Essential Travel Itinerary: Peru

Peru is rugged, immense and diverse. This is one of South America's most popular travel destinations has an abundance of choice for all desires and tastes. Lima's a good departure point for those just arriving and who fancy going off to explore the wilderness of the Andes. But don't rush off too fast, take a moment to savour some Cuy (roasted guinea pig), admire its colonial town and its beautiful coastline and check out the ancient clay pyramid of Huaca Pucllana. Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail are UNESCO heritage sites but also testament to the achievements of the Inca's and historical gems which tell thousands of tails. The city of Cuzco is also a UNESCO site, a historical capital during Inca times which showcases the ancient ruins of Sacsayhuamán, the chic, artisan neighborhood of San Blas and the Chinchero and Pisac markets. Near the extreme south is Cruz del Condor, one of the world's deepest canyons where an amazing view awaits as well as an opportunity to see majestic birds diving down its slopes.
