01:23to lose the hair it was a pretty big decision i was just so known for it you know and it's a

01:28funny story but i actually ran into carrot top in vegas and we were chatting and he was just like

01:34i'm like yeah i'm thinking about cutting my hair and he just was like what you have to do it you

01:37got very seriously you have to do it i'm like what do you mean he's like i'm stuck like this

01:41this is it like this is my look this is i'm known for this if you have big red hair people call you

01:46carrot top yeah so i joke it was like meeting the ghost of christmas future he's like there's still

01:51time for you to go that's hilarious but anyway so how many years have you been snowboarding yeah

01:56so i started snowboarding when i was probably five six years old i was sponsored by my first sponsor

02:02when i was seven oh wow and then from there i started winning pretty quickly and so then i went pro i was

02:09like 13 versus all these 20 year olds yeah and then the first olympic gold was uh i was 19 it was 2006.

02:16you're not just a snowboarder you're not just an olympian you helped shape that sport becoming

02:23what it is today and i think that that is such an amazing thing hold on let me help thank you yeah

02:29so you knew chase before starting to snowboard or how long you know yeah i mean i've i've known my

02:38friend chase since elementary school i mean he's probably the longest um you know relationship i've

02:45had he's been the person that i call in the midst of all the craziness and after the olympics and he's

02:50the one that kind of anchors me to you know home so what's the biggest issue with the house it's a

02:57very compressed sort of living environment you know the kitchen is probably the main thing i don't even

03:02think they have a dishwasher and they got a second baby no like so does he know anything or he will he

03:08be home when we get here he's got no idea i know he's home but we were always like pranking each other

03:14when we were a kid i thought it'd be great to have like a tow truck pull up and and tow his car

03:19wait that's how instead of knocking on the door that's how you get him out i want to get him out

03:23with that because he loves his truck hilarious yeah so we'll uh well that'll definitely get some

03:27attention so is the truck already there the truck's there i think yeah okay it's just a right up here

03:32i'll pull it here yep so we don't want him to see us yeah okay why don't you get in you get in the tow truck

03:37oh okay perfect it's that car right here all right where should we why don't you guys hang and hide in

05:23ready hey what do you think what do you think needs to be fixed in the house how's your kitchen

05:28like maybe i want a new one he wants a new kitchen okay be careful be careful what you tell sean

05:41this is my only house i have to live here i need something functional do you need any sort of jumps

05:47off the roof yeah yeah big old half pipe going through the living room yeah this is this is all

05:52i got sean has been a friend for longer than i can remember anyone probably being a friend of my life

05:57it's very rare you get to know somebody for 30 plus years uh i think we're both equally uh i don't know

06:05just problem children when we're younger we just were rascals and we wanted to get into stuff we were

06:10just you know buddies that got into trouble together and then obviously we got older and um you know i

06:16think chase went through a pretty powerful life sort of transformation where he realized what was

06:22important to him in his life and he just went after it he's like oh it's i don't need all of this to be

06:26happy i just i want my friends i want you know my family to grow and i and i want to live this simple

06:32but happy life and that's what brought him out to ventura i've seen you do you know so much in life and

06:38your family's growing and all these things are happening and i remember walking through the kitchen

06:42with you and your house with you and you're like we're gonna do this and we're thinking about that

06:45and all these huge ideas i'm gonna get emotional look man i just know life can you know take in

06:54different directions and you got the newborn all this stuff and i just wanted to step in and give you

06:59that nudge and help you you know accomplish this thing that you know might change your life forever

07:04you know as a thank you from me for everything you've done for me so yeah he's always just kind of

07:09happily you know there for me doesn't need anything never wants anything and and that's what's so great

07:14about the relationship is it's not built off of anything i've done and i remember i think i was

07:20going for another olympics it was my third or fourth and he was just like that's cool i mean i'd love for

07:26you to win again obviously but like you got some medals you're good you're good like he's been that

07:32sort of um i guess conduit to that lifestyle for me and understanding that you know it is nice to have

07:38things in life but the real things you just you don't you don't really need to buy those you can

07:43just earn that through you know being a good person being there for for friends being there for family

07:47it's just been this kind of amazing person in my life that really keeps me um my feet on the ground

