Transcript
00:00April 1995 Louise Ellis a writer and justice advocate vanishes her yellow Jeep is found
00:12abandoned on the side of the road in the Gatineau Hills in Quebec police fear it's the last chapter
00:19in her life her common-law husband Brett Morgan is filled with dread how are you feeling
00:27increasingly terror-filled Marie Perrant a private investigator in training feels compelled to help
00:37find Louise this was way above my head but I was trying to I couldn't I couldn't let go
00:44following her instincts Marie Perrant embarks on a journey into the heart of the crime
00:50her investigation goes so deep that police ask her help in finding the killer
00:57I said to the text stop bringing your body back put on a silver platter for you we thought it was a
01:03pretty heavy claim to make for someone on her first assignment as a PI on a sweltering July
01:10afternoon Perrant confronts the horror of what happened to Louise she ventures deep into the
01:18forest with a killer risking everything to search for the lost woman one with the police could be it
01:25for her he's a very violent man and he stared and he stared and his eyes were fixed on me and I'm
01:36thinking in seconds oh my god he's realized he's made a mistake he's gonna kill me
01:42on a warm Saturday in April 1995 a woman sets off from her Ottawa home to spend the
02:12weekend with her ex-boyfriend and his daughter in the Gatineau Hills in nearby Quebec she is never seen again
02:21the woman is Louise Ellis a 46 year old writer and illustrator with a sense of humor and a flair for
02:32whimsy the artichoke is sure no joke it's related you see to the thistle tis truly an art to get to
02:41the heart without getting choking your whistle she started writing her first book when she was in
02:46university she made pictures using dots from a pencil she was writing for chickadee a children's magazine and
02:54she was also working with children making murals in schools and that sort of thing having the children
02:59participate in the artwork Louise is a woman with many friends and many passions in about 1971 I met Louise
03:09in a dance class I thought that she was a very beautiful person she had kind of a piercing intelligence
03:16about it she was someone who was quite vital you know a lot of health and vitality and energy moving
03:23through her system she's very well educated she's artistic she's a feminist she's into Tai Chi and gardening
03:32Louise's life is very full but over the years there is one thing she has always longed for Louise more than
03:44anything wanted to have a very profound and successful relationship when she met Brett Morgan Louise felt
03:53she'd finally found an enduring love for just over a year they've been living together to me in many ways
04:02it kind of reminded me of like a Charlotte Bronte novel Wuthering Heights there's this class difference
04:08she's well educated and Brett was extremely blue-collar
04:12on April 23rd the day after Louise set out for her weekend in the Gatineau Brett Morgan gets a phone call
04:21he learns that Louise did not show up at her ex-boyfriend's house
04:26Brett files a missing persons report and speaks to the media
04:33this is Louise here it's frightening and it's confusing
04:36Sergeant Robert Pulfer takes on the case of Louise Ellis
04:42Brett told us about what he'd been doing Friday evening apparently he and Louise went out and rented a movie called Nostradamus
04:50partway through the movie he tells us that John Mason of who is Louise's boy from the past called
04:56the house and Louise talked to him for about an hour Louise had maintained a friendship with her
05:03ex John Mason of and his young daughter who was celebrating her birthday that weekend Saturday morning they
05:11woke up and laid in bed and discussed the plans for the day and she had told Brett at that point that she
05:17was going to go up to the Gatineau to visit John Mason of she packed her bags and she left between 1 and 1.15
05:23and that's the last to saw her until he received a phone call Sunday afternoon
05:30Brett calls another friend Brenda Misson who lives in the area she discovers Louise's Jeep at the side of
05:40the road not far from Mason of cottage no signs of anything the doors were locked and inside were
05:49her overnight bag in the back and her purse in the front with the help of Brett and others close to
05:56Louise the police searched the area where the vehicle was found we were all trying to look for
06:02her and involved in the search you know scour the bush and this and that but there is no trace of
