00:00Last autumn, five pairs of ordinary Brits embarked on a 14,000 kilometer race of a lifetime.
00:12From the Great Wall of China to the southern tip of India.
00:23This is the car before the storm.
00:26Put me hair off, I don't think.
00:29It's like an onslaught of the senses.
00:32Chick-a-doo, chick-a-doo, chick-a-doo, go, go, go!
00:36They travelled across three countries at ground level.
00:40This is awesome.
00:42Look, it's a sleeping bloody car.
00:44The old fella loves his bloody home.
00:47These are the most special memories we're making.
00:51This is the best view that I've ever had working.
00:54Oh, I want one.
00:56You can't.
00:57Through a multitude of different landscapes...
01:00Oh!
01:02We won't ever forget this.
01:04It will be a special place for us.
01:06Brother.
01:07Oh!
01:09Brother!
01:10It looks quite like a fairy tale.
01:12He's not going to bottle it.
01:13He's not a bottle.
01:14Oh, shit!
01:16But only one team could win.
01:19Oh!
01:20And claim the prize of £20,000.
01:27And now, for the first time since crossing the finish line,
01:31they all sit down together.
01:33We did tell a few porcupines.
01:35No, we never.
01:37Taking the chance to share their ultimate highs...
01:40It's like going back to being a kid again, but you're allowed to do it.
01:44And away!
01:47This experience is just making me feel so alive.
01:51Oh!
01:52We got each other, it's all right.
01:54And agonising lows.
01:56I'm literally fresh out of school, so we've gone from that to luck now.
02:00It's scary and intimidating.
02:02They share unseen moments.
02:03Oh, my God!
02:05It's the Himalayas.
02:07Watch your head.
02:09Oh!
02:10Oh, my God, I just told you.
02:12In my head, I was just thinking, please don't say that.
02:16And reveal secrets from behind the scenes.
02:19One of the camera was literally leaning out the back of one of the vehicles,
02:23trying to film it.
02:24It's constantly filming, packing, moving, filming, packing, moving.
02:28As they look back...
02:29Keep coming, Mel.
02:30Quick, quick, quick, quick, quick.
02:32...at their race across the world.
02:35You like tea?
02:36Cheers.
02:37Come on.
02:50Coming home to Wales.
02:51Ready?
02:52Come here.
02:53Was...
02:54Bit of a shock to the system.
02:56I miss everything about racing.
02:57The suspense of not knowing where you're going to go next.
03:00It was an unbelievable experience.
03:03We're on our way to the council tip.
03:07This is just something typically...
03:09Typically.
03:10Yeah.
03:11We will do together.
03:12Yeah.
03:13Which is actually lovely, because that's when we don't have our phones, just like on race.
03:18And we chat to each other.
03:20And we chat about anything and everything.
03:22Go on.
03:23Go on.
03:24Go on.
03:25Get it.
03:26Here is Yin doing some work in her house.
03:28Well done, muscles.
03:29This is Yin's house.
03:31And we both have our matching fleeces on.
03:35Since coming back from race, we still see each other a lot.
03:38You know, Yin's only just finally moved out.
03:41I've been doing sort of like DIY, making it feel a little bit more like my own.
03:45I'm feeling happier about being here.
03:47Hello.
03:49We are at the gym.
03:51You know, we thought, what a great way to bond.
03:54Here I am in Bequy, which is a Caribbean island.
04:04Most days I think about the race.
04:06The marvellous, most fantastic adventure that anyone can ever think of.
04:11I was really proud of Bri.
04:13I'm proud of myself for actually doing it as well.
04:15You get to a certain age and you think, am I still capable of doing this sort of thing?
04:20And yeah, I was and I did and I'd do it again.
04:23Up the oldies.
04:28Having landed back in the UK over six months ago,
04:31all five teams are meeting up for the first time since the race.
04:36I think we're here, Mel, aren't we?
04:38Looks a bit posh, mate, doesn't it?
04:39Automatic nose, don't walk into it.
04:42Brothers Brian and Melvin.
04:44Cheers, mate.
04:45Cheers.
04:46Who's next, then, you reckon?
04:48Excited to see everyone?
04:49Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing my pensioner friends, Brian and Melvin.
04:52Obviously excited to see everyone.
04:54Yeah.
04:55Welsh teenage couple Finn and Sean Ed.
04:58Hello.
04:59Hello, guys, how are you?
05:00Hi.
05:01Looking good?
05:02Yeah, and so are you.
05:04Wow, look at this.
05:06From Worthing, Elizabeth and younger sister Letitia.
05:10Hello.
05:11Hello.
05:12Girls.
05:13Hello, girls.
05:14How are you?
05:15Oh, really good to see you.
05:17I'm not sure of the quality of the champagne.
05:20Only one person will say that.
05:23Are you back into the land of the living now?
05:25Back to work.
05:26Yeah, back to work.
05:27Back to work.
05:28We've been to Australia.
05:29Good fun?
05:30Very good.
05:31It was basically inspired by the race.
05:35Before, we were a bit scared to take that leap.
05:39It was amazing.
05:40Thankfully, no budget.
05:41Otherwise, we'd been out first week.
05:43We'd been gone.
05:44Fantastic.
05:45It'd be interesting to see the others.
05:48We haven't seen them, well, since right at the start.
05:50I hope they all had a really good time.
05:52No, exactly.
05:53From Kent.
05:56Yin and ex-husband, Gaz.
05:58I'm next.
06:00And finally, from Suffolk.
06:03I wish we were going there and we were starting it all again.
06:05Really, me too, actually.
06:09Mother and son, Caroline and Tom.
06:12Caroline, you look really well.
06:14Oh, my God.
06:15Oh, my God.
06:16Oh, my God.
06:17Oh, my God.
06:18Oh, my God.
06:19Oh, my God.
06:20Obviously, we don't know because we never made it to the end.
06:22So, who actually won out of you?
06:23Who do you think won?
06:24Come on.
06:25I think one of the young'uns.
06:27But I would have liked you guys.
06:28Yeah, we would have liked you guys.
06:29I would have really liked you guys to have won, honestly.
06:32After the count of three, the people that won took her two steps forward.
06:36One, two, three.
06:39Well done.
06:40Well done.
06:41Well done.
06:42Well done.
06:43Well done.
06:44Are you good?
06:45Oh, yeah.
06:46Cheers, guys.
06:47Cheers, guys.
06:48Cheers, guys.
06:49Cheers.
06:50Cheers.
06:51Cheers.
06:52Cheers.
06:53Cheers.
06:54Cheers.
06:55Cheers.
06:56Cheers.
06:57Now bound together by the experience, the five teams met as strangers.
07:03Pleased to meet you.
07:04Nice to meet you.
07:05How you too?
07:06About to embark on a race through the unknown.
