00:00There was blood on the banister, blood on the door, blood on the side of the wall.
00:16They've both been attacked in here, and then the bleeding started in there.
00:20This is a beast of a job. We're going to be busy.
00:22She's pulled it out of the undergrowth, and one end is covered with blood.
00:26Obviously raises the question, where is the other knife?
00:30These are commonly factored in somebody who has been strangled.
00:35We need to understand what happened, where, and in what sequence.
00:41They were both lovely people.
00:43But you see, you don't know what's going on in the home, do you?
00:47Oh, my God.
00:49It's a handgun of some description.
00:51Go, go.
00:54Go, go, go, go, go, go!
00:56Please! Do where you are!
00:57Come on, Hanks! Come on, Hanks, Hanks!
01:00Hanks, you're on your back!
01:02We're cooking on gas.
01:04There's no grey here, it's black and white.
01:08It's murder.
01:08Some days you might have nothing really happening.
01:38And then you have days where everything kicks off.
01:46It comes at any time when you expect it the least.
01:49Some men have just robbed a DPD van and the delivery driver's on the floor.
02:05They've just robbed a DPD van?
02:07Oh my God, they've hit me in the head, yeah.
02:10It's really bad, Indian ambulance immediately.
02:14Whiskey, once you're off, OK.
02:16One, zero, one, go ahead.
02:18Can I just make you aware of 192 that's coming in, please, as a robbery.
02:21Slippery driver's on the floor. He's been hit over the head.
02:26The officers are on their way. They're coming as quickly as possible.
02:28They're on their way.
02:33Swear, man.
02:34Can't trust it, barely.
02:37There's blood everywhere.
02:46I've tried to do a little bit of first aid.
02:48Looks like he's got his head to get open.
02:49OK, I have no idea.
02:51Can you blink your eyes if you can hear me, please?
02:53Get some scene tape on, mate.
02:55Down the forehand.
02:56Six weeks, reach for the log.
02:58We're six minutes into CPR.
03:01Can I also add to the log that behind the DPC driver
03:05is a broken steel golf club that's bent in the middle.
03:09Can't find the head at this time.
03:18I would say it's very likely to be a murder.
03:20Let's go.
03:23Steve.
03:24We're just trying to understand what exactly has happened.
03:26Yeah.
03:27Whether it's a targeted sack or it's a robbery.
03:29Yeah.
03:30But, seen secured.
03:31Barrick Avenue, Shrewsbury.
03:32Barrick Avenue.
03:34No.
03:35Can't be a good one.
03:36We're able to confirm if any item has been taken.
03:40Did you see him take anything, mate?
03:42No.
03:42I was going to be back on.
03:43I was just shaking and screaming.
03:44I was like, what the hell?
03:45It's going to be impossible to start this stage.
03:47Obviously, he's got a van full of stuff.
03:48We can't find what's going on, what's not.
03:51When did it come in?
03:53Seven minutes past one.
03:54Yeah.
03:55I just heard loads of commotion outside.
03:57I looked outside.
03:57There's about four or five, maybe six people in the map.
04:01Four men, black scarves, hats, battle, clives.
04:04Okay.
04:05Hold on.
04:05What's that?
04:06There's a broken golf club?
04:07Shaffling hook can't find the head.
04:09Oh, great.
04:09I'll do a weapon as well.
04:10Yeah, okay.
04:11Children's room got the other end of the golf club, that's right.
04:13We've talked about a large pool of blood, injury to the rear of the head.
04:17What we do is we go to the next rhythm, check, and we've not had a change of rhythm,
04:20and then at that point we stop CPR.
04:22You guys are all happy and in agreement with that?
04:23Just getting a further call come in.
04:27Second driver.
04:29You're going to go front?
04:30No.
04:30No.
04:31You're okay?
04:32Not at the moment.
04:33No, he's not.
04:37It's stopped CPR and time of death.
04:401344.
04:40The eyes, when I saw the eyes, I thought, no, he's all dead.
05:04Right, we'll go across to Portman.
05:06Take it from there.
05:07DCI Mark Bellamy is leading the investigation into the murder of the DPD driver in Shrewsbury.
05:22The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Arman Singh.
05:29His killers are now on the run.
05:34There is an urgency.
05:36If you don't go quickly enough, evidence might be destroyed by the offenders.
05:41They could be disposing of weapons.
05:43They could be burning their clothing.
05:44But you are trying to deal with a torrent of information at that time.
05:52The investigation is now called Operation Columbia and involves 45 detectives and specialists.
05:59We're in pandemonium and we need to sort of identify what we've got so we can start putting some structure around it and start identifying who's going to be doing what because we're going to be busy.
06:14Shall we begin?
06:1413.07 hours, we receive a call from a member of the public reporting a robbery offence.
06:20Some men have just robbed a DPD van.
06:23The delivery driver is on the floor, hit over the head.
06:26Troll officers attend the scene and very quickly identify that this male has what would appear to be catastrophic head injuries.
06:34They've performed CPR for approximately 18 minutes before the arrival of ambulance.
06:40Paul, first of all, those officers that have administered CPR, do we need to do anything in terms of their clothing and swabbing their hands, etc.?
06:47I've asked them to seize their own trousers because they've got blood on them.
06:52They said they tried to avoid the blood pool there.
