00:00I
00:30It looks quite like a fairy tale here, very different to Delhi.
00:51Tucked away in India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh, the Kangra Valley.
00:57Home to Dharamshala's cricket stadium, one of the highest in the world, thousands of
01:06acres of tea plantations and the fifth checkpoint.
01:13Are you tea drinkers?
01:15Melvin loves his tea.
01:16I am, mate, yeah.
01:18Very tea demanding.
01:20After 33 days on the road and almost 10,000 kilometres raced so far...
01:26Oh my gosh, that's actually the nicest green tea.
01:28Really?
01:29Yeah.
01:30A chance to take stock.
01:32Are you having the same problems that I'm having with my older brother, with your older
01:37sister?
01:38What problems?
01:39Well, yeah.
01:40I'm just trying to figure out what problems we've had.
01:43It's more communication.
01:44Sometimes I just want things to be clear and communicated.
01:47And we're also getting to know each other again, in a part for quite a long time.
01:51We've had years and years apart, or we've missed 40 years of it.
01:54I forgot what a sod he can be.
01:57And he's forgotten what a little sod I am.
02:01Yeah.
02:02But now, five legs in, I'm thinking, we're okay, that's working.
02:05It's great to hear how they're bonding.
02:08It can be done and I feel like we can take that inspiration moving forward.
02:13And we're still working on it anyways.
02:15Maybe we can't say things yet, but they're coming.
02:18Yeah.
02:19They're coming.
02:20Hello.
02:21You too.
02:22Hi.
02:23How are you?
02:24Hello.
02:25Three teams have made it to the checkpoint, with only nine and a half hours between them.
02:30For the first time, Caroline and Tom have taken the lead.
02:35Haven't they done well?
02:37She is going quite.
02:39We found it really tough, actually.
02:41But it was all worth it, seeing our name at the top.
02:43We actually were really surprised to be first.
02:46We were delighted, yeah.
02:47And then the instant worry of how do we stay here.
02:50Yeah.
02:51I know exactly what you mean.
02:52We've all felt it.
02:53I mean, we don't have many legs left, you know.
02:56Hopefully Finn and Sean that ain't too far behind.
02:58Where do we think they are?
03:00Oh, watch up this hill.
03:09Left or right.
03:10There's too many turning ends.
03:1333 hours behind first place.
03:15So not a lot of people are on.
03:17He's helping us.
03:18OK, we'll go.
03:19Are you coming?
03:20The final team check in.
03:23I must say hello.
03:28Hello.
03:29Ready?
03:30Please sign in, Overleaf.
03:36Oh.
03:37Really far behind.
03:39Nothing we can do now.
03:41It is our first time being last, which is...
03:45Yeah, it's not the best feeling.
03:4724 hours behind third.
03:49Not nice to look at, is it?
03:52First, full leg and injured didn't go very well.
03:56We've...
03:57Well, me especially, I've struggled.
03:59I can't deal with crowds and noises and all of that stuff very well.
04:04And then when things go wrong, I basically just shut down.
04:12I'm so gutted.
04:13I can't help but be a bit disappointed in myself.
04:19I don't know.
04:20I always feel like...
04:22..what I do isn't good enough,
04:25and I feel like I need to do more and...
04:28..improve more.
04:31I don't know.
04:32I don't know why I'm that way.
04:34I just want everyone to be proud of me.
04:40And I struggle to be proud of myself most of the time.
04:49I don't want to just be second in the first leg,
04:51and then that's it.
04:52That's the highlight.
04:54It was fast, you were early.
05:105.13am.
05:12Good morning.
05:13Good morning.
05:14Good morning.
05:15This is for you.
05:17Thank you very much.
05:18You ready?
05:19Mm-hmm.
05:20Sasangir.
05:21All right?
05:22OK.
05:23Lovely.
05:24Thank you very much.
05:27Sasangir.
05:28Oh, my God.
05:29It's quite a long way.
05:321,900 kilometres to the south,
05:36on the southern tip of Gujarat,
05:39the sixth checkpoint, Sasangir.
05:43The village is the gateway to the Gujarat National Park.
05:48Dry, deciduous forest with large stretches of grassland,
05:54and the last remaining habitat for the endangered Asiatic lion.
05:58It's quite a long way.
05:59I'm afraid all I want to do is race, race, race and increase our lead.
06:09Obviously, we're first.
06:10We want to hold on to it.
06:11But my main aim is to experience what India has to offer,
06:15because we're never going to be here again.
06:17I don't want to just race, race, race.
06:19Right.
06:20To reach the sixth checkpoint,
06:24the teams will need to navigate four of India's western states,
06:30including the country's largest, Rajasthan.
06:35Coined the land of kings after the Rajput and Mughal dynasties,
06:40who left a legacy of magnificent forts and palaces.
06:46Teams could choose a more rural route,
06:50which weaves through the dry expanse of the great Indian desert.
06:55Or they could go via Rajasthan's brightly painted cities,
07:00well-connected to assist their many visiting tourists.
07:08I think this is a once-in-a-lifetime going through a desert.
07:11It's a completely different landscape.
07:13I haven't seen many deserts.
07:14It's very rural.
07:16Now I'm happy to avoid the major cities
07:18and have a calmer way of getting there as quickly as possible.
07:22I like the idea.
07:23OK.
07:25I think we make a very strong team.
07:27You're very determined.
07:29You're very keen to push on and move forward,
07:32whereas I'm probably a bit more laid-back.
07:34I'll teach you to slow down a little bit
07:36and appreciate your stuff.
07:38Can you call us a taxi to the bus station?
07:41As we're getting towards the end of the race,
07:43the decisions are harder.
07:45I'm trusting Thomas, I suppose.
07:49Come on, let's go.
07:52Now he's experiencing more of life.
07:54I just love being with him.
07:55I love his enthusiasm.
07:57I love his carefree attitude and want a little bit of that for myself.
08:02To see life more through his eyes.
08:05We're going.
08:06Tom's gamble.
08:08To venture into less explored territory,
08:11heading south through the Thar desert.
08:14We're trying to go to Jodhpur.
08:16We need a nice sleeve of us.
08:18We'll take that one.
08:192,800.
08:20What time do we arrive?
08:22Thomas has been really throwing himself into it today.
