German lawmakers vote to curb family reunification programme

The Bundestag on Friday announced it would halt family reunification for those granted subsidiary protection for an initial two years.

00:00Germany's Bundestag voted on Friday to suspend family reunification for those who don't qualify for full refugee status for the next two years.
00:13Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the new bill was necessary because Germany's integration capacity had reached its limits,
00:23especially in education, child care and housing. Germany's federal states are expected to approve the bill in July.
00:32The measure supported by the far-right Alternative for Germany party will affect some 380,000 migrants living in Germany.
00:42The bill was passed with 444 votes in favour, whilst 135 voted against.
00:50Dobrindt had previously ordered tighter border controls against illegal migration and the rejection of asylum seekers.
