00:00 Nearly 11 years ago, the dramatic murder of model and law school graduate Reeve Steenkamp
00:05 captured headlines, astonishing the world as an Olympic hero fell from grace.
00:11 South African double amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius was a Paralympic champion who successfully
00:17 lobbied to enter non-disabled competitions.
00:19 Then, on Valentine's Day 2013, he shot Steenkamp multiple times through a toilet door at his
00:26 home.
00:27 He told authorities that he mistook her for a burglar.
00:31 Pistorius was initially convicted of culpable homicide and jailed for five years.
00:36 The Supreme Court of Appeal would later call this a shockingly lenient sentence.
00:41 The court would increase his conviction to murder and more than double his sentence to
00:45 13 and a half years.
00:48 In South Africa, even people serving life sentences may apply for parole.
00:52 The penal system focuses on the rehabilitation of offenders and their reintegration into
00:58 society.
00:59 "He has ticked all the necessary boxes and we can only wish and hope Oscar Pistorius
01:10 will come out a better human being and he'll be able to help others.
01:14 You know, when we look at just the punitive measures, we tend to forget that there is
01:20 a possibility where somebody can be rehabilitated."
01:26 Pistorius will not be allowed to talk to the media, nor can he leave the Pretoria area
01:30 without permission from authorities.
01:32 He will also be required to attend programs on anger management and violence against women.
01:38 Pistorius' sentence will expire on December 5, 2029.
