00:00When we were kids, we did promise ourselves an adventure.
00:07I don't think I'll actually come to terms with what I've been doing until I'm home.
00:16I'm finding that the longer I'm going on this race, the stronger I feel.
00:21Just a whirlwind of emotion.
00:24This adventure has been the most uncomfortable adventure of my life.
00:29But it has been the most rewarding.
00:35The closer I'm getting to the finale, the more competitive I'm getting.
00:41If we add every single thing we've learned together now,
00:44I do think we have a good shot at winning.
00:47People will underestimate them, and I think that's one of our superpowers.
00:59The most rewarding time is not only among the most difficult and most difficult people.
01:05We don't need to be able to do it.
01:07You're not going to be able to get a chance.
01:09I'm not going anywhere.
01:11You're not going anywhere.
01:13We're not going anywhere.
01:14We're going anywhere.
01:16I actually can't believe that we're here.
01:31And I actually can't believe that we've turned it around.
01:33We're going into leg aids in first place.
01:37We couldn't have asked for a better start.
01:42When you open that book, no name, how badly do you want to see it?
01:45Obviously, I want to win.
01:46It's the only thing I've wanted this whole time is to have that book just empty.
01:53The odds are against us.
01:55But if we look at it in reality now, with the money that we've got, it could still be anybody's race.
02:00Why can't we catch up 90?
02:05Caroline is very competitive and we're second to them.
02:09So we need to be matching their competitiveness, really.
02:13Let's win.
02:13It's really tight.
02:18Now everybody is on the same level.
02:20It is literally crunch time.
02:23We just need to go, go, go.
02:244.44 a.m.
02:43Hello, good morning.
02:45Good morning.
02:45Heading into the eighth and final leg, Caroline and Tom are in pole position.
02:51But as they begin the final battle to the finish line, mere hours separate the top three teams.
03:01You ready?
03:02Last one.
03:04The finish line.
03:06Kaniyakamari.
03:07Oh, very exciting.
03:11Shall we go?
03:11Let's go.
03:12Bye.
03:14This is it.
03:15After racing 13,000 kilometers, just over 1,000 remain.
03:22The distance that stands between the teams and a prize of 20,000 pounds.
03:28The finish line, Kaniyakamari, sits at the southernmost hip of India, where tourists flock for the sunrise and the 41-meter Tirovaluva statue stands guard, a profound symbol of Tamil culture and philosophy.
03:46To get there, they must traverse the southern states, where life by the sea has shaped its traditions, from spicy fish curries to water-bound rituals.
04:00The most obvious route to Kaniyakamari is down the coast.
04:06Following along the coast may be the most direct route, but competition for tickets is fierce.
04:13And whilst travelling inland is a greater distance, heading via southern India's major cities offers regular services and well-connected highways.
04:27I think if we left Panjee and went inland, it does look a little more complicated.
04:33Yeah.
04:33I think we'd have to overcome a mountainous area, and it just seems to look a lot longer on the map.
04:39Whereas I think if we stick coastal route, shorter mileage, surely the distance is shorter that way.
04:45Then go from Kochi to Kaniyakamari.
04:49Yeah.
04:50And then win the race.
04:51I love that plan.
04:54Caroline and Tom's plan, propel themselves along the coast to Kochi in the heart of Kerala.
05:02Hello, good morning.
05:04We'd like to get a taxi to the station.
05:06As soon as possible.
05:11From our very first leg, we have learnt so much.
05:14This is the time for us to leave no stone unturned, do absolutely everything we can to ensure we come in first.
05:21How much to drop us at the train station, please?
05:241,800 rupees.
05:251,600.
05:27Yeah, okay.
05:28Perfect.
05:28Okay, perfect. Thank you.
05:30Winning would mean everything.
05:32For myself, but more for Mum.
05:34It would mean so much for her to win.
05:36We are looking for a train south today.
05:39Yes, please.
05:40Which comes first?
05:41Udupi.
05:42Udupi.
05:438.15.
05:448.15.
05:46It leaves today?
05:478.15.
05:48UDP one?
05:49Yes.
05:49Let's do UDP.
05:51Thank you very much.
05:54Eager to get moving, Caroline and Tom make a snap decision to travel to Udupi, nearly 500 kilometres shy of Kochi.
06:02We're on the move.
06:05I think this is probably our best chance.
06:07I am feeling very relieved that we have a lead.
06:10It gives us a slight buffer zone.
06:12We're on the move, but we're not covering a massive distance, which another team could do.
06:18The thought of waiting around is absolutely awful to me.
06:22I think you've done good.
06:24Really, really good.
06:26Departing just under seven hours after their arrivals.
06:31Get the correct transport, make the right decisions, because, you know, Tom and Caroline, they had a head to start, so we need to catch up with them.
06:38Elizabeth and Letitia.
06:41I think the coastal route seems to be less in terms of kilometres.
06:44I think, though, that the inland route may have better roads, better connections, because of the bigger cities.
06:51Yeah, I feel ready to get to Kaniakamari.
06:55Game on.