07:54i mean it's just next level that you guys are here that you're doing this this is like

08:00i'm speechless i have no idea what to expect but you're telling me you hate my kitchen i hate your

08:05kitchen i knew it i knew it she gotta go i called it i called it i love how hard you were trying not

08:13to cry right now i know i was gonna get too long before it yeah all right hey should we just head

08:20inside or yeah all right oh just go ahead and tow this the kitchen has been on our list of things to

08:29do it's something that we knew that we were gonna have to make a sacrifice on when we moved to this

08:33house but the move was important to us because we knew we wanted to be in this area all right what's

08:38your biggest issue where do i start uh when we moved in the house like we obviously love the

08:44proximity to the beach and that's kind of what we signed up for but one of the things that we had

08:49to give up was square footage and uh that came with also the kitchen it's a very small space as you can

08:54see yeah um you know it has such things like which drawer is going to win i don't know my favorite is

09:01this the old yeah oh yeah don't worry about that oh no when's the last time it's my dark secret oh my

09:10god he's actually growing a sweater let me go die don't put it where do i start oh my god i can give

09:20that to you all right at the right price thank you the one real thing i'm noticing yeah it is so closed

09:27off from the main area do you like to entertain and be able to see i think that's the thing that

09:32we've always imagined for the house is something a little bit more open well i see you're trying to

09:36create like a corner bench over here which is nice because you get more butts especially with two

09:40kids in the house you need a bit more space and this is pantry at least you have pantry space too

09:44right how do you open this thing the whole thing comes forward oh laundry yes you get to enjoy

09:50the space from uh eating breakfast to doing laundry and oh oh well hopefully this is so janky

09:58wait who installed this i'm insulted you you did that it was my idea did you not put it you didn't

10:05put a handle on it well i didn't like the way the handle looked and they don't have a dishwasher they

10:10don't have you know a proper setup for the laundry they don't you know the dining's so cramped and

10:15you could just see it doesn't it doesn't work i like all the natural light you've got lots

10:18of windows the glass in the door but when you have your appliances just sort of free floating

10:23in the middle space it it makes it actually feel more crowded if everything's integrated properly

10:28you'd notice that the kitchen would feel a lot bigger i have no idea how i could ever possibly repay

10:33him for any of this this is the ultimate gift our house is probably the most important thing in our

10:39life all right no more talk you gotta go i don't want to ruin any more surprises i'll meet you for lunch

10:44in a bit you said i'm gonna walk through with the guys yeah all right all right yeah have a good one

10:49yeah but not voluntarily oh my god all right all right see you bud for him to recognize how important

10:55that is to us as our family and to me specifically it's next level and to bring such great talent to

11:03the project as well i'm speechless this is actually going to be a bit of a challenge the only stuff we could

11:11do to really transform it would be to like gut all of this and pull walls back yeah the hope would

11:15be that there's no load on this central wall other than just the ceiling joists and if that was the

11:20case it would be a little easier but if there's any load for the roof then all of a sudden there's a

11:26whole extra layer of engineering and everything that has to happen yeah opening it up would be great

11:30like opening up that wall would be amazing but i don't like that half of this entire span is just

11:34taken up by laundry that seems like a waste of space yeah it's in some ways we could just make the

11:38the flow more purposeful like this is all wasted space too yeah if this was open on the side here

11:42you have a whole bank over here of opportunity for storage yeah yeah and it's hard too because this

11:47wall is his tv so if you're getting rid of this it's yeah so that would be taking yeah you'd have to

11:53then contemplate this and the living room at the same time because my thought is we'd have to rejig

11:57all of this too yeah oh yeah because right this shouldn't be where it goes you got a beautiful 80-inch tv

12:02but when you're sitting super far away this far away it's the equivalent of a 40-inch tv yeah i think

12:08that's why you had to go so big with it it's like having a nosebleed section in your own house there

12:13could be a better flow with the tv on this wall here and he's got this kind of trip hazard going

12:17into the kitchen here oh right he's got kids running through i've seen it go down no matter what this

12:22being opened up is going to give more natural light throughout because it's a lot of space i feel like

12:27you may have bitten off more than you thought with this project because it's it's small but it's