08:25He's finding out all we need to know.
08:27We're going to get Jodhpur there.
08:28I know, I know.
08:29It's really good.
08:30Halfway to the checkpoint.
08:31We would be covering the biggest distance now.
08:34That's incredible.
08:35That's super.
08:36Wow.
08:38As Carline and Tom resume their race...
08:45Look at this view.
08:46It's not even real.
08:48It would be nice being out here in the mountains.
08:5333 hours behind them,
08:55Finn and Sean Ed remain paused in McLeod Gange.
08:59When I'm crying,
09:00because I definitely will cry again.
09:01I know.
09:02As much as I probably want to be babied and be like,
09:04oh, it's okay.
09:06Tell me to just get a grip.
09:08Oh, that's a bit harsh.
09:09I can't really do that.
09:10I do need to wise up.
09:12I'm a big girl.
09:13I think it would be nice if we can now both work together.
09:16It's fine for her to get overwhelmed,
09:18but maybe if she can kind of push through it
09:20and make decisions with me,
09:22I think we'll get a lot further.
09:24There's been a lot of emotions in India, I think,
09:26but we are still here,
09:28and I think we are getting better.
09:30If you told me last year,
09:32in one year you'll be every day not knowing
09:34where we're actually going to sleep tonight,
09:36that's something I would have thought I would struggle with,
09:38but I actually really am enjoying that.
09:40You're learning new things about yourself with this.
09:43It's going to be a challenge to catch up,
09:45but it's not impossible.
09:47I think we can do it,
09:48and I think we will do it.
09:49We've learnt anything can happen.
09:53Oh, my shit.
09:55Ooh!
09:56Hello.
09:57Are they even real?
09:58Can I try feed?
09:59Ooh!
10:00Was that far?
10:08Manic, innit?
10:09Manic, yeah.
10:10It's manic.
10:11Hi.
10:13Second to depart.
10:14Brian and Melvin have made it to Amritsar in Punjab.
10:21I do like the idea of going through the desert, if I'm honest.
10:23Something I've always fancied.
10:24I think we'll be in the middle of nowhere,
10:26but as a crow flies, that's pretty straightforward.
10:28Correct.
10:29I think it'd be great.
10:30We would like to get to Jodhpur tonight.
10:33It's better for you in the 8pm.
10:35OK.
10:36Of 15 and a pop or so.
10:37OK.
10:38That gets us a long way, Brian.
10:41With their first connection south towards the great Indian desert booked,
10:46there's time for the brothers to explore.
10:49How beautiful is that?
10:50It's lovely, isn't it?
10:54Founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh guru Ram Dass,
10:59Amritsar is the holiest city in Sikhism.
11:04Its most sacred shrine, the Golden Temple.
11:09Got to wear a headscarf.
11:12There they are.
11:13I should do it.
11:14Just sort of like a...
11:15Twag?
11:16Yeah.
11:19I mean, it's quite an impressive building, isn't it?
11:22Following the tradition of selfless service known as Seva,
11:26the temple provides 100,000 free meals a day,
11:30giving Amritsar the accolade,
11:32the city where no one goes hungry.
11:37I'm desperately in need of the lumel.
11:39I've got stomach cramps.
11:41If I can find a sit-down toilet and then my stomach might go down.
11:46It's in spasms at the moment.
11:49OK, let's go then.
11:50All right?
11:51Yeah.
11:53There is a part of me saying,
11:55I don't go on a bus today, Brian.
11:58Stay in a hotel overnight.
12:00If we do that, we're going to be 24 hours behind everybody else.
12:04We can't afford to do it.
12:06We'll battle on.
12:07We'll be bottom of the pile if we miss...
12:09If I miss this bus.
12:19We just come from the mountains and here it's so flat already.
12:22Yeah.
12:23We're going so fast.
12:24Leaving the checkpoint four hours after Brian and Melvin,
12:27Elizabeth and Letitia are also arriving in Amritsar.
12:31Oh!
12:32Careful, don't do that.
12:33No, it's better.
12:35After two back-to-back buses,
12:37they're searching for their third connection
12:39to drive them south to the pilgrimage town of Pushkar.
12:44Hello, we have a bus ticket.
12:46Bus need.
12:47OK.
12:48OK.
12:50Is this it?
12:51Must be.
12:52I don't know, you need to ask.
12:57Oh, we should go and say hi.
12:59So, shall I make them jump?
13:01No.
13:02No, no, no, wait, wait.
13:03There's the girls.
13:04Hey, guys.
13:05Are you all right?
13:06What's somebody else?
13:07How are you doing?
13:08We've had the day here.
13:09You go to the temple?
13:10Yeah.
13:11It's a beautiful place.
13:12But he ain't feeling very well.
13:13No, I've got the jelly belly.
13:14Oh, even me.
13:15Oh, jelly belly.
13:16They're going into the desert then, I presume.
13:18Is it?
13:19Oh, no, no, no, not desert.
13:20We're going to Jodhpur.
13:21Oh, Jodhpur.
13:22It's a competition.
13:23We've just done...
13:24Oh, is that it?
13:25Right, we've got to go.
13:26Right.
13:27OK, good luck.
13:28Good luck, guys.
13:29I wasn't even expecting to see anybody.
13:31We closed the gap.
13:32Kind of.
13:33It's good seeing someone ahead
13:35rather than someone behind.
13:37They're very smart the girls are.
13:39They're smart cookies.
13:40We're in competition mode.
13:41We need to lie, cheat, and steal.
13:44Well, not steal, but lie and cheat.
13:48I don't think we've done anything wrong on the legs so far.
13:51We managed to book a bus out tonight.
13:53I don't think we could have done anything else.
13:55Brian and Melvin are living the luxury life.
13:59The exclusively luxurious life.
14:02Look at ours.
14:03Look, it's got tape on the front.
14:06Oh, gosh.
14:08Oi!
14:10All right?
14:11Yeah.
14:12OK.
14:13Wait till the girls, bro.
14:14Yeah, she's waving.
14:18Being ill in India is not fun.
14:20But Tom and Caroline have overtaken us,
14:22so we need to try and catch up and get first.
14:27I would say I'm very ambitious.
14:29I want to succeed.
