00:06The United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 is frequently mentioned.

00:13Southern Lebanon, who was supposed to be secure by 1701, the resolution, it was supposed to

00:22This attack was a direct result of the failure of UNIFIL and the Lebanese government to implement

00:31But what exactly is Resolution 1701?

00:35It was unanimously adopted on August 11, 2006, to put an end to the war between Israel and

00:40Lebanon.

00:41It contains a few key points.

00:44A full cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, their replacement by soldiers

00:50of UNIFIL or the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, the deployment of no other armed

00:55forces besides Lebanese and UNIFIL soldiers in southern Lebanon, and the respective buffer

01:01zones between the Litani River and northern Israel.

01:05But in reality, the resolution was not fully implemented or respected.

01:09Hezbollah has increased its capacities in southern Lebanon.

01:12Its special ops unit, the Radawan forces, deployed along and south of the Blue Line,

01:17where the demarcation area monitored by UNIFIL.

01:21As for Israel, it withdrew its troops from Lebanon after the signing.

01:25But the Israeli military has violated Lebanese airspace thousands of times, as it did on

01:31September 19, during the speech by the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah.

01:36Both today and for years, the EU has been calling for the resolution to be truly implemented.
