00:00This week we set a load to charming Dalesford, the block's new battleground.
00:12Where five awesome couples will build five awesome homes.
00:19Daz, Daz.
00:22Wow.
00:23Oh, boy.
00:24Let's go.
00:25It began with sunshine and rainbows.
00:32Welcome to the block.
00:37But it didn't take long before the storm rolled in.
00:41I just don't want to fail.
00:43Oh.
00:44Just a bit overwhelmed.
00:45You can't be waterproofing.
00:47I just think you can't waterproof.
00:48I've lost trust because you've just gone behind my back.
00:52I feel like I just got told off by my parents.
00:56One team is already planning a potentially block winning secret weapon.
01:00You've got this crazy idea.
01:02Talk to me.
01:03Dig a cellar.
01:04We'll try and do everything to make it possible.
01:07It's a gamble that could win us the show though.
01:10While other teams are trying to work out which way is up.
01:14We're amateur renovators.
01:16We need vanilla boards and we need them now.
01:19I think it's gone around the whole side of this point, hasn't it?
01:22That you're calling it vanilla board?
01:24And I've added a new twist to the competition.
01:27Every Sunday, Combank and I will pick a team
01:31who's doing the very best job at managing their budget
01:35and reward you with $10,000 cash.
01:40Ten grand.
01:41An extra ten grand per week.
01:43That is massive incentive.
01:45Wow.
01:46Oh, my sausage.
01:47Tonight, the bathrooms are starting to take shape
01:52but with three days to reveal...
01:54There's got to be an issue.
01:56...a bombshell rocks the block.
01:58We're going to start popping ties off the wall.
02:00Take all the ties off.
02:02Every tie off.
02:04We might not deliver a room.
02:06If it makes you feel any better,
02:07we'll have to go do it to someone else.
02:09Is there an issue that we should know about?
02:11Wherever it's on membrane, they've got to come off.
02:14It was an absolute disaster.
02:17Is that real?
02:19there's one person from the back of the stagnation.
02:21We're still in the middle unless it's on drin,
02:22it just depends.
02:23There's finally one whoossible media Aloopsia land
02:24with a complete
02:34and neutral tierra,
02:36that leads to another place.
02:37We'll see how many laps builds up the back
02:38in that moment.
02:39Hello?
02:40Hello?
02:41Hello?
02:43Happy Friday.
02:55Let's have a look at what we've got today to discuss.
02:59We've got lots of deliveries happening today.
03:02Be mindful that they have right of way to you.
03:06And that leads me on to cutting of cement sheet products and tiles,
03:10which is happening today.
03:11Let's make sure that tilers are using PPE.
03:16Other than that, be nice to each other and we'll see you on Saturday.
03:20Cheers.
03:36Yeah, so today my plan is to get all the tiling finished
03:40and start fitting off.
03:45We're making progress.
03:46We've got the floor down, so it's exciting.
03:49Hopefully have the walls on today.
03:51And once the tiles are grouted and dry,
03:55we might be able to do a bit of fit off.
03:57But that's ambitious, I think.
03:59So let's see how we go.
04:01We're going to go.
04:02We're going to go.
04:02We're going to go.
04:02We're going to go.
04:03We'll go.
04:06Smile for me, beautiful.
04:09I wanna see who you are.
04:15Four tiles got in last night, so they were able to set over night
04:19and we can throw a ladder in there now,
04:21so the plaster is up in the skyline, doing the sand.
04:25This bathroom reno is not much like anything else we've done before.
04:29Tight time frame and, yeah,
04:32the added complexities of being on the block.
04:43Riding is a big day.
04:44We have to finish our tiling.
04:48We have to do the grout.
04:51Plumber's electrical.
04:52Plumber's electrical.
04:53Taps, fittings, if we have time.
04:56And the plasters are going to be working here on the ceiling.
04:59So are you on track?
05:01Yes.
05:02In three capital letters, we are definitely on track at the moment.
05:18Morning, how are we?
05:20Good, Dan, good.
05:21How are we going here?
05:22Yesterday, there was an issue with our waterproofing and it's just frustrating.
05:28If that doesn't improve, it's going to have to be cut out and redone.
05:31Ooh, disaster.
05:32There was two corners of our waterproof that were spongy
05:36and they need to dry more.
05:40Yeah, that's dry.
05:41Yes.
05:42That is dry.
05:44The waterproof's all ticked off.
05:45Happy days.
05:46Great work.
05:47Let's go.
05:48Chuck a tile on.
05:49Happy days.
05:50Let's go.
05:51Thanks, Dan.
05:52Today, we need to get tiles on the walls and the floors
05:54because Graphico's coming.
05:56If they want to do their wall, the tiles need to go on.
05:59We're going to go up the wall, I hope to be told, by the end of the day.
06:04Doing good?
06:05Feeling better at this stage, but it might be if your curveball's coming,
06:09so you can never be fully relaxed.
06:12Water running down my face.
06:15Water running different ways.
06:17Water like a billion ways.
06:19After also hitting a waterproofing snag, House 4's Sunny and Alicia
06:23are the last house waiting for that all-important tick of approval.
06:27Dry?
06:28It's a little bit spongy here.
06:30So they managed to tile to mostly to the door and leave the tile out
06:34that was the problem with the waterproofing.
06:35So first thing is we get to pre-start and I ask to get that inspected
06:39so that we can get that last tile in and we can start throwing tiles on the wall.
06:43Sunny?
06:44Yeah, mate?
06:45It's nice and dry now, mate.
06:49Yeah, mate.
06:50Yeah.
06:51Yeah, that's sweet.
06:52Beautiful.
06:54Yeah, so Dan's finally given us a tick of approval with the waterproofing
06:56house 4, so now we can really charge on.
06:58Looking good, mate.
06:59Yeah, we're getting there.
07:00Yeah.
07:01We're...
07:02We're going all right.
07:04What's up?
07:06I'm just looking at the glue.