06:55Potentially we could have their footprints in blood, but we've mitigated that by making sure we know what we've got on their feet.
07:02OK.
07:02I've also asked about their welfare because they're obviously a traumatic thing.
07:08They were pumping up and down for 17 minutes.
07:10Yeah, yeah.
07:13Our victim, Armin Singh, is declared deceased at 13.44 hours.
07:19I've shown the photographs.
07:21The deceased is about 15 metres away from the van, which is still in the scene with the door open.
07:27Did they try and target the vehicle to steal something?
07:30Have they been in it?
07:30Or have they just simply targeted him and ignored the vehicle?
07:36Nobody has approached us or we found who has witnessed the actual incident.
07:39So I want CCTV to be scoped out in and around those areas because what I want to do, I want to identify the vehicles.
07:46I want to know how many vehicles there are and then I want to identify the nominals attached to each vehicle.
07:51The house directly in front of it has got what appears to be a ring doorbell.
07:56There's going to be a lot of potential footage along there and through Coton Hill.
08:00I'm really keen to get hold of that footage, obviously, it'll lend itself to identification.
08:05There was the shaft of what we think was a golf club that was on the floor by the deceased, which had to be moved by ambulance.
08:15There are garden hedges that run all the way along there.
08:18We're going to have to consider a pulse of search because bits could have flown of weapons or been discarded along that route there.
08:26Start doing the CCTV and the house to house.
08:28Paul, your lead on forensics.
08:30And, of course, there's the family and the media.
08:32Crack on.
08:32So we're going to start the other side of the tent and just clear the houses that are facing us, the gardens, and then we just work back up this way.
09:02While the forensics team examines the van.
09:11MIU going in for CCTV.
09:13Officers go door to door looking for any CCTV that could help the investigation.
09:21Obviously from the police, it's in relation to obviously the incident that's unfortunately taking place out there.
09:25Notice you've got a ring doorbell.
09:26First of all, I have to ask you, I don't want to shout too much, does it work?
09:29Yes.
09:29Yeah.
09:29In the past, you would rely on eyewitnesses.
09:34However, people can see the same event and will give you different descriptions.
09:40The amount of people that have got ring doorbells now is phenomenal.
09:43And the thing with CCTV is it doesn't get it wrong.
09:46It doesn't lie.
09:48If you have a look around about one o'clock, say, if that's okay, to see whether a delivery van goes past about one o'clock.
09:54So, in your own words, can you tell me what happened?
10:00I looked on the camera, oh, DVD's here.
10:04So, as I come out there, I did shout in.
10:06I thought, that's strange.
10:07And then I saw the neighbours running.
10:09Yeah.
10:09So, that's why I came out of the house.
10:11I've come out and seen what was going on.
10:14I saw the gentleman on the floor.
10:16He was non-responsive.
10:17The whole woman's head.
10:18Was there any amount of blood that you couldn't see?
10:20Yes.
10:21Can you just tell me about that?
10:22Yeah, there's a puddle of blood from this person to the curb and it was congealing next to the curb.
10:29And just tell me about what you could see on his head.
10:31On the head, it was a large gash to the left-hand side of the top of his head.
10:36From his eye.
10:37From the side of the brain up to the brain.
10:41You can see inside, I don't know if it was the actual skull or I think it was a bit more than that.
10:47And I thought, well, that's the game over.
10:50And his eyes were just fixed open.
10:52It was like someone just pressed stop.
11:01In the footage, Arman Singh can be seen in the delivery van just moments before the attack.
11:11It's the last known image of the victim alive.
11:17I've just had a quick look at the footage.
11:19Literally, it activates as the van pulls up and the driver gets out.
11:22He's literally right outside the address.
11:24As the driver's obviously coming towards it, you can see the passenger on his mobile phone.
11:30And just as he starts to move, it looks like he's going to go across to the driver's side.
11:34And then, unfortunately, the camera cuts off.
11:39And then the next activation is members of the public running past.
11:43So, unfortunately, it's quite a short time parameter on that.
11:46So, I've got some CCTV of the Avengers.
11:52OK.
11:52I've just sent it to me by E-Man.
11:55I just need to send it over to the right people.
11:56Bye.
11:57Bye.
11:57Bye.
11:57Bye.
11:57Bye.
11:57Bye.
11:57Bye.
11:57Bye.
11:57Bye.
11:57Bye.
11:58Bye.
11:58Bye.
11:59Bye.
11:59Bye.
12:00Bye.
12:00Bye.
12:00Bye.
12:01Bye.
12:01Bye.
12:02Bye.
12:02Bye.
12:02Bye.
12:03We need to slow that.
12:04There's three in there.
12:04There's three in there.
12:05Four in the dark car.
12:06There ain't eight in the Audi, so there must be another vehicle.
12:07Where's that?
12:07So, the white one.
12:08The white one.
12:09The white one.
12:09The white one.
12:10The white one.
12:10The white one.
12:11I'm just trying to capture the weapons.
12:12The golf club's left at the seat.
12:26Yeah.
12:27He's carrying a weapon, a long-handled weapon.
12:28Again, he's got something in his hands that are out of.
12:33He's hung there, hasn't he?
12:34Yeah.
12:35Yeah.
12:36Look at this.
12:37Oh, it's a long-handle one.
12:38It's not like a short one.