14:30I agree with both on that ability to push ourselves, haven't we?
14:34Yeah.
14:35I don't think I've ever given up on anything I've ever tried.
14:38No, we don't give up.
14:45It's probably the most important leg for us.
14:48A lot of catching up to do, so...
14:50Yeah.
14:51The last team to depart the checkpoint, Finn and Seanhead.
14:56Needing to close the 33-hour gap on the race leaders.
15:00Shall I tell you what I'm thinking?
15:01Yeah.
15:02Quickest route.
15:03It's an in and out job.
15:04We get to the places we need to go.
15:06Short stops and go again.
15:08All the other teams know we're so far behind.
15:10But hopefully, their luck runs out now and ours kicks in.
15:14Well, I think we need to go to places that are very well connected.
15:18I know it's through big cities and I'm not going to like that,
15:21but it's probably better to stick on these well-travelled routes.
15:26The couple's plan.
15:28Back-to-back transport along the tourist trail.
15:32We want to find, maybe, like, an overnight transport
15:34that will get us as far as we can today.
15:36That would be best-case scenario.
15:39Bus service.
15:41Woo!
15:42Do buses go from Chandigarh to Jaipur?
15:45Yeah.
15:46This is the furthest we can get tonight towards Jaipur.
15:51Is there a bus tonight?
15:52Every year.
15:53We book.
15:55Thank you very much.
15:58We're moving, which is a very good start.
16:01We have onwards transport out.
16:05We are going.
16:06I think we will catch her.
16:07850 kilometres south, Jodhpur, called the Blue City for its houses
16:17decorated by the priestly Brahmin caste to distinguish their social superiority.
16:23On its outskirts, Salavas village, where Carline and Tom have arrived.
16:34Namaste.
16:35Namaste.
16:36Namaste.
16:39Oh, wow.
16:41They will work and stay with the Prajapats and their cooperative of 48 families.
16:47This is so cool.
16:48Do you guys live here?
16:49It's a home.
16:50We have 21 members in the house.
16:5321 members?
16:54You will meet all of them.
16:56This is my father's turban.
16:5710 metres long.
16:59And why do you wear a turban?
17:01My father is the boss of the house.
17:11This is very much a working village.
17:13I'm very nervous to try and not break one because I can imagine they're very brittle.
17:17You need to be very careful.
17:20This whole village is like an arty village and all the families help to make everything.
17:25This is a pottery family, so they're making water jugs.
17:29And then you've got other carpenter families.
17:32It's just a really nice community of everyone who works together and helps each other out.
17:37Being a labourer on a building site to do their job.
17:40That means you are actually a hard worker.
17:43I prefer being outside and working with my hands rather than in an office.
17:48Probably similar to everyone in this village.
17:50They are connected with the nature, more interesting.
17:53I like it.
17:54And it's good for the health as well.
17:55Yes, yeah, yeah.
17:56These are bodies moving.
17:57For me, my hobby comes in my job.
17:59That's what I'm looking to find, hopefully one day.
18:03For generations, Mr. Prajapat's family have specialised in crafting durries.
18:09Traditional cotton rugs.
18:11Once supplying the palaces of Maharajas, today their traditional manufacturing method prevails.
18:17Oh, my golly, Thomas.
18:21Wow!
18:22Gorgeous.
18:24Sit.
18:25This one.
18:28This one and this one.
18:30There.
18:31God, you can't even get one strand wrong, can you?
18:37It looks so difficult.
18:39Can I do left?
18:40No, no, this one.
18:42I don't know if I can do that.
18:43I struggle with my right hand.
18:44In this work, you need to be both-handed.
18:45You must use this hand.
18:46Oh, I was born with cerebral palsy.
18:50That's fine.
18:51I'd love to try and use the right.
18:52I would just do a bad job.
18:53I don't want to mess it up.
18:54And it's a nice carpet.
18:55That's all.
18:56I mean, if you are doing the well in that hand, then it's fine.
18:57Am I doing what?
18:58Am I doing what?
18:59He's doing so-so.
19:00He's a very strict teacher, eh?
19:01That's good.
19:02He has to be.
19:03That's genuinely the first time that I've openly said that I've got cerebral palsy.
19:16And his reaction was so anticlimactic in such a good way.
19:33He was just like, oh, okay.
19:35And it turned out that it didn't really matter.
19:39You're getting the hang of it.
19:41I think so.
19:42He's a really good teacher.
19:44I guess it's the start of breaking down a barrier in my own head.
19:47And it's nice to see that finally happening.
19:50No, I'm really enjoying it.
19:52Yes, that's important.
19:53It's great.
19:54I'm loving it.
19:56It was quite a revelation.
19:58He actually came out and said to a total stranger,
20:01I've got cerebral palsy.
20:03I'm really proud of him.
20:05How long does it take to know exactly how to do this?
20:08Three to four years.
20:09Three to four years.
20:11Thomas seems to have rediscovered a driving force.
20:15He seems to be more mature.
20:17How lovely that he is finding his feet.
20:20It's just lovely to be around him at the moment.
20:23You are doing a good job.
20:25I might get into carpet making at home.
20:32Just 19 kilometres north.
20:36Feeling any better?
20:39Brian and Melvin are closing in on the blue city.
20:42Still a bit of stomach ache.
20:44I'm more concerned with getting on to the next part of the journey.
20:50Landscapes change to green, fields, trees.
20:54It is flat.
20:57A bit like Lincolnshire in the sun.
21:03190 kilometres to the east.
21:07This cow's on a mission.
21:09Look at all the colours.
21:10It's quite colourful here too.
21:12Elizabeth and Letitia have stopped off in Pushkar,
21:15one of India's oldest towns.
21:22Tomorrow, we want to go to Jodhpur.
21:25I will taxi like Moshima, 4,500.
21:284,500.
21:30Can we do like 3,500?
21:32No, because this is 440 kilometres.
21:353,800 and we can shake hands.
21:38Ah, lovely.
21:40You're bargaining more than India.
21:44OK, bye-bye.
21:49Securing a direct transfer tomorrow.
21:52Look at that lake.
21:55You can also just see the mountains over back too.
21:57Yeah.
21:59Provides them with an opportunity to explore Pushkar's sacred lake.
22:03I think they might have to take our shoes off here.