06:57The sisters' first step to reach the finish line, head inland to the state's cultural capital of Mysuru.
07:04What time is the bus to Mysore?
07:094.45.
07:10Is it a sleeper?
07:11Yeah, sleeper.
07:12Yeah, sleeper.
07:13Okay.
07:13That's it.
07:14That's it.
07:14That's it.
07:14That's it.
07:15That's it.
07:15I'm like, yeah, motivation, let's go.
07:19We can do this.
07:20Let's just try our best, and our best will just get us there.
07:26En route with a night train bus.
07:31Bus.
07:31Also making their departure.
07:35I'm nervous.
07:36Finn and Sean Ed.
07:38The finish line is Kaniakamari.
07:41A tantalising 54 minutes behind the sisters.
07:45That's the last time we're opening an envelope.
07:47It's not going to be straightforward.
07:49It's going to be a hard leg, I think.
07:51Thank you very much.
07:52Thank you so much.
07:54Bye.
07:54Here we go.
07:58We've got this.
07:59We've just got to plan it well.
08:01The major cities like Bangalore seems quite big.
08:04We really need to use that to our advantage.
08:06Ask as many people as we can.
08:08Get as much information as we can.
08:10I don't think anything else really matters this leg now,
08:12other than just focusing on speed.
08:14There's no room for mistakes, really.
08:17Do you speak English?
08:19Do you know any buses going to Bangalore?
08:21What's he saying?
08:23Is it a moment to follow him?
08:26Cool.
08:26Happy Saturday.
08:27OK, we're going.
08:28Where are we?
08:30Oh, I'm going.
08:33This feels dodgy.
08:36I mean, that bus doesn't look functionable.
08:37We're following this guy.
08:44I think he's taking us to get bus tickets.
08:47I'm not really sure.
08:50Ah, tourists.
08:52Ask me.
08:53I'm a tourist.
08:54Abyss.
08:55Hello.
08:55Yes?
08:57Thank you very much.
08:57Thank you so much.
09:00Bungalow.
09:00Bungalow.
09:01Bungalow, yes.
09:01As soon as possible today.
09:05Heading inland, they stick to their proven strategy,
09:09staying close to major cities with strong transport links.
09:14Stay good.
09:15Thank you so much.
09:16Thank you very much.
09:17I think my competitiveness has kind of ranked up a notch.
09:21I think I'm a lot more competitive than Finn.
09:23If he doesn't win, he doesn't want to be too disappointed,
09:26whereas I'll just be disappointed for probably a few years
09:29and then I'll get over it.
09:31300 kilometres south,
09:35Caroline and Tom are approaching their destination, Udupi.
09:39Thomas?
09:40Mm.
09:41Thomas?
09:41Yes?
09:41I hate to tell you, but we're only a few minutes away.
09:44Thomas?
09:45OK.
09:46OK?
09:47I avoid ever having to wake him up,
09:49because it's normally really unpleasant.
09:51Sometimes I've even taken him in a hot cup of tea or a bacon sandwich
09:54and I leave it beside him,
09:56tell him I've done it, and then just run.
09:59It's been beautiful scenery.
10:00It's been a jungle, very, very marshland and wetlands.
10:03Mm.
10:04And some beautiful water buffalo with their symbiotic birds.
10:08Mm.
10:08They're beautiful.
10:10Mm.
10:10Good.
10:10Good.
10:10Good.
10:10Good.
10:10Good.
10:11Good.
10:11Good.
10:13The coastal city is flanked on one side by the Western Ghats
10:17and on the other, the Arabian Sea.
10:20We're in Udupi.
10:21But these natural barriers can limit onward transport options.
10:26Excuse me, sir.
10:27Hi.
10:27Do you have two minutes just to help us, please?
10:29Oh, thank you so much.
10:31Um, we need to get to Kochi.
10:33Kochi.
10:33Do you know if the train is one of the fastest ways to get there?
10:36One minute.
10:37Oh, thank you for looking.
10:40There are multiple trains, but there are more seats available right now.
10:44Oh.
10:45No tickets.
10:46No.
10:46Oh.
10:48A bit of a kick in the teeth.
10:50Do you know if there's buses tomorrow?
10:52Tomorrow there is a AC sleeper.
10:545.25.
10:55That's a 5.25 in the afternoon.
10:58My worry is it's not exactly race mode for me.
11:01Physically, nothing else we can do.
11:04And I will sleep well tonight if we know us books.
11:07Would it be OK if you could help us and book two tickets?
11:10Yeah.
11:11For the bus tomorrow night?
11:13An overnight bus will take Caroline and Tom 500 kilometres south
11:17to the Keralyn city of Kochi.
11:21But not till tomorrow night,
11:23meaning a delay in Udipi.
11:26With our bus not being until tomorrow afternoon,
11:29I'm quite worried about having Elizabeth and Letitia on our tail.
11:32Finn and Sean, they're only about 45 minutes behind them.
11:35I think they're both breathing down our neck.
11:40Oh, this looks quite fancy, doesn't it?
11:44It's even got a door.
11:45Oh!
11:48Put it, put it on it.