12:39No, no, no.
12:40It's a proper...
12:41Oh, right.
12:42Suspect by the look of it, everybody's had a go on there.
12:44This is big.
12:45Yeah, yeah.
12:46With eight attackers on the run in two cars, the vehicle details are sent out to every
13:08officer within a 30-mile radius.
13:11This is being treated as a murder.
13:16Intelligence work has been undertaken with CCTV and two offending vehicles have been identified.
13:23The rail station will have immediate access to offensive weapons.
13:28Prevalent of thousands of policies, use of force, stop power, spread traffic to stop the
13:34surge.
13:35Currently got no intelligence-led areas to search, so it's going to have to be reactive
13:41now for your hunch.
13:42I don't know quite what the intel is, but the Mercedes has been discovered dumped on Kinston
13:52Road.
13:53So the white vehicle, which they think is the second vehicle, is in Kinston Road.
13:59Kinston Road?
14:00Here.
14:01Oh, right.
14:02Apparently it's been there since 1.40, the engine's cold and there's no-one with it.
14:06No-one's seen leaving the vehicle.
14:08OK, well, obviously we're going to need the vehicle secure and preserve and a full lift.
14:13Yeah.
14:14I'll put something on the log now, but it'll be a full lift for forensics, please.
14:19Forensic is the key to it, hopefully.
14:22Just rigging this log?
14:24Yeah.
14:25Is it a robbery?
14:26At this moment we'll go with what we've got.
14:31DPD driver assaulted and parcels are stolen, so that's a robbery, but by the time we work
14:37through the intel it might well come something else.
14:40Working out if it's a robbery or a hit means the team has to scour hundreds of hours of CCTV.
14:55Let's take it back to 11.
14:5611?
14:57Yeah.
14:58OK.
14:59Till 2?
15:01Yeah, till 2.
15:02Yeah.
15:03But don't take, that's just purely for footage within that area there.
15:09Yeah.
15:15One hour before the attack, they make a discovery.
15:22The grey Audi is already there.
15:25Not on Berwick Avenue, however, it's a crossroad that looks onto the junction of Berwick Avenue,
15:36and we have a vehicle which is consistent with the grey Audi.
15:40And as far as I can tell from the clips, they remain there, what appears to be waiting
15:45for the vehicle to come past.
15:48This is motion captured.
15:51The next clip we get, DPD van appears, goes up the road and then disappears behind more
15:57houses.
15:58Then, literally, about 30 seconds later, the Audi pulls out, yeah, follows that up.
16:08Closely followed a few seconds later by the white Mercedes both heading up Berwick Avenue,
16:15but they've been there at least an hour, maybe more, because obviously I'm just going on
16:20what I can see on this camera, but they've clearly been waiting for at least 50 minutes
16:24an hour for the van to arrive, because as soon as that van goes up the road,
16:27they pull out and follow it.
16:29It appears they're just laying and waiting for the van to arrive.
16:45The fact is that they've been in the area at least an hour beforehand, which makes me think
16:51there's something, there's more at play here.
16:53There is.
16:54That's how far away our deceased is from the van.
16:57The keys are on the dashboard.
16:58Yeah.
16:59As far as I know, I don't know if parcels have gone.
17:01Doesn't look like a fight to the death of that, does it?
17:03No.
17:04The level of violence, the number of offenders, the fact that they've been in the area
17:07beforehand, he's attacked away from the van, he's all pointing me towards...
17:10Yeah, exactly, yeah.
17:13You'd say the level of violence for some parcels is a little bit OTT.
17:17They've all masked up, they've all got hoodies on, they're all carrying weapons.
17:23Yeah.
17:24Yeah, there's going to be more to this, isn't there, though?
17:26Makes the eye.
17:33Me and Stu are parked up on the motorway turnaround point,
17:36so we can hit Telford or Shrewsbury from here.
17:39The hunt for the suspects spreads across the West Midlands.
17:50Hundreds of miles of motorway and A-roads are under surveillance.
17:55And officers from three forces are now searching for the grey Audi.
18:01Among them, PC Bradley Mercer Wilkinson.
18:04Driving an unmarked vehicle means that we can keep the incident pre-emptive.
18:11If I can sneak up behind them, I can update the control room.
18:16We can coordinate a plan without the vehicle reacting to us.
18:21The grey Audi has triggered a number plate recognition camera.
18:22First on the scene is Bradley, alone and in an unmarked car.
18:36Zula Romeo 2 out, I've got contact, contact with the vehicle.
18:37I'm Himley Road northbound towards Dudley.
18:42I'm behind Echo Yankee, 6-3 Bravo Charlie Victor.
18:43Believed involved in a murder in Shrewsbury.
18:44Yes, yes, TPAP trained unmarked vehicle.
18:45It's not aware of my presence.
18:46No, I'm not an armed asset.
18:47No, I'm not an armed asset.
18:48I'm Staffs Roads Policing.
18:49I have been deployed.
18:50I've been deployed.
18:51I've been deployed, alone and in an unmarked car.
18:52Zula Romeo 2 out.
18:53I've got contact, contact with the vehicle.
18:54I'm Himley Road northbound towards Dudley.
18:57I'm behind Echo Yankee, 6-3 Bravo Charlie Victor.
19:02Believed involved in a murder in Shrewsbury.
