00:00Hello and welcome to Wednesday morning's forecast for Scotland from the Met Office.

00:04Cold and frosty first thing for the vast majority but the compensation for the

00:10chill in the air, bright blue skies. Temperatures as low as minus five

00:14degrees in some sheltered highland glens, minus one more generally but it's

00:21going to gradually warm up and we'll keep a lot of sunshine. A few freezing

00:26fog patches first thing, they do lift. Largely dry and bright in the northern

00:30half of the country by the end of the afternoon. A few showers for Shetland and

00:33Orkney, perhaps some sleety stuff and some hail mixed in with the showers but

00:38it's towards the southwest where we get the next bout of wet weather. Rain

00:43pushing into Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire by the end of the afternoon.

00:47Thickening cloud for Edinburgh, Borders, Lothians. A few showers into Fife and one

00:52or two showers also affecting the far north and northeast. Otherwise it's here

00:57where we'll have the clearest spells in between the showers as the sun goes down.

01:01Temperatures again falling away. These blue shades here indicate a frost

01:05forming once again as we end the day. However, because we've got the cloud

01:11moving in and these outbreaks of rain pushing in, they'll turn to snow over the

01:15higher ground. It is going to be a generally frost free night, a less chilly

01:20night on Thursday morning compared to recent nights but it's nevertheless

01:26still fairly chilly out there. Temperatures into the low single figures

01:31perhaps just below freezing over the higher ground and then into Thursday

01:36itself. We've got low pressure sitting fairly comfortably over Northern Ireland.

01:41It's not going to move very far, very fast. These weather fronts are going to

01:44become very slow moving and on the northern flank of that low where

01:48Scotland lies we're going to have a brisk easterly wind pulling in more and

01:53more showers. And so effectively on Thursday the southern area of that low

01:57pressure throws up areas of rain across southern Scotland. Showers roll in from

02:02the North Sea across eastern and northeastern areas in the west. That's

02:06where the driest and brightest weather will be just with one or two showers.

02:09But it's going to continue to feel on the cold side and then clearing skies on

02:13Thursday night into Friday means it will be a widespread frost on Friday morning

02:17and another cold day follows. But Friday looks a lot drier and brighter compared

02:23to Thursday. Best day of the week, sunny spells, crisp sunshine, seven or eight