07:18Is it mastic?
07:19Mastic?
07:20Is that mastic glue?
07:21Yeah.
07:22Mmm.
07:23Yeah, we don't like mastic.
07:25Never dries on that.
07:27Waterproof?
07:28Waterproof like that.
07:29Yeah.
07:30Artics?
07:31Nice.
07:32Good.
07:33It's all right?
07:34Yeah.
07:35Sweet.
07:36While Foreman Dan's busy checking the tilers are sticking to the plan, Shelley and I are
07:39off to see what treasures are available in this year's Block Shop.
07:43Block Shop opens on Monday, Shelley.
07:44It's very exciting.
07:45Yes.
07:46We allowed in yet?
07:47Yes, we're allowed in here.
07:48Hello, Sarah.
07:49Hello, Scotty.
07:50Oh, coming soon.
07:51Hi, Shelley.
07:52Hey, Sarah.
07:53Hi.
07:54Coming soon.
07:55Are you coming in, Frankie, or are you staying outside?
07:56Hi, Frankie.
07:57You're welcome.
07:58You're opening on Monday morning?
07:59Yes.
08:00Bright and early.
08:01That's exciting.
08:02This year, we're working really closely with Freedom Furniture.
08:03And, um...
08:04And you've got lots of new artists to shoot.
08:06We do.
08:07But we also sell knickknacks, flowers, plants.
08:14Have they been coming up to the window?
08:16Yes.
08:17And I'm hoping that they'll be very good customers.
08:20And I've already got a sense from seeing them around site that they're going to do great
08:25things.
08:26Let's find out.
08:27Teams are well into their main bathrooms, which are located in the west wing of the house.
08:32Shelley and I are about to kick off the first walk around of the season.
08:36Shelley, Emma and Ben, they have done seven bathrooms in their previous life.
08:41We've definitely been training for the block for the last, what, seven years?
08:45Yeah.
08:46Our very first home we purchased was a tiny little shack.
08:49Yeah, that came up real nice for a budget reno.
08:51Our first one.
08:52Our first one.
08:53Yeah.
08:54And then we subdivided that house.
08:56Get up off of that thing!
08:58Built a brand new house on the back half of the block.
09:01It was perfect.
09:02We were living in the front house and building the one out the back.
09:04Get up off of that thing!
09:06And dancing you feel better!
09:08Get up off of that thing!
09:09It was great to see our vision come to life.
09:11Yeah.
09:12Welcome!
09:14This is my first house for the year.
09:16Very exciting.
09:17Oh my goodness!
09:18Is this house one?
09:19I love it already.
09:22Scotty and Shelley walking into our bathroom.
09:24Yeah.
09:25There's bananas.
09:26Is this real life?
09:27Yeah, it was cool.
09:28Okay, seven years in the waiting.
09:30Yeah, that's right.
09:31Here it is.
09:32Your first walk around.
09:33It is.
09:34Very exciting.
09:35You've got some tiles on there.
09:36That's good.
09:37Bit more progressed since last time you were here, Scotty.
09:39Nice.
09:40Look at this roof line.
09:41Okay.
09:42Yeah.
09:43What I love about this series, there's so many things I'm going to love about this series,
09:45the fact that you all have the same floor plan.
09:47It really comes down to your creativity in each and every room.
09:50Yeah.
09:51The married duo Emma and Ben are expressing their creativity with a bold green feature tile,
09:57a double vanity, sculptured nipped wall to frame their shower screen, and they have
10:02opened up their roof for a skylight that floods the room with natural light.
10:06So, how was your budget?
10:08Oh, we're close.
10:09We're close.
10:10Yes.
10:11The prize from Combank is not about whether you're under or over, it's about how you
10:15manage it.
10:16This year Combank is giving away ten grand each week to the team who best nails their
10:22budget.
10:23Add in a room win and that's twenty grand.
10:25Then imagine three tens from the judges and one savvy team could pocket fifty thousand
10:31dollars in one week.
10:33And this week's suggested room budget for the bathroom is twenty grand.
10:37It's about paying your trades on time.
10:39Right.
10:40It's about knowing how much you've spent.
10:42Right, okay.
10:43And not wasting money.
10:44Okay.
10:45Obviously if you went ten grand over, then you're not going to win the price.
10:47Yeah, of course.
10:48Okay.
10:49Okay.
10:50It's a spreadsheet if you want to have a look at it.
10:51I don't need to look at that.
10:52The fact you even have a spreadsheet.
10:53I'm impressed.
10:54Yeah.
10:55You guys are happy.
10:56Yeah, we are.
10:57They're happy all the time.
10:58What's your motivation?
10:59What's the point?
11:00Why are you here?
11:01Well, we always said that we just do it for the experience and make new friends and just
11:04learn along the way.
11:05Experience.
11:06It has been one already.
11:07Yeah.
11:08Yes.
11:09Loving every second of it.
11:10Keep that in mind.
11:11Yeah.
11:12Tell yourself that every morning when you wake up.
11:13Yeah.
11:14Hey, we wanted this.
11:15Yes.
11:16We're here for the challenge.
11:17Yep.
11:18Start each day as a new day and just accept what's coming your way.
11:21We'll leave it to it.
11:22Good luck.
11:23Thanks guys.
11:24See ya.
11:25Take it easy.
11:26See ya.
11:27Good.
11:28It was good to catch up with them and Shelly seemed to like the bathroom.
11:32I think they have high expectations for us.
11:35To deliver a pretty kick ass bathroom and hopefully we can.
11:42Han and Can.
11:44Han is like very emotional and precise and she's into it.
11:49Everything has to be perfect and if something goes wrong she gets very upset.
11:53Type A personality.
11:54It's the Manic Panic duo.
11:56Just make sure that's on the line.
11:58I like to achieve a lot and sometimes I like set myself like a lot of tasks in a
12:05day and I have a list.
12:06I feel like very fast paced.
12:07I like to just do a lot.