19:05Yes, yes, TPAP trained unmarked vehicle.
19:10It's not aware of my presence.
19:12No, I'm not an armed asset.
19:13I'm Staffs Roads Policing.
19:15I have been deployed looking for it, but I'm not armed.
19:18Do you want me to maintain eyeball until we've got an impasse
19:21and armed assets nearby?
19:23OK.
19:28Ten miles away, a team of armed officers is scrambled.
19:32And an impasse helicopter is sent from Birmingham
19:38to monitor the pursuit from the air.
19:56And his second exit, the parade, generally down towards Dudley Zoo.
20:00At HQ, detectives can only follow events on the radio.
20:0530 in the 30, not reacting to my presence,
20:08albeit I do believe he's unaware, unmarked vehicle.
20:12Car's behind it.
20:13I've got a marked car behind it.
20:15Have we?
20:16Where's he going?
20:17To the mids.
20:18To the mids.
20:19That's a shock, isn't it?
20:20It's four up, innit?
20:21Yeah, four and more.
20:22That is 304 in there.
20:23Let's have them all up, then.
20:24I think they're just waiting for the helicopter to get above.
20:27No.
20:28Just to call it off.
20:29No, I don't.
20:30Right, well, that'd be massive, wouldn't it?
20:31If we could get hold of them, it'd be brilliant.
20:33These are bad lads, isn't they?
20:35Mm.
20:36Support for Bradley is still at least 15 minutes away.
20:44I'll maintain eyeball until empass or armed assets can take over,
20:49and then I'll discontinue.
20:50OK, we're held at red traffic lights.
20:53There's possibly four on board this vehicle, but it's tinted windows.
20:58I can't see occupants or what they've got on board ever.
21:01ARV's on, mate.
21:02Yeah, they've got like 10 minutes now.
21:04No, no, no.
21:05Charlie, one, four.
21:08Matt, two, one, five.
21:14The occupants in the vehicle are looking back through the rear window now,
21:18so possibly aware of my presence.
21:20Get that bloody helicopter over there.
21:27OK, we're on to the island, Castlegate Island.
21:31Castlegate, where's it?
21:32Um, it looks like we're going to be continuing road to the Big Tesco.
21:402A, I know he's maintaining Highway Code, but should he fail to stop,
21:44have I got initial authority until armed assets take over,
21:47if he makes off for me no other?
21:49He understood that it should be failed to stop, but you do have authority.
21:57ETA for ARVs and M-Pass, please.
22:00I think he's testing me here.
22:01It's past three minutes.
22:02ALVs, we're about 10 minutes, sorry.
22:11Fuck's sake.
22:13Just for info, Yankee Mark, the occupants are messing around in the vehicle and handing items to one another.
22:24To be fair, four of them told that.
22:26Yeah, yeah.
22:27Jack Chattons.
22:28Exactly knows it's a murder, doesn't it?
22:29Yeah.
22:30Good lad.
22:31Yeah.
22:32Over the bridge.
22:33Passing the Pure Gym to the offside.
22:35ETA, been it aware of them.
22:37Thank you, Zilla Romeo 28, M-Pass are going to be above in a matter of a second.
22:42Continue with your update.
22:4428K, we're through the lights.
22:47And we are committed straight over A461 towards Dudleyport.
22:53Maintains 3-0 in a 3-0.
22:56Highway token price.
22:57Possibly looking in his rear view mirror.
23:00M-Pass, I think we're overhead.
23:01Just confirm these three vehicles behind the HGV.
23:02Yeah, he's in front of this silver course, we're in front of me and then you've got myself.
23:15Visual overhead and down, Lincoln, over.
23:20M-Pass understood, thank you.
23:2328K, he's a right, right.
23:30Do you want me to commit past being unarmed?
23:32It's a dead end, what am I going to?
23:35Yeah, he's in Hellier Avenue, Hellier Avenue.
23:38He's left off to Hellier Avenue, over.
23:40He's dead end.
23:43Just a bit of guidance.
23:46Yeah, tonight.
23:47Romeo 28, YM1 is happy for you to make his follow if possible, please.
23:52Yes, that boat is turning right onto a flipped croft.
23:59I think it is over.
24:01Hovering nearly 2,000 feet above the vehicle and half a kilometre away,
24:07the helicopter monitors everything without the suspects noticing.
24:12No, the boat's thinking of going to be a vehicle wide.
24:14He's at dead end and they're pointing to, if you understand it.
24:16That bus is still in the car.
24:18Just doing a U-turn, about to approach the exit of the close again, now.
24:21Over.
24:22Yeah, keep coming round.
24:23It's going to be your next road on the left as you come round the bend over.
24:28It's just sat up in the close there.
24:29I think it's monitoring the exit entry.
24:31OK, do you do that, William?
24:32What's the ETA for ALBs or other officers, please?
24:38We're on the A41.
24:39Heavy traffic.
24:40Yeah, I'm just going over towards.
24:43Traffic, I'm on my line.
24:44Just coming up to the red.
24:46Great for you, sir.
24:47Yeah, that's good.
24:48The ARBs can have an ETA, please.
24:50Heavy traffic, A41.
24:51Just come over, M5 junction one.
24:53With arm support still a mile away, Bradley is on his own.