11:50Oh, right.
11:50Setting off from Goa...
11:56So now it is race, race, race.
11:59Elizabeth and Letitia board an overnight bus to Mysuru.
12:03We'll be waking up in a completely different city.
12:06While Finn and Sean Edge also opt for sleeper travel,
12:10bound for Bengaluru.
12:13Tom and Caroline did have a head start.
12:14They may have spent this day going as far as they can.
12:18If that's the case, they will be further than us.
12:22We're going hundreds of kilometres tonight.
12:24We just need to get that extra little push to win.
12:27I think we can do it.
12:29Finn and Sean Edge are just an hour behind,
12:31so we do need to keep that lead ahead of them.
12:35This leg is now on average.
12:36What do you know what I mean?
12:41What we've got now is we've got the opportunity
12:44to catch a load of hours up by just bombing it south.
12:48Trailing the leaders by 17 hours,
12:51Ryan and Melvin hope to kick-start their comeback.
12:54If we go inland, Melv, we're going to probably lose it again.
12:58We're just going to waste our time.
12:58It's about getting there as quick as possible.
13:00It is.
13:01We both still want to win.
13:02Yes.
13:02We both still want to win this, and we've got a chance.
13:04We have got to get as far south as we can.
13:06And if it's a taxi, then...
13:08That's what it's going to be.
13:09And if we run out of money, then we run out of money.
13:11We need to get it.
13:12The earlier we do it, the sooner we're on our way.
13:14OK.
13:15All right?
13:17Due to cost-effective travel across India,
13:20all of the teams have been able to preserve funds
13:22for the final leg.
13:25How far south can you take us?
13:27Bangalore.
13:28Yeah?
13:29Bangalore is 350 kilometres.
13:31It's fine. We'll go.
13:32Get the car, go to Bangalore.
13:34Yeah.
13:35For Brian and Melvin,
13:36spending nearly 40% of the remaining cash
13:39on a taxi to Mangalore,
13:41it's a crucial boost.
13:44Right. Good.
13:47So you think we'll get there about 6 o'clock in the morning?
13:50Yeah.
13:50OK.
13:51We're only going to be there for a quick cup of tea,
13:53wash under your armpits and carry on.
13:55We've got half a chance there of...
13:57..of doing some.
13:59Timer, yeah.
14:00Yeah.
14:01Winning the race would be absolutely brilliant.
14:04What an achievement to do that with your brother.
14:07If Tom and Caroline aren't hundreds of kilometres in front of them,
14:10then they're doing something wrong, aren't they?
14:12They just need a bit of bad luck and one missed connection,
14:15and we can catch up.
14:18We'll catch up.
14:20If we won and I could see Melvin's face,
14:24it would be fantastic.
14:27Money can't buy that.
14:28That would be brilliant.
14:29Whilst three teams race through the night,
14:34Caroline and Tom are the only pair at a standstill.
14:37Gets us to where we're going.
14:39Well, it does.
14:40It gets us bloody close to it.
14:43MUSIC PLAYS
14:45On the outskirts of Udipi,
15:02the Jumadi Islands,
15:05an archipelago situated in the delta of the Ceta and Suverna rivers,
15:11attracting rare bird species,
15:14including the black-backed dwarf Kingfisher.
15:18Look at those two, seriously.
15:19Whoa, whoa, whoa.
15:20Yellowy-green.
15:21Oh, yeah.
15:21They look like lemon and lime parrots.
15:24So this is like a little water safari.
15:27It is, yeah.
15:28It's turned out to be a little bird-watching exhibition.
15:32It's brilliant.
15:35Still waiting for their bus to depart,
15:38Caroline and Tom.
15:39And it's the calm before the storm, Thomas.
15:42Because it's bound to get so manic later.
15:52That was lovely.
15:55India delivers.
15:57Pretty cool.
15:58Just amazing.
16:01I thought I'd be too old to travel
16:04and experience what I've done.
16:06Because you always hear about the young travelling and backpacking.
16:09And yet I now realise that I can be just as capable and quick.
16:13It doesn't have to slow you down.
16:15You've kind of been tied down for 20 years.
16:18And now all of a sudden,
16:20you can go and do whatever you like.
16:23I can now.
16:23I was frightened of, and this is being quite serious,
16:26possibly one day being lonely.
16:28Yeah.
16:28And just drifting my time until then, without a purpose.
16:32Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:33It's been quite sad to hear that you felt like you'd lost a bit of purpose.
16:38We never really spoke about it, you know?
16:40Yeah, that's true.
16:40Sometimes it's difficult to reveal yourself to your child
16:44as a person rather than just their parent.
16:47Yes, yeah, I know.
16:48It could possibly be awkward or a bit embarrassing.
16:51I now view you as more of a friend as well as a mother.
16:56I think before, you were very much a mother figure in the household.
17:00It's enabled me to see you in a different light.
17:03Oh, I'm so pleased.
17:06Travelling with you has been probably the best experience of my life.
17:11Oh, that's really nice to hear.
17:13It really has.
17:14It has been great.