12:33going to be a mighty project they're just kind of crammed in this home and i just know that this would

12:39change their world and every day it would be a reminder of you know what they mean to me and how

12:45special they are but are you willing to get hands on and get dirty oh yeah yeah i'm i'm game they deserve

12:51something like this and it's just going to be incredible he just means so much to me care means so much

12:56to me the fact that they'll have this home to raise their kids in i mean it's it's gonna be great so

13:09we have a very unique situation here because i don't have samples to pull out because we don't

13:15even know what we're doing yet because this is a complicated tight space yeah what do you think is

13:22most important as far as yeah like this will be your paper okay you can sign it it'll be an original

13:29sean white drawing and then you can mark up what you think we should do and then maybe i'll do the

13:34same thing and in the end we'll choose what i do okay all right wait how competitive are you by the

13:40way because you're an olympic athlete incredibly competitive yeah so when you come up with an idea

13:46for something like this it's brilliant yes tell me what you're thinking the first thing that jumps

13:52out at me is i think we got to get rid of this washer and dryer yeah at least stack them because

13:57it's just such a space killer the dining area tell me about where you would want dining i think it's

14:03just too crunched in this corner so if we pull it out into this section because this is where the

14:07counter space makes the most sense so that's your actual perimeter cabinetry yeah and then it would kind

14:12of engulf the the sort of um the laundry units okay yeah you gotta get rid of this it's gotta go

14:20and then you don't need two entrances into the kitchen so i would wall this in for chase i know

14:25his style is very minimal he likes things clean and smooth and and so i think just opening things up

14:32and making the flow a lot better is really gonna change everything full dining here chairs or something

14:37like this circling right okay and then there's a little window over here so i imagine the sink being

14:43here i got some notes can i jump in with notes in here i do agree with you stack laundry 100 because

14:49we're trying to save linear footage in the kitchen yeah but my thought is yes we eliminate this wall

14:54down here okay but instead we rebuild the wall right here close it all the way across put our laundry

15:03right here this is so much better because when they actually do their laundry they can then fold

15:07on the dining table you can use that instead of you know being tucked in this hallway and use the same

15:13style of doors that we do with our integrated fridge so it's right here continuous wall so it'll just look

15:19totally intentionally you'll never notice we then have our regular cabinetry coming across here the way

15:24you have it tons of uppers and lowers our range will be over here i agree with you l shape across the back

15:30yeah clearly you do have skills in the design world yay sink here window that window has to be

15:35raised up because it's too low he liked my kitchen where my sink went it's true it's true um and here

15:42instead of doing chairs across the back yeah built-in banquette ah save space on the save space it allows

15:49you can't pull chairs out there exactly okay we need as much depth to that room as possible yeah i think

15:55that this needs to go away okay so that our access to the hallway is here and i think it's going to

16:00make it a lot easier functionally yeah to streamline this space and eliminate those nasty tripping

16:05hazards we'll lay down new light-toned engineered oak hardwood throughout and to get chase the open

16:10concept he and his wife desperately want we'll remove the wall between the kitchen and living room as well

16:15as the wall closing off the living room from the hallway we'll create a focal display wall in the living

16:19room with shelving for family photos and a large flat screen tv facing a stylish but still

16:24comfy l-shaped sofa to give chase more space in the kitchen we'll create an efficient layout

16:28including new custom cabinetry along the perimeter with lower cabinets topped with light porcelain

16:33counters a new sink conveniently located along the back wall and a state-of-the-art five burner range

16:38in place of that awkward laundry closet we'll replace the windows and set them in line with the

16:43sink for a backyard view when they're filling their new integrated dishwasher a panel-ready fridge and

16:48stacked washer dryer will go along the adjacent wall and a trendy banquette along the opposite wall

16:52opens things up even more creating a cool comfortable vibe for both family meals and dinner parties i love

16:58it yeah needless to say i think this is a wonderful sean design um how do we integrate my initials into it

17:07all chase is part of the work i see kitchen cabinets and i feel like you and i need to compete to

17:22see who can rip down more cabinets oh yeah what the heck is going on hello hello what's going on in here

17:28i'm setting up a competition here what's the competition to see who can rip out more cabinets