07:09Standing at the start line, in the shadows of the Great Wall of China,
07:22it was one of the most challenging launches to date.
07:27Yin and Gaz came up first, didn't you?
07:29And you looked so determined.
07:31And I was like, uh-oh, what have we done?
07:34You said something like, I'm Gaz, Yin, and we're determined to win.
07:39Something like that.
07:40You're all right.
07:41Yeah.
07:42I'm off guard.
07:43How confident are you on winning?
07:45Yeah, very confident.
07:46Does it matter?
07:47Yeah, 100%.
07:48Really?
07:49It matters, doesn't it?
07:50100% it matters.
07:51Yeah, definitely.
07:52In my head, I was just thinking, please don't say that.
07:54I don't remember being that competitive, and I'm not that competitive.
07:57I think I was quite nervous, actually, at the start, to be up against you.
08:00Do you have any languages under your bags?
08:02Um...
08:03Go on.
08:04A little bit.
08:05A little bit?
08:06Not a lot.
08:07Of Mandarin?
08:08Yeah.
08:09Do you want to teach us a few words?
08:10Yeah!
08:12Because I understood a little bit of the language,
08:15I felt the pressure, like, I have to, you know, keep us going.
08:18I did not understand 85% of what people were saying, like, completely.
08:23I would literally just stare at them and be like, what are you saying?
08:26All right, here we go, then.
08:29You're very young, you're very young.
08:31You're very old.
08:32Yeah, very old.
08:34Don't underestimate us, we might be the oldest here,
08:37but we've got a bit more experience than you guys.
08:40Just watching.
08:42When I saw Brian and Melvin, you know, on the start line,
08:44and I see Melvin with his suitcase,
08:48I'll be honest, I did think, oh, okay, they won't be too hard to beat.
08:51Where do we go? What do we do?
09:07Nobody said it to be from the Great Wall of China.
09:10That's when it set in reality.
09:11We just started running around like headless chickens.
09:14Wow, that's crazy!
09:19Come on, let's go!
09:23I think nothing can prepare you for thrice.
09:26Language barrier was the main issue.
09:28You have to be so proactive.
09:31Yeah.
09:32I find that quite tough, but that was part of the challenge.
09:34Yeah.
09:36Almost 40 times bigger than the UK,
09:39with more than 300 distinct dialects and languages spoken.
09:43Teams were quickly struck by the scale of China,
09:57discovering the blend of traditional values and quaint towns,
10:02with its ultramodern megacities holding populations of millions.
10:08What a place this is!
10:10You've never heard of these places, though.
10:12Like, I've never heard of Charmen.
10:14Like, if you go on a map and you zoom into Charmen,
10:15it's so small, but you go there and it's a mega city.
10:19You'd get on a bullet train and it'd just be,
10:21at night time, just be dark,
10:22and then you'd come to a big city and it was, like, massive.
10:25And one of the days we actually did three bullet trains
10:27and we did over a thousand kilometres in a day.
10:31Going into China, I really thought that everything was modern.
10:35Modern, modern, modern, modern, modern.
10:38Until the night train, I was in shock.
10:45Oh, it's even hard.
10:47You know when you sit down on something and you're expecting a cushion?
10:50This is going to be interesting.
10:52Yeah, I'm not going to sleep tonight.
10:53It's all right.
10:56The smoking issue was a problem, isn't it?
10:58There's big signs saying no smoking
11:01and people under the signs smoke.
11:06I think I found my seat at 71, but the man's lying all over it.
11:10It's a very different vibe to a bullet train.
11:13It's not as bad as British Rail.
11:15I'd never been on an overnight train.
11:19It was hellish and uncomfortable and tiring,
11:23but I actually enjoyed living through it.
11:26We just managed to have fun.
11:27We enjoyed the little things and just had a good time.
11:30We did have some really incredible, positive experiences
11:33and, you know, those are the moments that really lift you.
11:36Look at that.
11:38Beautiful, beautiful.
11:40This is the real China.
11:41That was picture postcard China, yeah.
11:45I've seen the rice paddies.
11:46It was breathtaking, to be honest.
11:48Oh, wow, look!
11:50Look, look at that.
11:51They look so neat.
11:53I remember just looking around at the scenery
11:55and the mountains were breathtaking.
11:57You were just such a small cog in the whole of nature.
12:01You almost became quite insignificant in a way.
12:03I mean, were you too busy, like, digging under the roof?
12:06I just enjoyed the work.
12:07It was actually quite nice to get out in the fresh air,
12:09put your waders on.
12:10Hence, may leak water, change clothes after digging.
12:14OK.
12:16There's a hole already?
12:17Great!
12:19Oh, man!
12:25Careful, careful!
12:28Yes, Stacey!
12:31I keep falling over.
12:33Former married couple, Yin and Gaz, set off on their journey with the blessing of their daughter, Autumn.
12:42Are you worried that me and your dad will come over as, like, a bit idiotic?
12:46I don't think that's an if, but I think that's a guarantee.
12:49I think you might have a few delirious moments.
12:52Yeah.
12:54I'm really excited for them.
12:56I think, weirdly, it's, like, what they need at this point in their lives.
13:00Both of them need a bit of an adventure.
13:01I'll miss you because, like, I'll have to deal with your dad by myself.
13:06You'll have to miss it.
13:08We're still one big family and it's, like, even though they're not together, I'm beyond proud of them.
13:12We're off!
13:16We're off!
13:20We thought, wouldn't it be amazing to have some sort of legacy for Autumn to see me and you in a slightly different light to actually just being parents.
13:28And she was rooting for us.
13:30We're gonna make a wish?
13:31Wish to win the race.
13:32Yeah.
13:33Okay, let's go.
13:34It feels very gentle, it's very calm. It's got a really lovely feel about it. Peels to my senses.
13:42But their race came to an abrupt standstill when Typhoon Trammy struck Hainan Island, leaving the pair stranded.
13:51I have no words.
13:52It's a limbo.
13:53No words.
13:54I'd pull my hair out if I had any.
13:57We just seemed to, like, encounter an incredible stream of bad luck.
14:01And you could see how choppy the sea was. It's only an hour's ferry ride as well, but then the time get pushed back, pushed back.
14:06We hung around, like, 14 hours just in the ferry terminal.
14:09Oh, wow.
14:10Because there is no other way to get there, it's not like you could hire a speedboat or whatever and get across...
14:15Well, I assume you couldn't.
14:18The delay set them back 44 hours behind the race leaders.
14:23Hello, lady.
14:25Hello.
14:26And for the first time ever, the last team checked in as the first was leaving.
14:30Yay! You made it!
14:32Let's check it out.
14:33Oh.
14:34I thought they were signing in.
14:35Oh, never mind.
14:36Not leaving.
14:37Your heart just sinks, doesn't it?
