Wales headlines 27 April: UK’s largest open-cast mine to close
  • last year
The UK’s largest open-cast coal mine Ffos Y Fran in Merthyr Tydfil must close after 16 years of digging. There have been a number of attempts from owners to extend the excavation timescale at the site, but push back from residents and Welsh Government climate change warnings have meant the site will not be extended.

A fierce debate took place in a Newport City Council meeting as the local authority supported a motion to become a city of sanctuary. Labour Cllr Emma Stowell-Corton said Newport had become a more interesting and accepting place since the city welcomed more migrants, but Conservative members said the move was a petty swipe at the UK government.

Wrexham AFC have revealed all the details for their upcoming open top bus tour across the city. It will take place on Tuesday 2nd May at around 6.15pm. The celebrations will be for the mens and womens side who have both won promotion from their respective leagues, with thousands of fans expected to line the streets.