17:16I think we both helped each other out a lot more than we could actually ever imagine.
17:24I wrote that in my journal, and I wrote something else in my journal
17:27I kind of want to read to you.
17:29Let me go grab it.
17:33I'm actually going to read it because I'm sure you'd laugh at the spelling mistakes.
17:41Oh, I love them.
17:42This was a note to self on leg six when we were at the carpet place.
17:48I keep having a feeling that me and mum will win, but I think we already have.
17:55Just remember how lucky you are to be travelling the world,
17:57seeing the best things you couldn't even dream of with your mother
18:01and having the best time ever.
18:03I remember how well me and mum got on, how fun she is, and just how much you love her.
18:11I appreciate these times and these memories, because there will be a time that I can't.
18:17This to me is winning.
18:18No amount of money can make me realise all of this.
18:20It was absolutely lovely, thank you.
18:26It's okay.
18:27I'm feeling very valued and very lucky and totally loved by Thomas.
18:38My son reintroduced me to the world and given me a second chance of life when I thought that might have passed me by.
18:45All right, we've had a lovely time.
18:48I think it's back into race mode now.
18:51Definitely.
18:52What a lovely thing for a young man to be able to express and write down.
19:01350 kilometres east.
19:03It's very tired.
19:04Oh.
19:06Oh.
19:10Let's go, Wendy.
19:11Let's go, let's go, let's go.
19:16Bengaluru.
19:17Celebrated as the garden city of India.
19:20Home to one of the largest flower markets in Asia.
19:24We need a bus.
19:25Madurai.
19:26Madurai.
19:27Madurai, yeah.
19:27Pay off one.
19:28Today?
19:29Yeah, today.
19:29Oh, wow.
19:30OK, that's good.
19:32Ken and Sean Ed are looking to secure bus tickets to hurtle them 400 kilometres south to Madurai, in the Tamil region of India.
19:41Our last training session before the big day.
19:44Run, Sean Ed, run.
19:46The bus is until five, so we have a couple of hours to kill.
19:49So I think we're going to explore the city and enjoy the last few days we have on the race.
19:54Mmm, that hummus is good.
19:57It's good.
19:57It's the nicest job set part.
20:02But here we are, nearly at the final, and we're actually having a whale of a time.
20:08Both a lot stronger than we initially thought we were.
20:11We can rely on each other, depend on each other.
20:14Yeah.
20:15This race has kind of done a lot for us without us kind of realising.
20:19You've still been strong through it all.
20:24Still been very resilient.
20:27I appreciate it.
20:30I appreciate everything.
20:34I'm not going to cry.
20:37I'm not crying in a dota place.
20:42It's been a journey and a path.
20:44It has.
20:46It definitely has.
20:47This race has shown sides that we may have not seen, for the both of us, I'd say.
20:55Wow.
20:57Look at the flowers.
20:58Oh, wow.
20:59It's a lot of flowers.
21:02Shoya's always been there for me.
21:04She gets up in the night and has my diabetes.
21:06She's very understanding.
21:08She cares a lot.
21:09So, what do they do with them?
21:11Just decorations and stuff.
21:12Wedding item.
21:13Wedding item.
21:14Marriage.
21:15You get matching ones.
21:16Matching flowers.
21:17Oh, yay!
21:18Little neck things.
21:20You never ask for stuff like that.
21:24Can we have it around our neck?
21:29And you got a bracelet as well.
21:30Oh, yeah.
21:31You need to pay him, how?
21:32Oh, my gosh.
21:34Yeah, yeah.
21:36We've watched each other go up, really.
21:38We're like best friends and boyfriend and girlfriend.
21:42Oh, we could get married now.
21:44Um.
21:47We can walk over the finish line, come in first with them on.
21:50We can wear our flowers first.
21:52Yeah.
21:53I think the life for Ashland would be quite boring.
21:57It would be quite dull.
21:58I feel very, very lucky.
22:00I feel very fortunate to have Matt trying to add.
22:09So, we get on here.
22:11Which is the first class?
22:14First class.
22:16After a seven-hour journey through the night,
22:19Brian and Melvin have pulled ahead of the race leaders
22:22and look to be extending their lead by train
22:25to the coastal city of Corricode.
22:30See, that's quite pretty, isn't it?
22:33Yeah, it's nice, isn't it?
22:34They have croconals, it's far south.
22:36Kerala, believed by some to mean land of coconut trees.
22:45A tropical state with a labyrinth of lagoons, backwaters and canals.
22:51Dotting its waters are its Ketuvalum boats,
22:55once used to transport rice and spices,
22:57now transformed into floating hotels.
23:02It is slotted into place, isn't it?
23:04We got straight out of the cab.
23:07And within two hours, we've got a train.
23:09There's a train, which we're now on.
23:11It's that little glimmer saying, well, you could do it.
23:13You might.
23:14You might do it.
23:15You want to go from England?
23:17We're going to Cozy Cody.
23:21Cozy Cody is known as a food city.
23:24Food city.
23:25Food city?
23:26Yeah, yeah.
23:26Tomorrow, we're going to Cochy.
