Essential Travel Itinerary: Mexico
Mexico has quickly grown in popularity with tourists, who come in their millions annually seeking extensive cultural heritage, beautiful beaches, flamboyant cities and an intense nightlife. Mexico City counts over 20 million inhabitants. It's a huge beehive of activity and movement, yet it's historic centre is relatively compact, where you'll find the classic colonial architecture and museums detailing the country's history. But you'll also have to taste some of Mexico's famous street food and sample the world of masked wrestling. Also in the rugged interior but much further North is the deserted wilderness of Chihuahua and the vast, deep Copper Canyon. Guadalajara is Mexico's second city, as rich in history as the capital with its well preserved gold and silver mines, underground road network, cobblestone allées and sidewalk cafes. 45 miles away is the town of Tequila, whose native plants form the basic ingredient for the celebrated drink. The Yucatan's two major attractions are Chichen Itza, the site of ancient Mayan ruins and the most celebrated pyramid outside Egypt. And near this cultural gem is Cancun, the sleepless party capital and a favorite destination for a little hedonism in the tropics.
