00:00From a hilarious law professor in community to a sinister chef in the bear,
00:05Joel McHale's television characters span the emotional spectrum.
00:08Do you know how to drive?
00:10I don't have a license, but Jonathan has one and we're twins.
00:13Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
00:14You guys are twins?
00:16And while Joel himself...
00:17Can Joel McHale be serious?
00:19No.
00:20Flames, he's all jokes all the time.
00:22Well, we're about to see...
00:23Do you have the keys or...
00:24Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
00:25If we can't get just a little bit of emotion from this comedian...
00:28I feel like it rolls.
00:30Wow.
00:30When he shows some love to Blanca, the woman who's been caring for his family for over 20 years.
00:35She's a 71-year-old woman living alone, and it doesn't work for her with her back issues.
00:41She is family.
00:42She became like our Los Angeles grandma, so it was like a blessing from God.
00:48There's an outdoor window here in the bathroom.
00:50Wow.
00:51What if the whole ceiling comes down?
00:53That's fine, right?
00:54You'll fix it.
00:56Oh, God.
00:57Man, I am very good at construction.
01:01Oh, thank you.
01:03I love you.
01:05Don't tell anyone.
01:06I did get emotional.
01:07I'm feeling good, if I should.
01:13Come on now, baby, you could get me so hooked.
01:18Yeah, now I'm feeling good.
01:21Wow.
01:22Do you know how to drive?
01:24I don't have a license, but Jonathan has one, and we're twins, so I think through osmosis or something...
01:28Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
01:30You guys are twins?
01:31I have a question, though.
01:33Yes.
01:34This is where I start crying, right?
01:35Maybe.
01:36Hopefully.
01:37Can Joel McHale be serious?
01:39No.
01:40No?
01:40I can be, with enough sedation.
01:43You're obviously a funny dude.
01:45Well, I really had no choice.
01:47Terrible student, but I liked people looking at me and just like, hi, ma'am.
01:54Have you actually worked in construction?
01:56Thank you for asking.
01:57Yes, I have.
01:58Have you actually?
01:58So, I don't know if you guys have seen The Sphere in Las Vegas.
02:02Mm-hmm.
02:02I built that.
02:03Okay.
02:03Do you want to do that for Blanca and her place?
02:06I want to do something more complicated.
02:08Blanca basically was the only person that popped into my brain for this.
02:13She is like our Los Angeles grandmother.
02:17We've been here in L.A. for 24 years, and she's been a part of it for 21.
02:22Oh, wow.
02:23We hired her as our housekeeper when Sarah was pregnant with our first kid, Eddie.
02:27Natalie, her daughter, was 13 at the time.
02:31And you so kind of grew up with Natalie as well then?
02:34Yeah.
02:36We went to her plays in high school, her graduation.
02:39Yeah, it's like the daughter we didn't have.
02:43They're in El Salvador right now.
02:45She doesn't know anything.
02:46Okay.
02:46So, this could be seen as a home invasion, which is fine.
02:51Blanca has no idea that this is happening.
02:54Her daughter, Natalie, does because, again, it would be weird if we just showed up with
02:58hammers that started swinging away.
03:00How long do we have while they're away in El Salvador?
03:03Like, I think it's a month, but it might be this evening.
03:07All right.
03:07All right, here it is.
03:08Stop the car.
03:10At least we don't have to, like, sneak because they're in El Salvador.
03:14Good?
03:15All right.
03:15That's cool.
03:16See, do you have the keys or?
03:17Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
03:21Wait, I feel like it rolls.
03:23It's going to be fine.
03:24They're in El Salvador.
03:25Shoot.
03:26Okay, all right.
03:27Well, great.
03:28Now I'm stuck here.
03:29There you go.
03:31What makes Blanca special?
03:33Well, she's tolerated me for 20 years.
03:35She tolerates me because my wife and my two sons are way better and easier to deal with.
03:41So, yeah, she became like our Los Angeles grandma.
03:44We were here with no family, and so it was like a blessing from God.
03:51She is family, definitely family.
03:53Blanca is fully family, and Natalie is the daughter that, you know, my wife always wanted.
03:58My mom, she is a very strong, tough, hardworking woman.
04:05She also continued to work in order to, like, not just raise me on her own, but, like, help her family in El Salvador.
04:13I feel like I learned a lot from her in terms of, like, giving back and the importance of being there for your family
04:20and also working hard myself and realizing, like, how far that can get you.
04:25Blanca's been retired for a few years.
04:27Her back got really bad.
04:29She had two days of back surgery, like a full day of back surgery, and then back to more back surgery.
04:34And at 71, she still needs, you know, a few things here and there to make it easier for her to live.
04:40When I got the call from Joel that he wanted to do this for my mom, my jaw dropped.
04:46I feel like she's definitely, she's going to be surprised, and I think it's just going to hit her all at once.
04:54Oh, boy, which door was it?
04:56All right, guys, and now, my finest joke.
04:59Ow!
05:01Joel can be serious, but he always has to sprinkle in humor.
05:08Hello?
05:08It's almost as if being too serious is too uncomfortable.
05:12Like, he kind of has to make it light.
05:15All right, so this is Blanca's place.
05:17Obviously, this looks pretty good.
05:19The floors look pretty good.
05:21It's a very tidy house.
05:23She remodeled the kitchen a few years ago.
05:26What Blanca needs is she's a 71-year-old woman living alone, and she's had a lot of back stuff, a lot of back surgery, and let's not yet.
05:35And so she's going to need, I think her bathroom doesn't work for her the way it is, and, now, you can see, and she needs more storage.
05:44Why don't you step in there.
05:46And, uh...
05:46Life just got so much better.
05:48See, it's, it's, it's, see, now we can keep, oh, thank God.
