00:00Innocent families are mourning.
00:01Officer Saitamura drove to New York from Las Vegas three days ago.
00:06He arrived in New Jersey just about two hours or so before the shooting.
00:09Take a listen to what investigators found when they searched his car.
00:13Officers found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition and magazines,
00:19a backpack, and medication prescribed to Mr. Tamora.
00:23Investigators believe that he acted alone and say there is no active threat to the community.
00:31Again, all of this is still very much under investigation.
00:35Live in Midtown Manhattan, Josh, back to you.
00:38All right, Haley Fixler there with Fox 5 New York.
00:40Thank you so much.
00:41I'm sure we'll be checking back as we get more information.
00:45It is now 7.20 on the East Coast and 4.20 on the West Coast.
00:49I do want to take you out to our Fox 5 New York team right now
00:52as they are interviewing live Mayor Eric Adams about all of this.
00:56Let's lift up the audio here and listen in.
00:59It's much better here.
01:01Dan and Rosanna, back over to you.
01:03Mike, thank you very much.
01:04While police this morning searching for a motive in the deadly shooting in Midtown
01:08that took the lives of four people, including an off-duty NYPD officer.
01:12Police identified the shooter as Shane Tamora, 27 years old, from Las Vegas.
01:17He opened fire on the Park Avenue building during rush hour on Monday night
01:22before turning the gun on himself.
01:24Joining us right now with more on the investigation, Mayor Adams, thank you so much.
01:28Our condolences to everyone who was affected yesterday, their families,
01:33the people who work in those buildings.
01:35What new information do you have for us this morning, Mayor?
01:39Thank you for having me and really pointing out this horrific incident.
01:43We had six people who were shot, one being the suspect.
01:50As you indicated, he turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the chest.
01:55He appeared to have some history, mental health history,
02:01from what we're getting from our partners in the Nevada, Las Vegas area.
02:10But it's just a real unfortunate situation.
02:13The suspect walked into the building 345 Park Avenue,
02:18carrying in his right hand an automatic weapon,
02:21immediately discharged rounds, shot a police officer, Officer Islam,
02:28a three-year veteran with two children,
02:32and his wife is expecting a child on the way.
02:35And, again, our hearts goes out to the entire city in general,
02:40but specifically the men and women in the NYPD and Officer Islam's family.
02:44Yes, we agree with you and send our condolences as well.
02:48Tell us about the apparent suicide note that was in the shooter's pocket.
02:54He alluded to having CTE from playing in the NFL.
03:00He never played in the NFL.
03:02And he alluded to the CTE being the reason for his illness.
03:09It appears as though he was going after the employees at the NFL,
03:17the building 345 housed the NFL's company there as well.
03:24But we're still going through the suicide note to zero in on the exact reason.
03:31But at this time, it appears as though something that is attached to his belief
03:36he experienced CTE from playing in the NFL.
03:39And so it appears that this is an individual who drove all the way across the country from Las Vegas,
03:44believing he was suffering from this brain disorder known as CTE.
03:48He goes to this building where the NFL headquarters are located in some kind of revenge situation.
03:55He gets inside.
03:56He ends up on the 33rd floor.
03:59We know that the NFL offices are on a lower floor.
04:02Does it appear he got lost in the building?
04:03Was he trying to get there?
04:04Did he just go the wrong way?
04:06What can you tell us about that?
04:08Yeah, great question.
04:09There are two different elevator banks.
04:12And as anyone has said, many of our corporate buildings, some banks don't go to every floor.
04:19He appeared to have gone to the wrong bank.
04:22And he ended up on the floor of Rootin Management.
04:26And you see on the videos that he discharged the weapons several times.
04:32And we must commend Rootin Management for the safety precautions that they've put in place,
04:39even a safe bathroom where you can lock it down with a bulletproof door.
04:44Some of the staffers use that.
04:48It's unfortunate that during these days and times, active shooter drills are taking place all across the country.
04:55And Rootin Management did their job of clearly having those active shooter drills.
05:01And the staffers who were in the building were able to utilize some of the safe rooms.
05:07And I believe it played a great role in saving lives of some of the staffers.
05:13It was after 6 p.m.
05:16And so many people were no longer in the office.