06:07Louise in the bushes or in the river Brett Morgan keeps searching on his own initiative he's making up
06:16posters with Louise's picture he actually went up to the scene where her Suzuki side kick was on on
06:21River Road in Wakefield and actually stood there and talked to each and every person driving a car and
06:27and he was out there all the time telling the press that I have to find my sweetie I have to bring her
06:32home Holfer fears the worst where's Louise we have to find Louise is she alive did she disappear has she
06:40been murdered it's endless possibilities as to what happened and and who did it in April 1995 writer and
06:47justice advocate Louise Ellis leaves her Ottawa home for a weekend visit with her ex-boyfriend and his young
06:55daughter Louise Ellis never arrives her Jeep is found an hour north of the city in the Gatineau Hills it is
07:07locked with all of Louise's belongings in it her common-law husband Brett Morgan joins the police in
07:15searching the area but there is no trace of Louise how are you feeling increasingly tear-filled as police dig
07:25deeper into Louise's disappearance sergeant Pulper takes a statement from Brett and learns about the
07:32very unusual way he met Louise we just continued talking to him and got to know a bit more about
07:38him and he was quite free with his information the couple met at a Supreme Court hearing into the
07:46most notorious case of wrongful imprisonment in Canadian history the case of David Milgaard she
07:53was doing research on Milgaard because she always wanted to write a book on David Brett came forward
07:59voluntarily to identify an already convicted felon Larry Fisher as the man who'd committed the crime for
08:07which Milgaard for which Milgaard had unjustly been convicted
08:10they literally met from across the room she was very taken by the fact that he was giving testimony
08:19about such an important issue but at the time Brett was a convict himself Brett was taking quite a risk
08:26really being a snitch a tattletale not a popular position to be in and in prison and Louise found that quite admirable
08:34who was being led out of the courtroom in handcuffs asked if she could talk with him a bit and she
08:40complimented him on the fact that she thought he was courageous to do this Louise began writing to
08:46Brett and within a short time they were romantically involved and she was working to get him early parole
08:53it grew and evolved and it developed into a plan to get him out of jail so that he could have a
09:00productive life with her Pulper wants to know more about Morgan's criminal past and Morgan is surprisingly
09:09Frank Morgan had been convicted of manslaughter for killing a woman in an Edmonton hotel that was 17
09:17years before and Morgan was high on cocaine Louise saw him as a man who deserved a second chance she saw
09:27him as someone who lived a hard life I think he had been abused physically he was into drugs and she
09:36wanted to be that one woman who would make a difference in his life sergeant Pulfer also thinks
09:42Brett deserves some benefit of the doubt well we had to be very open-minded because you know police are
09:47often criticized for having blinders on when it comes to investigations of this sort and we had to
09:51give some credibility to Morgan because he'd report her missing in their time together Louise had given
09:57Morgan unflagging support she set him up in business bottom a truck bottom tools his business was
10:04gardening landscaping Brett has no apparent reason to kill Louise I have a criminal history but I would
10:15never do anything to harm her in her home in the Gatineau Marie Perrant is closely observing the unfolding
10:26drama you know I'm keeping an open mind here I want to help this man I'm feeling sorry for him I'm feeling
10:34sorry for the poor woman that's disappeared Marie who moved to Canada from her native Scotland two years
10:41before is just completing her training as a private eye this case is playing out just as she's looking for
10:48a practicum where her Jeep had been found was only 25 minutes from where I lived that made me a bit
10:56uncomfortable she calls to volunteer her assistance to Louise's distraught partner Brett Morgan so it
11:04was arranged for the following day for me to go to his house I had this big adrenaline rush and I'm
11:09thinking now what can I do here you know I'm not experienced really Marie is nervous but she is also
11:16driven by strong personal motivations I just hated to see women being abused and I believe being a PI
11:24you know I could go out and help women and to help Louise Marie believes she needs to start with Brett I