05:51So here we are.
05:52This is her bathroom, obviously, and it doesn't work for her with her back issues.
05:59Oh, she also has a chair in the shower, so I guess, yeah.
06:01Yeah.
06:01So this space, too small, and, uh, I feel like this could look a lot better.
06:07I want to do a thing where, like, we get more storage, we bash down that wall.
06:11This is also very strange.
06:13There's an outdoor window here in the bathroom.
06:15Okay, wow.
06:16It's up.
06:17She has a window, as we all saw, a window in her bathroom, an outside window looking into the hallway, which means somehow that window was looking onto the land at some point, probably.
06:28Looking outside, maybe?
06:29There's no plan on Earth where a window would stay from this little entry area to the bathroom.
06:34Look, you guys are the experts, experts who are all wearing makeup and free clothes.
06:38I buy my own clothes.
06:40Hey!
06:40Hey!
06:41I can feel it.
06:42What did I, what did I do?
06:43Which one of you hit me?
06:44The thing about these guys, uh, they're way too nice.
06:49I still don't know which one is which, but they're really nice.
06:51This is weird.
06:53Oh!
06:53No, that's weird.
06:54This is weird.
06:55This is very weird.
06:56And, but even, all joking aside.
06:58Oh, boy, here we go.
06:59If, if this is somewhere where she wants it to be safe for aging in place, if she's 71, this bathroom could be made a lot safer.
07:06When you have a tight space like this, you're more likely to have accidents.
07:10Yeah.
07:10The one thing I'm noticing is, like, that's terrible storage.
07:12She needs more drawer space than that.
07:14Yeah.
07:14And so we could do, and also countertop space.
07:16Right now, she's storing things on top of the toilet, so.
07:18Yeah.
07:19What do we need to do in the bedroom?
07:21Well, first, I'd like to get touched up for makeup, and then I can show you.
07:24Okay.
07:24Watch this, guys.
07:25They'll watch.
07:28Never get told.
07:29It works every time.
07:30The bathroom and the bedroom have not been updated.
07:35Hey, why not spice it up a bit and make it a hotel room and make it nice?
07:40She deserves it.
07:41Let's start with the carpet, which, you know, is not as nice as the floor, so I think that can be changed.
07:46Is it different in the closet?
07:48No, that was the original.
07:49You can see the wear and tear.
07:50No, I...
07:50All right.
07:51And this, obviously, there needs to be more storage space.
07:53Wait, what is it?
07:54Hold on, it's like here.
07:54What is this?
07:56The wall is right there.
07:57A bit of post?
07:58Oh, there's, like, a secret hidden shelf back here.
08:00Do you think it's one of those CIA prisons that I've read about?
08:03Possibly.
08:04It could be.
08:05So this is just open air?
08:07Yeah.
08:08It's just shelves, but there's nothing there.
08:10There's nothing behind it.
08:10So, you know, this actually could work out to our benefit, because if we need more space in the bathroom,
08:14we could actually create a linen closet there and then steal the other linen closet for the bathroom.
08:18So that actually, I like that.
08:20Okay.
08:20That works in our favor.
08:21And then I'd like to point out, as you can see, there was a window there.
08:25I don't know why they covered it.
08:27No, I know why it is.
08:27You look at the headboard.
08:28So they didn't have a good wall to put the bed on, but they didn't do it properly.
08:32It looks like it was just a quick patch job.
08:34Yeah.
08:35And there's a, just a slight smell of mold.
08:39Okay.
08:39It does smell a little musty in here.
08:40Where there's a musty smell, there's usually a moisture issue,
08:43and I'm willing to bet that that window that they covered up with drywall has something to do with it.
08:48Do you think she would want a larger bed?
08:50Who doesn't want a larger bed?
08:51Whoever goes, can't wait to get into that small bed.
08:53I mean, she could fit a king in here, but I think if we did a queen and had proper tables on the side.
08:58I know you guys were...
08:59Where the hell did you go?
09:00So I love the idea of having as much light as possible.
09:03However, that window literally looks directly at the neighboring building.
09:08So there's water getting in, and so there's staining and everything inside.
09:11So I would say finish the drywall in here and just make it go away.
09:15Okay.
09:15So what we want, new bathroom, more storage, kind of redo this bedroom, want it to look like a hotel room, okay?
09:23Like a nice hotel room, not like a motel from A House of Thousand Corpses, okay?
09:27Like a nice hotel room.
09:29This actually feels...
09:29Do you like this?
09:31I don't, but it depends on...
09:32So I can just rip this down right now?
09:34I mean, we could, or we could do it on demo day so that we have time to safely remove all of this stuff.
09:40Or I could just rip it down right now.
09:43I don't think that's a good idea.
09:44Is that a challenge?
09:45I think it is.
09:47What if the whole ceiling comes down?
09:48That's fine, right?
09:49You'll fix it.
09:53Lock him.
09:54I hope you're okay with this.
09:57You know what?
09:59I kind of like this fan.
10:00You're going to leave one?
10:01You like the way it is?
10:01Yeah, I like it.
10:03Look, I didn't know what to expect.
10:05I just knew that I can't tell the difference between them.
10:08Hopefully you can get it done.
10:09If not, I'm going to sue.
10:12Because she's my family.
10:14Dear God.
10:15This could get very bad.
10:16What a terrible idea this was.
10:19Don't hurt yourself.
10:21Yeah.
10:21That should fix it.
10:22I say we get you out of here until we're ready for construction.
10:25We'll come back when we're ready for demo.
10:27We'll come back.
10:27But I think we get the gist.
10:29And I know you want me to cry, but that costs extra.
10:32I'll start it.
10:33I'm going to take the cat and protect it as well.
10:35Yeah, how many celebrities cry on this?