23:29Train is there, good one.
23:30It's a good train.
23:31Can we book that train when we go into Cozy Cody today?
23:35Tomorrow, I will check the train.
23:38I will check.
23:38Just see me.
23:40One train is there, 1.45.
23:43It will reach for evening, 5.30.
23:47Thank you for helping us.
23:49Melvin.
23:50Melvin.
23:51Brian.
23:52Brian.
23:52What's your name?
23:53Mansu.
23:53Mansu.
23:55Before you, UK.
23:56Yeah.
23:57We're all in India.
23:58Yeah.
23:58Remember it?
23:59No.
23:59I don't remember it.
24:00Yeah, we don't remember it.
24:02How old are we?
24:02We are.
24:03If I could apologise, I would.
24:05Season 1, this system, train system.
24:08Train system.
24:09Beginning world.
24:10This system, you gave me.
24:11Did we do it?
24:13After 13 hours on a bus.
24:20So, this bus station, how long?
24:25Five minutes.
24:26OK, five minutes.
24:27Can we get a bus to Madurai from here?
24:31Yeah, yeah?
24:33OK, perfect.
24:34Elizabeth and Leticia are approaching Mysuru.
24:38All our hard work has led up to this.
24:41Like, all the night buses we've taken, all the sleeper trains we've taken.
24:45Like, it's all worth it for the win.
24:48And then, sharing the win together, that would just be the cherry on the top.
24:56Can we also get the bags?
25:01No, we need our bags.
25:04We need our...
25:05Can we open the booth, thank you.
25:10Unaware that their lead has slept, Caroline and Tom are trying to locate their pre-booked bus to Kochi.
25:16Bus operator name, Kalada Travels.
25:21Let's go over there, I think.
25:22OK, let's go over there.
25:23I don't know how we get there.
25:24Oh, God, back to the chaos.
25:28God, we mustn't be late.
25:29Yeah, I know.
25:30Oh, we've got to find it, Tom, let's see.
25:32There's a sleeper bus here.
25:33Where?
25:33Right there.
25:34Yeah, but that's not the one we've got.
25:36Yeah.
25:36Do you speak English?
25:38Where do we get the sleeper bus to Kochi?
25:41Over there.
25:42Over there.
25:43Thank you very much.
25:44Thomas, come on.
25:45Is it here?
25:46Oh, shit, Mum, look here.
25:48Yee!
25:49Yeah, the bus.
25:50Well done.
25:51I've got the ticket.
25:52Oh, have you got it?
25:55I'm just nervous.
25:57It's horrible.
25:59My mind just can't rest.
26:01There's been a lot of time since we arrived here yesterday.
26:04Yeah.
26:05And we're only leaving now.
26:07I know that's given enough time for Elizabeth and Letitia and Finn and Sean and even potentially Brian and Melvin to even go past us because we didn't travel that much distance.
26:16As the pair forge ahead again.
26:19So where does the buses turn?
26:22What can you do in Germany?
26:23Just here?
26:24Yeah.
26:25OK.
26:26Finn and Sean Ed are trying to escape Bengaluru, the second largest city in India.
26:32I think this is right.
26:33Are you sure?
26:34I think so.
26:35We're wondering if this bus is here.
26:39This is actually here, actually.
26:40Yeah, so the bus comes here.
26:42Yeah.
26:43Oh, what a relief.
26:44Do you know where there's a shop that sells, like, chips?
26:47Just a moment.
26:49Be here.
26:50Yeah.
26:53He really wants to help.
26:54He's very eager to help, isn't he?
26:55Yeah.
26:56Bless him.
26:57Oh, thank you so much.
26:58Thank you so much.
26:59You didn't need to do that.
27:00How much do we owe you?
27:01No, no, no, no.
27:02Are you sure?
27:03No, no.
27:04Thank you so much.
27:05I just wanted to help, actually.
27:06Oh, thank you so much.
27:07You've been so helpful.
27:08You're a very kind person.
27:09Thank you so much.
27:10Thank you so much.
27:11Thank you so much.
27:12You didn't need to do that.
27:13How much do we owe you?
27:14No, no, no, no, no.
27:15Are you sure?
27:16No, no, no.
27:17Thank you so much.
27:18I just wanted to help, actually.
27:19Oh, thank you so much.
27:20You've been so helpful.
27:21You're a very kind person.
27:22Thank you so much.
27:23I have been lots of places, OK?
27:25Yes.
27:26Sometimes you get help.
27:27Yeah.
27:28Sometimes you don't know the language, also.
27:29Yes, exactly.
27:30Very tough.
27:31Yeah.
27:32What's your name?
27:33I've been born, ex-president of America, Bill Clinton, who was there.
27:36Oh, wow.
27:37That's the real name.
27:38Wow.
27:39You've been named after him.
27:40All the best.
27:41Thank you so, so much.
27:42Thank you so much.
27:43Have fun.
27:44Thank you so much.
27:45Have a good evening.
27:46Stomp it.
27:47Oh, he's got bananas as well.
27:50Oreos.
27:51Oh, bless him.
27:53That's actually...
