The days of Campbelltown being at the frontier of civilisation are over and
00:05
for many it is just a stopover on the highway between Launceston and Hobart.
00:10
However, these days it is once again home to the frontier.
00:16
The last frontier, if you will.
00:19
Hi, I'm Anthony from Last Frontier Vintage Collectibles in Campbelltown.
00:24
Come on in.
00:25
I mean, I'm a 60s baby and grew up in the 70s and Hot Wheels and, you know,
00:34
Evel Knievel and all that sort of stuff, playing with that sort of stuff, scale electrics.
00:39
And probably the last 10, 15 years have been a little bit more serious.
00:44
And been in antique shops in Melbourne where I rent out a space and sell from there.
00:50
Go to auctions, garage sales and that sort of stuff, pick up what you can.
00:54
And bought a lot of the stuff over here that I collected over the years and put it into the shop here.
01:00
In the months since its opening, the store has become a cornucopia of collectibles,
01:06
full of trinkets, old school homewares and retro gadgets befitting its status as a vintage shop.
01:12
It also has a cabinet full of glowing green glass.
01:15
Well, I've loved uranium for years and years and had a little bit of it myself in my collection.
01:20
And when I moved here, I put it all in the cabinet.
01:23
I really wanted to set up a cabinet with a black light or UV light, which illuminates the uranium.
01:30
And I just had a large purchase actually of about 80 pieces.
01:38
So I've got over 100 pieces in that little cabinet at the moment.
01:41
Now, for those of you who prefer to take your collectibles without radiation.
01:46
Owned by Norman Allison, one of the rats at Tobruk.
01:51
Pretty proud piece.
01:53
It's even got a letter inside that I've kept in there.
01:56
Certainly not from that era, but that's provenance of this item that was owned by one of the rats.
02:04
All these vintage goodies.
02:06
I had to know.
02:07
What was the shopkeeper's favourite?
02:09
Gosh, it's hard, mate.
02:10
That's a hard question.
02:12
It's like your kids, I guess.
02:14
Eventually, he settled on this funky looking gadget, known as a Teesmaid.
02:19
Yeah, well, I've had this in my collection for probably 10 odd years.
02:23
I just love it.
02:25
Art Deco, 1950s.
02:27
Made in England by a mob called Goblin.
02:31
And it needs a bit of work, but nevertheless.
02:34
A Teesmaid is one of those things you'd have on your bedside table.
02:38
Set the alarm.
02:40
And it will make a cup of tea for you in the morning for when you wake up already prepared.
02:45
After some even more hardline questions.
02:48
So, never seen Wallace and Gromit?
02:50
No, no.
02:51
I'm sure they're classic.
02:53
I'm sure they're classic.
02:55
What about the clangers?
02:56
Little pink sort of mouse things that live on the map, right?
03:00
No, never seen them.
03:01
No, I'm a 60s child, so...
03:03
What is 60s?
03:05
I had just one more question.
03:07
Who shops here?
03:09
Everyone.
03:10
Campbelltown's a stopping place for a lot of people getting off the boat, maybe heading
03:17
to Hobart, or Hobart heading to the boat, or Launceston, vice versa, travelling around.
03:22
So we've got a really great place here in Campbelltown with some food shops, park, toilets, a couple
03:29
of vintage shops here.
03:32
And so I get a wide range of people stopping through here, hence why I've got such a wide
03:38
range of vintage collectibles in here.
03:41
A lot of people just come through just for the experience of, you know, looking at old
03:47
things, put a smile on their face, and things like that.
03:50
So, you know, I love me, I love me job.
03:53
It's not really a job really, because, you know, you're not really working when you're
03:57
doing something you love.
03:58
I'm so proud of you.
03:59
Yeah.
04:00
He's done well.
04:01
Yeah, he's done well.
04:02
He's done well.
04:03
Yeah.
04:04
He's done well.
04:05
No.
04:06
Yeah, he's done well.
04:07
Yeah.
04:08
And he's done well.
04:09
Yeah.
04:10
I'm done well.
