunderstorms are still possible right across the country

00:51but focusing in on the east where a peak day

00:54is expected for Queensland. The severe storms may bring damaging winds and

00:59heavy rainfall again but for northeast New South Wales we

01:03have this red area here where severe thunderstorms are likely

01:07and may bring large hail damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Now grounds

01:13across the region are very wet and catchments swollen so

01:16they can respond very quickly to any rainfall even short bursts of

01:21moderate rainfall could see a very fast response from the river systems.

01:26So community impacts could include an increased risk in flash and riverine

01:31flooding which can create dangerous driving

01:33conditions while the large hail and damaging winds

01:37could bring down trees and power lines causing power outages

01:41and also damage to property. So let's just take a look at how this

01:46plays out this so this is from this afternoon we can see

01:50these hit and miss showers and storms extending across

01:53the country but focusing in on the east. Later on

01:57tonight slow moving rain areas may start to

02:00develop particularly about the Darling Downs and

02:03as we move into tomorrow morning those rain areas

02:08also potentially extending into the Sunshine Coast

02:11and all the way down as far south as the Coffs Coast of New South Wales.

02:17So they've got the embedded showers and thunderstorms as well as those

02:21rain areas. Now as we move into Wednesday

02:26the showers and storms will push into the central and eastern parts of

02:29Queensland with again the potential for severe

02:32thunderstorms and Thursday another pulse of afternoon shower and

02:36storm activity that extends into the inland areas.

02:41Now there are already a number of flood watches out including minor and moderate

02:45flood warnings. We've got the Peru and the Warrego River

02:49in Queensland and it's just highlighting how swollen the river

02:52systems are already across large parts of southern Queensland

02:56but also northeast parts of New South Wales.

02:59So it's important if you live within these areas if you can keep an eye on