12:08Welcome to house two.
12:09Thank you very, very much.
12:10Are you ready for your first little chat?
12:11We would love to have a chat.
12:12Come up here Han.
12:13I know you have to stop work for five minutes.
12:14What are you doing?
12:15What are you doing?
12:16You're doing the tiling yourself now.
12:17Handy Hand is on the tools as well.
12:18I am.
12:19She's got her pads on.
12:20Look at you go.
12:21You look the part.
12:22You're Handy Hand and you can do it all.
12:23It's so challenging but like I'm loving it.
12:24How are you girls?
12:25Good.
12:26Really?
12:27Loving the thrill of the block and seeing it all come together and getting our hands dirty
12:30Absolutely.
12:31Yeah.
12:32Have you a couple Han and Ken are definitely getting their hands dirty this week.
12:37by wrapping their entire bathroom in floor-to-ceiling tiles showcasing a mosaic finger-tiled curved
12:41wall.
12:42You're Handy Hand and you can do it all.
12:43You're Handy Hand and you can do it all.
12:44It's so challenging but like I'm loving it.
12:45How are you girls?
12:46Good.
12:47Really?
12:48Yeah.
12:49Loving the thrill of the block and seeing it all come together and getting our hands dirty
12:53Absolutely.
12:54Yeah.
12:55Have you a couple Han and Ken are definitely getting their hands dirty this week by wrapping
13:00their entire bathroom in floor-to-ceiling tiles showcasing a mosaic finger-tiled curved wall.
13:06Yeah it's quite box modular and quite harsh from the exterior so we wanted you to come
13:13in and feel like it's a bit of a wellness sanctuary but curated vibe so like yeah we're having the
13:19beautiful arched door which is going to be a secret door that you push on and come into
13:23this bathroom and then we've got the gorgeous curved skylight.
13:28That's some hard work up there.
13:30And then in the corner we've got a scoot curved wall in the shower.
13:35And you've just sorry to interrupt you but are you tiling to the ceiling?
13:38We are.
13:39Floor to ceiling all wall.
13:40We are.
13:41You know it's Friday.
13:42We know it's Friday.
13:44We do have a lot of tiling to get done today but look as long as we get the walls done
13:49today we can start fitting in most of our bathroom appliances.
13:52How much have you spent?
13:53How much have we spent?
13:54Scotty I'm glad you asked.
13:57We have so far out of pocket 11,788 so we've got 8,000 remaining in the kitty.
14:04Cash.
14:05Cash.
14:06You've included the tiler in that?
14:07Yes.
14:08We have.
14:09Okay.
14:10Get tiling.
14:12We will.
14:13Lots to do.
14:14Are you worried about finishing?
14:15I have full confidence in my team.
14:17I am not worried.
14:18And that's way behind you.
14:19Way behind.
14:20Yeah.
14:21And if they're doing that feature tile around that's going to take some effort.
14:25They've got one tiler.
14:26Like I know house four or five.
14:28They've got four tilers.
14:29Yeah.
14:30Right.
14:31And they're going floor to ceiling.
14:32It's going to be a tough going to finish.
14:33Yeah.
14:34Ah!
14:35Ah!
14:36Ah!
14:37I really like this facade.
14:49This is the handmade brick one.
14:50Oh, yes.
14:51Isn't it?
14:52Yes.
14:53Sonny and I met 14 years ago.
14:57We've been married 10 years now.
15:00We get along pretty well.
15:01We're sort of, you know, I think we're lucky compared to a lot of married couples.
15:05I think that bicker, we bicker.
15:07We bicker?
15:08Oh my God.
15:09You should have also said, hey Leash, when you fling the door open.
15:12I can be called all the names under the sun.
15:14That doesn't faze me.
15:15I know she's a firecracker.
15:16It's funny to watch.
15:18Like it's, the melt is quite enjoyable from the sidelines sometimes.
15:22So how are you settling in?
15:24We're going good.
15:25Well, we're up again.
15:26Moving up and down and left and right.
15:27Yeah.
15:28They're having a few blues.
15:29Oh yeah.
15:30Just amongst themselves.
15:31Yeah.
15:32Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:33Is this a normal love language?
15:34It's nothing new for us.
15:35Stock standards.
15:36Yeah, we're used to finding.
15:37Yeah.
15:38Arguing.
15:39Arguing.
15:40Arguing.
15:41Bickering.
15:42Our fiery Gold Coast couple are creating a moody look with warm chocolate floor to ceiling
15:44tiles in their sleek screenless wet room.
15:47Showcasing a luxe double vanity, brass fittings and a skylight to let the light pour in.
15:54Are you stopping the tiling there?
15:55Yes.
15:56And this is painted?
15:57Yes.
15:58No tiling here?
15:59There is tiling, yeah.
16:00Yeah.
16:01Okay.
16:02But we're going to paint.
16:03Because you've obviously got the facade with the hand tweak.
16:04Yeah.
16:05It's super important to have that in mind in every room that you do.
16:07Yeah.
16:08Absolutely.
16:09You can't just get the continuity and styling obviously.
16:11Yeah.
16:12But the livability factor.
16:13Yeah.
16:14How's your budget?
16:15We've got waterproofing, tiling in.
16:17Oh, you've got tiling.
16:18I do a square metre rate on my tiling.
16:20Yeah.
16:21So you measured it up and you said, right, this is what it's going to be.
16:24Yeah.
16:25We want to be under budget because we need that cash.
16:26I need to be.
16:27You do.
16:28Righto, we're moving on Shel.
16:29Thank you so much.
16:31I'm so glad to see you here.
16:32Yes.
16:34I cannot wait to see you again next week.
16:35I know, me too.
16:36Thanks.
16:37See you later.
16:38See ya.
16:39Bye.
16:40Oh, that went way better than what I thought.
16:42Oh, I got sweatpants.
16:43I mean, there was no negative, so I feel good.
16:46Yeah.