17:32i have an idea for a better competition rip the doors off and we'll see who can throw the doors

17:38through this little opening through the hole this window's coming out oh yeah everyone gets a door

19:56we've received word from the engineer that there's no load on the central wall other than the ceiling joists

20:01but just to play it safe we've sistered in a joist extension for added support

20:05so this morning is all about windows floors and baseboards how's it going all right it's going

20:11good i can't get over this it's just so much you know the open space it's got the flow now it's

20:17unbelievable i got you know chills just thinking about how excited they're going to be to see this

20:22because i know how i feel but i don't live here i mean this is just so much fun can i just you

21:30to talk about this feature wall here i want to get some ideas for you bro why don't you guys finish

21:39know me all right okay so if you are you only allowed to say things like bro if you have long hair like

21:43that kind of yeah it's a thing this is i just i need to do this okay thank you i mean look i had

21:49curls i had some long flowing logs he had this like you know what are the blonde highlights i don't know

21:57so the old tv they had over here was a gigantic beast i don't think this living room is big enough

22:01for that so what size would you be comfortable with on this wall skill testing question how do they

22:08measure when you say hey it's an 80-inch tv isn't it corner to corner you're smart okay so what

22:13are you thinking is big enough for a tv 80 is too big 80 is too big i'd say 65 65-ish tv

22:24no i think it was important to really dial in that tv wall what do you want to do on this wall i just

22:29know that they loved having all of their sort of items and photos from their travels and things so

22:34uh shelving of some sort maybe a little thinner profile so instead of just doing uh some floating

22:39shelves like this what if we actually do something a bit more artistic so it's not just your typical

22:46cheap bought at the store kind of look okay but because to me this is not interesting enough it's

22:53too basic yeah yeah but that to me is just yeah generic boring how can we make this wall a total

23:01statement instead of it just being a tv with a few little whiskers what if we use like the entire wall

23:06you know i know they're minimalists but they have so many things that they want to display

23:10and they love plants so maybe working in space for that we could do a full shelf across the top

23:16yeah we could have some cool pieces too and would these be kind of like you know uneven yeah like

23:23having it having it be kind of in a in a staggered sort of yeah you know what we could do too is

23:29kind of it doesn't even have to be shelves we could do some boxes or something different that

23:34so it just doesn't look uniform yeah i want to talk to this woodworker that i know josiah okay he's

23:40awesome he's very creative i'll just give him the overview of what we're talking about and then he'll

23:44give us ideas throw some ideas okay great i just think it'll be so nice they'll be able to put all

23:48their personal items photos you know all these things up on that wall and that really speaks to them

23:53hey hey what do we got let it go we got some material decisions to make oh wow okay what do

24:00you want to start with fabrics stone hardware doors let's start with doors the idea was we basically

24:06have like this really nice kind of low profile shaker style yeah and then we'll paint out because

24:11we have the two-tone we'll have the white oak for some of it and then we'll have the painted cabinets

24:16for the rest yeah what do you think as far as style slab versus shaker i mean personally

24:23i love the shaker but i feel like their style is more the smooth finish you want to do slab yeah

24:27let's go slab okay great it's really nice it'll look nice yeah i just think it's more their style

24:32it's a smooth clean aesthetic and they're gonna love it i mean in reality even the mixed metals look

24:37nice i like having the black and the bronze but yeah i can get these knobs in this color okay i think

24:43they would prefer that okay that would be their style for sure all right uh i like it more and i'm

24:49gonna have to go in those drawers for snacks don't don't think about what they need think about what

24:53you know yeah yeah totally fine stone um let's see here uh i feel like this is too much too bold

25:03with the veining yeah i mean if they really really like that clean minimalist aesthetic yeah nothing's

25:11nicer than a nice light stone i mean this has the look of quartzite but which is a natural stone yeah but

25:17this is porcelain so it's like impervious to anything oh wow so cooking and cleaning yeah

25:23exactly you could spill all over it because the kids can come through cause havoc yeah okay so then

25:28the last thing we need to decide on is the banquette we should soften it up with some fabric i think the

25:35the banquette is somewhere where we do need some contrast okay and because this is a family home as

