Bec Miller of Makers Nest talks about shoplifting.
Transcript
00:00Here at Makers Nest, we showcase a variety of different Tasmanian makers, and that varies at every pop-up.
00:05We can showcase anywhere between 30 to 60 makers at each of our pop-up events, and this is commission-based.
00:12So every theft from this store, or for example the theft that happened on the weekend,
00:17they stole four different items from four different local Tasmanian makers.
00:22So that's the ripple effect that it has.
00:24It's not just stealing from our beautiful shop, but it's stealing from four individual creators.
00:31So the incident that happened on the weekend actually happened out on the street.
00:35So we had to chase them up the street a couple of doors.
00:38The incident happened outside Country Road on the corner as they were trying to cross the road.
00:44We actually had to chase our stop back.
00:46Had it not been me here in store at the time, I don't think that our team members would have felt comfortable
00:52to be able to put themselves in that kind of circumstance, which makes it really challenging.
00:56So I guess it's easy for me, I have that confidence, I have that experience,
01:01but had it have been during the week with our regular, you know, loving team members,
01:05it could have been more challenging, because this store predominantly is ran by the makers that are involved,
01:11and they're not used to being in situations like that.
01:14We've also had a lot of local retailers come in over the last week
01:18and say that they're sorry that that had happened to us, and how they've experienced it as well,
01:23and how unfortunately they lose their stock.
01:25They can't chase them.
01:27If they ask to view their bags, they're mouthed off, and, you know, they just let them go,
01:33and their hands are tied.
01:34And I guess the situation that happened on the weekend,
01:38I gave myself that freedom to be able to chase that harder, because I care.
01:42I care about our local makers, and I don't want them to be losing their stock.