16:47New house just caught the keys, then we're popping and feel the breeze, yeah.
16:51Look up, baby, you'll see when I'll be brand new around me.
16:56Race tracks here.
16:57All the goodies for the bathroom might be in there.
17:00Yeah.
17:01How exciting.
17:02It's weird seeing your name on stuff.
17:03Yeah.
17:04Guys, I got presents.
17:05Here we go.
17:06Who wants one?
17:07I'll grab one, thank you.
17:08Me too.
17:09Cooler.
17:10Orange coming up.
17:11Guys.
17:13Here we go.
17:16I'm gonna have one.
17:17Yes.
17:18Hi, July.
17:19Oh, they are delicious.
17:20So, the two coppers from the Pilbara.
17:21Yeah, jeez, they're a long way from home.
17:22How hot is it today?
17:23Oh, it's 46 degrees today, so it's not...
17:24Do you get used to the heat?
17:25I don't know.
17:26No, you don't get used to the heat.
17:27No, you don't get used to the heat.
17:28It is relentless, but for 10 months of the year, you'll cop your 40s to 45, sometimes
17:56gets to 50. It's a scorcher out here but you cop no wind as well in the middle of the desert so
18:02you just gotta get through it. How do you deal with the heat? When we get time off together we'll
18:07go out to some like watering holes. A lot of beautiful country around there's a lot of exploring
18:11to do. It's hard to leave. This is lovely. Thank you. Yes that is beautiful. And how many layers are
18:25you're wearing? Two or three with the shirt. And a beanie. And he's got a long sleeve under that
18:29black one's long sleeve. It's like 30 degrees outside. I'm shivering too. Are you? Yeah. You walk
18:34up out of the caravans it's it's 13 degrees 14 degrees and I'm just. It's too cold. All right
18:40well hopefully you climatise quickly because it's going to be a long road. I love what you've got
18:45going on here. I love the French pattern here on the floor. With French pattern tiles on the floor
18:50Britt and Taz are leaning into a soft organic design. A neutral floor to ceiling tiles in their
18:56curved red area. A rounded vanity and shower screen showcasing their bathroom with Graphico wallpaper.
19:03This is looking very country. Are you stopping the tiles there? I got Graphico going there.
19:08Graphico on the wall. Graphico. What sort of Graphico? It's like a it almost looks like a
19:12bit of a Venetian plaster concretey texture and it's going to be warm to complement the tones.
19:17Very nice yeah. These tiles are beautiful. Yeah. I love this. Thank you. I think Shelley loved it.
19:22Like we've been watching Shelley for years so we can sort of say she was like oh I love the tiles
19:28oh the colours are nice. So I think she actually genuinely liked it. Because you can usually tell
19:32when Shelley doesn't like it she'll give you a lot of arms or she'll be very quiet or yeah she'll be
19:38oh I'm not sure about that. I think she liked it yeah. What do you think has been your biggest challenge
19:43so far? I think just learning everything. Just not knowing what a vanilla board compared to a vanilla
19:49board is. Oh listen I've got I've got I've got a present for you. What have we got? You know
19:53everyone's been making fun of you? Yes everyone has been making fun of me. Well they shouldn't
19:57because it does exist. Vanilla board. It's a vanilla board. I can't make fun of you now. Vanilla board.
20:12Scotty brings out two vanilla slices on a bit of plywood. Vanilla board. How's your budget?
20:18Actually really good. Don't say really good. No really good. Okay well it's on track. We'll say
20:22on track. We're definitely going to spend 17 and a half. Right. But we're not going to we're not
20:27gone past 18 and a half at the moment. Yeah that's good. Well enjoy your vanilla sauce. I'm going to
20:31absolutely smash the vanilla. Thank you Shell. Thank you so much. No problem. Thanks Scotty. No worries.
20:35Thank you. Thank you my pal. Thank you Scotty. Yeah we've got a problem. This glue is not compliant. We
20:48know this because I've walked in before and we've pulled tiles off the wall. So you're saying
20:53that I have to pop these tiles off the wall. Yeah. But I'm saying I don't.
21:09Well now you know the boys right. They're best friends. Yes. Yes. Friends not lovers. Correct. Yes. But
21:14they probably love each other. They do. Oh no they do. Very much so. They're very tight. I enjoy scaring you a lot.
21:20What are you doing? Ah! Ah! Ah! You f***ing stupid boys. Ah! Ah! Having a gay best mate is highly recommended.
21:34Um mate I bloody love you and you're a huge part of my life whether I like it or not. I can't get rid of
21:41you. Nah. It's like when Alyssa first got brought into this situationship. The first time I met her she's
21:49looked at us and gone you two come as a package don't you. And we were like yep. We're a thruple.
22:00There's nothing. There's nothing. Oh gents. Hello. It's like choosing the right blonde. Oh isn't it just.
22:06Boys have you finished tiling? The walls yes but still got to finish off the floors later on. Right.
22:13Okay. Well the wall tiles are all up that's great. Yeah. Absolutely. What's your layout?
22:18Shelley I'm glad you asked. Our barber and hairdresser team are blending form and function this week
22:24choosing a fluted shower screen and a slimline bath to open up the shower space. With gunmetal tapware that
22:31pops against the neutral palette. A spectacular ceiling void that draws your eye up to the skylight.
22:38Fantastic. I love your muted palette. This I think is a master stroke. You're going really well boys.
22:46For a couple of hairdressers. Yeah I know. We've never done anything like this. Look I doubted you.
22:52We heard it in your tone so we took that on board so we're just you know we're working extra hard.
