00:00Tena koutou and welcome to Guy Montgomery's Guymon Spelling 3, T-H-R-E-E, as in episode
00:27three of my Spelling Bee.
00:29Tonight's episode is worth so much more than a bronze medal though.
00:32It's going to be full of solid gold hits as I pluck four comedians from relative obscurity
00:37and thrust them into the limelight in the form of a televised spelling spectacle.
00:42And at its conclusion, one contestant will win spelling gold, which is this, a big old
00:47ticket to more screen time and more money, while another speller's day will go much worse.
00:57Not just missing out on a podium finish, but being forcibly relocated to that part of the
01:01set over there to wear a dunce's hat on a stool with no back support.
01:10Two prizes for two spellers.
01:13What about people who finish second and third?
01:15Well, they will be forgotten for all time.
01:18The four people competing for success in anonymity tonight are Rosemary DeFeo, Paul MacIsaac,
01:27Nicky Umber, and Robbie Nicholls.
01:34And before our first round, I'd like to say good luck to everyone involved.
01:39Now let's get spelling!
01:45This is a straightforward round, giving us all an opportunity to get to know one another
01:49and our contestants to get to know how it feels to spell on TV.
01:52Three receptacles, three levels of difficulty for the kupu within.
01:56In the Coward's Cup are easy words to spell, worth a pitiful point.
02:01In the person's purse are medium words, or mid-words for those Gen Zs in the crowd, and
02:06those will get you two points.
02:08And finally, the Bucket of Bravery contains words with vowels and consonants in such an
02:12unpredictable order that I will go so far as to say they are hard to spell.
02:17Spell a Bucket of Bravery word correctly, you'll get three points.
02:20Our first speller needs no introduction, but that would be rude, so I'll give her one anyway.
02:24It's Rose Butterfield!
02:26Hello.
02:27Hello, Rose.
02:28Hello.
02:29We went to Melbourne and Edinburgh together in 2014 with the Split Bill Show, and I've
02:37hardly seen you since.
02:39Tell me, are you still doing comedy?
02:43I am.
02:44I'm doing comedy.
02:45But it's the second series.
02:46You didn't ask me to do the first series of this.
02:48I will say that.
02:49Yeah.
02:50We were trying to go for the sort of higher status acts for the first series.
02:54So that we'd get a second series, and then we could bring in the new people.
02:56Yeah, I feel like I was an original part of this whole thing.
02:59You were.
03:00Yes.
03:01This started as an online show.
03:02Quite an unhinged online Zoom show during lockdown.
03:05Yeah.
03:06And I will say, how I represented myself, I'm not proud.
03:11And so I'm here today to redeem myself, but I'm scared of who you've put me on with tonight.
03:16You're scared of these three?
03:18Oh.
03:19Not physically.
03:20Yeah.
03:21Not even, what?
03:22Not even me?
03:23I could kick sand in your face.
03:24Don't you think I could take you in a fight?
03:25I think I could take you in a fight.
03:26I think I could take you in a fight.
03:27I'm a big, strong boy.
03:28Is that the third round?
03:29But I'm taller than you.
03:30Yeah, but I go to the gym now.
03:31Is this how people start fights?
03:32Just being like...
03:33Before anyone can spell, we have to figure out the pecking order.
03:34I'm not...
03:35It's very nice to be back here.
03:36I'm excited to spell.
03:37Good to see you again, man.
03:38Yeah, it's good to see you, too.
03:39We can catch up later.
03:40Okay.
03:41See you later.
03:42Bye.
03:43Bye.
03:44Bye.
03:45Bye.
03:46Bye.
03:47Bye.
03:48Bye.
03:49Bye.
03:50Bye.
03:52Rose, there are three receptacles here.
03:55From which would you like to spell?
03:57I don't know.
03:58So, a big part of the show is you're going to have to choose.
04:00Bucket of br...
04:01Mm!
04:02Or you don't want to go early with bucket of bravery, eh?
04:06Teaming, though.
04:07What sort of words are in that bucket?
04:09Yeah...
04:10Listen.
04:11Bucket of bravery?
04:12Yeah.
04:13All right.
04:14Your word...
04:15Yeah.
04:16From the bucket of bravery is...
04:18Connoisseur.
04:19Oh!
04:20Oh
04:21Now to help you on your way
04:22You can ask for a language of origin a definition and to hear the word in a sentence
04:27Uh, I would love to hear the word in a sentence guy as a connoisseur of fine wine and literature
04:33There's nothing I enjoy more than a glass of Fanta while digging into the latest FHM magazine
04:40Okay, great you want me to spell it now? Yeah, you just you just follow your instincts, right?