11:33went up into the porch and this man comes forward and he introduces I'm Brett and he took my hand and
11:40he's thank you for coming and he was quite charming quite charming Marie asks if she can tape their
11:49conversation and Brett is entirely comfortable my hope is the same as I'm sure everybody's is that we find
11:58Louise safe and sound so I can't give up I can't you know I mean she's all I have in my life it's very hard
12:05very alone this is our love was profound he says we were like soul mates Marie goes to the site where
12:17Louise's abandoned Jeep was found not far from the cottage belonging to her ex-boyfriend John Mason of
12:24Stoddard as a gift and her wallet with all her identification her
12:54access cards her bank cards everything so I took a walk up to the cottage I wanted to see if there
13:01was anybody there nobody was there in late April many local cottages are still closed up for the winter
13:08Marie wonders what could have happened to Louise in this lonely countryside maybe a van sitting there
13:15with the bonnet up the guy pretending he's working on his vehicle flags are down Louise stops and she gets
13:23out of the car and then quickly he grabs her as it only takes seconds but the car's locked and all the
13:29ways his belongings are inside the car the more I looked at the Jeep I thought you know this seems more
13:36like a set as if someone has deliberately put it there you know somebody's locked it and left it I've kind of
13:44decided that it's somebody that's knowing Louise this but it's not a stranger I'm pretty convinced of that
13:53in 1995 Louise Ellis leaves her Ottawa home to visit her ex-boyfriend John Mason of in the nearby Gatineau
14:03Hills in Quebec he claims she never showed up the following day her Jeep is found at the side of the road in
14:14the vicinity of Maisonneau's cottage police searches find no trace of Louise and her common-law husband Brett
14:23Morgan is bereft it's frightening and it's confusing Marie Perron a fledgling private eye recently arrived
14:31from Scotland has volunteered to help Brett investigate Louise's disappearance I felt genuinely sorry for me
14:39he seems so distressed but the grieving spouse has a dark past Morgan was convicted for manslaughter in
14:48the death of an Edmonton woman his past makes him a suspect in Louise's disappearance but police don't want to
14:58jump to conclusions it seems that Brett has no motive for killing Louise Holfer wants to know more about John
15:06Mason of the ex-boyfriend that Louise was planning to visit Mason of and Ellis had had a bit of a an
15:13off-again on-again relationship and in fact Mason of left Louise when she met Brett Morgan now was
15:21Mason of jealous that Louise Ellis had been so enamored with Brett Morgan Brett Morgan seems to think that
15:28Mason of is the most likely suspect he confides his suspicions to private investigator Marie Perron over a
15:36number of meetings as far as he was concerned John Mason of and Louise had this very abusive
15:43relationship I'm starting to think maybe John Mason of has something to do with this maybe he did
15:49want Louise to leave Brett Morgan you would have a motive the opportunity well the opportunity would
15:55be there for Louise goes up to the cottage to meal sergeant Pulfer pays a visit to Mason of at his
16:03workplace at the University of Ottawa he gives the detective an alibi the whole weekend he had spent
16:11with his daughter up at the parents cottage the fact remains that Louise's vehicle was found not far
16:18from that very cottage police stage another search this time on Mason of land but there is no trace of
16:27Louise and no evidence to implicate Mason of Pulfer considers whether there is anyone else who could
16:38have a motive for harming Louise Brett had ratted out a violent offender when testifying on behalf of David
16:46Milgaard Larry Fisher was quite a well-known criminal a man of violence and no doubt hated Brett Morgan he's made
16:54threats towards me before at the time of Louise's disappearance Fisher was out of prison he had not yet been charged for the murder that Milgaard had served time for
17:06maybe Larry Fisher wanted to get back at Brett Morgan and maybe kidnap and kill Louise else what better way to get back at someone who basically changed your whole life and put you under the eyes of the law again
17:16detectives look into the whereabouts of Larry Fisher in fact on April 22nd at about 6 10 a.m. in the morning Larry Fisher was the subject of a road stop in Saskatchewan by an RCMP officer
17:28so of course April 22nd is the day that everything happened so at that time Larry Fisher was eliminated as a suspect