22:05Gosh, I haven't even painted my toenails.
22:07It is said it was formed by Lord Brahma,
22:10the Hindu god of creation.
22:12During a battle, petals from a lotus flower fell from his hand
22:17and as they touched the ground, holy water rose up.
22:21It's not holy water.
22:22The Burma fish temple, one temple.
22:25Every day, religious ceremonies are held on the banks of the lake,
22:30including puja rituals.
22:32A chance to honour family and loved ones
22:36by making offerings to deities and ancestors.
22:39Look out.
22:43To hand here.
22:45Om.
22:46Om.
22:47Namo.
22:48Siwa Borg.
22:50Grandfather Puja.
22:51Grandmother Puja.
22:52Grandmother Puja.
22:53Grandmother Puja.
22:54Grandmother Puja.
22:55Grandfamily Puja.
22:56Grandfamily Puja.
22:57What's your name?
22:58Letitia.
22:59My mother.
23:00My mother.
23:01My father.
23:02My father.
23:03My sister.
23:04My sister.
23:05My brother.
23:06It was nice to share a little spiritual moment.
23:09It gave me time to reflect about my family.
23:13I give happiness.
23:14I do.
23:15Happiness.
23:16Happiness.
23:17Charity.
23:18Charity.
23:19Health.
23:20Health.
23:22My sister.
23:23She tries to talk about emotions, which is not my specialty.
23:27And I don't like it at all.
23:29I don't like it at all.
23:33A lot of things are unsaid.
23:35On my part, anyway.
23:38Namaste.
23:46How did you find the ceremony?
23:48It definitely made me reflect on family, I feel.
23:51And I am actually very grateful.
23:53I think we were always kind of there for each other.
23:55Yeah, I feel like now, but I feel like there was a moment
24:00where support wasn't present, really.
24:05When we lost the family house.
24:08I just remember being in a car, driving somewhere,
24:10seeing if we can stay there.
24:12We just had either one or two bags.
24:16And had to part with a lot of stuff.
24:20Yeah, I remember feeling so bad how sudden the move was for you.
24:26I had some kind of inkling there was something going on.
24:32I didn't think it was going to be losing the house.
24:35But in 2008, with the whole economic crisis,
24:40my dad went out of work, in construction.
24:44In 2012, we had to pack our things and see where we were going to go, basically.
24:53I just felt ashamed about it and embarrassed.
24:57Yeah, I think that's what I feel, like, bad about.
25:02I kind of ran away.
25:04I didn't experience the hardest times that you guys felt.
25:06They went to temporary accommodation.
25:12I was already over 18, so they weren't going to, you know, house me.
25:17So I went to Italy.
25:20I was only, like, 14.
25:23So I felt like I was just going through it by myself, really.
25:26I definitely needed someone to talk to.
25:30For me, it felt like he just suddenly left.
25:33Mm.
25:35It was hard for me to hear.
25:36I didn't really have anybody to talk to.
25:39My reaction to hearing that is guilt.
25:42But I kind of just tried to do, like, what I could at that time.
25:48Was that your decision to leave?
25:51Well, I felt like there was no space for me anymore.
25:55My space in England wasn't, yeah, there anymore.
25:59And, yeah, I didn't really know how you felt anyway, you know?
26:04Feeling like you didn't have a place when you came back.
26:06Mm.
26:07Oh, this is probably the most I've actually...
26:13..anything.
26:15My insides, I'm trying.
26:18I feel so good talking about this.
26:21So good.
26:24I've opened up emotionally today, I think, more than ever.
26:28Some weight has been lifted off my shoulders,
26:31and I do feel a lot lighter, I do feel, you know...
26:34..I'm glad we are talking about it, and it's overdue, really.
26:41You know?
26:44We are getting past the hard bit.
26:47I feel like it'll be one of many conversations we'll probably have,
26:51you know?
26:52You know?
26:54Ooh!
27:16As three teams continue to head south through Rajasthan...
27:20Let's get on our way.
27:22Oh!
27:24..Carline and Tom are the first to cross into Gujarat.
27:27I think I've worked out my single favourite thing to do in India.
27:30What's that?
27:31Wave at people.
27:33..making a connection in Ahmedabad.
27:36We've seen an experience, possibly with some work as well,
27:41at a desert lodge.
27:43Neither of us have ever been to a proper desert.
27:46Ooh, what's that in New York?
27:49What?
27:50Ooh!
27:51Ooh!
27:52Ooh!
27:53Ooh!
27:54Ooh!
27:56Ooh!
27:58Ooh!
28:00Don't worry.
28:02And he just got out and had a little prayer,
28:05and then got back in and went back on our way.
28:08I mean, you've got to respect it.
28:10Yeah, I do, but I've never seen it.
28:11Yeah, yeah, it's amazing.
28:13I like that.
28:19And 650 kilometres behind...
28:22I think today's aim is to get to Udaipur by bus or train,
28:29but that was faster.
28:31Finn and Seanid have reached Rajasthan's capital,
28:35the pink city of Jaipur.
28:37We need to go to Udaipur.
28:3910.30.
28:41..and are on the hunt for another long-distance bus
28:43to propel them forward.
28:45Double sleeper?
28:46Erm, cheapest one.
28:47When does it arrive?
28:485.30pm.
28:49Two tickets, yeah?
28:511800 to double sleeper.
28:521800, perfect.
28:54We've literally arrived, and we're leaving.
29:02That one, if you'd like.
29:03I hope she'll like it.
29:05Little pre-bus cake...
29:08..date.
29:10Oh, my gosh, cake.
29:12Thanks.
29:15I've been cake-deprived.
29:19I love cake for breakfast.
29:22We nearly scuffed it all down already.
29:28You good?
29:29Wow, this cake's work.
29:30This is a magic cake.
29:31Honestly, it is, isn't it?
29:35Oh, Scott, are you OK?
29:41There's been many points where I've thought I could not handle India.
29:45It is already a big thing for me to just even still be here.
29:49I think if we were able to catch up with three more teams now,
29:53it would be surprising for a lot of people.
29:56Whilst the young couple refuel...
29:59Yum.
30:01..two teams have made it to the largest desert in India.
30:05The Thar.
30:08Crikey, some of them are big, aren't they?
