00:00Met Office, red weather warnings are rare.

00:03We only issue them when we think there's a threat to life

00:06from the severe weather that's on the way.

00:07And this is all tied in with storm Eunice

00:09arriving on Friday.

00:11We've got a fair few showers across Scotland

00:13early on on Thursday across northern parts of the UK.

00:16But out in the Atlantic, doesn't look much at this stage.

00:19But this massive cloud is developing at the moment

00:22into a potent storm.

00:25Eunice will be spreading its way up

00:28towards the islands through the course of the night.

00:30And then look at the isobars really squeezing together

00:32on that southern flank.

00:33And we're particularly concerned about those winds

00:36as they pick up, particularly across South Wales and parts

00:38of southwest England.

00:39But everywhere, we'll experience some very strong winds

00:43from storm Eunice during Friday, with the possible exception

00:47of the far north of Scotland.

00:48We'll get on to the details of the warning in just a moment.

00:51We've got to get through the rest of Thursday first of all.

00:53There are some showers still across northern Scotland,

00:56some wet and at times windy weather here.

00:58Not as windy as yesterday, of course.

01:00Storm Dudley has now cleared away.

01:01But blustery, but bright for eastern Scotland,

01:04northeast England.

01:04Some good spells of sunshine across the south.

01:07A few showers drifting into northwest England

01:09and northern Ireland.

01:11Temperature-wise, about average for the time of year

01:13across the north, feeling colder with the breeze,

01:15a little bit milder further south.

01:17And as I said, those winds quite a bit lighter

01:19than they were yesterday, easing down through the day.

01:23But then they're going to pick up tonight

01:25as we start to see storm Eunice arriving.

01:27The cloud moving in initially through the evening,

01:30then the wet weather spreads in.

01:31Some heavy rain for northern Ireland,

01:32really quickly turning to snow here overnight.

01:35That could cause some disruption.

01:37And we'll also see snow over the hills of northern England

01:39and southern Scotland, perhaps some getting down

01:42to lower levels.

01:43But it's the winds that really are

01:44the cause for concern through the night,

01:46and more particularly on Friday morning

01:49as they start to strengthen.

01:50Bringing mild air, so it's going to be a mild air

01:52across the south.

01:53We could see temperatures as low as minus 6

01:55in some rural parts of northern Scotland with a frost here.

01:59But as I said, it really is all about the winds

02:02through the morning as the storm system itself heads its way

02:04across northern Ireland into southern Scotland.

02:06It's on the southern flank where that's

02:08squeezing the ice bars through tomorrow morning, 5, 6, 7

02:12o'clock in particular, pushing those winds up

02:14through the Bristol Channel.

02:16Then we'll see some strong winds developing

02:18as the storm starts to head out into the North Sea

02:20across northwest England, and they'll

02:21push down into the Midlands and southeast England as well.

02:25So it's going on through most of Friday,

02:27an amber warning covering most of England and Wales,

02:30a yellow warning further north for snow.

02:34But it's really this red weather warning

02:36that's giving us, as I said, the most cause for concern,

02:38a rare red warning for the coastal strip of Wales

02:41and the coast of southwest England,

02:44the north coast in particular.

02:45Gusts here, 80, 90, maybe more than that.

02:47We could easily see in exposed areas,

02:49gusts up to 100 miles an hour.

02:51Along with that, a storm surge, dangerous waves,

02:54coastal flooding is likely.

02:56Right across this amber warning area,

02:58though, we could at times see gusts even

03:00in land of 60 to maybe 70 miles an hour,

03:03potentially stronger than that as the storm starts

03:05to clear away later on.

03:07Then we have the yellow warning further north,

03:08some strong winds here, but also that snow, an extra hazard.

03:12Low levels, hard to say, but we could see as much as 5

03:15centimetres in some places.

03:17More of a higher level issue over hills

03:20where that snow will be blowing around,

03:22so blizzards and some pretty treacherous conditions

03:24on the higher routes.

03:26But further south, a real risk to life

03:28with that red warning in place across parts of the southwest.

03:31There's the picture for the morning.

03:33Wet weather across eastern parts,

03:35snow moving northwards across eastern Scotland,

03:37so there could be some problems here as well.

03:39Another band of rain swings through

03:41as the winds then start to strengthen

03:42over northwest England, down through the Midlands

03:44and in towards the southeast later on on Friday,

03:47sort of late morning into the middle of the afternoon

03:50before the whole system starts to pull away.

03:53Still some snow falling across eastern Scotland,

03:55but the winds just steadily easing that notch,

03:57so no longer becoming damaging and dangerous

04:01by the end of Friday.

04:02But a lot to get through before then, of course.

04:05Plenty of sunshine actually in the afternoon

04:06across parts of the south.

04:07Obviously, it's going to be very gusty indeed,

04:09and that will have an impact on the temperatures early

04:11in the day.

04:11We could get to double figures, but by the afternoon,

04:14five to eight degrees further south,

04:16just one or two further north and feeling colder,

04:19obviously, with the strength of the wind.

04:21We're not done there either,

04:22because more wet and windy weather

04:24will swing in through the weekend.

04:25Yes, Storm Eunice clears away on Friday evening,

04:28but plenty of showers packing in with the colder air.

04:30They'll have some snow mixed in,

04:32northwest England, Northern Ireland, western Scotland,

04:34so things could well turn icy on Friday night.

04:37And then we are looking at further spells

04:39of wet and windy weather during this weekend,

04:42so we need to keep an eye on these weather systems

04:44continuing to come in.

04:46A strong jet stream at the moment

04:47powering further low pressure systems,

04:49bringing strong winds, spells of rain,

04:51and yes, a bit more snow in places as well.
