You might have some preconceptions before visiting this, the largest of the Caribbean islands. But you'll leave feeling mesmerised and truly well-refreshed. Havana retains many quarters with shabby, but colourful buildings and the residents still drive outdated cars. This cosmopolitan hub's also known for rum, cigars, beautiful beaches and a friendly, welcoming and open-minded population which consistently entertain visitors and themselves with their street music and dance rituals. Varadero is arguable the country's most popular beach destination and is situated only 90 miles from Havana. It offers many water sport and expeditions into nearby underwater caves. Trinidad is a major city which houses many beautiful churches and stands as a living testament to the country's colonial history. Like the older regions of Havana, its edifice has barely changed since the 19th century. Santiago de Cuba is the country's second city. It houses a well-preserved fortress as well as beautiful botanical gardens and vantage points up to 4,000 ft high which offer breathtaking views. Valle de Viñales is a huge and exhilarating natural landscape popular with hikers and those interested in the art of tobacco and cigar manufacture.
