00:00Ukraine's parliament overwhelmingly approved a bill on Thursday that
00:06restores the independence of two of the country's key anti-corruption watchdogs.
00:10It reverses a contentious move last week that curbed their power and sparked protests.
00:16President Volodymyr Zelensky, who signed the draft into law,
00:21said it was important that the government listens to public opinion.
00:24Last week's measure to place the watchdogs under the oversight of the prosecutor general
00:30prompted an outcry from Ukrainians, the EU and international rights groups.
00:35It raised fears that the government could meddle in investigations
00:39and potentially shield its supporters from scrutiny.
00:42Zelensky said he had taken note of the protests and decided to present a new bill to parliament,
00:48underscoring that the prosecutor general and his deputies cannot give orders
00:52to anti-graft agencies or interfere in their work.
