Met Office, red weather warnings are rare.
00:03
We only issue them when we think there's a threat to life
00:06
from the severe weather that's on the way.
00:07
And this is all tied in with storm Eunice
00:09
arriving on Friday.
00:11
We've got a fair few showers across Scotland
00:13
early on on Thursday across northern parts of the UK.
00:16
But out in the Atlantic, doesn't look much at this stage.
00:19
But this massive cloud is developing at the moment
00:22
into a potent storm.
00:25
Eunice will be spreading its way up
00:28
towards the islands through the course of the night.
00:30
And then look at the isobars really squeezing together
00:32
on that southern flank.
00:33
And we're particularly concerned about those winds
00:36
as they pick up, particularly across South Wales and parts
00:38
of southwest England.
00:39
But everywhere, we'll experience some very strong winds
00:43
from storm Eunice during Friday, with the possible exception
00:47
of the far north of Scotland.
00:48
We'll get on to the details of the warning in just a moment.
00:51
We've got to get through the rest of Thursday first of all.
00:53
There are some showers still across northern Scotland,
00:56
some wet and at times windy weather here.
00:58
Not as windy as yesterday, of course.
01:00
Storm Dudley has now cleared away.
01:01
But blustery, but bright for eastern Scotland,
01:04
northeast England.
01:04
Some good spells of sunshine across the south.
01:07
A few showers drifting into northwest England
01:09
and northern Ireland.
01:11
Temperature-wise, about average for the time of year
01:13
across the north, feeling colder with the breeze,
01:15
a little bit milder further south.
01:17
And as I said, those winds quite a bit lighter
01:19
than they were yesterday, easing down through the day.
01:23
But then they're going to pick up tonight
01:25
as we start to see storm Eunice arriving.
01:27
The cloud moving in initially through the evening,
01:30
then the wet weather spreads in.
01:31
Some heavy rain for northern Ireland,
01:32
really quickly turning to snow here overnight.
01:35
That could cause some disruption.
01:37
And we'll also see snow over the hills of northern England
01:39
and southern Scotland, perhaps some getting down
01:42
to lower levels.
01:43
But it's the winds that really are
01:44
the cause for concern through the night,
01:46
and more particularly on Friday morning
01:49
as they start to strengthen.
01:50
Bringing mild air, so it's going to be a mild air
01:52
across the south.
01:53
We could see temperatures as low as minus 6
01:55
in some rural parts of northern Scotland with a frost here.
01:59
But as I said, it really is all about the winds
02:02
through the morning as the storm system itself heads its way
02:04
across northern Ireland into southern Scotland.
02:06
It's on the southern flank where that's
02:08
squeezing the ice bars through tomorrow morning, 5, 6, 7
02:12
o'clock in particular, pushing those winds up
02:14
through the Bristol Channel.
02:16
Then we'll see some strong winds developing
02:18
as the storm starts to head out into the North Sea
02:20
across northwest England, and they'll
02:21
push down into the Midlands and southeast England as well.
02:25
So it's going on through most of Friday,
02:27
an amber warning covering most of England and Wales,
02:30
a yellow warning further north for snow.
02:34
But it's really this red weather warning
02:36
that's giving us, as I said, the most cause for concern,
02:38
a rare red warning for the coastal strip of Wales
02:41
and the coast of southwest England,
02:44
the north coast in particular.
02:45
Gusts here, 80, 90, maybe more than that.
02:47
We could easily see in exposed areas,
02:49
gusts up to 100 miles an hour.
02:51
Along with that, a storm surge, dangerous waves,
02:54
coastal flooding is likely.
02:56
Right across this amber warning area,
02:58
though, we could at times see gusts even
03:00
in land of 60 to maybe 70 miles an hour,
03:03
potentially stronger than that as the storm starts
03:05
to clear away later on.
03:07
Then we have the yellow warning further north,
03:08
some strong winds here, but also that snow, an extra hazard.
03:12
Low levels, hard to say, but we could see as much as 5
03:15
centimetres in some places.
03:17
More of a higher level issue over hills
03:20
where that snow will be blowing around,
03:22
so blizzards and some pretty treacherous conditions
03:24
on the higher routes.
03:26
But further south, a real risk to life
03:28
with that red warning in place across parts of the southwest.
03:31
There's the picture for the morning.
03:33
Wet weather across eastern parts,
03:35
snow moving northwards across eastern Scotland,
03:37
so there could be some problems here as well.
03:39
Another band of rain swings through
03:41
as the winds then start to strengthen
03:42
over northwest England, down through the Midlands
03:44
and in towards the southeast later on on Friday,
03:47
sort of late morning into the middle of the afternoon
03:50
before the whole system starts to pull away.
03:53
Still some snow falling across eastern Scotland,
03:55
but the winds just steadily easing that notch,
03:57
so no longer becoming damaging and dangerous
04:01
by the end of Friday.
04:02
But a lot to get through before then, of course.
04:05
Plenty of sunshine actually in the afternoon
04:06
across parts of the south.
04:07
Obviously, it's going to be very gusty indeed,
04:09
and that will have an impact on the temperatures early
04:11
in the day.
04:11
We could get to double figures, but by the afternoon,
04:14
five to eight degrees further south,
04:16
just one or two further north and feeling colder,
04:19
obviously, with the strength of the wind.
04:21
We're not done there either,
04:22
because more wet and windy weather
04:24
will swing in through the weekend.
04:25
Yes, Storm Eunice clears away on Friday evening,
04:28
but plenty of showers packing in with the colder air.
04:30
They'll have some snow mixed in,
04:32
northwest England, Northern Ireland, western Scotland,
04:34
so things could well turn icy on Friday night.
04:37
And then we are looking at further spells
04:39
of wet and windy weather during this weekend,
04:42
so we need to keep an eye on these weather systems
04:44
continuing to come in.
04:46
A strong jet stream at the moment
04:47
powering further low pressure systems,
04:49
bringing strong winds, spells of rain,
04:51
and yes, a bit more snow in places as well.
04:54
