THE DEBATE - Iraq violence: ISIS insurgency catches up with Kurdistan

We focus on events in Iraq’s autonomous region of Kurdistan. The Baghdad parliament has handed the role of Iraqi president to the veteran politician Fouad Masoum, who is of course a Kurd. It’s a largely ceremonial post and in line with unofficial power-sharing agreements, the president is always a Kurd, the prime minister a Shiite and the speaker a Sunni.
Meanwhile, for several weeks now, Kurdish peshmerga fighters have been battling militants from ISIS and in several areas they are providing the only effective counterweight to these advancing jihadists. But how long will that last?