17:34Larry Fisher was eliminated as a suspect
17:38meanwhile in the Gatineau
17:40Marie is looking for new insights into the case by playing back the tape she made of her conversations with the missing woman's partner Brett Morgan
17:50I would just go over the recordings and analyze everything just basically take it all back in again
17:56Brett had inspected Louise's Jeep after it was found
18:00I asked her when you looked at the driver's seat I said was it still in the same angle or was it pushed back as if somebody with longer legs may have pushed the seat back to drive
18:10that's when she hears something that blindsides her
18:14it says to me it's exactly the way I left and then you stop this is exactly the way Louise left it when she left the house it's exactly the same
18:23could this be a simple slip of the tongue or could it be that the man she's befriended and has volunteered to help is in fact Louise's murderer
18:35in 1995 writer illustrator and justice advocate Louise Ellis leaves her Ottawa home and disappears
18:45her common law husband Brett Morgan had been convicted of manslaughter in the death of a woman 17 years earlier
18:57but he had won Louise's trust through his testimony in a high profile case of wrongful imprisonment and it seems that he is shattered by Louise's disappearance
19:07Marie Perrant who has volunteered to help Brett find Louise is piqued by an incriminating slip he makes in their taped conversation about Louise's Jeep
19:21Brett turned around and says to me it's exactly the way I left and then you stop this is exactly the way Louise left it when she left the house it's exactly the same
19:30Marie wonders if Brett is in fact responsible for Louise's disappearance
19:36initially at the very beginning you know I saw a man that was distressed
19:41but as time went on it was as if you know Louise was nothing anymore
19:45as for the police after the investigation of two other suspects goes nowhere
19:50they're refocusing their attention on Brett
19:54they've learned that Brett owed Louise over $20,000
19:58she didn't know how she was going to deal with how it was evolving the the money situation
20:04and it was just at that point actually that she disappeared
20:10Pulfer pays a visit to bank manager Lisa Costello
20:14who says that Louise was increasingly agitated by Brett's failure to repay her
20:20she was calling us like four or five times a day did the money come did the money come
20:24but Costello says Louise and Brett's financial problems went far beyond the unpaid loan
20:30it was mainly through her credit line that he was writing checks and putting them into his own account
20:35he would forge her signature
20:37she'd be raging mad blaming the bank that we messed up
20:41and then we would find out that it was Brett Morgan that was actually doing the transactions
20:46although she never would admit to that
20:48Pulfer can now see a motive for Brett Morgan
20:51I think that she was probably going to turn him into the parole office or call the police and say okay here's what's been going on
20:57Pulfer then questions Costello about any banking transactions made on the day of Louise's disappearance
21:04he makes a startling discovery
21:06I remember it was one of those aha moments for Bob Pulfer when he clued in
21:11when Brett first reported Louise missing he said she left Ottawa at 1 15 when Louise's Jeep was found her bank card was in it
21:23at 2 53 p.m. on April 22nd that bank card was used to withdraw $280
21:30bank surveillance tape shows it was Brett who used Louise's bank card at the time Louise was supposedly out of town
21:39we caught him in a lie and technology caught him in a lie there is no doubt about it
21:43Brett Morgan is now officially the prime suspect
21:49according to forensic behavior specialist Dr. Matt Logan
21:53Morgan displays a number of psychopathic characteristics
21:57the psychopath is the ultimate button presser that's where the conning and manipulation and the word charming
22:03which comes up with a lot of people that have been in a relationship with a psychopath
22:07you hear the word charming he was so charming
22:10I would never do anything to harm her
22:13he's extremely smooth like you say a real good con man
22:17if you watch Brett Morgan on television he seemed very believable
22:21before Pulfer can convict this killer he knows he needs more evidence
22:29Pulfer confers with the prosecutor's office
22:33without Louise Alice's body would have been very difficult to depend the murderer on Mr. Morgan
22:40we needed to find that body