10:37Does everybody cry except for me?
10:39Oh, jeez.
10:47Look at this.
10:49What did you do with all the furniture?
10:51First, I want to double check if you have a reflection.
10:54Huh?
10:55You do.
10:55Okay, good.
10:56Second.
10:56Oh, my gosh.
10:57Look, I do look great.
10:58All right.
11:00I mean, come on.
11:01I look fantastic.
11:03Where do you find so many t-shirts that all come in a kid's ten and under section?
11:08I got a baby gap for all my t-shirts.
11:10Are you trying to make fun of two guys with well-formed pectorals?
11:13Well, I feel like he's got you beat.
11:15Oh, can you do that thing?
11:17Oh, what is this weird?
11:19I don't even have that.
11:20It's fine.
11:21Get back to work.
11:22Do it.
11:25Oh, God.
11:26There you go.
11:28I keep missing.
11:29Okay, I'm done there.
11:34I'm going to take this.
11:35God, you're making a lot of racket.
11:37All right.
11:37I'm going to give you a little more room.
11:39Oh.
11:40Well, this really opens it up.
11:46This is actually a pretty nice shower head, huh?
11:48Don't rip that out.
11:48Oh, now you're making the rules, huh?
11:54There you go.
11:55Thanks.
11:58Okay.
12:00This is a grab.
12:01You can hold it from back under here and under the rim here and just lift it up.
12:04Well, you don't tell me what to do.
12:05I'm the guest on this show.
12:08Yeah, you saw how Drew behaves when his brother's not there.
12:10Keep it level.
12:11Keep it level.
12:12You keep it level.
12:13I don't do this for a living.
12:14I think we know what kind of a monster he really is deep down.
12:18Here we go.
12:20This came off really easily.
12:22That's this whole building is like this.
12:24This is so great that we can help a good friend of mine who's very important to me by destroying her home.
12:34Blanca and Natalie and this entire family really mean a lot to me.
12:42Yeah.
12:46Thank you for being in our lives, Blanca and Natalie.
12:49We really love you.
12:51Is this like demo therapy for you?
12:53What do you mean?
12:54It feels like you got a lot of aggression off your chest.
12:57Oh, this isn't anything of my real aggression.
13:00Can I hold that for one sec?
13:01What?
13:01You are no longer allowed any tools.
13:04Ha!
13:05I have this rule.
13:06When you're handling something delicate.
13:09You took my hammer.
13:10Don't call Joel.
13:12Can you grab a reciprocating saw?
13:14Yeah.
13:15I think there's one right out there.
13:16Great.
13:21Okay.
13:22Oh, I'll get it.
13:23Hold on.
13:24I bet it'll work.
13:26Have you ever been in a movie?
13:28I have, actually.
13:29What movie?
13:29I did, I don't know where I did.
13:32Ah, no, I, you really want to hear about this.
13:35I love that he's having fun and he makes us laugh.
13:38However, we do have to be careful and we have to be cautious at times.
13:41So, focus.
13:42Got it.
13:45Oh, look at that daylight.
13:49Look at that.
13:51Oh, there's drywall in the middle.
13:53This was not done properly.
13:55You guys should really have your own show.
13:58This is the most comically large chunk of shrapnel that you have in your mustache.
14:02I like it.
14:03All right, you're safe.
14:05You've got to protect the beard.
14:07I feel you.
14:07Don't you just catch soup and crumbs?
14:10Said a guy without a beard.
14:11Yeah.
14:12Look, when you have jaws that are this strong and then you kind of layer it over with like
14:18a shag carpet, it's pretty awesome.
14:20It's distinguishing.
14:21We literally have the same face.
14:23Yeah, I would beg to differ.
14:27Nice!
14:28Pulling that back, it looked like we were unsealing a time capsule.
14:32There was some leakage.
14:34There was some dry, what do you call it?
14:35Wet rot?
14:36There was rot because of water getting in.
14:38Great.
14:39Let's clear up the carpet and get rid of this thing.
14:42Go.
14:44This is where I breathe in deeply, right?
14:46Yeah.
14:47Yes, that carpet's original.
14:48He could load that into a missile.
14:50It would be considered a chemical weapon.
14:52All right.
14:53Oh, sorry.
14:54This is great.
14:57Clearly we've made progress.
14:58We destroyed her home.
15:00I kind of feel we need to have you on our wrecking crew more often.
15:04Knowing that Blanca's going to get basically a whole new house out of it has been extremely
15:09cool and fun and satisfying on a level that is unnatural to this planet.
15:15Blanca, it's for you.
15:23You threw a lot of stuff at us when we did the walks.
15:31Were you a little overwhelmed?
15:32So now, just to point out, if they are away for a month, it means we now only have a month
15:39less a day to get this job done.
15:41That's not my problem.
15:43That's your problem.
15:44You better get it done.
15:46We saw this linen closet.
15:47You're not going to...
15:48She needs some storage space.
15:49So I think you're...
15:50Where are you going to find that?
15:51Well, this is this weird cubby that's not even usable.
15:54We could close this off.
15:56Okay.
15:56Across here.
15:57Put the linen closet there.
15:58Then here...
15:59Make more space?
16:00Yeah.
16:00Maybe we move the toilet to over here.
16:03Okay.
16:03Move the door to somewhere here in the middle.
16:05Shower on this left side over here.
16:07So that whole thing's a shower?
16:08That's great.
16:09All right.
16:09So you know that she's got back problems.
16:11She's had crazy back surgery.
16:13For her bed, what are you thinking?
16:15We could put in an adjustable bed base.
16:17Do you sleep in an adjustable bed?
16:19I do.
16:19You have a bad back when you're reading.
16:21You have that.
16:22It helps a lot with your back and neck.