14:38Yeah.
14:39Basically, you just thought, you know, what more can go wrong?
14:41And calamity struck again with a snap decision.
14:44You can go to Malming.
14:46Malming.
14:47Malming.
14:48Perfect, that's fine.
14:49Perfect.
14:50Perfect.
14:51Well, let's just book it and pray for a miracle.
14:52That sent them 250 kilometres in the wrong direction.
14:56Gods are against us.
14:57It does feel like that, yeah.
14:59Yeah.
15:00He did leave thinking...
15:01All very positive, yeah.
15:02We could catch up.
15:03We were pumped up to kind of go, look, you know, it has been done in the past.
15:06Come on, let's give it our...
15:07I'm trying to find...
15:10...moaming.
15:11Yes.
15:12Oh, shit.
15:13The race gods let us down again, you know.
15:15We threw the dice and it just went horribly wrong again.
15:19Adrift from the rest of the field, it was the end of the road for Yin and Gaz.
15:24We know it wasn't for not trying.
15:27By this stage, your reflection kicks in and I think since leaving race,
15:32I recognised that I was struggling already with what China means to me personally.
15:40My heritage is Chinese and I do identify as a Chinese person.
15:44Where I struggle is my upbringing.
15:47It was in a very traditional household and I didn't leave home on good terms for my parents.
15:52Some of the struggles that probably I went through are quite unique in the sense of,
15:59because I look Chinese, I don't speak Mandarin and I've struggled with my Chinese heritage.
16:08We're looking for bus station or train station.
16:11No, I don't...
16:12When I came back from race, I reconnected with my siblings and recognised that had to be addressed.
16:24The real gift that race gave me was to address that and then move forward with my life.
16:31My partner, who I'd been with for three years, had passed away very suddenly in September 23.
16:38So, one of the reasons for coming on race is to give me that kind of energy to see what's out there.
16:43I want to give you a hug.
16:45And the relief and lightness that I now feel, you know, and I do now feel like one of the biggest things
16:52that I've probably changed about myself is that life is there to be lived.
16:56It was a catalyst.
16:57It was a catalyst to enable me to move forward.
16:59And when we went travelling afterwards, it was absolutely brilliant.
17:02So, we still kind of like that impetus to kind of want to engage with life,
17:06to kind of like get involved and to meet people and things like that.
17:11So, you know...
17:12They're positive.
17:13Yeah, exactly. I think you have to.
17:14Rather than negative.
17:15Yeah, absolutely.
17:19For Yin and Gaz, the race strengthened their bond.
17:23It probably has brought us more together.
17:25And what I think we want in life for the pair of us is just to be happy,
17:30whether I find love, whether Yin finds love again or whatever.
17:33We'll always be in each other's lives because we're just great friends.
17:36It probably seems really bizarre to the outside world, but to us it's normal.
17:41You know, and as we've said, you know, at the end of the day,
17:43all I've ever wanted was the best for Yin.
17:45And I'm just very proud of how Yin's become.
17:50It's all right.
17:52Gaz is the most amazing, kind-hearted, supportive person.
17:56I would always want him to always back me,
17:59because I don't think I could have done it without you.
18:06It's all right.
18:07It's all right.
18:08I know me. I'm going.
18:11Oh, that's brilliant.
18:16Travelling through the two most populated countries in the world,
18:20with a combined population of almost three billion.
18:24Namaste.
18:25Namaste.
18:26Oh, yeah.
18:28Their meetings with the locals made all the difference to their race.
18:32We didn't know what to expect, but aren't they lovely?
18:35If you can help us, that would be great.
18:37Yeah, this is India. Anything can happen.
18:40As not all of their encounters can be shown,
18:43they share their most memorable unseen moments with each other.
18:47We met some wonderful people who went out of their way to help us.
18:50You don't have to do much to do something that means so much.
18:54Like, built so much more of an understanding of the culture.
18:58I loved that.
19:00What happens if they can't print the tickets out?
19:02Be a print.
19:03They will? Okay.
19:04I like your confidence.
19:05I'm trusting you.
19:06We found these people, and they booked us the bus ticket that we needed.
19:11I can't believe this.
19:13People are just being so unnecessarily kind.
19:16And they got us a taxi to take us to a printing shop.
19:21He's done it already.
19:22No!
19:24No way!
19:26Thank you so much.
19:29This way.
19:30This way?
19:31At the start of the race, even before,
19:33I'm not very good at communicating with people.
19:36Yes, yeah.
19:37Make sure she gets the background in.
19:39You keep moving away from them.
19:41Yeah, because she's like...
19:42Don't put your arm up there.
19:43They look so stupid.
19:44Okay, there.
19:45Put it down.
19:46Can you...
19:47Okay, you know what? It's okay.
19:48We definitely started off in a position where neither of us wanted to speak to anyone,
19:53especially with that extra thing of the language barriers.
19:58Beijing?
19:59So, from here to here.
20:01So, whenever someone would just stop to listen,
20:04even if we didn't get any information out of it,
20:06we were still grateful that they stopped because nobody has to do anything for us.
20:11You can just call her Didi.
20:12Didi's older sister.
20:13Oh, wow.
20:14Didi.
20:15Thank you, Didi.
20:19We only finished the race as a result of what everyone else did for us.
20:23We wouldn't have got anywhere if nobody stopped and gave us time.
20:27Having the kindness of strangers has definitely made me be more open to giving everyone else the help they need.
20:36Do you work here?
20:37Yes, I do.
20:38I just got off my shift and that's why I'm sitting here.
20:40Oh, lovely.
20:41I actually wanted to have some questions about where we could...
20:45Birthday, first time in Delhi?
20:46Yes, first time in Delhi.
20:48We haven't had a night out yet.
20:50It's Saturday.
20:51Saturday.
20:52It's going to be a nice night.
20:53Yeah.
20:54Is it going to be so busy?
20:55Of course.
20:56Ah, yes.
20:57I can take a day if you would like that.
20:58I can go with you guys.
20:59Yes!
21:00Come with us!
21:01Yeah!
21:02He saw that we were in need of just having some fun and he finished his shift and took us around Delhi.
21:13And made that experience, you know, ten times better.
21:18Mmm.
21:19All of the people that we met in India, China and Nepal were all lovely people.
21:23Everybody wanted to speak to us and we wanted to speak to them.
21:28Welcome.
21:29You have been really helpful.
21:30Thank you very much.
21:31Well, you don't have to thank me.
21:33Well, I do because you're really nice.
21:35Like my duty too, you know?
21:36You're from another country.
21:37Of course I should help you get around here.
21:39People like you encourage people like us, especially old people like us, to come to lovely places like this.
21:46And I thank you.
21:47Thank you, thank you.
21:48Lovely.
21:49Amazing people.
21:50High five.