22:42police bugged Morgan's house and his surveillance team is set up to watch the premises
22:50Brett my law continues not to work so because of everything that was going on
22:55we became aware of these conversations he was having with someone named Marie
23:00Brett Morgan seems to like her he seems to be telling her a lot of information
23:04he thought that perhaps if she believed him and helped him out that yeah he she would add credibility to his story
23:12when the police realized that Marie is a newly minted private investigator
23:18they decide she could be a huge asset to the case
23:22we talked to Marie Perron
23:24and told her we want to talk to her about the case she was on
23:27first they need to know what she thinks about Brett's story
23:31I said Marie what do you think happened to Louise Alice
23:34and in her thick Scottish accent she says
23:36ah I think he's killed her
23:38then the police make an exceptional request
23:42you know what Marie
23:44uh Brett really trusts you
23:46he said you know we can see that you've got a rapport going with him
23:50and I said yeah I said he's actually he's very comfortable with me
23:53and at that point he says would you be willing to help us
23:56it was very unique we've never done it before
23:58where a person was used to get that deeply into a murder investigation to assist the police
24:03they said maybe try and get information from Brett as to where Louise might be
24:09I said I'll tell you what
24:10he says I'll do better than that
24:12I says I'll get you the body
24:13I felt she was driven to find the body of Louise Alice
24:18so Louise would have some closure and some dignity to be buried properly
24:23it's a tale of fatal attraction
24:30writer and illustrator Louise Alice fell in love with convicted killer Brett Morgan
24:37after he gave testimony to help free a wrongfully convicted man
24:42after his release Morgan moved into Louise Alice's comfortable home
24:49just shy of a year later in 1995 Louise goes missing in the Gatineau Hills
24:56and one month into the investigation she is presumed dead
25:01Brett Morgan becomes the prime suspect
25:05after police find evidence that he had defrauded Ellis
25:09their suspicions are shared by Marie Perrant
25:13a private eye who had volunteered to help Brett find Louise
25:17but who now believes he is her killer
25:21when the police discover that Marie has gained Brett's trust
25:24they make the extraordinary move of asking this civilian to work with them
25:29to help close the net on Morgan
25:32Marie has made a big promise to Sergeant Robert Pulver
25:36he says I'll do better than that
25:38I says I'll get you the body
25:39we thought it was a pretty heavy claim to make for someone on her first assignment as a PI
25:44getting the body is crucial to the case against Brett Morgan
25:49worst case scenario is go ahead and arrest him without the advantage of having the forensic evidence of the found body
25:57to find the body Marie and the investigators form a plan
26:02while police listen in Marie turns the tables on Brett
26:07she uses his attempt to cast blame on Louise's ex against him
26:13so police want me to go along with this and play this one up
26:17like I totally believe John Mason has done away with Louise
26:22she was the cat and Morgan was going to be the mouse
26:25according to Dr. Matt Logan an expert in psychopathology
26:29this strategy could work
26:31the psychopath can be certainly out tricked and these folks will play the game
26:37they love the cat and mouse
26:38they love getting close to people and engaging their sense of fear
26:43I'm saying to Brett Morgan you know
26:45okay you've already killed someone
26:48you have the mind of a killer
26:50if you were John Mason what would you do with the body
26:52he says can you imagine he says a dead body
26:56that's like carrying a sack of potatoes
26:58it's a dead dead weight
27:00so he's very detailed
27:02he was probably talking about himself when he talked about these different scenarios
27:05with respect to the killing of the body and the hiding of the body
27:08and that sort of thing
27:09Marie urges Brett to go with her to the woods to search for Louise
27:14I was putting the pressure on him so he gave me a day
27:17I phoned the police station and said okay I've got the data
27:20the police will do everything they can to ensure her safety
27:24very very risky and dangerous situation
27:27we had to be careful to make sure we we protected her
27:30I went down to the station and they took my purse
27:33and he inserted a recorder underneath the lining of my purse
27:37on a sweltering June day