27:54That's the nicest thing someone's actually probably done for us.
28:00Is this us?
28:01Yeah.
28:04Look at that.
28:05No dust at all.
28:06This is so bougie.
28:08What a good sleep of us to end it on.
28:12I think I've settled with India now.
28:15The amount of time we've spent here, I think I've really adapted.
28:20The amount of different people you come across in these places,
28:23it's a cool country.
28:25There's a lot more to this country that meets the ire.
28:28That's exactly what I wanted to get out of travelling and out of this experience.
28:34Look where I am now.
28:36About to finish the race first.
28:38In India, I thought I'd have to go home because I was struggling so much.
28:42As the couple take their second consecutive night bus...
28:49Here's a tuk-tuk.
28:50Are you a tuk-tuk?
28:51You're available.
28:52One team take a break from the road in Coricode.
28:5740 rupees.
28:5840 rupees.
29:00A prosperous trading hub for nearly two millennia,
29:08it's known as the City of Spices.
29:12You can see how much cash we've actually got, yeah?
29:15For Brian and Melvin, who have travelled 600 kilometres non-stop from Panagi,
29:21a chance to take stock.
29:2315, 16, 17, 18.
29:2524,841.
29:27So we've got 20 for the running.
29:281, 2, 3, 4, 800 and a bit for Grub and Beer.
29:33Money isn't going to matter about chasing the leaders.
29:36It's not.
29:37We can't do any more than what we've done, can we?
29:40No.
29:41So money is irrelevant.
29:43Yes.
29:44The unknown on this leg.
29:46If we could create more time, we would.
29:49If we could two make time.
29:51That's what we want to do.
29:52It's Tina Turner, isn't it?
29:53No, it was a chair.
29:55Was it chair?
29:56The chair.
29:57Melv, hungry?
29:58Yeah, I think it's time.
30:00Beer, biryani, naan bread.
30:03Go for it.
30:04That's it.
30:05We're gone.
30:06Can you get off my bed, by the way?
30:08Because this is mine tonight.
30:09Cheeky kit.
30:10Yeah.
30:11There's yours.
30:12We've done everything that we can
30:16in order to pre-put the leaderboard.
30:20We are now relying on everybody else to cock up.
30:23We're going to get into that show.
30:25We will do everything we can.
30:34Would you want to have chai or South Indian coffee?
30:38Chai?
30:39Chai, please.
30:40Yes, please.
30:41Hello.
30:42Ground down by a 13-hour overnight bus to Mysuru,
30:47Elizabeth and Letitia have found a bed for the night
30:50and a homestay run by Sarchin.
30:53I can see that a lot of your...
30:55is from your travel.
30:56Yeah.
30:57Sarika is the one who picks all of these up.
30:59I love it.
31:00She's the one who decorates the house.
31:02I just live here.
31:05Yeah.
31:08So, all the rooms are booked by a wedding party.
31:12Have you attended an Indian wedding in the UK?
31:14We haven't attended any Indian wedding.
31:17So, just like a night or a couple of nights
31:20before the wedding, they have something called Sangeet.
31:23Sangeet literally translates to music in Hindi.
31:26Okay.
31:27So, it's like the bride and her friends
31:30and the groom and his friends,
31:32they put up a show, dance and stuff like that.
31:34It's not a South Indian tradition, but because of the movies,
31:37it's become so popular that even South Indians have started...
31:40They've adopted it, yeah.
31:42If you're up for it, I'll check with the family
31:44if they're cool with you guys coming in.
31:46Oh, lovely. Yes, please.
31:51Gosh, this is our dream.
31:55We've got to dress up as well, so...
31:57Sarika.
31:58Look at this.
32:00Lovely.
32:01The earlier we get ready, the better.
32:03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:04Chop, chop, lips, lips, lips, lips.
32:06How long do we have?
32:07Like 15 minutes?
32:08As fast as possible.
32:09You're in a race, right?
32:10Exactly!
32:12Yay!
32:13Yay!
32:16An Indian wedding typically lasts three days.
32:19The highest number of guests ever recorded, 150,000.
32:24According to Hindu faith, once a couple is married,
32:28they are bound to each other for seven lifetimes.
32:33Thank you so much.
32:34Wow, he's really going for it.
32:35The hips.
32:36Love it.
32:37They seem so welcoming.
32:38How can you, you know, you can come to the wedding.
32:39That's how it is.
32:40There are people who just go to a wedding, even if they don't know anyone, they're going
32:44to show up and then...
32:45Yeah.
32:46You know, the food is all.
32:47No, no.
32:48No, no.
32:49I've done it.
32:50No, no.
32:51I've done it.
32:52That is not common.
32:53Wow, wow, wow.
32:54This is definitely topping off the end of the race in each other.
32:55Wow.
32:56Wow.
32:57Wow.
32:58Wow.
32:59Wow.
33:00Wow.
33:01Wow.
33:02Wow.
33:03Wow.
33:04Wow.
33:05Wow.
33:06Wow.
33:07Wow.
33:08Wow.
33:09Wow.
33:10Wow.