16:24Very exciting.
16:25So, flooring.
16:27Flooring for the bedroom.
16:28Yeah.
16:28What do you want to do?
16:29How do you want to make it luxe?
16:30Her existing flooring is somewhere between these two colors here.
16:33So my goal would be to get it as similar as possible, but do a different pattern.
16:37Okay.
16:38Maybe we do like herringbone in the bedroom, something just to make it feel...
16:41Great.
16:41...not too matchy-matchy.
16:43And then really the last thing is going to be the bathroom.
16:45Make sure she has tons of storage.
16:47Tons of storage.
16:48Would she want to do a tub for older people to step over?
16:51It could be a trip hazard.
16:52So just, yeah, just a shower, I think.
16:54But obviously it's got to be a good size for somebody who's 71, has back issues.
16:58So, yeah, you got to make it accommodating for her.
17:01Well, the process for me where we're looking at architectural plans is me nodding a lot, chewing
17:07the end of a pen going, sounds good.
17:09This is good tile here.
17:11That looks like pretty good.
17:12I have no idea what this is for the fixtures.
17:14I just agreed with Drew because he knows what he's talking about.
17:18That's Jonathan.
17:19This seems like the right amount of paint samples, and we should definitely use all these colors.
17:26Whatever, whichever one.
17:27You know, he had a lot of good suggestions that I had never thought of.
17:30Since you have done this for the last 35 years, I'm going to trust you to pick out some nice stuff.
17:37To give Joel the chic boutique hotel vibes that he wants for Blanca, and to help ease some of her mobility issues,
17:43we'll start by eliminating the linen closet in the hall, giving us the extra room she'll need to create a much more spacious bathroom.
17:50The new vanity will be much larger with more storage, and a porcelain slab shower, where that interior window used to be,
17:56will be a larger, much easier space for Blanca to step into.
17:59To make up for the storage we lost in the hall, we'll create a new linen closet
18:02by relocating some of that dead space in the bedroom closet.
18:05In the bedroom, we'll spoil Blanca with a dramatic glow-up.
18:09New mid-toned oak, laid in a sophisticated herringbone pattern, will pair beautifully with the existing hardwood in the hallway.
18:15Her new closet will feature state-of-the-art pull-downs, and will make accessible storage a breeze.
18:20And we'll add even more storage with a new built-in that marries functionality with clean lines,
18:25and custom details like specialty hardwood doors.
18:28On the opposite wall, we'll remove that covered window, and we'll clean up any water damage or mold issues,
18:33so Blanca can rest comfortably in a luxurious new adjustable bed that will help ease her back issues at the push of a button,
18:41while she watches her new big-screen TV that will be hidden in plain sight.
18:46So, you feel good?
18:48No.
18:50Good enough.
18:51I'm full of anxiety that you're going to screw this up.
18:53All right, fine, fine.
18:54Okay, I still don't know which one you are, so that's, you know, I feel terrible about that.
18:59Oh, no, no, no, I can't tell them apart.
19:01You guys can't tell them apart either.
19:03I see.
19:03Every time you're like,
19:04To John.
19:06John and Drew.
19:08Hmm.
19:12It's like working with a very large, hairy child.
19:19It's the nicest thing you've ever said about me.
19:21Straight up.
19:25One more.
19:25Get that empty spot.
19:27Here, I'll show you another trick.
19:28I love teaching.
19:29You don't need two hands.
19:30I've been doing this for hours.
19:32I've been editing this for days.
19:34This is why these don't switch a lot.
19:35And you show up when the cameras show up.
19:37Clean this up on the bottom a little bit, and I'll stick it to the line.
19:39Maybe you could stop yelling at me.
19:41Sort of.
19:42Is this too much?
19:43Well, you're kind of flattening it out still, so.
19:45And then, I'm not that, this is like when a parent is teaching a kid to do a skill,
19:49and you're like, really good job.
19:50Can I just have this?
19:51I just want to check something.
19:53You're amazing.
19:54Thank you, Dad.
19:54Let me just do a little.
19:55I did it better than anybody, right?
19:57You are the best.
19:58I've never seen it done so well.
19:59Oh, that?
20:00Oh, I see.
20:00I was being very delicate.
20:02Your last name is Property Brother, right?
20:06It's Scott.
20:06Everybody, I have two first names.
20:09Your last name is Scott?
20:10Yeah.
20:11And your first name is Scott.
20:12And you're Scottish?
20:14It seems.
20:14Is that too on the nose?
20:15A lot of hat on a hat there.
20:16Yeah, I've gotten to know him a little bit.
20:19The tall one.
20:22This space is, it feels a ton bigger than it did.
20:25Even without the window here, thank God that window's not here anymore.
20:29So that stone behind you will be on the sidewalls as well.
20:31And then we have this gorgeous tile over here.
20:33I like that there's, it's not just a light, light room.
20:35We actually have some darker tones that are giving us some personality.
20:38But it does feel massive.
20:39Taking that little closet space.
20:40Yeah.
20:41Expanded this beautifully.
20:42I'm going to get more tiles if you want to keep working your way up.
20:45I'm good.
20:45I'm fine.
20:46It's, yeah, it's going to look like a million bucks.
20:51It's going to look like a hotel.
20:52It makes me hate my own home.
20:56Put in the work and I never stop.
20:58Yeah, that's how you stay on top.
21:01Yeah, I'm absolutely going to screw this up.
21:04The carpet that was in this bedroom was in really rough shape.
21:07So we wanted to get it out, get the pad out, put in something elegant.
21:11But because we couldn't get a perfect match to the hallway,
21:13we wanted something that was going to complement that.
21:15The tone of this wood and the herringbone pattern makes it special.
21:18I love a herringbone pattern.