22:57We're two hairdressers designing a bathroom. It's been a tough week and you know we're
23:02Friday afternoon and we've got some good positive pat on the bum. Oh good boy. Uh Cheryl these guys
23:10have got a secret weapon. We have to whisper. Already? So windows open. Already? Yes and it's a
23:15corker right? Pardon the pun. Yes it's they're going to build a wine cellar out there underneath the
23:24ground. Dig it in and build it and then put a lid on it with stairs going down. We're proudly
23:28south of the shore. So we hope we're not digging ourselves a hole but we want to dig ourselves a
23:32hole. Yeah. And boys I have the approval is this close. So we're waiting on a call. Yeah. Right so
23:38we haven't got that call yet. So obviously great idea about the secret weapon. Where is the budget
23:42coming from? Well hopefully we're going to pull the budget out of this and a bit of uh out of this.
23:48Out of this? Out of this. It's a risk. This is the jeopardy because because you've got to start.
23:53They've got to start now to do it and therefore but they haven't got extra money at the moment.
23:57So if they pull the lever on this that means they definitely have to win 50 grand. If we get
24:03approved this wine cellar we could win the block mate. Like it's a game changer. So seemingly it's
24:12the easiest block you've ever given them but when you think about actually having to landscape all of
24:17this. Yes. They've got to start now. To help them get started Shelley and I went shopping earlier today.
24:25We're going to give these pots away starting today. Right. And it's based on effort. Love it. Yes.
24:30Because by the end of the competition obviously they've got no budget. Landscaping week usually
24:35comes last. They're running really low so they can actually stockpile their plants throughout the
24:40series. Yes. I like that. While doing our walk arounds I cooked up a quick quiz to help me pick this
24:46week's pot plant winner. One word answer or quick answer is what I'm after. Who is the hardest worker
24:53here on the block? Probably Han. Han. Good answer. Han. I'd say Han. Han. Han. Everybody has said Han. Yeah.
25:08Including Han herself. Who is the hardest working person here on the block? I'd say me.
25:16With a unanimous decision Han has earned the title of this week's hardest worker. And her reward?
25:22Five plants of her choice. Let's have a look around. But there's a height
25:26limit. Our human measuring stick. Sherwin. On your tippy toes please. What do they call this? An
25:31espalier. This is like... Right there. Hang on. Can we make this one work? Yes. Yes. Yes.
25:37We made it work. That's it. That's one of them. I will have one of those. Stick her on that. Thank you.
25:42I'm the hardest worker for the week. I'm absolutely stoked. It means we get plants. Pot plants.
25:48One, two, three, four. You've got one to go. Plans aren't cheap and we've got a lot of ground to cover.
25:56All right. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you for shopping. Thank you.
25:59And congratulations. Thank you. Now get back to work. Thank you. Yes. But yeah,
26:04didn't expect that. It's a nice surprise. A nice little treat for a Friday.
26:12So Scott and Shelley come check out our house, our bathroom, and they really like it, which is great.
26:17They gave us some really good feedback, and they disappear, and Matt and I are regrouping,
26:21and they turn around and come back in with some news. Hey, fellas. Oh, yes. Oh, dear. Oh, no. No.
26:32I just had a phone call. His arms are crossed. It's not good. Arms crossed. We were terrified,
26:40thinking it was going to come in bad news. Now, fellas. Now, fellas. I've got one thing to say to you.
26:44You got approval. In principle. In principle, but it's close enough for me.
26:52We need $50,000. We've got approval from the council to go ahead with said...
26:58White seller. How are we going to pay for it? Look, it's week one. It's a long journey.
27:04Well, congratulations and commiserations all in one. Thank you. See you. Well done, Scotty.
27:08See you. Oh, wow.
27:12I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
27:18This is huge. This could honestly, this one little thing could change everything,
27:24anywhere else to block. All these houses are the same, but no one's got a wine salon.
27:28Game on, mole. You've been wanting to say that for a long time.
27:33Mate, it is now. Game on.
27:43It's Friday afternoon on the block and everyone's bathrooms are taking shape.
27:50But beyond the styling and the sweat, it's easy to forget that the block, at its core,
27:55is a real estate competition. And on day one, Marty Fox reminded our blockheads what that means.
28:02I urge you guys, don't do what contestants did last year, and they left it for weeks
28:06to speak to real estate agents. You need to do that as quickly as possible. You need to understand
28:12exactly what will resonate. It's going to set you apart.
28:14With that in mind, Han and Kan locked in an agent on their first day.
28:18Natalie, lovely to meet you.
28:20I'm actually nice to meet you. Nice to meet you too.
28:22Yeah, so the real estate agents are built property here in Dalesford.
28:26And it wasn't long for others to follow suit.
28:29We got big in scot. I do not have a real estate yet.
28:33Perfect. You've come to the right place.
28:35Cheer up. Thank you.
28:37Before we left to start this journey, I had locked in an auctioneer, Damien Cooley.
28:42All done. Sold. Congratulations.
28:45He's done numerous auctions. Very excited.
28:49Emma and Ben have taken a different approach and have called a block pro.
28:53Gian. Hello.
28:56Hey, how are you?
28:57With Gian and his wife Steph being the most successful winners in block history.
29:01At five million, the new winner of the block.
29:051.65 million. Profit. Makes sense to get some winning words of wisdom.
29:11We obviously had a great experience with our agents who were Ray White Sunbury.
29:15We really benefited from having someone that had done the block before and understood the game.
29:21Yeah.
29:21I don't think you can underestimate how important that would be. Have a few chats.
29:26And Robbie and Matt went purely off good vibes.
29:29We were looking for real estate agents and during the parade, we went around the corner.
29:33And then there's Kim McQueen, the queen of Dalesford.
29:35The queen of Dalesford.
29:36There she is. There's a girl.
29:38She's in there and she's waving at us and we're like, that is our lady.
29:49With their real estate agent locked in and council approval for their secret wine cellar,
29:55Robbie and Matt have hit the road.
29:56We're driving around to get a few little knick-knacks for styling and we decide to call Kim.
30:02Kim speaking.
30:03If it isn't Kim McQueen, the queen of Dalesford.
30:08Our real estate agent. And what does she say?
30:11You won't believe it. I am selling a house that has an underground wine cellar.
30:17Oh, Kimmy, please.