25:03Sitting at the exit of the cul-de-sac, just metres from the suspect vehicle.
25:08Yeah, come on.
25:09The driver looks like a male, tattooed right arm, just for information.
25:15Yeah, rear nearsider, passenger out, just going to the boot of the vehicle.
25:41White t-shirt, black tracksuit bottoms.
25:43Yeah, he's just looking at something in his boot at the moment, standby.
25:51Yeah, male's out, he's got something concealed in what looks like a grey hoodie of some description,
25:58like a long, slender item.
26:00He's just gone towards one of the addresses to stand by for the location.
26:05He's ditched that item at the address and he's just walking back to the vehicle.
26:085-1 for info, the item I mentioned, the possibility it could be a shotgun of some description at all.
26:15I'd say I didn't get a visual on it, it was covered.
26:17Oh, fuck, shame.
26:19Can we have traffic units, please, with Stinger points as it exits this cul-de-sac?
26:25It's practically put them in it, YM1's asking for Stinger units either side.
26:28Vehicle's now at the entry point to the close and he's turning left-left back onto Hellier Avenue.
26:34I'll get Stinger out.
26:38With the vehicle on the move, Bradley tries to get ahead and lay a Stinger to blow its tyres.
26:45Come on.
27:04Come on.
27:06Before he can lay it across the road, the car swerves round it.
27:21Stinger was unsuccessful, Yankee Mike.
27:235-1 is unsuccessful, Sting peak drive.
27:25He's now right, right up to Dudley Port.
27:27He is now making good speed, generally towards the bike.
27:32Vehicle is making way through traffic now.
27:35Horse Leahy towards the Great Western way round about.
27:38Whatever.
27:41The pursuit is picked up by a team of officers with docks.
27:47I'm calling Alexander Road.
27:49I am behind the vehicle.
27:50She's doing 40 or 30.
27:52He's not riding off as such.
27:54She might have any sort of speed.
27:57Come on, lads.
27:58We've got to get a hold of him.
28:00Okay, vehicle's approaching the roundabout.
28:01He's on Owen Street with West Park Lane.
28:03He's just going up the canal bridge.
28:09Here's normal road speed at this stage.
28:10They're just approaching the roundabout.
28:11Second vehicle.
28:18Okay, vehicle's held at the roundabout at the moment.
28:23Vehicle's pulling over.
28:24What do you want me to do?
28:25I'm happy for you to approach.
28:27I'm happy for you to approach.
28:28We're going to have to go out for a minute.
28:30Stay home, they're all for you.
28:31Shut me out.
28:32Shut me out, Dave.
28:33Shut me out, Dave.
28:34Shut me out, Dave.
28:35Shut me out, Dave.
28:36Shut me out, Dave.
28:37On the floor, on the floor, Dave.
28:38On the floor, on the floor, Dave.
28:39Driving not out of the vehicle at this stage, I'm on.
28:41Yes, shut me out.
28:42Another ETA-4 ARV, please.
28:45We're about a minute off.
28:46We're about to go out 75 as well.
28:49Put your hands behind your back.
28:50I'll do it now.
28:51Hands behind your back.
28:52Watch your hands behind your back.
28:53You too.
28:54Hands behind your back.
28:55Boot clear.
28:56Vehicle clear.
28:57Anybody in that vehicle, get them all locked up, man.
28:59I'm on the floor.
29:00We're about to go out.
29:02Boot clear.
29:03Vehicle clear.
29:04Anybody in that vehicle, get them all locked up, man.
29:09Hang in, behind your back now.
29:12Be a vehicle near rampage.
29:13Oh, boy.
29:15OK.
29:16Listen to me now, mate.
29:17For a moment, you're under arrest on suspicion of murder.
29:19OK, murder.
29:20You don't have to say anything.
29:21I'm on the way.
29:22We'll make sure we went crash in the streets.
29:23We don't think maybe we're gonna have an insurance and...
29:26Hey, just so you're aware, mate, you're under arrest on suspicion of murder, okay?
29:30Yeah, you.
29:31Murder, do you know what murder is?
29:33Yeah.
29:34The death of somebody.
29:35Yeah.
29:35Okay, so you are arrested on suspicion of that offence, okay?
29:40There'll be a translator in custody, but you're coming with us at the moment, okay?
29:43If necessary to prevent your disappearance, and for a prompt and effective investigation.
29:50Yes, yes, that's all we've seen.
29:56Back at the cul-de-sac, Bradley searches for the discarded item.
30:05It's been four weeks and acts in this bin, covered in a hoodie.
30:30That'll do me.
30:31That'll do me.
31:01That'll do me.
31:03MUSIC CONTINUES
31:28Is it Manjot? Yeah, Hayden.
31:30My name's Matt. I'm the duty custody sergeant here, OK?
31:33Have you ever been in police custody before? Yeah.
31:36Can you just confirm your spelling of your first name, please?
31:39It's M-A-N-J-O-D. Thank you very much.
31:43And is your surname Singh? Yeah.
31:4824 years old?
31:52How are you feeling now?
31:56Shocked. Shocked? OK.
32:00PHONE RINGS
32:10We've got a couple of gentlemen that have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
32:15And, erm, they do speak a little bit of English,
32:17but I just want you just to go, as we go through it,
32:19just explain to them what we're going to be doing next, OK?