21:51High fives, guys.
21:52Give me five.
21:53One.
21:54Yes!
21:55And they're all wanting photographs with you.
21:56We were such a novelty, I think.
21:58Yeah.
21:59Did he swear?
22:00Was he naughty then?
22:01He said, fine, thank you.
22:03A great source of amusement, I think.
22:09Yes, that's all right.
22:20Having taken different paths in life, the race gave brothers Brian and Melvin the time to reconnect.
22:28Here, here you go.
22:30That's me, 1974 at school.
22:33For the first time in 50 years.
22:36Yeah.
22:37What do you reckon then?
22:38Yeah?
22:39Changed?
22:40Smile, man.
22:41I mean, certainly the hair's changed, hasn't it?
22:44I was a handsome lad then, you know?
22:46I used to have girlfriends all over the place.
22:47Did you?
22:48Yeah.
22:491965.
22:50That's mum's writing.
22:51Kid, I wouldn't actually know that was me.
22:54It's not.
22:55That's what we just made up.
22:56Look, who cut your hair?
22:58The brothers wished to discover the connection they'd shared as children.
23:02Ah, lovely.
23:03Lovely.
23:04Lovely.
23:07Oh, what's that?
23:08That's just a piece of board.
23:10The bed and board bits.
23:11LAUGHTER
23:12What's happened tonight is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping would happen.
23:21LAUGHTER
23:23I can't remember the last time we laughed like that together.
23:26When you get to 60-odd, you don't recreate what you had, but you can create, can't you?
23:33When Melve asked me to go on the race, it gave me the opportunity to prove to myself
23:38and to others that I wasn't always staying in five-star hotels or whatever.
23:44It's something that I can do.
23:46I think you're amazing, and I actually wonder if some of the joy you had
23:51and the laughter you had was because you had to rough it for once.
23:54Definitely, yeah.
23:55Some of the situations that we found ourselves in were...
23:57Laughable.
23:58Beyond stupid.
23:59Yeah.
24:00So we'd either cry or laugh.
24:03Oh, God!
24:06Oh, shoot!
24:07The brothers grabbed all the race had to offer.
24:10Just sort of like a...
24:11Twa?
24:12Yeah.
24:17With both hands.
24:19You doing that?
24:20Don't.
24:21Don't you dare.
24:23That's digging deep.
24:24We did all right.
24:25Proud of you for picking up shit.
24:28What a ridiculous thing to do, right?
24:30LAUGHTER
24:32There's a dustpan and brush there, but no, I have to go and pick it up with my hands.
24:36And the look on Brian's face.
24:37And then...
24:38And then...
24:39Oh.
24:40How much?
24:41One person is 700 rupees.
24:42There's two people.
24:43Two people is...
24:441,040.
24:45Can you do it any cheaper?
24:471,500.
24:481,500, OK.
24:49Two pieces.
24:50Two pieces.
24:511,500.
24:52Is that a good deal?
24:53Could have sworn he said 14.
24:55Did it?
24:56No.
24:57Well played, Sam.
24:58Well played, Sam.
24:59While you were racing, did you find the joy again of being brothers?
25:03Selling us in the lifts, wasn't it?
25:05We both kept pressing the buttons.
25:07LAUGHTER
25:08That was exactly the sort of thing we did when we were kids.
25:10We would have done that as kids.
25:11Why can't you let him breathe a bit?
25:14Put him in a bag, Mark.
25:16I was thinking.
25:17LAUGHTER
25:18I knew exactly what you were going to do.
25:20He was going to throw him in my face.
25:21I knew exactly what he was going to do.
25:23I'll pick up my pension in a few months.
25:25I'm 66 this year.
25:27But...
25:28I've got a lot of life to look forward to.
25:31The brothers also ventured into new territory with the relationship.
25:35I'll tell you what I couldn't understand,
25:37and I still can't get my head round to it to this day.
25:40I was never told that you were going to boarding school.
25:43Really?
25:44Yeah, you just went.
25:45Talking about it when we did,
25:48I don't think I realised that I felt as emotional about it,
25:51or the pressure of it.
25:54You keep things bottled up,
25:55and I don't think we realised that we both felt the same way,
25:58cos we'd never had a chance to talk about anything.
26:00We kind of realised halfway through that we weren't that far apart.
26:03It was a little emotional, but we got over it, didn't we?
26:07Cold beer sorted it.
26:10Cheers, mate. Well done.
26:12Cheers.
26:13This race has pulled something out of us.
26:16It has brought us together.
26:18We are sharing things more,
26:20and as long as we remember that, that we are there for each other.
26:23I don't think I'd ever say to Brian I love him.
26:26Even though I'm sure he knows I do.
26:29Hello.
26:30Hello.
26:32Yeah, extremely proud, aren't we?
26:34Firm British handshake.
26:35Yeah.
26:36Over time, moving from handshakes...
26:39Signing overleaf.
26:40Please take it.
26:41Oh!
26:42Oh!
26:43Oh!
26:44Oh!
26:45Oh!
26:46Oh!
26:47Oh!
26:48Oh!
26:49Oh!
26:50Oh!
26:51Oh!
26:52Oh!
26:53Oh!
26:54Oh!
26:55Oh!
26:56Oh!
26:57Oh!
26:58Oh!
26:59And your grandchildren will absolutely love that.
27:01To see that, and the change in the relationship where you've been apart to now sort of thing,
27:05will join your family so much closer.
27:07Well, I hope so.
27:08They'll be wanting to put capes on you.
27:10That upbringing, when we were kids, was tough.
27:13It was hard.
27:15And when we started this journey, we were both struggling to explain,
27:19and we were quite upset about it.
27:21Since the race, I'm now fine about it.
27:25Yeah.
27:26We both now know how we both felt at the time, and we've never mentioned that in 40 years.
27:31Yeah, right.
27:32It doesn't worry me any longer.
27:33It's gone.
27:34Next chapter, I think, is to try and become a family.
27:39Melv hasn't seen two of my grandkids.
27:42I'd say this summer, Melvyn and all my family will get together.
27:47We've actually put ourselves in a position to do this, to become a family.
27:50Yeah.
27:51If you like.
27:52We're looking forward to it.
27:53It's fantastic.
27:54If you don't do anything about that relationship, if you don't keep in touch, you don't do anything,
27:59you tend to drift away, don't you?
28:02And now, I think, after race, we are closer.
28:10Oh, my gosh.
28:12Travelling across the world is one thing.
28:15Look!
28:17Watch out!
28:18It's OK.
28:19It's OK.
28:20It's OK.
28:21Having a camera on you is another thing, you know?
28:24Give me a thumbs up, guys.
28:27Teams spent almost two months on the road, their every move captured by the film crew.
28:33They were patient, they had to be patient, really, because none of us are actors, are we?