30:19Yes. Why don't you come and have a look at it?
30:22Oh, hi. There she is. Hi.
30:25It's hugely important that we explore Dalesford and the area to get some inspo.
30:29Like, we're picking up a lot. Every drive, every time we look out into a property,
30:34we're picking up little one percenters here and there.
30:35This is great.
30:35Yeah, it's fantastic, isn't it? It's a beautiful house.
30:43The whole house is built of shipping containers.
30:46There's an underground shipping container cellar. Come and have a look.
30:49Let's have a look.
30:50Let's have a look.
30:53After you.
30:54All right.
30:54Wow.
31:03As soon as I saw it, our ideas just started flowing.
31:07Oh, feel this.
31:09Yeah.
31:10This is exactly the size I'm thinking.
31:13Even this with the rusted steel work.
31:16Yeah.
31:16I love that.
31:17So we are so lucky.
31:19Like, Rob came up with this idea because every house is exactly the same.
31:23Yeah.
31:23So they're comparing everything to the most minute detail.
31:26But this idea will set us apart completely from the rest of the competition.
31:30It's about finding that point of difference, isn't it?
31:32Absolutely.
31:33And Dalesford being a very cool climate town, tourist town, everybody loves their wine.
31:38They're looking for luxury.
31:39They're looking for experiences within the home.
31:43It's a great idea and I think it will be the winning house.
31:47I thought it was going to be really steep.
31:49I did too, actually.
31:50But it wasn't.
31:50And I like the idea of it not being steep because of the elderly can get down there, like yourself.
31:55So rude.
31:56But even the ceiling was, you know, quite high.
31:59And, you know, for someone that, you know, is medium height like yourself, you know,
32:03he had heaps of room.
32:04I'm standing on the slope now.
32:06Let's go.
32:07All right, quick.
32:08I'm just going to take this.
32:10I'm going to take this.
32:11Rob, quick, grab something.
32:12Let's go.
32:12Everything on Friday afternoon.
32:23It's going great.
32:24It's going great.
32:25We were in such a good spot.
32:26Probably up here.
32:27It's about halfway up that time.
32:28We can sort of see.
32:29We're happy.
32:30Then Aiden walks in.
32:32Aiden.
32:34Grim Reaper at this point walks in to tell us very, very bad news.
32:38Tile's put the last tile on the wall and Aiden's come in and said,
32:50Yeah, we've got a problem.
32:53What's the drama?
32:54The mastic.
32:55D2 mastic?
32:57It just can't be used where membrane is.
33:01Mastic D2 is a pre-mixed tile glue that the 9 and 6 boys don't like contestants to use on the block.
33:08As it takes seven days for it to fully dry.
33:11Too slow for the block and it's trapped moisture can dislodge tiles.
33:15This glue is not compliant.
33:19The only reason we know this is because I've walked in before and we've pulled tiles off the wall.
33:24Oh, mate, I've seen it happen.
33:25I've got a fixed job.
33:26It happens all the time.
33:26I know that.
33:27And I've got to fix those jobs.
33:28I know what you're saying.
33:30But that's because they've used a product that literally tells you not to use it on a membrane.
33:33The last time I stopped someone using it, it was D2.
33:36Yeah, oh, you stopped them using it.
33:38Yeah, okay.
33:39Yeah, no, they'd already used it the day before.
33:41Yeah.
33:41Right?
33:42And we said you can't use that.
33:43It was D2.
33:44Right.
33:44Right?
33:45And we went and popped tiles off the wall.
33:46Right.
33:47Okay, but I know what you're saying, but I've never had it failed.
33:51Our tiler, who's been in the job for 20 years, has said this product is and can be used in
34:00waterproof areas as listed on a bit of paper that he had.
34:04It says here, in the case of D2, the product information does permit binding on membranes,
34:09provided the tiles are porous.
34:11That's what it says right here.
34:12Yeah, I know.
34:13So why are you saying that I can't?
34:15But it says on the D2 instructions, it also says it's a problem.
34:18So my tiler's got a bit of paper, Aiden's got a bit of paper, both say contradicting things.
34:24So you're saying that I have to pop these tiles off the wall.
34:29Yeah.
34:29But I'm saying I don't, because they're not saying that I do.
34:32It says it might work on wholly porous tiles.
34:34Yeah.
34:35Right?
34:36A porous tile, such as ceramic, has tiny holes like a sponge that can absorb the glue,
34:42make it stick fast.
34:44But a non-porous tile, like a porcelain glazed tile, stops the glue from absorbing.
34:49And that's not good.
34:52What are they?
34:53Just a ceramic?
34:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:57Sweet.
35:01They're porcelain.
35:03What's that?
35:03They're porcelain.
35:04They're porcelain glazed.
35:06Yeah, they're porcelain glazed.
35:06But they're porcelain, so they're not porous.
35:08I can't knock my tiler's for the work that they put in.
35:12They've used these products forever, but it's not compatible for what nine and six point.
35:19Porcelain is not highly porous.
35:21The argument that they're highly porous so it might work is not going to happen because they're porcelain.
35:26It's not the right , unfortunately.
35:30Right.
35:31On this job site, nine and six are the boss.
35:35Where do we go from here, I guess, is what Taz needs to know?
35:38Do you want to start popping tiles off or?
35:43Take all the tiles off?
35:44Yep.
35:44It's on the membrane, yeah.
35:45Aidan's made the call that every tile on the wall has come off.
35:57Every tile on a Friday night.
36:01All the tilers himself just sat in a bathroom, fully tiled, ready for grout.
36:10Just dead silence.
36:10You put in the hard work, you see all your beautiful work off on the walls.
36:19And they say you've got to tear it down.
36:26And they say you've got to tear it down.
36:31It was tough.
36:42With only 40 hours to go until room reveal, house three faces a nightmare.
36:47After using the wrong glue on their tiles, every freshly laid tile has to come back off the wall.
36:58You put in a good shift, you put in the hard work, you see all your beautiful work off on the walls.
