Hello, the relative calm before the storm.
00:04
The weather is going to be getting livelier
00:06
over the next 24 hours.
00:07
Storm Eowyn will arrive Thursday night and into Friday.
00:11
Quite a bit of cloud covering the southeast of the UK today.
00:14
Then there's a clearer zone.
00:15
This band of cloud will provide a spell
00:18
of wet and windy weather during Thursday.
00:20
And then behind me, well, the cloud
00:22
is brewing up a little bit.
00:24
But if we look at what storm Eowyn is at the moment,
00:27
it's this weak area of low pressure.
00:30
But it isn't going to stay like that.
00:31
It's gradually going to intensify
00:33
as we go through the next 24 hours
00:35
and then really intensifies as it
00:38
heads towards the Republic of Ireland during Thursday night
00:42
and into Friday.
00:43
It then crosses close to Northern Ireland
00:45
and into Scotland.
00:46
The strongest winds where the isobars are closest together
00:49
in this zone, in its southern flank.
00:52
That's where we're going to see damaging gusts of wind.
00:54
But it is going to be a very windy day everywhere.
00:57
Could be disruption right across the UK.
00:59
More on that in a moment.
01:01
First of all, though, let's get through this afternoon.
01:03
Weak weather front still providing some rain and drizzle
01:05
over parts of East Anglia and the southeast.
01:07
Quite a gray, gloomy, murky, cold day here.
01:10
Apart from that, though, many places dry.
01:12
A few showers for North Wales, West Coast of Wales,
01:15
West Coast of Scotland.
01:17
But elsewhere, tending to brighten up a little bit.
01:19
Some places seeing a little bit of sunshine.
01:22
And the winds are, at the moment, pretty light.
01:25
Temperatures still struggling.
01:26
A touch below average in most of the locations,
01:28
particularly across East Anglia and parts of the southeast
01:30
where it's dank and murky.
01:32
Struggling to get much above three or four Celsius.
01:34
A bit of brightness elsewhere.
01:36
Maybe six or seven degrees Celsius.
01:39
As we go through this evening,
01:40
that's dank and drizzly weather should tend to pull away
01:43
from the southeast.
01:44
A few showers keeping going in the west here and there
01:46
around coast.
01:47
But most places having a dry night with decent clear spells.
01:51
And where the skies are clearest,
01:53
northeast England, northeast Scotland,
01:55
we will see a frost.
01:56
And many towns and cities actually not far away
01:58
from freezing to start Thursday morning.
02:01
Fairly chilly old starts,
02:03
but actually temperatures starting to rise further west
02:06
because that line of cloud I pointed out
02:08
on the satellite picture earlier,
02:09
that's this band of rain.
02:11
That's moving in through tomorrow.
02:12
Now this will be pretty lively.
02:14
It's going to bring a spell of rain across Northern Ireland
02:17
fairly sharply in the morning.
02:18
And then the winds picking up around the coast of Wales,
02:21
southwest England, and through the day
02:22
along the south coast of England as well.
02:24
So we've got Met Office yellow warning in place
02:27
for those gusty winds.
02:28
That rain will zip through,
02:30
but it will be quite heavy certainly for a time
02:33
and linger for much of the afternoon
02:35
across Northern England, parts of Scotland.
02:37
Be a bit of snow mixed in as well over the hills,
02:39
particularly over Scotland, but also Northern England.
02:41
Tends to clear through further south.
02:43
So something a bit brighter and drier through the afternoon,
02:45
but still fairly blustery
02:47
given the winds have been pretty light for a while.
02:50
That will be quite noticeable.
02:51
Temperature wise, five, six, seven.
02:53
So just started to creep up for many places,
02:55
nine, 10 across parts of the south and west.
02:57
So it is going to turn a little milder,
02:59
but as we go through Thursday evening,
03:03
as that rain band clears away,
03:05
we will see those temperatures falling away quite sharply.
03:08
And then eyes out to the southwest.
03:11
The cloud will start to thicken up
03:12
through the course of Thursday night.
03:14
This is the first sign of Storm Eoin
03:18
pushing into the far southwest of Ireland
03:20
with some heavy rain during Thursday evening.
03:22
But of course, it's not going to stop there.
03:24
The storm system intensifying through Thursday
03:28
and then tracking across parts of the Republic of Ireland,
03:31
Northern Ireland up towards Scotland.
03:33
As I said, where these isobars are closest together,
03:35
that's where the strongest winds are going to be.
03:37
But it is going to be a very windy day right across the UK.
03:41
The weather fronts providing the rain,
03:43
they tend to scoot out of the way.
03:44
So certainly across the south, much of Friday will be dry.
03:48
The strongest winds likely through the first part of Friday
03:51
across the south and during Thursday night,
03:53
certainly across the Republic of Ireland.
03:55
Let's put the wind gusts on as we go through Thursday night,
03:58
really whipping up along the south coast
04:00
of the Republic of Ireland, then into the west.
04:03
There's darker colours there,
04:05
but then as the storm system moves its way
04:07
up to the western Scotland,
04:09
some really strong gusts for Northern Ireland
04:12
across the Irish Sea as well,
04:14
generally across Northern England.
04:15
So it's in this swathe that we're most concerned
04:18
about the strength of the wind.
04:19
And well, it stays pretty windy through Friday night.
04:23
And as the storm system clears away,
04:24
we'll see some of the strongest winds
04:25
across Northern Scotland actually develop
04:27
during Friday night and into Saturday.
04:30
So there are a number of Met Office warnings in place
04:33
for the next few days.
04:35
Amber warning issued this morning,
04:37
covering central and southern Scotland,
04:39
Northern Ireland, parts of Northern England
04:41
and North Wales.
04:42
Gusts here widely 60 to 70 miles an hour inland.
04:46
We could easily get to 80 miles an hour,
04:48
possibly in exposed areas up to 90 miles an hour.
04:51
Those kinds of winds are gonna cause structural damage,
04:53
bring down power lines, potentially bring down trees.
04:55
So expect power issues,
04:57
maybe even disruption to mobile phone services,
05:00
certainly widespread travel disruption
05:02
with these kinds of gusts of wind.
05:04
But it's not only in the amber warning area
05:07
that we are concerned.
05:08
Broader yellow wind warnings covering
05:10
pretty much all of the UK.
05:12
Those winds may be a little lighter elsewhere,
05:14
but still potentially damaging,
05:15
still likely to cause some disruption.
05:18
There are also other warnings in place for rain.
05:21
As we see Thursday's rain,
05:23
followed by more rain on Friday for Wales,
05:25
parts of Southwest England.
05:27
That does bring the potential for some flooding.
05:29
And as storm Eowyn moves in,
05:31
it will bring some snow over the hills
05:33
of Northern England for a time,
05:35
and then lingering over the hills and mountains
05:37
of Northern Scotland.
05:38
So we've got a snow warning in place here
05:41
and the wind warnings continue
05:43
across parts of Scotland into Saturday.
05:47
So, as I said, plenty going on.
05:49
Likes to be more wet and windy weather
05:50
coming in on Sunday as well.
05:52
Please do keep up to date with the forecast.