27:41Marie drives into the Gatineau Hills with a man who is a convicted killer
27:46we had probably two surveillance teams to make sure that we are out there totally covering her
27:52but on the quiet country roads the surveillance teams can't follow too closely
27:59she was taking a risk she was very brazen
28:02we told her we couldn't be with her all the time
28:04we drove around for about an hour an hour and a half
28:06finally you can hear the motor vehicle comes to a stop
28:09and they get out of the vehicle and went for the walk through the woods
28:13we went further into the middle and then all of a sudden he stops and he looks at me
28:20Brett was absolutely soaking so much so if he had wrung out his t-shirt
28:25it would have just dripped with sweat
28:28it's the early summer of 1995 and Marie Perrant is in the woods searching for the body of Louise Ellis
28:38a woman who's been missing and presumed dead for just over two months
28:43Marie is accompanied by Brett Morgan, Louise's common law husband
28:49who is now suspected to be her killer
28:52in the public eye he has played the role of the grieving spouse
28:57and Marie had come forward to volunteer her help to him in finding Louise
29:03but Brett Morgan doesn't know that Marie is now working with the Ottawa police
29:08if he realizes Marie could be in grave danger
29:13worst case scenario was her getting hurt
29:17one whiff of the police could be it for her because he was a very violent man
29:21a surveillance team is tracking every move of Marie Perrant's perilous journey
29:28that is until they lose sight of Marie and Brett at what could be a crucial moment
29:36the surveillance team can hear everything
29:39but they have no idea where in the woods Marie and Brett are
29:44it was very unnerving
29:46if he had decided to attack me or whatever
29:51police weren't even anywhere close
29:53I wouldn't have stood a chance against him to be honest
29:55he was a strong man
29:57everything's so quiet there
30:00even the birds no noise nothing
30:03no wind it was eerie eerie quiet
30:07suddenly the quiet is broken by the oppressive whir of a helicopter
30:16and it seems so low down
30:18and it's making this horrendous noise
30:20and I'm going oh I don't believe this
30:22and I know who it is I know it's a police
30:24her safety was the primary concern we had
30:28the cops are relieved to see Marie is safe
30:32but the operation could be blown
30:35and I could see him starting to freak out a bit
30:39but he asked me if I was undercover
30:41and I said to him you know what I put my arms out like that
30:44pat me down
30:45but he doesn't know I've got a wire in my back
30:48and he pats me down
30:50or he stops and then he stops
30:52and he says no I'm not going to do that
30:53he says I trust you maybe
30:55but Brett aborts the search
31:00for weeks after he is skittish
31:02and refuses to go back out to look for the body
31:06Marie and Sergeant Pulfer devise a new plan to motivate Brett
31:11using Louisa's money as bait
31:14Bob Pulfer had called me and asked me to let Brett know the rules
31:18around him gaining access to her cash
31:22Brett is the heir to Louisa's estate
31:25but Costello tells him that until her body is found
31:28Louise can't be declared dead
31:30and Brett can't inherit her money
31:33he's got no money at all
31:35he's got no money to pay the bills
31:37he just doesn't have any access to any kind of money
31:40he was taking office equipment
31:42faxes, photocoppers out of her home that she owned
31:45and taking them to a pawn shop
31:46and pawning them off to get more money
31:48the next component of the plan
31:51is to make Brett believe that the police are homing in on Maisonneuve
31:55as the prime suspect
31:57we had Marie Perron tell Morgan that she'd heard through the grapevine
32:01that basically John Maisonneuve had taken a polygraph test
32:04with respect to the missing Louise Ellis
32:06and he'd failed the polygraph
32:08well I could see him
32:09it's like his mind just went into overdrive
32:12boom boom boom boom
32:14I said now all we need is a body
32:16if we find Louise
32:18he says you know I could be blamed for this
32:21so at that point we're sitting down
32:23and he's having a beer with me
32:24he says you could be undercover
32:26and at that point he's leaning over towards me
32:29and he's getting closer to my face
32:31and you know I just thought for a moment
32:34God what do I do here
32:36is he testing me to see if I'm really
32:38if I was a cop I'm not going to kiss him
32:40within seconds I make that judgmental call
32:43and I decide yes I'm going to go with this
32:45so when he does kiss me and I do respond