25:40well yeah kids can be a little spilly from time to time so i wouldn't want something that had large light

25:46surfaces like that yeah so my selection would be this fabric here i really love that i mean look

25:53all this together is just yeah yeah it's gonna be a beautiful space really really nice all right nice

25:59job

26:09yeah perfect this feels totally natural it actually feels flow of it's so much better you'd never ever

26:17have guessed the original layout because this feels so much better yeah it makes so much more sense get

26:23rid of that wall and having the cabinetry line up through the kitchen there and it felt so inviting

26:28you know you can be in the living room and see all the way throughout the back kitchen window sweet

26:34okay let's keep going while sean and jonathan are pressing on with the cabinets i'm heading out to see

26:39josiah a super talented woodworker who's come up with a stylish and clever way to enhance the display

26:44wall surrounding the tv hey how's it going hey good to see you good to see you too i know i didn't give you

26:50the kitchen colors or anything like that but you were tinkering a little bit this is a little mock-up

26:54i made i was thinking of the french cleat system which is going to make a lot more sense once we kind

27:00of explain the system right here so you can imagine these getting screwed into the studs along the wall

27:06mounted around the tv oh okay okay so we're not hiding the cleat you literally want the cleat visible

27:11as a part of the the art piece exactly and then we have is this going to be a shelf or is this for

27:17so i thought a fun idea exactly that's where my mind was at i was thinking it's nice sometimes to

27:23add some plants to the space to soften the wall the idea here is to be able to hang a plant down and

27:28oh that's great no i love that and then they can mix and match so you're thinking the whole plan is

27:33you know this week i want this shelf on top on the plants a little bit lower no let's mix it around

27:38let's put this over here exactly i actually i love that and the best part of this project is it's going

27:43to be modular so as the family dynamic changes so can this wall so on that wall the tv's 65 inch

27:51like you're thinking a couple of cleats on the sides and maybe some longer i love that along the

27:55back and yeah i mean i kind of like the idea of incorporating some things like some little boxes

28:01you could put books in here they'd have a place to lean up against something not just floating on

28:06a shelf oh so you're thinking if this is where two cleats are you're thinking a box that would

28:10overhang one or two cleats that could oh that's cool yeah vertical we could do something horizontal

28:14too yes for sure like something like this something like this exactly i like that yeah well let me know

28:20if you have any other questions i appreciate your time josiah is a master craftsman this wall is going

28:25to be a piece of art you swap it on way faster yeah okay don't worry about it i'd be nice about it

28:43actually have you done anything no i've never done this i mean i tried to put a sealant on a outdoor

28:48table once and it was bad so here's the trick is just fill the gaps yeah you don't have to be perfect

28:52get it all around okay now okay grab your rag okay and then wipe the surface

29:01that was really bad that was terrible

29:04so you just gotta have like a nice smooth surface right yeah boom just like that yeah a little

29:09better and so then once you get that okay and you get all the excess off yeah you'll see that it's

29:14just kind of knocking down the tone of the wood and when it dries it's going to lighten from that as

29:18well okay it's going to look even better that's what i love you get that rich beautiful oak you

29:23also because it's a riff sawn cut you don't have the knots in there so you just have that

29:27one beautiful clean really nice yeah and then what we're going to do now is you and this is where

29:33it's good to get your rag that has some on it already yeah and finish staining the board so you'll

29:37want to drag across there so it's even and if it doesn't get even put a little on with your brush

29:41your brush already has lots yeah yeah so we'll go around we'll get that smooth it all out and then

29:48we'll move to the next one i think knowing chase and cara they're going to love it they're going to

29:53really like it and especially with the two-tone cabinetry it's going to be nice sean's been making

30:01like hell what else is new i'm so excited i can't wait here we go take a peek whoa this is insane

30:25we're going to tilt it back and we're going to kind of scoot it right in so the bottom goes

32:09that's nice i can see myself with chase and kara and the kids hanging out sharing a meal and enjoying

32:16that space i love the french cleat system yeah it's perfect because he moves things around and i think

32:23he'll want to make it his own floating shelves just makes so much more sense with the space that we have

32:28you know it just makes it different it sets it apart how did i get all the top shelf stuff you're a top