21:20And I'm not kidding.
21:21And I'm always sarcastic.
21:22But I'm not kidding.
21:23I love a herringbone pattern.
21:23I like a herringbone necklace.
21:25I didn't make the herringbone decision.
21:28No, I wanted to put it in a ballroom where you just dive into your bedroom and it's just
21:33like three feet deep in plastic balls.
21:35I'm just moving this glue around.
21:38Joel?
21:39Hello?
21:40Oh, hi, Natalie.
21:41Oh, Natalie?
21:43The Natalie?
21:44It's the Natalie, everybody.
21:46Let's hear it.
21:47Hello.
21:47Hello.
21:48My heart stopped for a second there.
21:50I didn't want to blow the surprise here.
21:51But it turns out Natalie had to come back a little early.
21:54Natalie, welcome.
21:56Welcome to your mom's home.
21:58She's been our secret inside source from the get-go.
22:01Her mom's still away for two weeks.
22:02Have you met our best laborer?
22:04Nice to meet you.
22:05Whoa, whoa, whoa.
22:06Hey, there's two of them.
22:08Hi.
22:09What's happening?
22:10Hello.
22:11Oh, my gosh.
22:11Natalie, what do you think?
22:12It's crazy how different it looks in here, honestly.
22:17What does it mean to you that Joel would do something like this for your mom?
22:21I'm not surprised that he would.
22:25He's always treated my mom and I as family.
22:29All right, enough of this.
22:30So I'm not surprised at all that he did it.
22:35I grew up as an only child.
22:37My mom raised me on her own.
22:39And so in terms of father figures, Joel was the first man in my life who I saw really show love and affection towards his kids.
22:49Nice.
22:49You just laid your first board.
22:51There we go.
22:51There we go.
22:52All right.
22:53And I think that he really set the bar pretty high for me in terms of what I would hope for, like, the father of my own kids one day.
23:01It sounds like you guys are family, so it's pretty cool to be able to be a part of this.
23:05Yeah, it's 20 years.
23:0620 years?
23:07More than half my life.
23:08Where the did the time go?
23:11Would you say you're an easy person to be around?
23:13Yes.
23:14Now, would you say he's an easy person to be around?
23:17Take some getting used to.
23:18I don't have a lot of experience with you, but every time we've asked you to show up, you have.
23:23Yeah.
23:24Oh, to show up?
23:26Every time we've asked you.
23:26Oh, I thought you said shut up.
23:28You have.
23:28I was like, I never saw something.
23:29So this is the new hall closet.
23:31I'm coming as well.
23:33Here I am.
23:33Yeah.
23:34This is the new massive bathroom.
23:37Go in.
23:38Oh, my gosh.
23:39She can actually, like, really move around now.
23:42Ever since she had, like, her major back surgery, like, it's not very easy to get around.
23:49Having all the space that she needs is going to be so helpful.
23:52It just needed a little extra love and a little extra contemplation.
23:56Losing the closet, giving it to the bathroom, now you have, like, truly a spotlight bathroom.
24:00She's retired, so why not, you know, have your home basically feel like an oasis?
24:06So when we're all done, this will be all built-ins for your mom, extra storage, the closet over here, a TV here as well.
24:13Wow.
24:13I wasn't sure if she was coming today.
24:15To see the look on her face is pretty, pretty cool.
24:18Natalie, don't tell anyone.
24:19I did get emotional.
24:20They tried to pull more out, and I said no.
24:22That's all you get.
24:24The longer you stay here, the more Drew will put you to work.
24:26What are you going to do?
24:27I'm getting out of here, you guys.
24:28You're just leaving?
24:29No, I was painting it.
24:30I'm painting the hallway.
24:31That's right.
24:31Careful.
24:32All right.
24:33Getting some clothes.
24:34See, now you're getting the hang of it.
24:36Uh, there's one time when jokes are really bad.
24:39When?
24:40When we have a delicate piece of porcelain that we don't have time to replace.
24:43So we're going to start to tilt it up?
24:45It's like if you break a veneer.
24:46It can be fixed.
24:48Classic.
24:49Right?
24:51We're dancing, oh, oh, oh, oh.
24:55We're singing, oh, oh, oh, oh.
24:58Ready?
24:59Yeah.
25:00Did I do it right?
25:02Here we go.
25:02Coming through.
25:03Grab that side.
25:04All right, here we go.
25:06We're just lifting.
25:08It's bit by bit.
25:09Did you guys even measure this thing?
25:11You want to type.
25:13There you go.
25:13Yep.
25:13Boom.
25:14All right.
25:15Oh, yeah.
25:16So we need to talk color, finishes.
25:18We kind of talked about concealing it before so the TV's not always visible.
25:22If we do that, we could go crazy on the cabinet doors, do something like a burl wood.
25:26So, yes, that's fancy wood, right?
25:29It is fancy wood.
25:30I see a lot of, like, you know, office furniture, beautiful desks, like executive desks made out
25:34of burl wood.
25:35Are you thinking painting or staining?
25:38I guess we're painting, right?
25:39I would paint these.
25:40Yeah.
25:40You just blocked me, dude.
25:42All right, yeah.
25:42Are you thinking, like, this is just, the show just looks so much better now.
25:46Can I have, okay, Drew, put your arms behind your back.
25:48We're not doing it.
25:48And then Joel's going to be your arms.
25:50So, Drew, tell me what you were going to say.
25:51You know, I think that we should paint out the cabinets and maybe do a featured door
25:56that can enclose the TV.
25:57Drew, you have a little something right here.
25:58My laptop.
26:00Okay, okay.
26:01Okay, so this door, the way that, so you're going to, we're going to hide the TV if she wants
26:06to close doors.
26:07So, two doors.