04:46C o
04:49N n o
04:53I
04:57S e you are that is incorrect
05:03Connoisseur is spelled C o n n o i s at this point. I thought way to go Rose. Oh, and then there's another s e you are
05:13Next up is a contestant with big strong muscles presumably from moving around the pages of a dictionary
05:24Eli last year you received an award from the University of Canterbury acknowledging you as a successful alumni
05:30I've had a word with the vice-chancellor and she's agreed that if you don't win tonight, she's going to take the award back
05:37Yeah
05:38And you are I mean, I think you're you're quite a good speller from memory
05:42I mean, I like to think so, but I use autocorrect a lot
05:44I've been thinking a lot about a spelling error
05:47I made when I was 11 that I had to live with a lot because it was in my
05:51Password for my email. Mm-hmm. My password for my email for years was the all-too-sexy Eli
05:59So gross and then years later, I realized I'd spelt two with one. Oh
06:05All your past was now just it's felt correctly. Yeah, everyone could log into every one of your
06:19I'm sorry, and I couldn't take you in a fight
06:21I
06:32Like to please you to have you with us from which receptacle. Would you like the spell?
06:36I do know I was looking at that rusty bucket and I was like, I'm definitely gonna go for it
06:39But then watching Rose do what I think no
06:41No, the person's purse for me a sensible strategy the person's person. It's
06:46And
06:49Your word from the person's purse
06:52It's Sphinx
06:54Can use it in a sentence place?
06:56Answering the riddle of the Sphinx was Oedipus's second proudest achievement right behind having sex with his mum
07:07S P H I N X. That is correct
07:16Two points for you. Our next spell is last name rhymes with numbers. Unfortunately numbers have no use or utility on this show
07:23You've seen her on seven days. It's Becky
07:30Becky is it true? You are called Becky because you're simply too lazy to remember how to spell Ruby
07:38Yes
07:39It's a pleasure to have you with us you recently actually moved to the United Kingdom I did and it's going so well
07:45I'm back already
07:47I'm familiar with the practice
07:51England that's that's where a lot of these words come from. You're you must be feeling confident
07:54Oh, but I plan on I've got a cunning plan. I plan on cheating
08:00So I think I'll be all right because I have written the alphabet on my hand
08:06As I forget any of the letters I think I'll be fine
08:12Yeah, you can't go wrong with that
08:15Well, Becky, it's a pleasure to have you with us which receptacle would you like to spell from? Okay
08:20Maybe I should go for the buckle of bravery. Would you would you would like to know?
08:25I
08:31Think I'd like to go for the person's purse, please the person's purse. It shall be and your word from the person's purse is
08:39chivalry
08:43Kind of a definition, please something that isn't dead m'lady
08:46I
08:53Before max of chivalry every day like opening the dishwasher for my wife when it's time for her to
09:06See h I b a l r y
09:16And our fourth speller is our returning champ, you may remember him from episode two, it's Robbie
09:25Robbie
09:27Welcome back. If you keep this up, I'm gonna have to start charging rent for the two square meters. You're taking up in our studio
09:35I also only won the first episode because Justine buzzed in and spelled the word wrong. So
09:41Really relying on these people to help me through this episode
09:45So the strategy is spell nothing just what you're you know, your competitors capitulate. That's the goal
10:02There's a toxic energy on the show
10:04Well
10:07Robbie it's a bold strategy and it's gonna be put to the test immediately as I ask you to please choose a
10:13Receptacle and then spell a word so far. The winning strategy has been person's purse. That is correct
10:19But I'm here for the second time. So let's go bucket of bravery
10:27Probably the wrong call from the bucket of bravery your word is
10:33Papa to Anuku
10:36Okay
10:37Language of origin, please. We're standing on it Robbie
10:42And you're gonna charge rent for it
10:54So, what's the definition guy the earth mother the source of all things people tree birds gave birth to all life as we know it
11:01The least we could do is call her on her birthday
11:08Okay, he a
11:10P a T
11:13You with a macron a with a macron in you
11:19KU that is correct
11:21And
11:28With our first round settled Robbie's out in front, but it's still early days. Well, it's nighttime right now
11:34But in the world of the show, it's early days. We're almost to a break. But just like a trip to the supermarket
11:39It's irresponsible to go in hungry. So first we're going to spell the soup
11:43Soup
11:47Soup is it a food or is it a drink a question for another show?