32:22Sure, sure, not a problem, sir.
32:24All right, lovely.
32:25Hello?
32:27Hi, he's not here yet.
32:28Oh, OK, sorry.
32:37Jagdeep, OK.
32:38Hi there.
32:39Jagdeep, I've got a Punjabi interpreter on the phone for you.
32:43Can you hear him OK?
32:44Yes, I can hear you, sir.
32:46Due to the nature of this, er, allegation,
32:48you've been arrested on suspicion of murder?
33:00Hello?
33:02I can hear you, sir.
33:03I can hear you.
33:04I can hear you.
33:05I can hear you.
33:09Two thumbs up.
33:10I can hear you.
33:11So...
33:16Five thumbs up.
33:18So...
33:20...
33:23PHONE RINGS
33:39Hiya, you all right?
33:40What I've got to do now is I've got to seize your clothes, all right?
33:44I'll give you some new clothes as well.
33:49So I'll lay it on the side here. We'll move this there.
33:53PHONE RINGS
34:00Once we've done all of this, you can...
34:03There'll be a buzzer on the wall where you can buzz that
34:06and you can request to talk to somebody then.
34:09OK, so we'll go through all of this.
34:11PHONE RINGS
34:13Yes, yeah, you will be able to, yeah.
34:15We'll only take off one item at a time.
34:17I'll ask you to take your T-shirt off first.
34:20PHONE RINGS
34:22As the officer takes suspect number four's clothes,
34:37he spots something on one of the trainers.
34:40On right shoe, wasn't it? Blood splatter?
34:44Yep.
34:45Right shoe, off. What's his name?
34:55R's deep. R's deep sink.
34:57Do your hand swabs next, OK?
34:58You've got a cut on your finger there.
35:11Any injuries that you've got on your body, that'll all get mapped.
35:14Because it's a religious band law, we're not going to remove it from you.
35:19But we are going to take some swabs from it.
35:29OK, you rest your hand on your knee.
35:31Facing towards my hand.
35:32Have a second, thank you.
35:33Facing towards my hand.
35:34Have a second, thank you.
35:35And same again.
35:36See you back in my hand.
35:37See you back in my hand.
35:42And same again.
35:43See you back in my hand.
36:07Back at the crime scene, the forensics team continues its examination.
36:27We don't think that the vehicles we've touched by the offenders.
36:32They targeted the man rather than the vehicle.
36:35The victim's clothes are recovered from his body to be sent for testing.
36:54The search for weapons continues along the length of the street.
37:05And turns up something critical.
37:11The missing head of the golf club.
37:18Paul, it's Mark Bellamy.
37:20Yeah.
37:21I covered the head off the golf club.
37:24What sort of golf club was it?
37:25What sort of shape?
37:26It was an iron.
37:27It wasn't a wood.
37:28And it was approximately 11 centimetres on the width.
37:33That's more like a putter.
37:35Not a lot of my limited knowledge of golf.
37:37I've read on the log that it snapped in too.
37:38So we've got both.
37:39We've got both.
37:40Brilliant.
37:41OK.
37:42Cheers, Paul.
37:44Your brain just doesn't stop because you're just constantly thinking about the investigation.
37:59Constantly thinking about what have we got to do the next day.
38:03We want everybody who's culpable to the offence to be brought to justice.
38:15The victim has got to be central to your investigation.
38:20We can't help but become emotionally involved with it.
38:33The victim has got to be taken place decades after war.
38:51dish就會teamashgadabager.
38:53nep.
38:57jxp
38:59Looking round this room, there ain't enough staff here, not for what we've got on, far
39:27from it. I don't know what's available, whatever it is, I want it. Op Columbia is the operational
39:36name and relates to the murder of Armand Singh. In terms of scenes, we've obviously got the
39:42scene at Berwick Avenue. Forensic examinations were completed there last night in terms of
39:49our examinations of Armand Singh. He was eventually recovered from the scene and there's a post-mortem
39:56being conducted as we speak over at Walsgrave. In terms of motivation for the incident at this
40:01moment in time, we're not too sure what it is. I've dismissed the fact that it's a robbery.
40:06What we do know is that whilst the attack happened at 1300 hours, they were in Shrewsbury before that,
40:11maybe for a couple of hours beforehand. So obvious question is, how did they know Armand Singh was
40:18going to be in Shrewsbury yesterday at 1pm in order for them to attack and kill him?
40:23Okay. Right. So in terms of priorities then, we've got four PICs in custody,
40:30all with language barriers, all needing interpreters, Alex.
40:33Yeah, we've got a couple of interpreters jacked up, ready to go.
40:37Okay. Probably best, what, we're going to manage two interview teams?
40:40I'd say two interview teams at the moment with the four is enough,
40:43so we should be doing that fairly quickly.
40:44All right. Poll set will be conducted in and around the area with the objective of searching for
40:51weapons and discarded clothing. Forensic examinations are obviously going to have to continue
40:56with the vehicles that have been seized. CCTV, that's a shed load of work. There aren't enough of
41:03you. This is a beast of a job, and I'll let you crack on now.
41:12Whilst the CCTV is analysed...
41:15Oh, no, coming out because it's all, all the shouting's going on.
41:18So that's happened up there.
41:19In the forensic lab, the grey Audi is being examined.