30:10Absolutely, uh, ideal.
30:12I mean, the view now is absolutely beautiful.
30:16It's just beautiful.
30:18Whoa!
30:20Stretching for 200,000 square kilometres across the subcontinent...
30:23Look.
30:38Thomas, this is amazing.
30:40..it's a haven for biodiversity,
30:42including 141 species of bird...
30:46..and human settlements dating back tens of thousands of years.
30:53Today, with over 16 million inhabitants,
30:57it's the most densely populated desert in the world.
31:00Oh, I can see one, yeah. Yeah, I got them, there.
31:04Oh, I got them! Yeah, I got them.
31:06Amazing place.
31:08They're gorgeous animals.
31:10Oh, Thomas, that is lovely, actually, to see that in that setting.
31:14It's so silent.
31:16Within the desert, a salt marsh,
31:20known as the Little Ran of Kutch,
31:23home to the critically endangered Indian wild ass.
31:26How many do they think are left?
31:31About 3,000 animals.
31:33Is that true? Yeah.
31:35But you will not see this animal anywhere in the world.
31:40They can go over 70 kilometres an hour.
31:44Oh, my God!
31:46Extremely fast. Much faster than a horse.
31:49Yes!
31:53A special moment. Magical.
31:56I think they're just truly, truly wild.
31:59And here we are, in their life.
32:02It's just beautiful.
32:11Hello!
32:13Aren't you beautiful?
32:15It's an amazing sight, isn't it?
32:17Hello.
32:19430 kilometres north of them, in the desert village of Rajpura.
32:26Well, you don't get it any fresher than that, mate, do you?
32:30Brian and Melvin are on hand at a camel dairy farm.
32:34Mmm.
32:37Oh, that's lovely!
32:42Pull, squeeze, pull, squeeze, yeah? Pull, squeeze.
32:45Squeeze, pull.
32:47No, pull, squeeze, I think.
32:51I think you're getting me, Mel.
32:52I'm not.
32:53I'm getting some in the pond.
32:54I'm not doing it as well as the other gentlemen, but getting some.
32:58The region is home to a community of rikas.
33:01Nomadic herders who have been shepherding camels for centuries.
33:05A duty believed to have been assigned to them by the Hindu god, Lord Shiva.
33:10I'll show you how to do it properly.
33:12Go on, then.
33:13Not as easy as it looks, isn't it?
33:14Ah, it's easy.
33:15Look at this.
33:17Come on, come on.
33:19There you go, look.
33:20This is technique.
33:22I got twice as much as you did.
33:23Well, I don't think you did.
33:28That's a big term.
33:30Thank you, my friend.
33:33That's good.
33:35That's good.
33:38These camel herders, they are hard to keep up with.
33:41Some of them are probably older than us.
33:43They do look well-weathered.
33:44They're very fit.
33:46It's a very simplistic life, isn't it?
33:49However, they all have mobile phones.
33:51I noticed that.
33:53We need to catch him up, Mel.
33:55I know.
33:56We're coming.
33:57Coming.
33:59With a flock of 150 camels, each with unique footprints,
34:04the rikas can recognise their own animals
34:06from just the marks left in the sand.
34:09Yeah, brother.
34:11Come on.
34:12Do you find me they listen to you, brother?
34:13Well, they're moving, aren't they?
34:15Come on, then.
34:17I've been poorly, and doing the race when you're ill is even tougher.
34:23You have to keep on going.
34:25Come on.
34:27This adventure has been the most uncomfortable adventure of my life.
34:32But it has been the most rewarding in that I'm still here
34:39and I'm still talking about it.
34:41Because many a times I want to give up and go home, but I haven't.
34:47Right, guys, we're moving.
34:50Come on.
34:51Come on.
34:53Come on, girls.
34:58When we were kids, we did promise ourselves an invention.
35:01Yeah, and it's probably happened a little bit later than we anticipated.
35:05But just because you're a little bit older,
35:07it doesn't mean you can't do these sort of things.
35:10I'm on statins.
35:11I take something from a prostate.
35:14But it's what it is, isn't it?
35:16I'm still here.
35:17Look what I've got to enjoy.
35:20Yo!
35:21Click, click, click, click, click.
35:24Go for it, guys.
35:26It'll be a lot easier to sit on one.
35:29Growing old, it does worry me.
35:32When I look in the mirror and I look at myself,
35:34I don't actually recognise me.
35:37I still think I'm 14, 15, 16.
35:40I still think I've got a full head of hair.
35:45There you go.
35:46Right, that's how you do it.
35:48Don't leave none behind.
35:49Good job.
36:01I think there might be the odd one or two adventures
36:03that Merv and I will do again.
36:06You know, I'm actually thinking that I'd want to share
36:09a nursing home with my brother.
36:12It'd probably cause a bit of mayhem.
36:15Yeah, we'd probably do silly things
36:18because we could get away with it.
36:20Ha!
36:21Ha!
36:22Ha!
36:23Ha!
36:24Ha!
36:25Ha!
36:26Ha!
36:27Ha!
36:28Ha!
36:29Ha!
36:30Ha!
36:32We're going that way.
36:33That way.
36:34That way.
36:35OK, great.
36:36Thank you very much.
36:37So long.
36:39Thank you all.
36:40Thank you all.
36:41Thank you all.
36:42Bye, camels!
36:44Journey starts all over again.
36:45It does.
36:47We know that other teams are pretty close to us.
36:50Melvin and I aren't runners, so we need to try and maintain
36:54touching distance of everyone.
36:56As Brian and Melvin resume their journey...
37:00Wraithing across the world.
37:03..150 kilometres from the brothers,
37:05Elizabeth and Leticia are continuing their march south.
37:09Started in China.
37:12I definitely feel like there's a change.
37:14There's like a shift and I feel like we're very much more open
37:18and it's just easier just travelling, actually, together.
37:22We've come a long way.
37:24I'm loving it.
37:34Having left Jaipur...
37:35I want a shower to brush my teeth.
37:39Finn and Sean Ed are making swift progress
37:41by taking the third long-distance bus in two days,
37:45aiming for Udaipur, the white city.
37:50I'm feeling absolutely disgusting.
37:53I feel so salty.
37:54Same.
37:55I changed my underwear.