33:11Wow.
33:12Wow.
33:13Wow.
33:14Wow.
33:15Wow.
33:16Wow.
33:17Yeah.
33:18Zero r känny.
33:19Oh wow.
33:20I love you having such a good time.
33:21He's loving it.
33:22He's giving it energy.
33:23Oh.
33:24At the beginning of race I feel like me and my sisters' relationship was strained.
33:30Let me take a picture of you.
33:32This looks like, good on you.
33:34I feel like how we were when we were kids.
33:39We've become more comfortable in each other's presence.
33:42So I feel like the race has definitely allowed us to make time for each other
34:04Family is really important to me. I think at the beginning of the race
34:08I had so many assumptions of Laetitia and I've slowly let those go and I'm seeing Laetitia
34:16For who she is now and not thinking of her as like a little seven-year-old girl anymore
34:25I'm just so happy about no, there's my sister of ours able to take this journey with
34:31We definitely broke down the barrier of opening up
34:41We know we're there for each other and I feel like
34:45It's part of our story is something we've done together and we'll remember it forever
35:01Hello mate, two for Kochi please. There you go. Thank you
35:11Simple, isn't it?
35:13250
35:14After spending the night in Corrie Code
35:17Brian and Melvin have booked an afternoon train to Kochi
35:21But first time to dip their feet in the Indian Ocean
35:25Oh, that's all right, isn't it?
35:29That's nice, yeah
35:35A picture! You want to take a picture of us?
35:37Yeah
35:38That's good
35:39He's printing them now, look
35:42Thank you
35:43Thank you
35:44It's actually not a bad little photograph, is it really?
35:47The photo's not bad
35:49It's actually quite a good photo
35:51We're 62, 65 years of age and we've had to wait this long
35:55And we've needed something like this to say, come on
35:58Let's go and do this, let's go and have that adventure we've always talked about
36:02You keep that photo, Mel
36:04I will, mate
36:05Get a nice frame for it
36:07Well, I'm going to get a pound then
36:09No, you need something decent
36:11I do believe that we've grown closer
36:13Because we've done a lot of things together again, as we did when we were kiddies
36:17I don't think I'm going to need a therapist
36:19We're not going to pick up the phone until you're bright
36:21Have you got any photos at your house at all?
36:23No, none at all
36:24You've got nothing, no photos up?
36:26At all, of anyone?
36:27No!
36:28No, no, no, no, no, no
36:29So why don't you frame that one
36:31I will do
36:32And pick that one and that's the first photo
36:33I will do
36:36From growing up as kids and then we went our separate ways
36:40And so we started our life together
36:43And then at the back end of our lives we're back together again
36:47It's pretty special indeed
36:50Feels nice, doesn't it?
36:52We have got a train to catch
36:53Let's go
36:54Let's go
36:55Onwards, yeah?
36:59It's so colourful
37:00Look at those flowers hanging up there
37:02Caroline and Tom's long-awaited 11-hour overnight bus
37:06Has put them back in contention
37:08It does remind me a little bit of Europe with the quaint streets
37:11Cobble pavements, it's lovely
37:14Meaning they're the first to arrive in Kochi
37:17The jewel of Kerala
37:18A collision of cultures
37:25Where a 450-year-old synagogue stands beside mosques and Christian churches
37:33And Katakali dancers perform in the courtyards
37:37Look at that!
37:39That is massive!
37:40On the shoreline, medieval Chinese fishing nets brought to the Malabar coast by traders from the east
37:48Cantilever over the shallows
37:51Oh, it's literally done by stones! Look at that!
37:55Anything in the net?
37:58This is like being a pirate of the Caribbean
38:01Ooh!
38:02Feels like we're walking the plank, Mum
38:04I know, I know
38:06Do you do this every day?
38:07Every day, early morning, at 9 o'clock, chatting
38:10Okay
38:12And two acres finishing
38:13It's very efficient, only lacking
38:15Oh!
38:16Oh, can I pull it?
38:18Oh, no way!
38:20This trip, on a more personal note, for me, has been eye-opening
38:25Whoa! Stones coming in!
38:27Wow! Look at that!
38:29That was incredible watching the stones come down
38:32I came out of school very confused and quite scared of the future
38:38I was taught you had to be good at school to do well in life
38:45Wow!
38:47Wow!
38:48That's like see-through
38:50It's given me just a bit of confidence to know that even though I'm not necessarily book smart
38:56You can learn so much about yourself and about the real world by just throwing yourself out there
39:00It's coming back up!
39:01It's coming back up!
39:02Look, what's the stones?
39:04Oh, it's so cool
39:06I like stumbling along
39:08Stuff like this
39:09Cool stuff like this, yeah
39:10Yeah, yeah
39:1575 kilometres north
39:18We've got to leave Kochi tonight
39:20Ryan and Melvin are in hot pursuit
39:22There's a crane at 1213, no tickets
39:26There are many taxi operators
39:29How is that?
