Hello there. Welcome to your Wednesday morning weather update from the Met Office. The sun
00:05
may be rising, but temperatures are struggling through this morning. It has been a cold start
00:09
to the day. Now, yesterday, severe gales across the north-east of Scotland and some persistent
00:14
rain all courtesy of this area of low pressure. And this low, the position of it, continues
00:18
to affect our weather through the next few days. It's dumbbelling around low towards
00:23
the north, dragging in then this stream of cold air from the Arctic, extending right
00:28
the way down the country. And what that means, showers, some sunshine and a cold wind. It
00:33
may be mid-September, but we are talking wind chill today. Some sunshine in shelter across
00:38
eastern Scotland, north-east England. But look at these showers frequent across the
00:41
west there, and they're running in across northern Ireland, north-west England, northern
00:45
parts of Wales as well. Now, to the south, yes, it is a chilly start to the day, but
00:50
it will be a bright one with some sunshine coming through and a dry morning here as well.
00:56
So through the morning, we watch as these showers continue. They'll be frequent and
01:00
heavy across northern and western areas, with the risk of hail, the outside chance of thunder.
01:06
And over the highest ground of Scotland, 900 metres say, we could see a little bit of snow
01:12
as well. The wind will be a feature of the weather throughout the day, particularly exposed
01:17
to the north-west wind across more northern and western areas. And the persistent rain
01:21
across Shetland will be replaced by showers through the afternoon. Showers will develop
01:26
elsewhere as well, so you could see the odd heavier one further south and east through
01:31
the day, with a mix of clouds and sun as we enter Wednesday afternoon into evening time.
01:38
Let's take a look at these temperatures then. Well, across Scotland and northern Ireland,
01:42
coming in around 12 or 13 Celsius. Colder with that wind, feeling colder, should I say,
01:47
at the south, 14 to 16 degrees Celsius. So wherever you are, wrap up if you're heading
01:52
out and about and watch out for those showers, which will continue through this evening and
01:57
overnight. But they'll tend to fade away inland. Frequent, though, across more northern and
02:03
western areas. And look at this relentless winds, particularly across the far north and
02:07
north-east of Scotland. Inland, though, temperatures plummeting to four or five degrees Celsius.
02:13
So that means even for the glens of Scotland, we could see a touch of air frost in one or
02:18
two spots. But Thursday dawns bright with some sunshine. Winds won't be as blustery
02:24
across inland areas. Showers, particularly along the coastline, they may develop inland,
02:29
but there'll be some drier interludes and a mix of clouds and sunshine yet again. Temperatures
02:33
14 or 15 in the south. Your outlook then through Friday. One or two light passing showers in
02:38
the far north-west. Generally speaking, it's a dry day. A ridge of high pressure is moving
02:42
in, so a cold start with a localised frost. But with that, we'll see some sunshine. All
02:47
change, though, as we head into the weekend from the north-west. Have a lovely day. I'll
02:52
see you again soon.