37:57Be honest.
38:00Yesterday, before the bus.
38:02Three days ago.
38:03The whole outfit, I'm wearing it for three days.
38:05Yeah.
38:06Not my underwear.
38:08Not that gross.
38:09I don't think we could have done it any quicker.
38:15Two 10-hour buses in 24 hours.
38:18We've just been go, go, go.
38:20I think we're very tired.
38:22We've seen a homestay.
38:24It's on the way.
38:25Got to work for a reduced rate at the ranch.
38:29Ready, then, to restart tomorrow
38:32and do the final push towards checkpoint.
38:36Still in the little ran of Kutch.
38:42I want to take my feet off.
38:45Oh, nice.
38:47Caroline and Tom.
38:49It's absolutely just like another planet.
38:53Once part of the Arabian Sea,
38:55until it became isolated following a series of earthquakes,
38:59it is now one of the largest salt deserts in the world.
39:03Every year, it floods with the monsoon
39:09before drying out to leave an expanse of salty, cracked earth.
39:14There is families who are producing saltier.
39:18OK.
39:19In return for discounted accommodation,
39:22Caroline and Tom are kept busy.
39:24The whole pan needs to be done.
39:26What?
39:27Yes.
39:28Yes.
39:33So could you not have a machine that does it?
39:35Machinery kills labour.
39:37People need jobs.
39:40The local Agaria people use a process of compressing the ground
39:44to minimise water and release the salt.
39:47They say you do it very well.
39:50Can he give a hundred kilos of salt to your son and keep you, please?
39:59That's the second marriage proposal I've had since I've been out here.
40:04It has a therapeutic quality about it.
40:06I'm just in my own little world here yet in the most enormous expanse
40:10and it just brings you back to how unimportant we really are.
40:13Nature will win every time.
40:18I'm feeling conflicted because, on one hand,
40:21I'm worried that we're taking a long time to get to the checkpoints
40:24and, on the other hand, I'm really enjoying what rural India is showing us.
40:29I'm slowly falling in love with it.
40:32It's just as important that you enjoy the journey as much as you enjoy the destination.
40:41I'm enjoying the experiences enormously
40:44and I'm allowing myself to enjoy them more than I thought I would.
40:48I think I'm being quite different from the person I am at home,
40:52more emotional, generally a lot happier,
40:55easy-going, which isn't like me at all.
40:58Does it make you question your competitive side?
41:01In an answer, no.
41:03I'm afraid my competitive side is still at the fore.
41:05Yeah.
41:06So I actually want to combine the two.
41:08I would have thought by this point you were probably pulling your own hair out.
41:11Wanting to race.
41:12Yeah, yeah.
41:13I would be a really selfish person to not want to do this with you.
41:17Yes, yeah, of course.
41:18Because these are just the most special memories we're making.
41:21But then, equally, I'd be selfish to try and take away your competitive side
41:25because that's what makes you tick.
41:27Hey, we're finding a balance.
41:29Thomas, don't fall over.
41:30I'll start slow first.
41:32HE LAUGHS
41:33HE LAUGHS
41:35HE LAUGHS
41:37HE LAUGHS
41:39Five kilometers outside of Udaipur.
42:00It's hard work.
42:02Finn and Sean Ed are working at Krishna Ranch
42:05as make way towards last night's accommodation.
42:08Steal some, quick. Take some. Quick.
42:12Oh, shit.
42:13These are the times where I'm like, wow,
42:16I'm really, really grateful for being in India, really.
42:18Although we have just prioritised speed,
42:23I'm finding this leg very, very enjoyable.
42:25I'm absolutely loving it.
42:27Just an absolutely beautiful place.
42:29I genuinely would not want to be anywhere else right now.
42:31There's chipmunks, there's horses, there's cows,
42:34there's chickens just running around, there's birds.
42:36There's some food.
42:39Come on then, heading.
42:40Good girl.
42:42Please be good.
42:43Oh, shit, you're strong.
42:45Oh, shit.
42:46It's been very important for me to have Finn with me in India
42:53because he manages to keep things a bit more positive
42:56and keep the boat floating, really.
42:59He's the most resilient person I know.
43:01I don't think he understands, like,
43:03how much he has actually gone through.
43:07Hello.
43:07There are bits in India where I do find it hard,
43:16but I think Kishorena finds it hard.
43:18I just try and stay positive,
43:20and I do definitely think I'm a little bit more resilient.
43:23I think just growing up, for me,
43:25I've realised, like,
43:27I mean, life isn't perfect and things happen.
43:29When I was 11,
43:34I would think I was on the sofa.
43:35I just wasn't really moving.
43:37My mum was like, oh, OK, something's wrong.
43:40She just thought, right, I'm taking her to the doctors.
43:44And it's good that she did.
43:45Yeah, good that she did.
43:48It was top one diabetes.
43:50It was a week in intensive care,
43:53then it was a week in just children's ward.
43:59Quite a lot for 11, I think.
44:01Being diabetic, there's a lot of complications
44:04that can come with it, you know, in your eyes.
44:06And I think my eyes are already going a little bit.
44:10Obviously, only being 18,
44:12it's not something you really want to think about, I don't think.
44:18But it's something you've got to think about.
44:23About two years after, I had a tumour in my head.
44:28I had surgery then in my head
44:30because they found out what it was.
44:31But that was horrific.
44:33I've been rushed up to a bigger hospital.
44:35This is not good.
44:37Obviously, you think you're going to die.
44:40I'm fine now.
44:41Look, this is the cutest little horse ever.
44:58Now, I don't take anything for granted.
45:05And this race is hard,
45:06but I'm just trying to enjoy it, really.
45:08And so far, I am, because it is something
45:09I look back to and think I'm so proud that I did that.
45:16Which I am.
45:19And someone else agrees.
45:22Goodbye.
45:23Bye-bye.
45:30This is your ticket.
45:31Oh, wow.
45:32To Rajkot.
45:33I've had such a good time.
45:35And not only that,
45:35but we've also sorted our onwards travel.
45:383,500.
45:39You can count it as well.
45:40Our bus is booked for 10 o'clock.
45:42One day.
45:42We'll do the life.
45:43Thank you, bye.
45:44We've got to sleep.