26:08We want to make sure that the doors aren't going to stick out like this.
26:10Yeah, it would collapse.
26:11So, it would be four panels, I think.
26:13How far will the panels stick out here?
26:15Like, that far?
26:16Each door is three feet.
26:17That means each one is going to be roughly 18 inches.
26:20So, it'll come out to about there.
26:21That's pretty good.
26:22That's not bad.
26:23I know that Blanca was concerned about storage space.
26:26Basically, there's more storage space now.
26:28I think it makes sense, though, that we'll keep the same color across these built-ins.
26:32Yes.
26:32So, maybe we keep it a little bit lighter over there.
26:34Yes.
26:35Maybe we put a light in there.
26:37Okay.
26:39Genius.
26:39You're welcome, Scott.
26:40Genius.
26:40I want to think of a couple of options for how we open the doors because we don't have
26:44the depth.
26:45And he's left.
26:46Oh, okay.
26:47Now we can get some work done.
26:48Okay.
26:54Shopping for some wood.
26:56But we're not just going for any wood.
26:57We're going to the experts, the best of the best when it comes to veneer products, and
27:01that's my buddy, Dan.
27:02Hey, how's it going?
27:03What's up, Drew?
27:04Hey, guys.
27:04Good to see you.
27:05Good to see you.
27:06Hard at work?
27:06Yes, yes.
27:07If you're thinking, like, of a woodworking shop, this is that on steroids.
27:11Oh, my God.
27:12This goes forever.
27:13Yeah.
27:13So, these are all your veneers?
27:14Exactly.
27:15Joel really wants a high-end boutique hotel feel for Blanca's new built-in, so we're making
27:19the bifold doors, which can be close to high of the TV, a focal point.
27:23Not only will these Burlwood veneers elevate the look of the doors, but it's going to give
27:27us that bespoke vibe at a fraction of the cost.
27:29When you're talking premium exotics, like, if we were talking, like, chunky, full, solid
27:34wood versus veneer, what's a cost difference that somebody would be paying?
27:38You know, it could be roughly 10 times the cost.
27:41You really get bang for your buck out of these sheets, just high-impact grain in a small
27:45area.
27:45We were talking about maybe doing the inside where the TV is as well as the outside, but I actually
27:49feel, if we just make the door really impressive and really beautiful, that's the best focus.
27:54Great.
27:55These are really nice.
27:56Is this, like, a birch, or what is this?
27:57So, this is a maple Burl here.
27:59Oh, maple.
28:00All these light options are going to be light with a finish on them, just different color
28:04tones.
28:05So, when you're looking at the Mapa, it really has a light and dark variation, but it just
28:10pops.
28:11The Burl just stands out, like, jewelry box grade.
28:14Can't go wrong with that.
28:16Yeah, I do like this.
28:17I really do.
28:18But maybe this feels almost a little bit more natural, a bit more simple, but you still
28:23have a lot of patterning with where all the knots are and whatnot.
28:25Awesome.
28:25No, and you're guaranteed that it's going to be one of a kind.
28:28At the end of the day, we didn't want too much detail.
28:30It's not a massive space.
28:31It's about a six foot by four foot.
28:33Okay, so we are set.
28:35All right.
28:35Lapa Burl, it will be.
28:37It's going to be gorgeous when we're done.
28:41Anywhere where you see pencil markings, we need to take it in just a tiny bit.
28:44I do this all the time.
28:46I think we're good.
28:49You feel good?
28:50Man, I am very good at construction.
28:53Watch.
28:53All right, here.
28:53We'll go inside.
28:54We'll carry it around to you.
28:55I'm protecting this front piece, guys.
28:58Oh, man.
28:59That slab was, like, 3,000 pounds.
29:02That's what I was told.
29:033,000?
29:04Yeah.
29:05Oh, guys, I got to go.
29:06I'll see you.
29:06Uh, there's one time when jokes are really bad.
29:10When?
29:11When we have a delicate piece of porcelain that we don't have time to replace.
29:14All right, clown, let's keep moving.
29:16All right.
29:18We're going to tilt that end of the hair.
29:19I'm not going to touch that little end there.
29:21All right, then we're going to back up the hair, right?
29:23So we're going to start to tilt it up.
29:25It's like if you break a veneer.
29:26It can be fixed.
29:28Flatten it.
29:29Okay?
29:30Right?
29:32You ready?
29:32Yeah.
29:33Okay.
29:34Okay.
29:35Careful.
29:36You okay?
29:36I'm good.
29:38I'm letting go on that side.
29:40One, two, three.
29:41I'm stepping out.
29:43I've done all I can.
29:45Get in there.
29:45Feels good.
29:47Nicely done.
29:49That was the most stressful thing I've ever done on camera.
29:53Blanca is going to love it.
29:55Do I think Blanca likes a clean, sophisticated slab?
29:59Who doesn't?
30:00I just want to kind of get the bottom just a hair.
30:02I'm pushing forward.
30:03Yep.
30:05You'll feel it kind of hit the mortar.
30:07There we go.
30:08It feels good.
30:09You know, if you secure the slab properly, then it will stay there and won't crush her
30:14when she's taking a shower.
30:16So, bachelor number one.
30:18Uh-huh.
30:18Can you tell me what our perfect renovation date would be?
30:22Well, I'm a big fan of porcelain walls.
30:25I think this is going to work out.
30:26You think?
30:27Hey!
30:28Look, we didn't break that little piece off, which I'm so happy we did.
30:31I don't want you to take this the wrong way.
30:33I definitely am going to.
30:35I had no faith in you.
30:36I thought that was being broken off for sure.
30:38Man, I feel like I'm talking to my parents 30 years ago.
30:42Uh, one question I do have.