28:50Why did you choose to do this, why that?
28:52You don't know yourself.
28:53Yes, you don't.
28:54Yeah.
28:55So I was just like, well, I don't know, I just chose to do it, because it feels like the best option.
28:58But they don't help you.
28:59They don't.
29:00Yeah.
29:01I'm sure people will think, oh, well, they must get a little bit of help here and there.
29:05Absolutely.
29:06They let you go in the wrong direction for as long as you want.
29:09There's many, many occasions you're on a train and you're looking at them and say,
29:12come on, please, please tell us to get off here.
29:14Give me an eye move, man.
29:15Nothing.
29:16Nothing.
29:17It was a Shangri-La.
29:18We were running, we didn't realise the place was right above, but all the crew, all the crew just stood there.
29:22They don't say, oh, they just watch you and record you.
29:26Which way are you going?
29:27I think it's, should we just go down here?
29:28Because the car's, oh, let's go.
29:32This just feels wrong for him.
29:34Come back this way.
29:35We'll go down the stairs the other way.
29:37I'm sure there's a pathway there, that's not the main road.
29:42Do you think?
29:43Yeah.
29:44Let's go up there.
29:46Dharma wheel.
29:47And the fact that all of us had these teams.
29:52And then there's another team when you get to the checkpoint.
29:56Yeah.
29:57At our first checkpoint, when we didn't know we were really, really late, we thought we might still be in with a chance.
30:01As we opened the taxi door, there must have been seven cameras in our face in the dark.
30:06It was a good clue to know that you were in the right place though, wasn't it?
30:09Yeah.
30:11During each leg, the teams are accompanied by an embedded camera crew, undergoing the exact same journey and never leaving their side 24 hours a day.
30:22They use small handheld cameras to stay as light and agile as possible.
30:27But that all changes.
30:32Once the teams near the checkpoint.
30:34Oh, where are you going? That way.
30:37And the checkpoint crew take over.
30:39A production team including directors, coordinators, camera and sound operators, to make sure the excitement of the final push is covered.
30:49When the safety tracker goes off, you completely forget what's around you.
30:52It makes it feel so real.
30:54But then you forgot where you put your glasses.
30:58Specs.
31:00Hey.
31:01Good.
31:02Right.
31:05We're like running as fast as we can.
31:07There's so many camera operators trying to go as fast as we can.
31:11Some are running backwards, some that are holding each other to make sure that they're safe.
31:15Bigger cameras.
31:17Some drones.
31:21I felt like we're in a movie.
31:24One of the cameras was literally strapped.
31:30Leaning out the back of one of the vehicles trying to film it.
31:32Yeah.
31:36When we're leaving each checkpoint, the team's there to film us leaving.
31:41But then as soon as we're gone, they're flying to the next one.
31:46We're moving probably 2,000, maybe 3,000 miles from each checkpoint.
31:51So they're racing us, aren't they?
31:52Yeah.
31:53To get to that point.
31:55Two flights done.
31:56We're in Kathmandu.
31:57We're halfway to Varanasi.
31:59Huge amounts of equipment.
32:01And it's just a massive operation.
32:03Logistically, I don't know how they do it.
32:12After the third checkpoint, unable to cross by land...
32:20Oh, my gosh!
32:23Wow!
32:25I want to see...
32:26Both crew and racers flew over the Himalayas.
32:30That one there is absolutely beautiful.
32:35It is very large, like...
32:37Seeing the Himalayas, it's very special.
32:40It looks unbelievable.
32:43And continued from Kathmandu, Nepal.
32:47We're here, Mel.
32:49The sun's shining at last.
32:51I loved Nepal so much because, obviously, it's very different from home,
32:57but it felt very close-knit.
33:00It was the most vibrant, colourful, welcoming country.
33:03I just loved it.
33:05The only form of transport was road.
33:07Yeah.
33:08And yet they were the worst roads I've ever been on my own.
33:10My arse is still suffering.
33:14Look at the windscreen, right?
33:15Never pass its MOT, would it, that?
33:17He's fine. Let's air through that.
33:20Oh!
33:22It's very rickety, isn't it?
33:26This road is absolutely awful.
33:29I know.
33:30Oh, my goodness.
33:32Wow.
33:33Wow.
33:34That's like being in bumper cars, you know, when you're like...
33:36It's a continuous bumper car.
33:39It was an adventure.
33:40I enjoyed that.
33:42It's like being on a roller coaster.
33:43Yeah, the night bus we went on.
33:45We were trying to sleep and you just had to hold on.
33:48Hold on to dear life.
33:50Your head was hitting the roof.
33:51I thought Mum was going to start crying.
33:53Oh!
33:56I don't mind the roughness on the road.
34:01But it's a very different story when you're on the edge of a cliff.
34:05Look at that.
34:07I want to go again this year.
34:09Oh, you heard.
34:10Like, I want to go up to Everest Base Camp.
34:13Do you find those obstacles not big anymore?
34:15It's just your mindset, really, isn't it?
34:17Yeah.
34:18Yeah, I think you've got to look at reasons why you should do things,
34:20not why you shouldn't.
34:22Yeah.
34:23Sorry, but I remember finding out that you guys were 18 and 19.
34:26And I was...
34:28I've got Mum, and she's older and wiser,
34:30so I felt like I was in good hands.
34:32But you two are still young and silly.
34:34So how you did it, I tell you, it was so impressive.
34:37It was hard, but it was...
34:38All credit to you.
34:42All right, let's keep going.
34:46The young couple started off strong.
34:49Oh!
34:50I'm proud of us.
34:51I'm proud of you.
34:52I'm happy.
34:53Proud of you, well done.
34:55But the magnitude of what they faced...
34:58Right, is he helping, or is he, like, just like...
35:00Yeah.
35:01Well, I'm not sure, Finn.
35:02I have never been here before.
35:06..really hit home when they reached India.
35:09What in the world is going on?
35:13Way too busy.
35:15I've never in my life been to...
35:16Wow.
35:17A place this tight with this many people, I don't think.
35:20It's basically everything I wanted to avoid,
35:22and I'm in the middle of it.
35:25Literally fresh out of school, so to have gone from that to luck now.
35:31It's scary, and it's really intimidating,
35:33because you've just got all these people, all these beeping noises.
35:38We're young, with no phones, any sense of direction.
35:41It was hard.
35:51I have no idea where we are.
35:56Oh, no.
35:58Uh, no.
35:59Bus.
36:00But...
36:01Tickets.
36:02Bus tickets.
36:03We were both just like, what do we do?
36:14Hmm.
36:15More you than me, because I was too busy crying.
36:17You know, the stress that that's given you for two 18-year-olds.
36:21Well, it's laughable now.
36:22And then now, when you're thinking about it,
36:24it seems like it's just such a short period of time,
36:26you know, 24 hours.