11:51Because tonight it is playing the role of a spelling challenge and to help us with this minigame
11:56Please welcome our resident chef chef Sanjay Patel
12:04Please Sanjay was my father's name. Call me chef
12:08Okay, chef
12:10What have you prepared for us this evening, it's one of my world famous mystery soups Oh
12:16mystery soup from chef Sanjay
12:18So this is a very simple round and in it contestants are gonna have to taste behind. Oh, thank you
12:29Contestants are gonna have to hide again. I forgot my ladle. Thank you chef in this round
12:34Contestants must taste identify and then correctly spell the soup you have one lines. Thank you chef
12:41You have one and break to solve this liquid riddle spellers. You gotta get slurping everyone else
13:05Welcome back to guy Montgomery's time on spelling bee this week's episode is brought to you by notepads without lines
13:12You know notepads without lines right big right small hell draw a little picture. It's your choice
13:19Thanks to notepads without lines
13:23Before the break our spellers were calling me guy Mon consummate because it's mealtime
13:27They had to taste and spell a famous soup prepared by chef Sanjay and let's see how they do
13:33Rose we still eat everyone still tucking
13:38Okay, cool, so I think that the bad soup
13:43That's your guess. That's my guess. Very good. Yeah, just talk about how you identified it
13:47I just kind of went with the cold like what's an iconic cold soup and the gazpacho is that cold soup?
13:53Thank you very much for having me
13:55Really good show-and-tell. Thank you Rose down the line now to Eli
13:58So before Sanjay even walked the super I turned to Rose and I said it's gonna go eat gazpacho because that'll be hard to spell
14:16But then it came over and I think there's more bits in this so I have written rotatouille or salsa
14:23You've done quite a lot there you've got two different things and a drawing
14:28Becky what have you done? Well before Sanjay even came over. I actually turned to Robbie
14:34And I said I bet me and Eli are gonna be friends after this
14:41But I did say that the only cold soup I know is gazpacho so here it is
14:50Wow, you've got three spellings
14:52That was just a draft
14:55What's the second one?
15:01Okay, thank you very much Becky and Robbie down the end there
15:05Um, I had similar feelings that it was the only cold soup
15:09I knew I don't have a lot of confidence in myself in general
15:12So I just kind of caveated it in case I was wrong with that. This does not look right
15:17Sorry guy, it's the question mark part of your spelling. No
15:21Then why is it on the pad?
15:35Rose you've come in here with more toxic energy
15:40Then on all of your appearances on the online spelling bee combined
15:45Okay, so everyone could you please hold up your pad so I can see them
15:49Eli and Becky you are both incorrect Eli and that it is not ratatouille and Becky and that that is absolutely not a
15:58wrong three times
16:00But Rose and Robbie congratulations a point each
16:05Wow
16:06Those are some sharp taste buds and English skills
16:09Well done Rose and Robbie on the point commiserations to the morons who now have to overcome their spelling deficiencies with a full tummy
16:16And in this next round, you'll be keeping company with the leaders of tomorrow
16:25It's not plagiarism if you're stealing from yourself based on the roaring success of hard words for a 13 year old
16:31We are excited this year to be playing hard words for a 14 year old with the very same teenager
16:40Jordan and Chris
16:44Different comedians same kids different prize
16:47Last year each pair was spelling to win a spelling bee point for our contestants and a desirable prize for our teens
16:54This year we have consolidated those smaller prizes into one big juicy prize
17:00Contestants will still be spelling for a point, but the best performing pair will also win for their 14 year old
17:07$1,000 cash in unmarked $5 bills
17:15That's that feels wrong
17:18Really wrong. Do you have bank accounts? Ah, yes
17:23My responsible King go Vinnie, okay
17:26How's your feeling there?
17:29insane, I
17:30Couldn't tell there was a teenager
17:33I
17:35Knew that was coming a reminder how the round works
17:38Each of you will be given a hard word for a 14 year old to spell but only one of you can spell it
17:44You'll decide between yourselves who will be spelling the word for cash and glory if more than one pairing makes it through this round
17:51We will go again with the non spelling player having to take up spelling responsibilities
17:56So choose your spellers carefully. Does everyone understand what's happening?
18:03It's a real somber energy with the pills I just don't think you should give that much money to a 14 year old
18:15I don't come over to England and tell you how to write Star Trek, bro. I
18:20Just don't think they should be together
18:25It's all wrong, but anyway, go on have fun, okay. I was gonna go on irrespective of you
18:32You got no money all right over there Sanjay. Yeah a lot of money here, and I think 14's the age
18:37You start taking illicit drug services
18:42Okay
18:45Robbie have you a moment to get acquainted? Yes
18:49Last time he won a drone. I was told yeah the stakes feel higher this time
18:54So I'm very nervous and don't you have anxiety yes
18:59I can't be helping
19:05Okay to help you in this round you can ask for a language of origin a
19:08Definition and hear a sentence that I have written as a 14 year old version of myself
19:14Well Robbie and Chris are you guys ready to play? Yes your word is broccoli
19:19How do you feel about the word broccoli Chris um I?