30:44Mm-hmm.
30:44We can do slab across the back.
30:46Okay.
30:46Or we can break up the back wall and do a little bit of tile.
30:49I would like to use tile just to break up the, uh, you go porcelain and then you see
30:54a little, uh, tribute to the tile and then you have the tile here.
30:57I'm Joel McHale.
30:58Good night!
30:58She's out front.
31:02What am I doing here?
31:04Oh, wow.
31:05I know.
31:06You may think he's dead inside, but he's not.
31:09You know?
31:09Because when you see what he did, I think you'll be impressed.
31:12Oh!
31:13Oh!
31:14God, I don't mean cuts.
31:15I don't mean cuts.
31:16I don't mean cuts.
31:17Wow.
31:18Uh, we're making cabinetry, huh?
31:30Cabinetry 101.
31:31Who's the, uh, most inappropriate celebrity you've ever worked with?
31:35Ever met Joel McHale?
31:36Thank you very much.
31:39Hello.
31:40Well, welcome.
31:41Heavy countertops.
31:41How are you not ready yet?
31:43Oh, nice.
31:44Well, we're still, as you can see, we're working on this stuff.
31:47Tell us about what, like, I know that the thing she had before in the bathroom was very small.
31:53She had a very tiny kind of...
31:54What is that called in construction?
31:56A crappy vanity.
31:58Crappy vanity.
31:58Yeah.
31:59So even if you get something that's prefab, I want it to look custom.
32:02Right.
32:02So you can see here, dovetail joints.
32:05It really does look great, and I know that when I'm sincere, nobody believes me, and I understand that.
32:12But this, uh, does look great.
32:13And it should not go here, right?
32:15We should probably not put the toilet next to it and just call it a day out here.
32:18Let's put it in the bathroom.
32:20Yeah.
32:20Lynn, look at your back.
32:22Two under.
32:26Are you actually doing anything over here, or is it just...
32:38I just nailed these nails in...
32:39Hollywood work you're doing.
32:40Listen, this is...
32:41I'm good at this.
32:44Uh, hold on.
32:45Let me...
32:46It'll just give me a second.
32:47It's amazing how different it's all, and that the space looks much bigger.
32:51Like, the quality is amazing.
32:53It looks so good.
32:54Talk about a hotel bathroom better than any other celebrity got.
33:00Amazing.
33:00You hear that, Blanco?
33:02I'm gonna do this one just to speed things up a little bit.
33:04Yeah, I'm already done with this one.
33:06John and Drew really know what they're doing, and it's impressive to listen and watch.
33:11I hope none of them are seeing this.
33:13It may compliment them.
33:14It would be a disaster for me.
33:16Get over here.
33:16This is great.
33:17Okay.
33:18You can use these up and down.
33:19Have at it.
33:20This is very exciting.
33:21Check that out.
33:22Oh, yeah.
33:23This is nice.
33:26I would never leave this room, because I would just be playing with this bed.
33:30Just remember, tomorrow, 1 o'clock, out front.
33:34Don't forget.
33:35Don't be late.
33:35Great.
33:36I'm just gonna fall asleep here.
33:49I haven't talked to Joel, no.
33:50I talked to Natalie, so they're here.
33:52They're pulling up right now.
33:52Oh, okay.
33:53I think she's gonna love it.
33:56I hope she likes it, because we're in real trouble if she's like, what?
34:00Oh, who is this color scheme for?
34:04Oh, hi, guys.
34:05Hi, Joe.
34:06What am I doing here?
34:09I don't speak Spanish, Pianca.
34:12Good to see you.
34:13It's been a long time.
34:15Welcome back.
34:15So, Pianca, I know that you've been gone on vacation.
34:25Yeah.
34:26It's a long time.
34:26I've made a couple of improvements to your home.
34:29Oh, sÃ?
34:30Yes.
34:30Oh, wow.
34:32That explains all these cameras.
34:34Oh, okay.
34:37But I've also, I had some help from two very tall Canadians.
34:40Hello.
34:42Hello.
34:42Hello.
34:42Hello.
34:43Nice to meet you.
34:44It's Drew and John.
34:46Good to see you.
34:48Good to see you.
34:50Try not to tell the difference.
34:52I'm thinking, and I want to see how my house is.
34:56Yeah, she says she's really excited to see what it all looks like.
35:01This guy has a lot of love for you.
35:03Me too.
35:04She loves you too.
35:06She's seen our boys before they were born.
35:09Yeah.
35:10Yeah.
35:10Now they're 19 and 16.
35:12I love the kids.
35:14Yeah.
35:14She does.
35:15She really does.
35:17I'm not going to cry.
35:18You may think he's dead inside, but he's not.
35:22Because when you see what he did, I think you'll be impressed.
35:26Well, should we sneak a peek inside?
35:28All right.
35:28All right, here we go.
35:29You never know.
35:31If she doesn't like it, I'm going to run out as fast as I can.
35:37Oh!
35:39Oh!
35:41All right, Blanca.
35:46Well, should we sneak a peek inside?
35:47All right.
35:48All right, here we go.
35:49All right.
35:50Here we go.
35:52Oh!
35:54Oh!
35:56No puedo creerlo.
35:59Wow!
36:01Wow!
36:01Wow!
36:02Wow!
36:06Wow!
36:07Cambiaron mi casa, qué bonita!
36:10Wow!
36:11I know, Benito.
36:14Thank you, Joe.
36:15Thank you!
36:17I love you.
36:19I love you.
36:21Now I'm, now I'm, uh...
36:23Don't tell anyone.
36:26Wow.
36:28IncreÃble.
36:29No, no me imagine.
36:34Is it enough stories so far?
36:36Hasta me a sobrat.
36:37I've never seen that type of emotion from her before.
