Canada: All About Ontario
Ontario is Canada's most populous province, with a population of nearly 13.5 million in 2016. It is located in the east-central part of the country and its capital is Toronto (also Canada's largest city), located in the south of the province. Ottawa, Canada's federal capital, is located on its territory at the junction of the Ottawa River. It is the second richest province in the country after Alberta; if it were independent, it would be the 20th largest economy in the world, ahead of Switzerland. The province was named after Lake Ontario, a word from the Huron language meaning "great lake" or "beautiful sparkling water". Ontario's motto is "Ut incepit fidelis sic permanet"
(Faithful she began, faithful she will remain). Before the arrival of Europeans, the region, without villages, was inhabited by the Algonquian and Iroquoian peoples.