41:27If there is quite substantial injuries to the victim, you're looking for blood from the
41:33victim that could have been transferred to any part of that vehicle. If that tiniest trace of blood
41:40is there, you'll find it. There's a little mark there as well.
41:46But ultimately, you don't know that it's in there. All you can do is follow your processes.
41:54There's no reaction, so that mark isn't blood. That rules that one out.
42:11There's no blood on the outside. There's no obvious blood on the outside. There's a couple of stains I've marked up KM tested, but they're negative.
42:32There were three phones in the car. Those were all visually examined for blood, clean as a whistle, so they've gone into DFU.
42:38They're in Faraday boxes, I think, ready to be looked at tomorrow morning. I'll now crack on with the inside.
42:44OK. Thanks, sir. All right. Thanks. Take care. Bye-bye.
42:51Although the car has so far drawn a blank, the team is still waiting for forensic results on the trainer
42:58and the hoodie, as well as the two possible murder weapons.
43:12Alice, so you've got Mr Bellamy, Mr Cook, me and Sal are here.
43:16Mate, if you want to go ahead.
43:17So injuries, he's put combination of blunt force injuries, stab wounds and chop wounds.
43:25He's got injury to the right ear, which he says is consistent with heavy impact.
43:32If there's blood on the golf club, then he'll happily confirm that the injury to the right ear is going to be caused by a golf club due to the shape.
43:39Is that where the brain's protruding from the scalp?
43:42The brain protruding from the scalp is going to be the axe wound, potentially, which is in, like, a real large J shape.
43:50OK. OK.
43:51So axe has got blood on it. Happy days. We just need the... and the golf club as well.
43:56Yeah.
43:57You've got the axe wound and then he's got bruising and scrapes to him.
44:02He's got injuries to the back of his hands and he said they could be offensive or defensive, he won't be able to say on that one.
44:09He's got a blow to his right arm.
44:13He's saying that that is just something struck him on the arm and that that could be anything.
44:19He's got scrapes to his knees and cheek, but they could be from collapsing to the floor.
44:25All right, mate. I'll speak to you later then.
44:28OK. Ta-ra. Bye-bye.
44:29Bye.
44:30That's at least four injuries, isn't it? Yeah.
44:32That's four people. Yeah.
44:33Just trying to go through to see who's holding what.
44:37Yeah, yeah.
44:38All four suspects are about to be interviewed for the first time.
45:06The process is overseen by DS Alex Sullivan, a Tier 5 interview specialist.
45:20OK.
45:21You don't just tell the suspects absolutely everything you've got.
45:27We're able to hold back certain key information.
45:30What you really want to do is make sure they're really locked in their account and then we can challenge them on it.
45:38Because we're going into the first interview, but the stuff I'm not telling them about at the moment is the CCV at Berwick Avenue that shows them running into the cars.
45:45We're not going to tell them that we've got the golf club or the axe or the hoodie.
45:52Those are big things.
45:53Thinking about the next interview, you see, I know we haven't done the first ones yet, but...
45:58First up is suspect number two, Jagdeep.
46:07What is your full name, please?
46:08Jagdeep, Jag.
46:09Jagdeep Singh.
46:10This interview is being recorded both audio and visually.
46:16His interview is monitored remotely by DS Sullivan.
46:20You've been arrested for the offence of murder.
46:23That's what you're here today under investigation for.
46:26Have you ever met Amund Singh?
46:37Can I just confirm that you're exercising your right to silence or you're not wanting to answer the question?
46:51Do you know Amund?
46:57Can I just check your saying no?
47:03You've never met him?
47:06Yes, no comment.
47:07Okay, can we just make sure that we say all of that because I don't want any confusion over your answer.
47:12Next in, the suspected driver of the grey Audi shift deep.
47:25I want to talk to you now about the vehicle that you were stopped in.
47:39Which is a grey Audi A5.
47:41What time did you start driving that vehicle yesterday?
47:48Where did you drive that grey Audi A5 yesterday?
47:52Where did you drive the Audi A5 yesterday?
47:57With an interpreter, you can't put the same kind of pressure on as you might want to do.
48:01Sometimes they can understand some English, then they get it clarified through the interpreter,
48:05and that gives them a lot more time to think about what they're going to say.
48:08There's no rhythm to it, so you're not going in with quick questions.
48:11You're not making them think on their feet.
48:16Were there any weapons in the car?
48:18Did you dispose of any items from within that vehicle?
48:21Did you dispose of any items from within that vehicle?
48:33How's the interviews going?
48:35Um, fine. Obviously, really slow, because of the interpreters.
48:39Are they speaking, or is it no comment?
48:41No, it's all no comment at the moment.
48:52Last up, suspect number four, Arshdeep.
49:00Whose trainer had suspected spots of blood on it.
49:03It's impossible to know who's going to speak to you or not.
49:15In cases such as this, you generally work on the assumption they're not going to speak to you.
49:19Unless they know they've absolutely done nothing wrong,
49:22there really isn't much to be gained from them speaking.
49:25There's been many times in my career I've been surprised when people start talking.
49:28What you can do, what many people do, is exercise your right to remain silent.
49:36And the way people do that is they use the words, no comment.
49:44You're arrested upon suspicion of the offence of murder.
49:47Are you responsible for the murder of Arman Singh?
49:50No.