32:50I just made my blood go so cold
32:55but I did it and it seemed to put me very much at ease
33:00but the police who are watching
33:02are not comfortable with this at all
33:05and with good reason according to criminal psychologist
33:08Dr. Matt Logan
33:10the thrill of going back to the scene of the crime
33:13is often sexual
33:15it's a very very scary game
33:17for a person to be playing with someone
33:19if that person had a total lack of remorse
33:21and lack of empathy
33:23I get a call on my cell phone
33:26it's the police
33:28and I say Marie get out of there now
33:31she pretends to be talking to her daughter
33:34okay Teresa yeah I'll be home shortly
33:37okay sweetheart there's Sally there for supper
33:39and I says to Brett you know what
33:41I have to get home for trees
33:43I need to get home
33:44what are we going to do about tomorrow
33:45is this search on are we going to do this
33:48and he says yes we're on for tomorrow
33:50Marie has accomplished what she set out to do
33:54but she gets an earful from the police
33:58we debriefed her later on that night
34:00and we really dumped on her
34:02you know what are you doing
34:03what are you playing at
34:04you cannot get close to that man
34:06it's dangerous enough
34:07without him feeling you have some feelings towards him
34:10my main objective was to find Louise
34:13and if it meant that I had to kiss Brett Morgan
34:16I get him to totally believe in me
34:19trust in me
34:20you know then so be it
34:26this is the chilling story of Louise Ellis
34:29a woman gone missing
34:31whose body it's suspected is hidden deep in the forest
34:37Marie Perrant is a novice private investigator
34:40who has formed a relationship with Louise's common-law husband Brett Morgan
34:45a previously convicted killer
34:47she has offered to help him find Louise
34:52I really wanted to find her
34:54I really did
34:55how many things
34:56Marie is now convinced that it was Brett
34:59who killed his common-law wife
35:01and she has been working with the police to entrap him
35:04ok
35:05I imagine that a lot of this
35:07Brett is convinced that finding the body
35:10will lead to the arrest of Louise's ex-boyfriend
35:13and allow Brett to claim Louise's money
35:16in fact the police are poised to charge Brett
35:20they're depending on the recovery of the body
35:23for the evidence they need
35:27if Marie loses Brett's trust
35:29a killer could get away with murder
35:33even worse
35:34Marie could be his next victim
35:39on July 7th 1995
35:42Marie Perrant drives to the woods with Brett Morgan
35:46for the second time
35:48I'm thinking is this a day that I'm going to find Louise
35:51all I wanted was Louise
35:54that's all I wanted
35:56of course I'm a bit nervous
35:58you're driving along here
36:00there's a body out here
36:02and you've got a man sitting beside you
36:05he's actually killed this woman
36:07it was really quite eerie I'll tell you
36:10Brett, imagine how you must have been feeling that day
36:15Brett may be wary of a trap
36:19but criminal psychologist Dr. Matt Logan
36:22comments on why he might be compelled to return to the woods
36:27there's just a high need for adrenaline
36:30Brett Morgan may have actually suspected
36:32Marie Perrant of being involved with the police
36:34or even being an operative of an undercover officer
36:37but still did what he did
36:40and that indicates to me again
36:42that he could be interested in that stimulation
36:45I'm that close to getting caught
36:47I might get caught
36:48it's just so exciting to be that close to the edge
36:52The police have wired Marie's purse for sound
36:55and she tries to keep them abreast of her whereabouts
36:58I would come to a street called Rue Perrant
37:01and they would, you know, I'd say to Brett
37:03oh look, Rue Perrant
37:05I'm banking on the police picking up exactly where I am
37:09Marie Perrant returns to the place where she entered the woods
37:13with Louise Ellis' killer
37:15Brett's looking at me
37:19he says
37:20are you not nervous me?
37:22I said, what are you talking about?
37:24are you not nervous to be in the woods with a convicted killer?
37:29should I be?
37:30the psychopath has a much greater tendency
37:33to do a very brazen act of violence
37:37I would say that she would be at huge risk
37:39if he knew she was wired
37:40I said, do you trust me Brett?
37:43he said yes
37:46I said, well I trust you
37:48so we continued
37:50it seems that Brett is not so much searching
37:53as he is leading Marie
37:56when he says to me
37:58just be careful
37:59there's barbed wire
38:02I'm thinking to myself
38:03how do you know there's barbed wire?