36:40Like, it just has never been something that she showed ever in her life.
36:45And when you don't want to stare at a TV...
36:48Oh!
36:48You can...
36:49Wow!
36:50Wow!
36:52I wanted it to look like a hotel.
36:54Yeah.
36:55Jonathan and Drew told me about this fancy wood called...
36:59Burlwood.
37:00Burlwood.
37:00Mapa Burlwood.
37:01Oh, wow.
37:02You get Burlwood.
37:03Well, you see your floors.
37:04Beautiful.
37:05It turned out really nice.
37:07Do you remember the window that was behind the bed?
37:08Oh, me that one?
37:09Oh.
37:10Gone.
37:12Oh, wow.
37:13The back and at the front.
37:14The whole bed adjusts.
37:16Let's give her some massage.
37:19Wow.
37:20Yeah.
37:23You deserve it.
37:28She loves the color.
37:29You like the color?
37:30Yeah.
37:30She loves it.
37:31I picked out that color.
37:32Oh.
37:33He picked out one.
37:34Oh, yeah?
37:35Oh, wow, Joe.
37:36Thank you, Joe.
37:37Y él tiene muchos amigos que pudo haber escogido, pero me siento muy agradecida con él porque me escogió a mÃ.
37:45I was going to do it for Timothy Chalamet, but his schedule was not great.
37:51We also cleaned up the storage over on that wall, and there was a hidden little alcove that was wasted space.
37:56Do you remember that?
37:57Uh-huh.
37:57That's now the whole closet.
37:59Oh.
38:00Yeah.
38:00Pull it all the way down.
38:08Yeah.
38:08This is all custom-made.
38:10Yeah.
38:10You can't, uh, you can't just walk in the store and buy that.
38:16She has everything at her fingertips now with the closets.
38:19And obviously, like, the bed is going to be so good for her back.
38:22A lot of time.
38:23She has, like, pinched her.
38:27She doesn't feel like this is real.
38:29I want you to tell me this, though.
38:31What is the one part of your home that frustrated you the most?
38:34Y el baño.
38:35The bathroom.
38:36The bathroom.
38:36Yeah.
38:37Do you want, Joel, I'll show you the bathroom?
38:38Yeah.
38:39I get giddy when people get to open gifts.
38:42Here we go.
38:44It's the best feeling.
38:45I was just so happy.
38:49No!
38:52Oh.
38:53Oh, my gosh.
38:54Look at that.
38:55Oh.
38:57The shower?
39:00That's your shower, Mom.
39:02Wow.
39:02So we reworked the whole thing just to give you a big footprint.
39:07She's like, what did, what, how did you guys do it?
39:10So that, this, where the toilet is, used to be the closet.
39:13So, yeah, so we basically took that closet, made that the toilet, and then created a closet
39:19out of the wasted space in the hall over here.
39:20Magic.
39:23I'm glad you like it.
39:26Yeah, I like it.
39:28With her back issues, it's a whole other situation now.
39:31The space is what is going to help her a lot.
39:34Look at this.
39:35Look how big it is.
39:36No.
39:38Yeah, this is where the window was.
39:39Yeah.
39:40Joel said that you wanted to keep the window.
39:42Wanted to make it bigger.
39:45These are the types of things that she would see, like, when she was cleaning houses.
39:49Wow.
39:51Joel, thank you.
39:52Oh, my gosh.
39:53It was nice to, like, see my mom's hard work get acknowledged.
39:59Thank you for being our Los Angeles grandma.
40:0320 years.
40:05Thank goodness.
40:06You've got function and style.
40:08That's what your mom did all this time.
40:09Yeah.
40:09No, seriously.
40:10And now I'm going to do a sight get.
40:12Oh, my God.
40:12Oh, my God.
40:14He's okay.
40:17When you get to be my age, 36, you know, you see the relationships that you've had over
40:25the years and which ones fall away and which ones stay and...
40:30That's me.
40:31Yeah.
40:32You know, she loved our boys.
40:34You can't buy that.
40:35You can't just make that up.
40:36That was the gift that Blanca gave us.
40:40All right, guys.
40:41Thank you desperately.
40:43And everyone always thinks I'm always being sarcastic.
40:46But without Blanca in our lives, we...
40:48I don't...
40:49I don't think we would have made it in Los Angeles.
40:51Everything's beautiful.
40:51Thank you, and yo.
40:53Yeah, yo también.
40:54Todo lo que yo viva voy a agradecértelo.
40:56She says she's going to appreciate this for the rest of her life.
41:00I love you, Blanca.
41:01Let's grab some drinks.
41:02All right.
41:03Celebrating drinks.
41:04Party.
41:04Let's have a drink.
41:05Well deserved.
41:06But I am going to use the toilet for the first time.
41:09No!
41:10No, no, no.
41:11No, he's not alone.
41:11Nobody's...
41:12That's right.
41:13I've been holding it for a while.
41:16Does anyone have a magazine?
41:19Take one, Mark.
41:20Welcome to Won't Make It to the Final Cut.
41:23All right.
41:23What's the most embarrassing moment you've ever had?
41:25I just my pants.
41:27So it's right now.
41:28Unusable!
41:29No, nothing.
41:31Why is there a snake in the tree?
41:33I think it's protection of some sort.
41:36I love this corner.
41:37This corner's great.
41:39All right.
41:39I'm going to get back to work.
41:41Sounds good.
41:42Wait, what are you working on?
41:44I thought the scene was over.
41:46And I'd like to point out that none of us really cried on this television show, so...
41:51We got you, Property Brothers.
41:52Oh, wow!
41:53Oh, wow!
41:54Wow!
41:55Wow!
41:57Wow.
41:58A little, yeah, just a little.
42:00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