32:33shelf kind of guy here let me let me help you hold on these two this was just such a special project

33:02for them like i know him well but obviously like there's a bit of anxiousness i want to

33:11and that can be a scary thing that did you get it right yeah in this i think you've not only create

33:17a space that just feels fun and cool really their vibe but also something that's going to make life a

33:21lot easier here and that goes a long way tomorrow you're going to bring him over or do you want to do

33:38i feel like you must be dying to get back into your house being away for the time that we have

34:50it's literally the quintessential best friend that you could ever ask for there's only a few

34:55opportunities in life to give somebody something that changes their life so i feel like our

35:02friendship's been built off just being friends and that's the best part about it i mean i love you

35:08man thank you and for him to show up for me like this is so profound don't thank me yet but i know i was

35:52incredible because not only does it have more room it flows better you have this look of disbelief

35:58on your face right now it's i'm like dumbfounded i i could never imagine this space like this it's

36:06it's so us and it's so detailed drew went off site to custom build this whole display wall here

36:13these are all on french cleats so you can move them all around because i know you like to put your

36:18you know yeah like if you wanted to take some plants and move it somewhere like on the other

36:22side or whatever you want to do you can add more subtract even these moves so you could be like

36:26oh we don't need the storage right we'll pop them out i love the versatility of this it feels

36:30like my home but it also doesn't because it's i could never do this myself this is insane

36:36oh my god oh my god this is incredible yeah the shelves in the living room are amazing to be able

36:46to quickly put things away and you can modularly move them and and shape them the way that you need

36:52is huge have a seat right here here in this chair and it is a swivel chair so pick up your feet

36:59because i want to show you your new dining area and kitchen boom no way shut up where's the wall

37:19here your old table was about this size it was like a teacup table hold on you're asking how we

37:33it's so easy just to stack and fold yeah oh my god that was like what i was trying to do but

37:40you guys this is way beyond keep it going this is a fridge no way yeah we went hidden fridge here this is

37:49insane how's this a fridge it's a cabinet yeah this is amazing like this guy we have a pantry you

37:56got a little pantry here we've never had a pantry in this house there was so much stuff that we just

38:03didn't have and we were kind of limping it along and for you to kind of jump square for us like 10

38:08squares ahead is yeah it's just so incredible this is too much bro counter space oh my how look at

38:15this we put in a little what is that thing a pot filler no way this is beautiful so you don't have

38:22to like fill up and drain the pots over you just fill them up right here kara is going to freak out

38:30this is so wild and we moved the sink from where it was it here all the way over here yeah the sink

38:36was there yeah this is incredible i mean the finishes are insane they're beautiful the marble that goes all

38:42the way to the top like it looks like marble but it's actually uh porcelain so you never have to

38:48reseal it amazing yeah we want to make sure this is a beautiful home but also a functional home

38:53when you have kids running around the last thing you want to do is reseal your stone all the time

38:57so this is zero maintenance oh my gosh it's really nice it just feels so personal you know that we love

39:02these kind of tones and these wood grains and just this palette and the way that you've assembled this

39:06it's incredible did you need a dishwasher by the way no way it's a two drawer separate so you can

39:13do small loads or big loads yeah boom oh my gosh kara's gonna freak out i'm in a complete dream it's

39:21like a full loss of words because you i i don't know i spend so much time thinking about this moment and

39:28what it's going to look like because i live here and you know you spend so many nights thinking about

39:32what the place is going to be how you'll lay it out even if you can't and to see it like this is

39:38something that i would never have imagined it feels so much larger than the way it was before

39:45and i did not know how to bring that to the space it's all connected now it's so incredible and to be

39:50able to have our family down here all together and to enjoy a meal together finally in our own house

39:57it's just it's beyond it's it's the most important thing in life i just wanted to do something

40:02special for you that would just last a lifetime and i'm just so excited for you guys to step into

40:07this new house and really you know live those moments so i'm excited to you know come by for the

40:14next you know few days months years and just see you still enjoying this space you know it's gonna be

40:19awesome yeah i love you dude thank you guys i was excited for you guys because you know the saying

40:30it's like a house is never finished like no it's it's done we did it like imagine when the kids get