38:05it's a lot about power
38:07and the power of being able to go back as if being God
38:10and saying I can be back here
38:12and nobody is going to get me
38:15so we're coming in
38:16and we're going deeper and deeper
38:19the sun is shining through the trees
38:21always remember
38:24then as they come upon a clearing
38:26something catches Marie's eye
38:29Brett
38:30what's that?
38:32look at me
38:33it looks at me
38:36it's Louise
38:39and then I noticed the running shoot
38:42it felt like time has stopped
38:46Brett stared
38:49and his eyes were fixed on me
38:52and I'm thinking in seconds
38:54oh my god
38:56he's realised he's made a mistake
38:57he's going to kill me
38:59I move forward
39:01and I grabbed him
39:03Brett
39:05Brett
39:07it's alright
39:08you're okay
39:09don't worry
39:10we found her
39:11we found her
39:12she's alright
39:13don't worry
39:14it's okay
39:16he's staring
39:17he's staring
39:18and at that point
39:23he blinks
39:25and it's almost like
39:26I broke that chance fix
39:27that stare that he had
39:30and I thought
39:31I'm okay
39:32I'm safe
39:33if she hadn't said things the way she did
39:35or hadn't done things the same way
39:36she could have been
39:38his next victim
39:39she was very brave
39:40and she was very convincing
39:41she knew what to say to him
39:42to calm him down
39:44and walked over towards Louise
39:49what was left of her
39:51and then he gets down in his knees
39:53and he wills
39:54he cries
39:56and he's shouting Louise
39:58Louise
40:00Louise
40:05the surveillance team has heard everything
40:08they're both extremely emotional crying and screaming and
40:12it was somewhat of a
40:18I found a performance by him
40:21later that afternoon
40:23Brett reports the discovery of the body
40:27he is confident that the murder will be pinned on Mason of
40:31but instead
40:32Morgan is confronted by police
40:35and arrested
40:36once he walked in the front door of 474 Elgin Street on that day
40:39he never saw freedom again
40:47Detective Wilford said to me
40:48right Marie
40:49is there
40:50would you like us to pass a message for you
40:52to Brett
40:53as you say to Brett Morgan from me
40:56how does it feel to be taken down by a woman
41:00I've never heard of a PI who's gone to that extent
41:03to that danger
41:04to assist the police
41:05to assist the family
41:06and to assist abused women
41:07she was determined
41:09she was determined
41:10she was determined to see this through
41:12she's very brave
41:15Brett Morgan is found guilty of first-degree murder
41:19though he maintains he's innocent
41:21we believe she was getting ready to go out
41:23maybe to go visit John Mason
41:25and I
41:26it's the crown story
41:27he went into the bathtub
41:28and strangled her to death in the bathtub
41:29and wrapped her body up in the shower curtain
41:38put it in the back of the Suzuki
41:39and took her up
41:40and deposited her in a bunch of bush
41:42covered her up
41:43I've seen people have more respect for burying their dogs
41:46than he did for her
41:47just covered up with a bunch of bushes
41:48police suspect Morgan is responsible for the unsolved murders of two additional women
41:56but within two months of sentencing
41:59he dies from hepatitis C
42:03I always thought that if I were face to face with a killer
42:07there would be a sign a signal
42:09and there was no sign
42:11there was no signal
42:12I say wow
42:13you should see the intellect of the people that they're able to charm and con
42:18the best prison profilers don't know who's going to re-offend
42:22and who isn't
42:23and so how could Louise?
42:42and you look at how he gets to face with a human being
42:43and he doesn't know who's going to face with his dogs
42:45with a plantedwork
42:47and he has no meaning of his poor dog
42:49and he has no meaning of the dog
42:50i i mean that that he's not the only but-
42:51i mean the foot shame
42:52i don't want to know
42:53the foot of the dog
42:54and so he is in the right
42:55i don't want to know
42:56i don't want to know
42:57and i can have either
42:58and if i have the dog

43:01you know
43:02and until next i be in the right
43:05i don't want to know
