00:00
Good evening. The north wind is blowing, bringing snow and ice, particularly across parts of northern Britain.
00:07
Heavy snow and strong winds bringing blizzards to parts of the Northern Isles through the evening
00:12
and that wintry weather then slips its way down across the mainland of Scotland through the night.
00:17
A further several centimetres of snow is possible.
00:20
Further west, notice most of the showers here will be of rain, but still with temperatures around freezing
00:27
and that could lead to some slippery conditions on roads and pavements.
00:31
So we have a yellow ice warding in place down into parts of north-west England,
00:35
across Northern Ireland and western Scotland and that mixture of snow and ice
00:39
across northern and north-eastern parts of Scotland, again accompanied by those gusty winds
00:44
making for blizzards and drifting of the snow.
00:47
Much of the south just staying dry, crystal clear, but cold.
00:51
Minus 2, minus 3, even in urban areas in the countryside across the south,
00:56
we could get down to minus 5, minus 6, maybe even as low as minus 7.
01:00
So a very frosty start across the south.
01:03
A gusty wind blowing across northern Britain, still bringing in the showers in the morning,
01:08
so still the potential for icy conditions on Friday morning across the north and the west
01:13
and further snow showers coming in during the day across the north-east of Scotland.
01:18
As we go through the day across the south, not a great deal of change.
01:21
Gradually the frost should melt and we'll see plenty of sunshine across the Midlands,
01:25
south Wales, southern England.
01:27
A few showers getting into north Wales, north-west England, again chiefly of rain,
01:31
but a little bit of hail and sleet is possible and some snow over the hills
01:35
as they'll be in western parts of Scotland.
01:38
Temperatures here a little bit higher than to the east.
01:41
We should get up to 4 or 5 on the west coast, whereas across the north-east
01:45
we should get much above freezing, certainly in Shetland staying below freezing.
01:48
In the south, again 3, 4, 5 degrees Celsius, so below average,
01:52
but the winds lighter here, quite a keen and chilly wind blowing once more
01:56
along those North Sea coasts.
01:58
During Friday evening, pretty quickly those temperatures will be back down below freezing.
02:02
Still a few more showers coming in over northern England, perhaps into the Midlands.
02:06
Certainly they'll keep going in western Scotland, so again as temperatures drop
02:10
that could lead to some icy conditions as we head into Saturday morning.
02:14
But for a good chunk of the country, Saturday will again be dry and fine.
02:18
Yes, we'll start at or below freezing in most locations,
02:22
but quite a bit of hazy sunshine and offer across the south.
02:26
Further north, still a few scattered showers, but not as many I suspect on Saturday as Friday,
02:31
and certainly much of eastern Scotland, north-east England staying dry and fine.
02:35
But down to the south-west, things are changing.
02:38
The wind's picking up, coming up from the south, so we'll see a spell of wet weather.
02:43
Initially of rain, but it could turn to snow as we go through the course of the day.
02:48
Again, a pretty chilly day. Later on we could get up to 789 in the south-west,
02:52
but for much of the day, most places only 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.
02:56
But with lighter winds across Scotland, Saturday will feel milder.
02:59
However, this wet weather in the south, as it hits the colder air,
03:03
will produce some snowfall, something we need to keep a close eye on.
03:07
There are yellow Met Office warnings in place for the weekend.
03:11
This low-pressure system is responsible, bringing in the moisture,
03:15
and also eventually bringing in the milder air.
03:18
But as this milder air, with that moisture, hits the colder air, that's already in place,
03:24
we will see some rain initially, but then turning more to snow,
03:28
particularly over the Midlands, Wales, northern England, and then into parts of Scotland.
03:33
Freezing rain is also likely to be a problem, particularly across parts of Wales and the West Midlands.
03:40
That could make things very, very slippery indeed.
03:43
In the south, there will be gusty winds also, and as the winds pick up,
03:46
as the isobars squeeze together, that could cause some drifting of the snow
03:50
coming into parts of eastern Scotland.
03:52
So lots to consider into this weekend, Saturday night into Sunday in particular,
03:57
as this low pressure moves in.
03:59
Snow, freezing rain, and ice across parts of England, Wales, and snow and strong winds
04:04
moving into parts of Scotland.
04:06
The Met Office warnings are in place.
