Hi friends! Today we are going to learn about more noun cases. So let's start!
00:10
We know that noun is a naming word, and all the naming words, that is, names of persons,
00:20
animals, birds, places, things, even feelings or ideas are called nouns.
00:29
Cases of nouns, pronouns, and we also learned that every noun has some relation with some other word in the sentence.
00:41
The relationship between the noun and some other word in the sentence is called case.
00:49
We have already learned about two cases of nouns and pronouns, nominative case and accusative case.
00:59
Now the cases we are going to learn about are the vocative case, the possessive case, and the dative case.
01:11
We are going to begin with the possessive case or genitive case of noun and pronoun.
01:20
A noun or pronoun is said to be in possessive case or genitive case when it shows ownership, authority, origin, kind, etc.
01:35
Let's learn this with the help of examples.
01:39
That book is mine.
01:41
The pronoun mine shows the ownership of the book.
01:46
So the pronoun mine is in the possessive case, also called genitive case.
01:56
That is Rika's car.
01:58
The word Rika's shows the ownership of the car.
02:03
So here, the word Rika's is a possessive or the genitive case as it is showing possession.
02:13
Now let's learn how to make possessive cases of different nouns.
02:18
If we have a singular noun, we can apostrophe s after it to make it a possessive noun.
02:27
For example, girl, girls.
02:31
Boy, boys.
02:34
Child, childs.
02:37
Here are some sentences.
02:40
This girl's dress is very elegant.
02:45
This boy's perfume is very nice.
02:50
And if the noun is plural, for example, girls, we can make a possessive noun by adding an apostrophe in the end.
03:00
Let's have a look at example sentences.
03:04
Those girls' dresses are very nice.
03:09
This means that the dresses of those girls are very nice.
03:15
Here, girls with an apostrophe in the end is a possessive case of a plural noun.
03:24
Let's have more cases of possessive cases of plural nouns.
03:29
This is boy's perfume.
03:33
This means that this perfume is for boys.
03:37
Here, boys is a possessive case of a plural noun.
03:44
This child's handwriting is very beautiful.
03:48
Here, the word childs is a possessive case of a singular noun.
03:56
All these books are mine.
03:59
Here, the pronoun mine shows a possession of something.
04:05
So, mine is a possessive pronoun.
04:10
Your hair is very long.
04:13
Here, the pronoun your shows possession.
04:18
So, it's a possessive pronoun.
04:22
Whose books are these?
04:25
Whose spectacles are these?
04:28
Here we have more examples.
04:30
Vocative case of noun pronoun.
04:35
Noun is said to be in vocative case when it's the name of the person being addressed in the sentence.
04:43
Let's learn with examples.
04:46
Lisa, come here and have your breakfast.
04:50
Here, Lisa is noun in the vocative case as Lisa is being addressed or talked to.
05:00
Hey Sam, let's play football.
05:03
Here, Sam is in the vocative case as Sam is being addressed or talked to.
05:12
Olivia, please concentrate on your work.
05:15
Here, Olivia is a noun in the vocative case as Olivia is being addressed or talked to.
05:25
Joy, you have been playing since five hours.
05:29
Now, come inside.
05:31
Here, Joy is in the vocative case of noun.
05:36
John, will you come to play with me?
05:40
Here too, John is in the vocative case.
05:45
Oh John, you have done it in the wrong manner.
05:49
In this sentence, the word John is in the vocative case as it's the name of the person we are talking to.
05:58
So, the exact naming verbs are the nouns that are in the vocative case.
06:06
Now, we have to learn the last case of the noun and it is the dative case.
06:13
When a noun is used as an indirect object of the verb, it's said to be in a dative case.
06:20
We will learn with examples.
06:23
My father gave Tia a book.
06:27
Father is the subject.
06:29
Gave is the verb and he gave what?
06:35
He gave a book.
06:37
So, book is a direct object.
06:41
And gave the book to whom?
06:43
Gave the book to Tia.
06:46
So, Tia is indirect object of the verb.
06:51
So, Tia is said to be in the dative case.
06:56
Here we have more examples.
06:59
My mother made me a pizza.
07:02
Mother is the subject.
07:04
Made is the verb.
07:07
And she made what?
07:09
Pizza.
07:10
So, pizza is the direct object.
07:14
But mother made pizza for whom?
07:17
For me.
07:19
So, indirect object of the verb is me.
07:23
So, me is said to be in the dative case.
07:29
The teacher gave children a surprise test.
07:32
Teacher is the subject.
07:35
Gave is the verb.
07:37
And gave what?
07:39
Gave a test.
07:41
So, test is the direct object.
07:45
And gave test to whom?
07:47
To the children.
07:50
So, children is the indirect object of verb.
07:54
So, it will be said to be in the dative case.
07:57