39:30We've got about 15,000 rupees, so we could do that
39:33300 kilometres to the east, Elizabeth and Letitia are on their way to Madurai
39:39Hopefully, you know, Phil and Sean Ed haven't caught up
39:43Or Brian and Melvin
39:45Their last major transport hub before the finish line
39:49I feel like as soon as we get on that transport to checkpoint, all the nerves are coming, you know
39:54It is very emotional
39:56It's just like, um, closing this chapter, I guess
40:00Already there
40:02Hey, I get to have three my handys
40:06Name?
40:07Sean Ed
40:08Do you like your name?
40:09Er, Finn
40:11Finn and Sean Ed squeeze in a final souvenir from Madurai
40:16How does it all start off with your name?
40:21She's getting her name
40:23Oh, no, that's not... she's not going to be happy about that
40:27Oh, bless, I feel so bad
40:31It's gone kind of wrong
40:33Aw, thanks for showing how much you love me
40:36You wrote your name and my name in your hand
40:40Oh, it's really nice
40:42Finn and Sean Ed
40:44Thank you, thank you very much
40:47The plan is now to go pick up our bags and book our final transfer of the race
40:53I'm sorry, but I couldn't think of anything worse than having Finn and Sean Ed
40:57Yeah, alright
40:59This is all funny
41:03As the landmass of India narrows, so does the race
41:07With all four teams closing in on each other and the finish line
41:12In Kochi
41:14Can you tell us where to go to book a sleeper bus, please?
41:19Caroline and Tom are raring to get on the move
41:22Not in the whole of Kochi?
41:26No, no, no, thanks
41:28I think we should just consider a private taxi the whole way
41:34OK, well, my only concern is we found out it's about 340 kilometres
41:40Mm-hm
41:42And would that not be just too long for one driver all the way?
41:46We've got the budget and we've always said we want to...
41:49We don't want to finish with budget, we want to finish first, so let's do that
41:53Well, let's look at that then, I'm happy to
41:55I think now we just need to find something that keeps us moving
41:57While they search for a driver willing to take them to Kanya Kumari
42:03266 kilometres east in Madurai
42:07Spin, spin, spin, just to push ourselves to the checkpoint
42:17Elizabeth and Letitia are adopting a similar strategy
42:21We'd like to go to Kanya Kumari
42:24Yeah, Kanya Kumari
42:26You can take us to Kanya Kumari?
42:28The other side of town, Finn and Sean Ed
42:31We need to get to Kanya Kumari
42:33Do you think it's possible to book us a taxi there?
42:36I'll try, but I don't know about the charges, let me speak
42:39OK, yeah, if you could get the price for us that would be great
42:42So at what time will you want the taxi?
42:45Like right now, as soon as you can
42:46As soon as you can
42:48Yeah, as soon as you can

42:57And we need to get there as quickly as possible
43:00We're in Kochi
43:02The only way that we will be able to catch up on the leaders
43:06Will be to use the rupees that we've got left
43:11And throw it at it

43:27Let's go, go, go
43:29Kanya Kumari, Formula One driver today
43:32Still got a chance of getting in first
43:34It's really important that we listen to each other, communicate
43:39And just try to think as rationally as possible
43:43We've got this, we just need to be wise
43:47Not stupid
43:51After thousands of miles raced through China, Nepal and India
43:57It's the closest the race has been in 51 days
44:00How far is it?
44:02Oh my God
44:04Oh, we're close
44:06So we're close to the bus stand?

53:27We can't all come first
53:28We've gone what, 12,000 kilometres
53:30It's been more than just the distance
53:32It's been a journey for us
53:34I'm a bit sad that the race is over now though
53:37We're going home
53:38We're going home
53:39Let's go
53:47Whilst I'm standing here sweaty, smelly, exhausted
53:52I'm actually feeling on top of the world
53:55Throughout the race I've learnt the confidence to not care about what people think
53:58And I've learnt that from mum
54:00Woo
54:01Where are you from?
54:02England
54:03Lovely jubbly
54:04It's just been glorious to get to know my son as a person, as a travelling companion
54:10We've discovered each other as people and it's as if the generations between us have disappeared
54:15And it's just been absolutely magical
54:17I'm feeling really really proud of ourselves for like pushing through right into the end
54:24Oh wow!
54:26It looks like a picture
54:28It's an experience I will never forget
54:30Oh

54:45And even you know, I hope you feel comfortable sharing your life too
54:49Yeah
54:50I'm really proud of us
54:5351 days of travelling all to come down to a 45 minute difference of coming first
54:59I think we've done well to actually make it to the finish line
55:02We started this journey quite immature
55:06We had a lot of room for improvement
55:09A lot to learn
55:11We hadn't experienced any of the world
55:14And I think we're going home with so many more life skills
55:19Wow
55:20Oh, I thought you were an elephant
55:23I feel very fortunate and very grateful to have done the race with you so

56:18And really pleased that we've done it together
56:22I don't do that
56:25Many times as a kid I was told I wasn't good enough to do this or to do that
56:29Well you can do anything you want to do
56:31And the way!
56:34What we've done is we've got to know one another
56:38We have rekindled a few lost memories
56:41And we've made a few more as well