45:45Hopefully, we'll just sleep all night,
45:47wake up and be in Rajkot.
45:50Yeah.
45:50That's the plan.
45:51As Finn and Seanad get back on the road,
45:56two teams are gaining ground.
46:01It's really important that we try and get there today,
46:03because I picked the third.
46:05Looking on the map,
46:06it is another 300 kilometres.
46:10Making a beeline for the checkpoint.
46:13I'm going to look finally on the way to the checkpoint,
46:15because I feel like it was a long time coming.
46:18This is where, you know, we need to be.
46:20Go, go, go.
46:21This is our longest journey.
46:25How long is it?
46:2615 to 16 hours.
46:30At their homestay in the rural village of Zainabad...
46:33How far away is Sassangir from here?
46:35300 kilometres, I think.
46:37Caroline and Tom weigh up their next move.
46:40Where's the closest place that we could get to tonight?
46:43To Junagod.
46:45Let's just get a taxi there now.
46:46If you can help us, that would be great.
46:48Yeah, this is India.
46:49Anything can happen.
46:50Absolutely anything.
46:52I am a little bit concerned that our position might have dropped.
46:55We've idled for quite a few hours.
46:57And just think at the back of my mind, we're standing still.
47:00And I think the other teams might be moving on and overtaking us.
47:04I do actually still need to race.
47:07Vehicle arrives in 10, 15 minutes.
47:09Yeah.
47:09And it is about 7,200 rupees.
47:13Obviously a bit expensive for us, but is there a bus available?
47:17There is one directly to Junagod.
47:18Do you know what time it gets in?
47:20Six, seven hours.
47:22You don't know roughly how much the bus is?
47:24Maximum 150 rupees.
47:26Oh, we're such a time now.
47:28It's up to you.
47:29What do you want to do?
47:29We have both options available.
47:33Back at you.
47:35I've told you, I'd rather get a taxi, I think.
47:37But I need your opinion.
47:38So I don't mind?
47:39That's not good enough.
47:40I'm sorry.
47:40You need to be able to make a decision.
47:42We do have the budget.
47:43Well, go with it then.
47:44If that's what you want, just go with that.
47:45OK.
47:47It's all just about saving time.
47:49But when I ask Mum, she puts all the pressure on me.
47:52Mum's saying she's feeling all liberated.
47:54She needs to be able to make a decision,
47:56because that's part of racing.
47:59It's a lot of money to spend, but it might well be worth it.
48:02But I really don't want to take responsibility,
48:05and I will try my hardest not to say,
48:07I told you so, if it all goes wrong.
48:12We'll see you.
48:13Thank you so much.
48:15One day we'll go to Weatherspoons together.
48:17Oh, I love it.
48:33Ready?
48:34Yeah.
48:39All four teams have made it to Gujarat.
48:42Platform 10.
48:44That's a gift.
48:46As Brian and Melvin take a 5am bus
48:48for the final 40 kilometres to checkpoint...
48:52There's nobody else on the bus from the race,
48:54so it could be good news.
48:57The adrenaline's building, isn't it?
49:00How much?
49:01How much?
49:022,500.
49:03We need to...
49:04Ooh!
49:05We're in a race.
49:06We need to...
49:07Vamos!
49:07Caroline and Tom opt for another private taxi.
49:11This car.
49:12Lovely.
49:13Having arrived overnight from Jodhpur...
49:16One way.
49:17From here, Sasangir and stop.
49:194,500.
49:21Yeah, yeah.
49:21Elizabeth and Leticia secure their final transfer.
49:25How much would it be to get a Sasangir?
49:27Thank you very much.
49:30Whilst Finn and Seanet continue to keep their pace...
49:33Very expensive.
49:34Still exorcional, but...
49:35Very expensive, but we need to save as much time as we can.
49:38My head's on the roof.
49:41After Sasangir.
49:43I'd be pretty gutted to find out that we haven't gamed any time.
49:46If we haven't, it's probably game over.
49:49My heart's going like, bum-bum, bum-bum, bum-bum.
49:52This is when the nerve starts kicking.
49:54I still can't help feeling we've dropped a couple of places.
50:00We go fast, fast, fast.
50:03Yeah.
50:04I'm going to be in one line.
50:05Lion.
50:07I am hoping we're not going to be running alongside a lion.
50:12That will make us run to the table.
50:13I'm going to be short.
50:14Sitting on the boundary to Geyer National Park,
50:25the village is home to the Maldari and Sidi communities,
50:29who live side-by-side with free-roaming lions,
50:33crocodiles and hyenas.
50:36Oh, wow.
50:40This could be actually pretty bloody cool.
50:50Hold it.
50:52My friend, thank you so much.
50:55Here we go.
51:01Find the main road and travel one kilometre by foot.
51:05Or by Chak-do.
51:08Chak-do.
51:10Chick-a-do.
51:12To the Hiran River Bridge.
51:14We have to find the main road.
51:21It's either that way or that way.
51:23We can either go left, main road, left, left.
51:27Left or right?
51:28Keep looking, Thomas.
51:30It's a mental.
51:32Oh, gosh.
51:33Oh, there's the main road.
51:34The main road there.
51:34Lovely.
51:34Let's go straight.
51:35What's it called?
51:36A Chak-do.
51:38Chak-do?
51:39Chak-do?
51:40Chak-do?
51:40Chak-do?
51:41Oh, man, this might be a Chak-do, whatever it's called.
51:44Must be another night for a wickshaw.
51:46Is this a Chak-do?
51:48Is this a Chak-do?
51:50Are you a Chak-do?
51:52Oogilgi, yes.
51:53Is this this?
51:54What, this is?
51:54Yes.
51:54Do you want to give it a go?
51:56All right.
51:56It's going to be quicker than walking.
51:58Oh, I thought chip-chooks weren't very secure.
52:00But this is something else.
52:01Haran River Bridge.
52:02How much?
52:0350.
52:04Ah, good.
52:0540.
52:06We're in a race.
52:06Get on.
52:07Thank you, 40.
52:08I guess so.
52:08Just climbing.
52:09Take the bag off first.
52:10I can't.
52:13Now we know what a Chak-do is.
52:14No, it's a cross between a Harley-Davidson and a track.
52:20Woo!