36:27Exactly.
36:28But...
36:29Like, end of the world.
36:30Yeah.
36:31I think there was many times in India where I thought,
36:34I can't do this, I need to go home.
36:36Not just want to, I need to, because this is too much.
36:39But I'm really glad I just stuck it out,
36:41because experiencing it's been really valuable.
36:48It's built character in us, I think,
36:51and it's built us as people.
36:53It's tough doing something like this in a relationship,
36:56but I do think it made us stronger.
36:59It was a good way to see if, you know, we can do it forever
37:02or, you know what, this isn't for us, let's end.
37:06Let's split it up.
37:07But that wasn't the case.
37:08We are still together and we're going well.
37:10I think that was a big challenge
37:12and the best challenge we could have had together, I think.
37:14Where you've got this, like, new resilience,
37:17I think if I had had that when I was your age,
37:20I would have taken a lot more risks.
37:22You know, I'm just going to do it, if I fail, I fail,
37:24but I would have learnt something from it.
37:26But we came home and we were just like,
37:28let's go for Australia.
37:30Before race we pushed it aside and said,
37:32oh, maybe not yet, wait a few years.
37:35Do you find that both of you are finding
37:36you're growing into yourself
37:38and because of the experience you know what you want?
37:40100%.
37:41I think it's made me realise I don't really want to get into a job
37:43and then stuck there and not travel.
37:45I kind of want to see the world
37:47and then maybe choose my career path.
37:49We've got that travel bug.
37:50It's clear that we want to just travel more
37:53before actually settling down.
37:56I'd say even getting to know you in the last two months,
37:59from the start to the finish,
38:01I could see you becoming so much more confident
38:04and willing to talk and just wanting to actually, like,
38:07be around other people.
38:09And that was really nice to see.
38:16For the four pairs left in the race,
38:19India was an assault on the senses.
38:23From the chaotic capital, Delhi,
38:26to the baking deserts of Rajasthan
38:29and the idyllic beaches of Goa.
38:32It's a land of extremes and unpredictability.
38:39It was just such a shock.
38:41It was all just so overstimulating.
38:44Like, the traffic, the people, the smells.
38:47Like, you couldn't even concentrate.
38:50Oh, look at this, eh?
38:53Ha-ha!
38:54Bloody hell!
38:55I would not like to drive this.
38:58No!
39:03India has a different feeling.
39:05This is ten times busier.
39:07And just gone past his account.
39:12The life, the vibrancy, the colour,
39:15it wasn't all pleasant.
39:17It doesn't really feel real that we're in India on a tutu.
39:19On a tutu.
39:20I feel like this is a bit like a movie scene.
39:22India is going to be full of surprises.
39:24But it made you feel so alive and part of it.
39:26Oh, there's an elephant being ridden!
39:28Oh, my God!
39:30Holy shit!
39:31Oh, my God!
39:32No way!
39:33Oh, my God!
39:34Oh, my God!
39:35Oh, my God!
39:38Teams that travelled beyond the cities
39:40saw another side to India.
39:42India is so diverse.
39:45I didn't realise that India had a jungle.
39:49It had the sea and the mountain ranges.
39:51It was cold in the north and warm in the south.
39:55And it was so vast.
39:57It just had every landscape available.
40:00It blew my mind.
40:02I'm just in my own little world here,
40:04yet in the most enormous expanse.
40:08India was the furthest thing you could get away from home life.
40:12And yet just so fantastic in its own way.
40:15Wow!
40:20I can't believe it was under the tree
40:22where Buddha himself sat.
40:24It does feel special.
40:25I want to meditate on it
40:26and just let go of a lot of life things.
40:28Let go, start afresh.
40:33Going to the birthplace of Buddha,
40:35just seeing how people across India,
40:38like, travelled to this one space
40:40and to practise, like, spirituality,
40:43just really opened my eyes.
40:44And then after, like, I just embraced it all.
40:48It looks like a picture, you know?
40:52It looks like a cake.
40:57Sisters Elizabeth and Letitia
40:59had drifted apart
41:01and were looking to rebuild a relationship.
41:04Would you like a Taj Mahal built for you?
41:06Me?
41:07Yeah.
41:08No, it's a bit grand.
41:09I think I know what you wouldn't want.
41:11I just don't know what you do want.
41:14I just don't know what you do want.
41:15I just don't know what you do want.
41:18Going into the race,
41:19I think we definitely wanted to bond with each other
41:21because I felt like I'd missed from teenage years to adulthood.
41:27And I felt like I was still seeing you as a child, almost.
41:31Yeah.
41:33Yeah, I definitely felt that.
41:34Like, when you came back,
41:36the way you thought of me was completely different to how I was.
41:39Throughout the race,
41:41our communication just got so much better.
41:43and that was something that, like, I had longed for for so long.
41:52We want to go to Haudgaard.
41:58That's good.
41:59Your confidence gave me confidence.
42:00Your confidence.
42:03Okay.
42:05Wow, this is a spirit.
42:07So we have definitely become a lot more comfortable with each other.
42:14Oh, we're bickering a lot more, but I think that it's healthy.
42:19Racing across the world.
42:21So well.
42:23We're not scared of offending each other as much, maybe.
42:27You're a lot more annoying than I thought you were.
42:30Same with you, actually.
42:33Look how freeing that is for you.
42:34Like, yes, I've said it!
42:42You clearly love each other.
42:43I can hear the admiration for each of you having gone through the journey.
42:47And you can see that being repaired in front of our eyes.
42:50You should be proud of yourselves in more ways than one.
42:53You've achieved something that not many people have done anyway.
42:56And look at you now.
42:58We're proud of you.
43:01Along their journey,
43:03the sisters connected with local families in many homestays.
43:07So now you need to cover it.
43:09You need to cover? Yeah.
43:11Put it back, basically.
43:13And have taken that inspiration into a new family endeavour.
43:16In Cheyenne village,
43:17this is a couple that left the big city to go for a more rural lifestyle.
43:22They've planted so many trees.
43:24It felt quite rewarding to be a part of that.
43:27One more, one more.
43:28Yeah.
43:30Okay.
43:31Oh my gosh, this is so nice.
43:34This kind of reminds me of Kenya though, isn't it?
43:36After rice, we went straight off to Kenya.
43:40Our dad has like a piece of land and he's always dreamt of building the homestay to retire and to stay there.
43:48Working in the homestay, seeing how they're living off the land, just made us think about what we'd want to do in Kenya.
43:53Seeing how people are doing it gave me more of a push.
44:00We are going to build a homestay in Kenya.
44:04Hi!
44:06Coming out of the race, I have gained like a new confidence.
44:09Now I'm not so scared to fail.
44:11And although it was hard and we pushed ourselves, I'm proud of us.