19:23Think I can spell it. Okay great. Thanks. Oh, it's a lot of pressure
19:28A lot of pressure to put on a 14 it is isn't it and by you bucking the responsibility I feel like that's
19:36I'd love to hear that 14 year old sentence, please. Oh yuck broccoli for dinner. Why are you trying to kill me mom?
19:45Didn't like broccoli
19:47Okay, if you're confident you want to go for it Chris. Yeah, so then you can get the hard one if we
19:57Oh
20:04See see I LI
20:08That is incorrect. I'm so sorry because I'm actually so sorry
20:13I didn't realize what it would feel like to host this segment
20:16Really really well broccoli is spelt B. R. O. C. C. O. L. I
20:22Nothing to be ashamed of you did a fantastic job. Let's hear it one more time
20:28And
20:30We move down the line now to Becky and Jordan Becky
20:34Surely you wouldn't mess this up for Jordan would you well Jordan didn't tell me that last time
20:39She also didn't win anything so she's been let down before
20:46So you think it's okay to do it again
20:50Jordan how you feeling being paired with Becky wonderful actually you've got a really good attitude
20:55Oh, you've been studying drama
21:00Are you guys ready to hear your word your word is vacuum
21:14Okay should we ask for what do you want to ask for a sentence a sentence, please I know mom
21:19I'll do my chores after I finish my game
21:25Ever since dad left there's been a real vacuum of positivity in this
21:32Your parents are together yeah, and it's a bit borderline that one
21:43They can join in this is how do you feel would you like to spell it or would you like me?
21:48I reckon you could spell it okay
21:50I
21:54Okay
21:56See see you you in that is incorrect
22:04V AC you
22:07All right, we move on to Eli and pearl you've had some time for the nerves to settle have they managed to do that
22:12Oh, yeah, and I can't wait to get pearl
22:17However, many Edmund Hillary's are in there
22:19Are you a fan? Yeah of money or Edmund Hillary
22:28Are you a fan of Eli's
22:31Yeah
22:33Way way way there's a moment of hesitation there. Do you know who I am in any capacity?
22:43That's cool, I I actually didn't know who you were
22:49And I'm a fan
22:55All right, you guys ready to hear your word, oh, yeah your word is Caribbean
23:03How are you feeling about Caribbean take all the time you need
23:07This is your thousand dollars. I think I got it
23:11Pell's got it. All right pill. You're a language of origin or a sentence or a definition or a definition
23:16A relaxing place to visit and a stressful word to spell
23:22See a
23:24RRI be a in
23:29That is incorrect
23:32Caribbean is felt see a I be be a in
23:37Everybody let's hear it for pill
23:40Well
23:43Rose you could cut through the tension in this room by just giving Vinny one of the several thousand dollars of cash you carry on
23:49your person at all
23:53Vinny last year you said your favorite subject at school was lunch. Yeah has anything changed? No
24:02You guys want to hear your word yes, please your word is graffiti
24:10I
24:12You got this I don't got it
24:14You go for it. Oh
24:17Give me
24:18What you would use it in a 14 year old sentence. I know it just says mr. Johnson does stinky shit, sir
24:24But it's not tagging. It's graffiti
24:27It's my ass
24:31You've been tripping a lot of people up with the double the double consonants on all of these words
24:37But I think I know this
24:41G
24:42R a
24:45if if
24:47ITI
24:49that is
25:08You are complicit
25:16Don't say something bad, please
25:31Congratulations to both of you now this might sound arrogant to say but that is how you make TV
25:37Congratulations to Rose and Vinny if you can just save up another
25:40199,000 of those you might be able to put a deposit on a one-bedroom apartment in a rural town one day. I
25:48Think we've all earned a break after that. We'll see you shortly while Vinny orders a limousine and take these other teens
26:06I
26:12Welcome back to the show all of us here at spelling bee industries
26:15Hope that you enjoyed the break and audiences and contestants alike
26:18We hope you've recovered because I have a proposal to make to you all a decent proposal
26:27My decent proposal is this in this round
26:30You'll be split into two pairings of two and for each pairing of two
26:34There are a total of four points up for grabs in front of you
26:38You each have one easy word to spell and one hard word to spell in this round
26:43You are responsible for proposing which word your partner has to spell if you both spell your words correctly
26:50You will each get two points if one of you spells your word correctly while the other falters the correct speller will get the four
26:56points all for themselves
26:59If neither of you spell your word correctly no points will be awarded Rose and Eli you are our first team