37:02And they say you've got to tear it down.
37:05If it makes you feel any better, I'm about to go do it to someone else.
37:08Yeah, Ado comes past at three, four o'clock in the afternoon.
37:17Oh, hey guys.
37:18Hey guys.
37:19Who's been using the D2?
37:22I don't even know what D2 is.
37:26Where's the D2 been used?
37:28The wall glue, the mastic.
37:31And the tile has got this funny look on their head.
37:33Just above any water line.
37:38That's all.
37:39On membrane?
37:41Oh, look.
37:43The membrane was probably to maybe a few, so maybe two rows.
37:53I'm just looking at the glue.
37:54Is it mastic?
37:56Mastic.
37:59Is that mastic glue?
38:02Yeah, we don't like mastic.
38:04Never dries on that.
38:05Waterproof.
38:06I bought the glue.
38:07I bought the grout.
38:08I bought the tile.
38:09There's literally everything here that they needed.
38:11So at some stage, the boys have been using what we've supplied.
38:14And then at some stage during the day, they've changed to...
38:17Their own.
38:18Their own.
38:19In a quick turnaround like this, it doesn't work.
38:22Because normally you would tile it and you would leave it for a few days and the glue would go off.
38:26We're tiling.
38:27We want to dry out straight away.
38:28And then it gets no air and it would just stay sloppy forever.
38:32If the tiles are porous ceramic, house four are good.
38:36If they're porcelain, they're in trouble.
38:38Yeah, they're porcelain.
38:41They're porcelain though.
38:42That's the problem.
38:44Unfortunately, wherever it's on membrane, they've got to come off.
38:48Time to take the tiles off the wall.
38:55Oh, it was an absolute disaster.
38:58How are you doing about that?
39:01How can you feel about it?
39:03Not happy, but we still got time.
39:06So we just do what we got to do.
39:07Pull them off and fix it.
39:08Simple.
39:17The D2 out there, the mastic, wherever you use that.
39:23Everywhere, because it's ceramic.
39:24It's not on the membrane.
39:33Really?
39:34Yeah, you're right.
39:37This ceramic changed the situation because it sucks the moisture out.
39:41Are they ceramic?
39:42Yeah, they're ceramic, yeah.
39:43These aren't porcelain.
39:46Um, have you got the tile?
39:47Yeah, there's a couple of holes in there, yeah?
39:49Yeah, yep.
39:57Leave me with me.
39:58I'll be back.
40:14Just got a bit of an issue.
40:15Where's Emma?
40:16Right, come on.
40:17Hey, Em.
40:18Yeah?
40:19Can you come check this curved wall out?
40:23I just don't know how we're going to do it.
40:24I can't really cut these on the curve.
40:26And the miter.
40:27And miter it all at the same time, if you get what I mean.
40:32To miter a tile, you cut the edges of two tiles at matching 45 degree angles
40:38and fit them together to create a seamless edge.
40:41But doing this on a curve will leave small gaps.
40:45See that there?
40:47Yeah.
40:48Look, that's going to have, look, I'm not going to be able to put anything there.
40:51Oh, I know.
40:52Because that there's going to go with a miter.
40:57Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
40:58Okay.
40:59Don't miter them.
41:01Oh, it's still going to look funny with a grout line.
41:05Trying to cut it on the curve with these tiles.
41:07I know, yeah.
41:08We're doing a template, map it out now.
41:10Oh, they've got an arch, but with the smaller tiles, it's sort of making it a bit hard
41:19because we've got little gaps everywhere.
41:20So it's just going to be a hard thing to get done, especially when we've only got a few hours left.
41:28We've got to do it.
41:29We've got to just commit to it.
41:30No worries.
41:31I can only do what I can do though, mate.
41:35Yeah, no, no, no, I'm hearing you, but we'll take with what you can do.
41:39Righto.
41:45At house two, Hannon Cairns' big secret weapon this week is a curved wall covered in finger tiles.
41:51And that secret weapon is about to backfire.
41:54Those finger tiles, the mosaics, we're not going to be able to put them on the flat section of the curved niche.
42:04Why?
42:04Because it just doesn't work going around the corner with the miters and with that.
42:09Oh, it hurts too.
42:11No, no, no.
42:11But if you put them the same as the floor, use the floor tile.
42:15No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
42:17That's going to look so...
42:18See, it's literally impossible, it doesn't work the other way.
42:23It defies physics.
42:25I'm coming up now.
42:26I'm coming back now.
42:28Can't do the mosaics how we wanted to, so yeah, I just need the details and go find out what's happening.
42:36Yeah, quite stressed and yeah, I just want to sort it out.
42:45I'm confused.
42:47So basically, we were going to use these.
42:49Why can't we?
42:51Because when you get to here, the only way you can do it is fan it.
42:57Each matchstick basically lines up with the face, but then when you get to the back though,
43:04it's going to be a little bit open, like a fan.
43:08You'll have huge gaps, but then the back wall's not going to line up either.
43:14Fanning out the tile on a niche wall will result in wide grout lines when the tiles get to the back
43:19of the wall, which also means the tiles will not line up.
43:23The other option is to replace the finger tiles with the floor tiles.
43:27Show me what it looks like when you fan it.
43:29Like, if you get the concept.
43:33You can snip the mesh, can't you?
43:35Yeah, yeah.
43:36It's what happens if you snip the mesh and just do it individually.
43:47That's fine, bud.
43:49No one's going to notice that when she got grout in.
43:54Back here, Tim, looking at that, I can't even see it's fanned out, bud.
43:59Yeah, it has to be that, mate.
44:04Yep.
44:06That looks so, so good.
44:08And I think if it didn't do that, it would look f***ing good.
44:13Yeah, yep, righto.
44:16Once the grout's in, you won't even know, so if you're okay with that, bud.
44:20Oh, whatever you girls want.