52:21Chak-a-doo, chak-a-doo, chak-a-doo, go, go, go, chak-a-doo, chak-a-doo, go, go, go.
52:25This is awesome.
52:27We're in a Chak-to.
52:28In the island country.
52:31This is so much fun.
52:32Heed and Bridge.
52:34Watch out for wildlife.
52:35To the bridge, please, yeah.
52:41Look for crocodiles as you go over the river.
52:51Continue on foot across the bridge.
52:53And find the Chak-1 hotel.
52:54The Furn Gear Forest Resort.
52:57Okay.
53:00Ready?
53:01Go.
53:02Let's go.
53:05Look, oh, Kevin Lyons crossing.
53:07So cool.
53:08I wonder if there's crocodiles in the lake.
53:13I'm going to wet bum sitting in that Chak-a-bang.
53:15Mine's a bit damp.
53:16Oh, beautiful.
53:17Now, look at this, Your Honor.
53:18It won't be far, Mel.
53:20Thomas, what?
53:24Okay, okay, okay.
53:26Oh, gosh.
53:28I can see it on the left, Mel.
53:31Furn Gear Forest Resort.
53:32Oh, Mum, we're nearly there.
53:34I've got a funny feeling we're going to be bloody last, you know.
53:37Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye.
53:43Morning.
53:44Morning.
53:44Morning.
53:45Morning.
53:45Yeah.
53:47Kunta, as you've successfully reached your six checkpoint,
53:49please sign in overleaf.
53:54I don't believe that.
53:56Have we done that?
53:57I don't know.
53:58I think...
53:59I don't know how we've done that.
54:02Hold on, mate.
54:02We don't.
54:03I don't.
54:04So, first place.
54:05Didn't expect it.
54:06Delighted that we've come in first.
54:08That's the third time I think we've been first.
54:10We figured we wanted to keep pace with Tom and Caroline.
54:14And we've actually leaped from them, which is great.
54:17Oh, man.
54:19Hello.
54:20Okay.
54:20Ready?
54:21Oh, my God, I'm shaking.
54:24But two hours.
54:24Oh, my God, it's better.
54:26Oh, my God.
54:27It's so much better than I thought.
54:29We've only dropped two hours, and that is a big relief to us
54:32because we had a fantastic leg with wonderful experiences.
54:36That's a good sigh of relief.
54:37It's nice to know that we had amazing experiences
54:40without sacrificing too much, and it's all paid off.
54:44Hello.
54:46Namaskar.
54:46Welcome to the Puget Forest Resort.
54:48Ready?
54:49Ready?
54:50Oh!
54:51Oh!
54:52Good?
54:53Oh, that's good.
54:54That's good.
54:55That's good.
54:56That's good.
54:57Oh, wow.
54:58Feeling great.
54:59Got two legs to go so we can catch up.
55:00Yeah, yeah.
55:01Because we're actually closer.
55:02Five hours from Ryan and Melvin.
55:03Wow.
55:04That's crazy.
55:05Let's go.
55:06She's running.
55:07There it is.
55:08Oh, no.
55:09Oh, no.
55:10Oh, no.
55:11Very nervous to open this pack.
55:13Oh, wow.
55:14Oh, hello.
55:15Namaste.
55:16Namaskar.
55:17Are you ready?
55:18Yeah.
55:19Oh, please.
55:20Congratulations.
55:21Oh, wow.
55:22Oh, wow.
55:23Oh, wow.
55:24Oh, wow.
55:25Oh, wow.
55:26Oh, wow.
55:27Oh, hello.
55:28Namaste.
55:29Namaskar.
55:30Oh, wow.
55:31Oh, wow.
55:32Oh, wow.
55:33Oh, wow.
55:34Oh, wow.
55:35Oh, wow.
55:36Oh, wow.
55:37Congratulations.
55:38You've successfully reached your sixth checkpoint.
55:40Please sign in overleaf.
55:46Oh, my gosh.
55:47Oh, wow.
55:48We're an hour behind.
55:49Oh.
55:50Oh, my God.
55:52Ah!
55:53Well done.
55:54Well done.
55:55How have we done that?
55:56Don't think I've ever been that excited to be last,
55:58because we've caught up the time.
56:00Oh, that's amazing.
56:01That's absolutely amazing.
56:02We've caught up with Tom and Caroline,
56:04who were first by 26 hours.
56:06We've caught up 26 hours.
56:07Only six hours from first.
56:08That's, like, easily doable now for the next leg to come first or second.
56:13That one leg has saved us.
56:15It's going to be a closer now, definitely.
56:17For the first time since leaving the Great Wall of China,
56:21all teams are within seven hours of each other
56:24as they head into the penultimate leg.
56:27But whilst the time gap tightens, the budget divide grows,
56:31as Finn and Sean Ed trail behind,
56:34with only 21% of their funds remaining.
56:37Wow.
56:38So, if we can do what we just did, then, next leg.
56:40Do it again.
56:41And again.
56:42And then we win.
56:43Winners!
56:44So, I can't scrabble with your slots.
56:48Oh, well.
56:49Fuck it.
56:50Let's go.
56:51This is a totally different side to Ingrid.
56:53So different.
56:54The closer to the finale, the more competitive I'm getting.
56:57Like, there's no room for error.
56:59No!
57:00This race has pulled something out of it.
57:03Oh!
57:04Oh!
57:05I do just want to see more of the world.
57:07I feel like any minute I'm going to get run out of my motorbike.
57:10Run out of my motorbike.
57:11Come in, come in, come in, come in, come in.
57:13God, it's massive.
57:14The race is fun.
57:16All to play for.
57:17It's a bit risky.
57:18It's a bit spicy.
57:19It's Brian and Melvin.
57:35Todayoop to 1978.
57:40Good night.
57:41H ran away from the coffin.
57:42Until i universities.
57:45안 icecziejars at San Diego.
57:47Together呀.
57:49It's just a bit spicy.
57:50The rebound digitization process.
57:51Heaven is the seventh step further.
57:53Every time in tune.
57:54нал the äniller religion.
57:55Otherwise, be on the throne list.
57:56Tänk if it's at 12 o'clock now.
57:57Noxus moves up crazy, not the asccendo.
57:59All to the misery part.
58:00And get eaten from here.