44:17And I'm excited for the future.
44:19Mm-hmm.
44:25The teams learnt much from the race.
44:28But at the heart, the desire to get a step ahead of their competition was their driving force.
44:34Come on, oldie.
44:37Reception.
44:38Well done, Thomas, come on, keep going.
44:40500. Good lad, thank you.
44:42Go, go, go, go, go, go.
44:44We're both competitive people and to turn around and say that we didn't set out to win would be nonsense.
44:50Yeah, yeah, exactly.
44:51I think Brian was a bit more competitive than Melvin, that's how it came out.
44:56If Brian was taking the lead and I thought we were doing the wrong thing, I'd say something.
45:01It didn't happen though, did it?
45:04I remember you guys saying that you spent most of your money.
45:09Yeah, I remember that as well.
45:10We're good, we've got so much money left.
45:12We did tell a few porky pies.
45:14No, we didn't.
45:15We did, we did.
45:17I think it was when we saw you guys on the luxury bus.
45:21We were like, what?
45:23Important to take that.
45:26Brian and Melvin are living the luxury life.
45:29The exclusively luxurious life.
45:33That's why they're spending money.
45:34Well, maybe we should start spending money.
45:37The other teams would come into the checkpoint and they'd say,
45:39well, how do you think you're doing?
45:40And we'd say, God, that was an expensive leg.
45:43The first two nights we were over 600 yen that we'd spent.
45:48Oh, we were.
45:50Don't tell them that.
45:51We were.
45:52Actually, it's very nice and comforting to know we're not alone, to be honest.
45:56We're lucky to be able to eat.
46:01We've only got 15% left, haven't we?
46:04What?
46:08Letitia still believes me.
46:10I can pull her leg any time, can't I?
46:12We were all told lies, didn't we?
46:14About how much money?
46:15Oh, I didn't.
46:16We just knew.
46:18So we were the only ones that were bullying?
46:20Yeah.
46:22But then after checkpoints, seeing you, Caroline.
46:26Oh.
46:27You were so competitive, I loved it.
46:29It really pushed me on as well.
46:31You could tell that little glint that you were going to win.
46:35I remember the closer we got, I cared more about winning
46:38than actually starting to see the sights.
46:40And that really kind of took over towards the end.
46:42That's where we went wrong, mate.
46:44We did the opposite.
46:46We did the opposite.
46:47Because we then saw Finn and Sean Ed on the way in
46:51for the last run-in.
46:52Did you?
46:53And something there just then clicked.
46:55Don't remember.
46:56So frightening.
46:57We really did think we would.
47:00I know, but I want this so fast.
47:01I know.
47:02And I think we will.
47:03I think we will.
47:04I think we have a good shot.
47:05We haven't seen a single team.
47:06Do you not think running back over there?
47:08We would have caught someone again.
47:09We would have caught someone.
47:10Whoa!
47:11Oh, my.
47:13We're so competitive.
47:14We definitely went in to win it.
47:16We were kind of telling ourselves, weren't we, that we were in it for the experience,
47:21but in the back of our minds, we were just like, yeah, we need to win.
47:24Chop, chop.
47:26Calm down.
47:27Enjoy it.
47:29Now I want to win.
47:30I think we have a good chance of winning.
47:32I think we have a decent chance of winning.
47:33Oh, my gosh.
47:34Go.
47:35Go!
47:36I was gutted when I opened it.
47:37I'm not going to lie.
47:38I don't know if I showed you my face or not.
47:39Fine.
47:40No.
47:41Wow.
47:42We're all so close.
47:43No.
47:44Oh, no.
47:45At the start, every checkpoint, we would just try so much, and I think that's where we definitely
47:52saw our competitive side.
47:53Race mode is on.
47:54It was such a lovely thing to see, the first place.
47:55What?
47:56What?
47:57Wow.
47:58I think after that, we were chasing that feeling again.
47:59What?
48:00What?
48:01Should we get on here?
48:02Come on, just rest when we get there.
48:03I was in it to win it from the get-go.
48:04It was the first place.
48:05I was just trying so much, and I think that's where we definitely saw our competitive side.
48:06Race mode is on.
48:07It was such a lovely thing to see, the first place.
48:08What?
48:09What?
48:10What?
48:11Wow.
48:12I think after that, we were chasing that feeling again.
48:13What?
48:14What?
48:15What?
48:16What?
48:17What?
48:18What?
48:19What?
48:20What?
48:21I think after that, we were chasing that feeling again.
48:22What?
48:23What?
48:24Should we get on here?
48:25Come on.
48:26Just rest when we get there.
48:27I was in it to win it from the get-go.
48:31I met many failures along the way, and a lot of self-doubt crept in, but I still wanted
48:36to win it.
48:37Thank you for doing this with me.
48:41The fact we get together is pretty good, so we'll be all right.
48:44We'll make sure we're okay.
48:49With limited travel experience and a desire to see the world, Caroline embarked on the race
48:55with her son, Tom.
48:56I've tucked my trousers into my socks.
48:59I've got plastic shoes on.
49:01I've never seen you happier.
49:03I don't know what's going on.
49:05I don't know if you're drunk or...
49:07I wish.
49:08I feel alive, Thomas.
49:10Does that make sense?
49:11That's really nice.
49:12You start to get old, meant to be slowing down.
49:15I feel there's challenges.
49:16I feel there's adventure out there that I can do as well.
49:19It's great.
49:20To begin with, I wanted to go on the race and seem to drag you along with me.
49:24Yeah.
49:25And it ended up being both of us doing it in parallel as such.
49:28Mum!
49:29Oh, God.
49:36I made it!
49:37Oh, my God.
49:38You could have just gone to the bottom and then come back out.
49:41Are you okay?
49:42Where's the funny cat?
49:43You idiot.
49:45Where's the small bag?
49:46Have you not got it?
49:47No.
49:48You're such a...
49:50Oh, Mum.
49:52That's good.
49:53That's good.
49:55Miss.
49:56What?
49:57You miss.
49:58Every time they laugh, it's you missing.
50:03It's definitely endurance race across the world.
50:07I came on to race not knowing that I needed to learn stuff about myself.
50:11I think I needed to, but I just didn't really...
50:13Know that you needed to.
50:14Yeah.
50:15I don't think I really realised.
50:16Maybe I was just a bit too young and arrogant.
50:19I just thought, no, I'm perfect.
50:21I didn't need to do that.
50:22But I think...
50:23Mum keeps telling.
50:29Can I do left?
50:30Oh.
50:31Oh.
50:32I was born with cerebral palsy.
50:34That's fine.
50:35You're getting the hang of it.
50:37I think so.
50:38It was quite a revelation.
50:39He actually came out and said to a total stranger,
50:42I've got cerebral palsy.
50:44He seems to be more mature.