05:19But he appeared to have gone to the wrong floor and due to the wrong elevator bank,
05:26where you can see on the front desk which elevator bank was the NFL.
05:31But he did not go to that bank.
05:33Okay, so it sounds like he did go to the wrong floor.
05:36You know, you talked about a history of mental illness.
05:39You've been in touch with your partners out there in the Nevada area,
05:41where apparently he had a concealed carry permit.
05:45But if this is an individual who had some history of mental illness
05:49and then is able to get this permit and then a high-powered rifle,
05:53I mean, those things don't seem like they're adding up here with this history of mental problems
05:57and then being able to get this high-powered rifle.
06:00And it harms cities like New York.
06:04When you look at the fact we have been on a very focused action
06:10of removing illegal guns off our streets, close to 23,000,
06:14here you have a person that is able to drive from an area where the carry laws are more lax
06:21and enter our city and have in possession of an automatic weapon of this magnitude.
06:30That is the battle that we've had as New Yorkers,
06:33that we had to actually not only police our city,
06:37but police the neighboring states that allow more lax gun laws,
06:42and they enter our city.
06:44He drove from Las Vegas, as you stated, to come to New York to do harm.
06:49Mayor, were there any warning signs that he was on his way here?
06:54I know New York is always the target,
06:57and that our police officers thwart a lot of possible attacks in this city.
07:03Do we have any indication that he was on the radar of our police officers?
07:10No, not at all.
07:11And our partners from federal agencies, they were here to assist as well,
07:17and there were no indications at all that he was coming to New York to create any harm.
07:23And we understand that New Yorkers are shaking at this time,
07:26and you will see a visible presence of our critical response teams that will be out at major shopping areas.
07:35But we don't believe that there are any other gunmen that was participating in this action.
07:42He's a lone gunman, but at a high level of abundance for caution,
07:48we're going to make sure that we do have our critical response team at our shopping locations and major tourist attractions.
07:55Mayor, 911 calls.
07:59This guy double parked his car on Park Avenue and got out of the car with a rifle.
08:07High-powered rifle, absolutely.
08:08A high-powered rifle.
08:09I know New Yorkers are rushing to get home.
08:12Sometimes they're looking at their phone.
08:14Were there 911 calls that alerted, that gave the police a heads up to get to the scene right away?
08:22Yes, there were several calls made.
08:24Over 40 calls were made.
08:27And, you know, we announced last week about the partnership with Citizen Apps.
08:34I want to thank them.
08:35We were able to get communications out to New Yorkers.
08:39It was a powerful tool to let New Yorkers know, particularly those who were in the buildings,
08:45would push notifications to stay into the building, shelter in place,
08:49until we could do a full sweep of the entire building.
08:53And, you know, there's a personal note for me.
08:56I was a mailroom employee in the building, 345 Park Avenue, as a young child.
09:02And walking through the building and seeing the blood and the number of innocent people who were shot
09:10has just brought me back to a full-circle moment of someplace that I worked as a young man.
09:15Ms. Mary, we don't have a lot of time left.
09:17I know you have a busy morning.
09:18But gun violence in the United States is a serious problem.
09:21New York City and Midtown, these skyscrapers,
09:24we really haven't seen some of the problems that we've seen in other parts of the country.
09:27But now we have this guy.
09:28We have the Mangione situation from last year targeting a corporate individual.
09:32Are you worried that there could be a copycat?
09:35You always focus on copycats.
09:38And that's why we're going to make sure we have our uniform assets that are out at high target areas.
09:46But also there will be assets that you're not going to see where officers are going to be there to keep a close watch.
09:54And we really have to thank all of our corporate partners.
09:58We meet with our corporate partners around public safety.
10:01And they have taken great strides in making sure that they harden their structures and their builders.
10:08And doing these trainings saves lives.
10:11Mayor, before we go, what are we doing?
10:13What is the city doing for Officer Islam's family?
10:15One thing about the New York City Police Department, we consider our fellow officers both retired and active as part of a family.
10:28And the city is going to be here to ensure they get the support that they deserve at this very difficult time.
10:33Mayor Adams, thank you so much for being here this morning.
10:36We appreciate you talking to New Yorkers and basically comforting them during a time everybody was very, very nervous yesterday.
