Fire on board North Sea ferry sparks emergency rescue

Several passengers on a North Sea ferry were winched up into a rescue helicopter after fire broke out on board.

Police said the incident occurred late on Saturday night on board the MS King Seaways, a ship operated by Denmark’s DFDS Seaways, after a passenger set fire to a cabin in circumstances that remained unclear.

The boat was bound for Amsterdam, but returned to Newcastle early Sunday morning.

Many of the passengers were planning to celebrate New Year’s Eve in the Netherlands.

British police arrested two men on suspicion of arson.
