00:00A former Sabah State rugby player has been sentenced to 12 years jail for causing the
00:04death of his younger sister after an argument over a handwritten message. 28-year-old Arden
00:11Mattson Maturin was initially due to stand trial on a murder charge. However, on Monday he pleaded
00:17guilty before High Court Judge Justice Datuk Duncan Sikodol to an alternative charge of culpable
00:23homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304, Subsection A of the Penal Code. He faced a
00:30maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a possible fine. The prosecution offered the
00:36alternative charge after receiving a letter of representation from the defense. Arden admitted
00:42to causing the death of 25-year-old Audrey Maturin with the intent to inflict bodily harm likely to
00:49result in death. The offense was committed between 3.30pm and 4.30pm on May 4, 2023 at their family
00:58home in Jalan, Signal, Hill. The court heard that at the time of the incident the siblings were alone
01:05when Audrey left a handwritten note telling her brother not to smoke inside the house.
01:11This sparked an argument that escalated tragically. Arden struck his sister multiple times on her face,
01:19neck, and chest. Neighbors reported hearing screams and saw Arden leaving the house in distress.
01:26When the parents returned home around 4.50pm, they discovered Audrey unconscious in a pool of blood.
01:34Despite being rushed to Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, she was pronounced dead two days later from severe
01:40traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures. In delivering the 12-year sentence, Justice Duncan
01:47Sikodal acknowledged the tragedy's impact on the entire family. The judge noted that while the offense
01:54was serious, it occurred in a moment of uncontrolled anger without premeditation.