44:23Tim takes such pride in his work, and he doesn't work
44:28with anyone else because he wants to maintain control over it and ensure it's perfect.
44:33I think most of the other houses had three, four tilers in their, in their bathroom.
44:37The front looks really, really good.
44:39It's just making the top look as good as the rest, so.
44:44Does that take a lot of time, that stuff?
44:46Yeah, yeah, yep.
44:51Yeah, a lot of time.
44:58I mean, I just like to get a bottle of wine and take it back to the caravan and sit outside
45:16and just have a glass of vino.
45:17Do you want to do that right now?
45:24Ceramic changed the situation because it sucks the moisture out.
45:27Are they ceramic?
45:28Yeah, they're ceramic.
45:29Leave it with me.
45:29I'll be back.
45:30Let's go have a look at our amazing room.
45:43See how that's going.
45:46This is wild.
45:49Wow.
45:50It's so sick.
45:52So you guys have just returned from a shopping trip.
45:55You seem ecstatic with the progress and how it's looking.
45:57Mm-hmm.
45:58So there's no issues?
46:00Not that we can see so far.
46:02Have you plans an issue?
46:03Is there meant to be?
46:04Is there an issue?
46:05Have you spoken to your tilers lately?
46:07Yeah.
46:08Looking at them right now.
46:09Everything's great.
46:10There's no issues.
46:15Is there an issue?
46:16Is there an issue that we should know about?
46:20It's good or bad?
46:22It's a bit of both.
46:24Yep.
46:25Those tiles, yes, probably fine.
46:27Yep.
46:28They're porous.
46:30But because we've tiled and grouted it, not fine.
46:33I think the easiest way out of it is to pull out the grout lines on the stuff that was laid
46:40today if it can be done.
46:43Luckily for the boys, they've used a ceramic tile, which can extract the moisture and stick fast.
46:49But for the moisture to extract, it needs to have airflow.
46:53So the grout needs to be removed for the glue to dry.
46:56I know, but it might not be that bad.
46:59We get back and we find out that has hit the fan.
47:04And one of our sections in our bathroom...
47:07just said that we have to scratch just from here to this whole wall.
47:13Okay, and then that wall and that one?
47:15Just a little bit there and then here, but...
47:16We just had to get some air to the glue.
47:18So we just had to scrape out a little bit of the grout.
47:22Maybe extra two hours work.
47:24But compared to everyone else, we got away with murder.
47:27It's a lot better than it ran out.
47:29Everyone's ripped their bathrooms apart.
47:30Oh, no .
47:32Has that happened? Is that real?
47:41We were getting kicked off site at 10pm.
47:44We could have stopped at six o'clock and just said,
47:46let's just give it a day. Let's everyone cool off.
47:49But that's not how we operate.
47:51We can go home and not deliver a bathroom.
47:59Or we can just roll up our sleeves and get stuck in.
48:03Brit, himself, all the tilers started ripping tiles off the wall.
48:12It's going to be scraped for the master golf.
48:13Right, okay.
48:18We scraped those tiles and we were able to start putting some back on the wall.
48:21Yeah.
48:27It was a rough day.
48:30Just means we're going to have to work very, very hard tomorrow.
48:32But we've got till midnight tomorrow.
48:34Yeah, we will not stop because that's not an option.
48:38I felt like Mother Hubbard.
48:52I had to go out and scrub all the glue off the tiles.
48:57You do one and I'll just hand wash.
49:02That is what it is.
49:03Just charge forward.
49:05It's just so deflating.
49:07Like, all week, you just fight and you fight and you fight.
49:10And then you're coming to Friday and you're thinking, this is just not going to happen.
49:16Yeah.
49:17How far is this going to set you guys back?
49:21A lot.
49:21We were nearly done.
49:22We were ready to, like, grout and paint and, like, this is the rest of the night.
49:27So we won't be getting to where we wanted to today.
49:42The problem was, every time they took another tile off, the waterproof membrane kept ripping.
50:01We're now on Waterproof Friday.
50:03We've gone, like, ten steps behind every other house.
50:06We are so far behind.
50:08Can we leave this until tomorrow?
50:10No, I'm going to fix it.
50:11I need to waterproof it now.
50:13Everyone's emotional.
50:14My tiles are emotional.
50:15I'm emotional.
50:21I sort of walked out there one stage.
50:23I was like, oh.
50:25And I think I got to about 10 metres out the door.
50:28And I'm like, what am I going to do?
50:33And I turned back around.
50:34I come in and I said, right, this is what we're doing.
50:35Because we were, like, floundering.
50:37I'm like, just get every tile on the wall that you can get on the wall.
50:40And the other bits we can't, that we've got to fix, we're going to fix tomorrow.
50:46Someone's looking for a leader and I'm just like, I got out there and I'm like, that's not leading.
50:51And I just turned around and went, bang, I felt like a footy coach.
50:54This is what we're going to do?
50:55Yeah, I gave them a pep talk at the end there too.
50:57So they show up.
50:58It was half time.
50:58They just show up tomorrow, you know.
51:02You just have to come back the next day and stop.
51:05Sometimes you'll come back here tomorrow and then it actually goes all right.
51:09You're like, oh, it wasn't actually that bad.
51:10It's a bad one.
51:14We can still solve this, you know, and we are solving it.
51:17Like, we're going to finish our bathroom tomorrow, we have to.
51:22Sunday night, the race to the finish hits overdrive.
51:25It looks like a bit of panic out there.
51:27Stopping is not an option.
51:29With the pressure mounting, the teams face the first round of feedback from the judges.
51:34Are you ready?
51:35Yeah, buckle up.
51:37Wow.
51:38For a weak one, this is some of the best work I've seen.
51:42I'm besotted with this bathroom.
51:45But when you're comparing apples for apples, the devil's in the detail.
51:49This is just way too high.
51:52It's a good bathroom, but it's not finished.
51:55This is different.
51:56That's what my grandma says when she doesn't like something.
51:59Oh, I'm worried.