49:51At 13.05 hours, a grey Audi A5 was seen on Burwick Avenue,
50:00where Arman Singh was fatally attacked.
50:03Tell me how you came to be in that vehicle.
50:06In the morning, I met my friend in Smedic.
50:16Then he said to me that I want to go to Smedic for a little while.
50:27And later this thing happened.
50:33Who is this friend?
50:34Manjot Singh.
50:36Who's the driver of the car?
50:37I think his name is Shivdeep, the one who was driving the car at the time of arrest.
50:45Shivdeep, the driver, how do you know him?
50:48I just met him yesterday through Manjot.
50:53And who is the other person in the rear of the car?
50:56You've never met him before?
51:00No.
51:02Tell me about the conversation in the car.
51:04I just asked him why are we going to Shrewsbury and said,
51:11we're just going there for a little while.
51:13And I didn't probe that much.
51:15We're in interview with Ashdeep at the moment.
51:19He's talking.
51:20We haven't got to anything really juicy yet,
51:23but basically he's put himself in the Audi.
51:25He put some more there.
51:27Shivdeep driving.
51:28Manjot in the front passenger.
51:31He's behind Manjot.
51:33And then next to him is Jagdeep.
51:35He'll be behind the driver.
51:37Tell me what was in the car at the time.
51:39In the car, from the beginning, there was a golf stick and a bat.
51:51Describe that golf stick.
51:53I touched it. It had a sort of rubber on the front.
51:59It was about this big.
52:03You said that you've touched that?
52:05Yes.
52:06So your fingerprints or DNA may be on the golf club?
52:10Any fingerprints that are DNA at the golf club?
52:13Yes.
52:14What other weapons could you see for him there?
52:17I couldn't see any other weapons in the car.
52:22When you left the car, did you take any item with you?
52:38Okay.
52:39So the only person you're aware of who's left the grey Audi with an item is yourself?
52:46My intention was just for my own safety.
53:05I picked up the golf club.
53:07Your own safety from whom?
53:09I saw that everybody was assaulting that guy.
53:15I tried to pull some of them back.
53:18But then I got frightened and I ran back.
53:20How close did you get to Aman Singh?
53:23Yes, sir.
53:26Like six foot.
53:28And what did you do when you were six foot away from him?
53:31Did you assault him?
53:32Did you use that weapon to strike Aman Singh?
53:37No.
53:38Did anybody else use that weapon to strike Aman Singh?
53:42I'm not sure.
53:44Did you strike him at that golf club?
53:46I just saw the golf club and ran.
53:51Did you know who that driver of the van was?
53:54No.
53:55Did you ever met him?
53:58No.
53:59Would you be forensically linked to Aman Singh?
54:03No.
54:04Would there be any forensics in terms of DNA or blood from Aman Singh on you?
54:16Come on then, young man.
54:17Ready to get him a drink?
54:18Yeah, I will then.
54:19No joke.
54:20Squash.
54:23No worries.
54:25Don't.
54:26Don't.
54:27Cheers.
54:28Let's go.
54:58The team is still lacking a motive for Armand's murder.
55:07But then they receive information about an incident in Derby
55:11the day before he was attacked.
55:15Two or four people injured after violence broke out
55:18at a sports event in Derby had been released from the hospital.
55:20Officers were called to kababby match in Alverston
55:23at about 15.50 on Sunday.
55:25One person was seriously hurt
55:28during the large-scale disturbance,
55:30Darmeshire Police said.
55:30There's weapons everywhere, isn't there?
55:49There's a way of wrecked weapons.
55:55Chaos.
55:57Yeah.
55:57The intelligence suggests that Armand is being blamed
56:06for an assault on an unnamed male during the unrest.
56:13On some of the clips, what you see is the caravan being upturned
56:17and then this gang attacking him.
56:19OK.
56:20Is that an axe that's swinging around?
56:21Yeah.
56:22So they're all tooled up.
56:24So that looks like a machete there, a sword of some kind.
56:26Do we know why they're having a go at him?
56:28No.
56:28OK.
56:29And, all right, if I just pause that there,
56:31this guy here in the blue jacket,
56:33he's got, like, a woolly hat on.
56:35It's got DPD on the back.
56:43If the intelligence is correct
56:45and the gang believe the man in the DPD hat is Armand,
56:49then his murder could be an act of revenge.
56:53What time is this? Sunday afternoon about four?
56:54It's just Sunday afternoon, yeah.
56:56So, less than 24 hours later,
56:59Armand's located and killed in similar circumstances.
57:09But the gang must have had help to target him so quickly.
57:15So if they've identified where Armand is
57:18within, sort of, 24 hours of that attack there,
57:21that may well lend itself to...
57:26There's an inside man at DPD
57:27giving them the information as to where Armand's going to be
57:29at a particular time.
57:35Inside job, mate.
57:36Inside job.
57:44Police, show yourself!
57:46Show yourselves!
57:48Handgun of some description.
57:49She's pulled it out of the undergrowth
57:51and one end is covered with blood.
57:53In the Audi, pointing his camera to the axe
57:56with blood on it.
57:57Really?
57:58Someone's taken a picture of the van.
58:00It would just be consistent with inside man.
58:03Yeah.
58:04You don't know who that is, do you?
58:06You don't know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know who that is, do you know