50:46I'm really proud of him.
50:48I might get into carpet making at home.
50:50I was always worried that people would judge me and see me as different.
50:55And I've always semi-been worried that that's going to kind of hold me back in life.
51:00And also being able to travel around the world without a phone
51:05and just using a bit of common sense and people skills
51:08has really shown me that you don't just need to be academic to achieve.
51:12You can also achieve through many other ways.
51:14It doesn't mean you're not smart, mate.
51:16I'm very nervous to try and not break one,
51:19because I can imagine they're very brittle.
51:21Being a labourer on a building site to do their job.
51:24So that means you are actually a hard worker.
51:26I prefer being outside and working, like, with my hands,
51:29rather than in an office or...
51:31Yeah, that's true.
51:32Probably similar to everyone in this village.
51:34For me, my hobby comes in my job.
51:35That's what I'm looking to find, hopefully one day.
51:38Since I've been back, I've gone kind of the more self-employed route,
51:43and it's really challenging.
51:46It's going really well. I mean, it's scary sometimes.
51:49But I think from race, I've learnt that you always make mistakes,
51:53but there's normally a way around it.
51:55One thing I've realised is I'm a very messy worker.
51:57But that's okay.
52:00It's just given me a hell of a lot more belief in myself
52:03to know that if I want to try and do something,
52:06I can achieve if I try hard enough.
52:09And Tom wasn't alone in his boost of confidence.
52:12Caroline also blossomed.
52:15Thank you. Yes, good, thank you. Thank you for being so friendly.
52:28I really feel that I changed.
52:31It's a bit like the British stiff upper lip.
52:35The way you have to present the dignity,
52:38perhaps that's part of my generation.
52:40I have never been anywhere like this in my whole life.
52:42I wish I'd done it when I was younger.
52:44And I felt more carefree.
52:47And I could just enjoy the moment and immerse in it,
52:49and I felt like I belonged.
52:51And I was in charge of my own destiny
52:53rather than it being predetermined for me just to slow down.
52:58I do think Mum really grew and she got more confident.
53:02We could see your mum grow.
53:04I realised it was something that Mum needed to do.
53:07And I knew it would be so beneficial for her.
53:10And it has been.
53:12What would you be doing, though, if you hadn't gone on race?
53:16Having something for me to do is now at the forefront
53:19rather than feeling I've just been shelved
53:22and I'm not important anymore.
53:24Did you find more of an identity about yourself
53:26and really get comfortable with yourself?
53:28Yes, I think so.
53:29I found a lot of confidence.
53:30I'm not frightened of failure.
53:32Whereas before I was frightened to try.
53:34I remember how well me and Mum got on,
53:39how fun she is and just how much you love her.
53:42I appreciate these times and these memories
53:45because there will be a time that I can't.
53:48This to me is winning.
53:50No amount of money can make me realise all of this.
53:56It was absolutely lovely, thank you.
53:58That's the biggest thing that I think has changed,
54:04is that I see you more as an actual person now
54:07rather than just my mum who's there to help me out.
54:11We now go and get coffee and chat about, like, serious stuff
54:15and actually have a good conversation, you know?
54:17Instead of saying,
54:19Oh, Mum, can you wash these pants?
54:21Like...
54:25The pair not only developed as people,
54:27but honed the race strategy too.
54:30It's all right.
54:3126 hours after the basketball.
54:33And with sheer grit and determination,
54:35they climbed from last to top.
54:38It's OK.
54:39It's OK.
54:40It's OK.
54:42I still remember coming in last at the first checkpoint
54:45as an overwhelming feeling of failure.
54:50In front of myself.
54:54Gutted.
54:55I suppose it has really, really reinforced the fact
54:58that you just keep plodding on.
55:00And just because you've had a setback
55:02doesn't mean you can't improve
55:03and you can't eventually achieve.
55:05And I didn't think you'd ever have to see me at that point.
55:09Oh, yeah. Let's do it.
55:11And I thought,
55:12he still loves me and believes in me,
55:15so I just have to pick myself up and carry on.
55:18Come on!
55:19Thomas, come on.
55:21Bye, darling!
55:23Seeing Mum so upset at the end of leg one
55:25was kind of a real catalyst
55:29for wanting to do better.
55:31Come on.
55:33Oh, my God!
55:36I thought, I am not going to give up on him,
55:40and I'm not going to give up on us no matter what.
55:45And that in itself gave rise to more determination
55:51and an inner strength.
55:55And then we went and bloody won.
55:57There you go, eh?
55:58There you go, eh?
56:05OK.
56:06Almost done in leg.
56:09Oh, my God!
56:10Oh, my God!
56:11Oh, my God!
56:12Oh, my God!
56:14Oh, my God!
56:16I was not surprised Tom and Caroline won it.
56:19I was not surprised at all.
56:20Yeah, no.
56:21Neither.
56:22Yeah, they deserve to win it at the end of the day.
56:23No, we're really pleased.
56:24Mum wants a challenge,
56:25so I feel like going somewhere like Kazakhstan,
56:27where I've never met anybody who's travelled there,
56:29would just be brilliant.
56:30It's the complete unexpected,
56:31and I just think something amazing would come from it.
56:34Make sure you take your phone, though.
56:36It sounds from round the table,
56:37everyone has had their...
56:38Yeah.
56:39..and I just think something amazing would come from it.
56:41Make sure you take your phone, though.
56:43It sounds from round the table,
56:44everyone has had their...
56:45Yeah.
56:46..relationship struggles or personal struggles,
56:48but actually I'm hearing from every single person
56:50so much positivity coming out of the race
56:52and the changes that we've all made to move forward.
56:56It's really lovely to hear.
56:58It makes me feel really warm and feel quite proud.
57:00We've all gone on that sort of, like, similar journey.
57:03I think we all have...
57:04You took it by the balls.
57:05All achieved so much.
57:06Yeah.
57:07So much.
57:09Ta-da!
57:12You're wonderful.
57:13Thank you, sir.
57:17Very lively place, isn't it?
57:20Welcome to my house.
57:21Oh, thank you.
57:22Oh, thank you.
57:23Oh, my God.
57:24Look at it.
57:26Thomas, this is amazing.
57:27Oh, my God.
57:28This is so high.
57:31Come on!
57:32Any minute I'm gonna get run out of my motorbike.
57:34Run out of my motorbike.
57:36It's been more than just the distance.
57:38It's been a journey for us.
57:42It's just as important...
57:43I'm in!
57:44...that you enjoy the journey
57:45as much as you enjoy the destination.
57:52Cheers, everybody.
57:53Cheers.
57:54Cheers, guys.
57:55Well done, everybody.
57:57Yes.
57:58Cheers.
57:59Cheers.
58:00Outdo
58:03and
58:04down, everybody.
58:06
58:26Amen.