27:06I'd like you to take a look at your words without letting each other see them
27:09So that you know, which is which and you didn't have 30 seconds to discuss your strategy with one another
27:15Okay, what so we've got along so well so far. Yeah, we started a fight before the first round
27:22We both give each other the easy one and yes all good. Oh, but you're a bastard
27:27Yeah, I just remembered you are an absolute because I played board games with you and you are it you were a cheat and a
27:32liar I am
27:41Give you the easy word you're gonna give me the easy word. We're both gonna win. Oh my god
27:45No, you're not gonna give me the easy word
27:48I'm gonna need you guys to make a decision. Okay? Well, I'm a good person. I'll give you the easy word genuinely
27:53No, hey, hey easy word easy word
27:55Mm-hmm Sanjay's approaching choose your box and hand it over to Sun far out
28:01Dude, just give me the easy way. Wait, what one are you giving? Are you giving me? I'm giving you the easy
28:06Eli give me the easy word. I will give you the easy word. This is excellent television
28:14Okay, I'm gonna count you down
28:16You don't even know
28:30He's lying man, he's I cannot believe Eli the word you have to spell
28:42Piano of course
28:44p i a n o
28:46That is correct
28:50Rose mm-hmm the word you're actually you're such a piece of shit
29:04The word that rose you have to spell what is sphegmomanometer I
29:13Thought you would enjoy the challenge
29:16I
29:17Have it in a word. You can't have it a sense, but I can tell you what it is, please
29:21It's a device to measure blood pressure. And if we had one right now yours would be off the chart
29:28Okay, s p h e g m
29:36A m o
29:40In
29:41ITOR
29:44That is incorrect
29:46Wow
29:49Sphegmomanometer is spelled s p h y g m o m a n o
29:56M e t e r. I thought you did so
30:02Don't even look at me don't talk to me don't talk to my friends
30:05Don't ever come to me ever again for anything in your life. You are dirt. You're scum and
30:13I can't look at you anymore
30:16You like anything to say thank you for the points
30:28Thank You Robbie, you know how it works
30:34Take a look at your proposed words and make a plan together
30:37I
30:41Think
30:44Yeah, I'm less established in the comedy industry and I still want people to think I'm really nice
30:51Me too, I think I do think you're nice. I trust that you will give me the nice one
30:56I'll give you the nice one and great if you don't I'll be shocked and appalled likewise. I will talk to your parents
31:02I
31:05Also to be honest think you'd probably be able to spell the hard one

31:37There's not a lot on the line in terms of friendship here Robbie nickel, yeah, what's the word guy avoid?
31:50It's just really easy to be nice, you know, yeah
31:53Avoid a V o ID that is correct
32:06Holy moly, we've had a thousand dollars cash and betrayal all in a night's work
32:12You thought the show couldn't get any better. You might be right or you might be wrong
32:15But you need to stick around after this
32:23You
32:35Well, we've covered a lot of ground on tonight's episode from teenagers to betrayal
32:40I think this is a fine opportunity to check in on our emotion
32:44Emotions
32:48Emotions are taking the spelling be over caught up in sorrow
32:52Lost in the song
32:55You'll each be asked to spell an emotion while simultaneously
32:59Performing that emotion up to two points can be awarded per word one for the correct spelling and one for the performance
33:07And I asked the drama nerds among us not to get complacent as those performance points will not be awarded lightly
33:13For each word you can ask Sanjay to show you the emotion or to help you search within yourself to get in character
33:20I can give you a situation in which I think you would feel the given emotion
33:26Now, let's get a motive
33:28starting with Robbie your emotion is
33:33Disappointment. Okay. I would like to see Sanjay perform the emotion
33:43I'm doing it
33:47Sanjay and in what situation might I feel that emotion guy if you raised a child and they turned out to be just like you
33:59Okay

34:43I'm doing it
34:49And guy, could you please tell me when I
34:53Specifically might feel contempt. Well, not that you're visibly showing it right now
34:57But I would say being made to do something vulnerable on television by guy Montgomery
35:02Yeah, okay, I'm gonna focus it specifically at Eli just
35:07Just for the guy, you know, we just said we're all here

38:36I think the air cons busted which I'm okay with because it's time perfectly with the metaphorical heating up of the show stakes
38:43Which must mean it's time for the buzz round
38:45Oh
38:50Buzzing caused and bees by the rapid movement of their wings the buzzers on this show will come with a similarly rapid reading out of
