Will Craig Breslow and the #Redsox look to improve this '25 team?
12 teams interested in Duran?! If Sox got a top of rotation SP, would you move Jarren? #MLB
Transcript
00:00Brett, where are you this morning on your beloved Boston Red Sox?
00:05I think potentially you could have a season.
00:10You could have a summer where they're making a playoff push.
00:16Oh, so you're back in.
00:17You're back in.
00:18Yeah, I've always been in.
00:20I think you need to look realistically at it, right?
00:24They cleared out Devers, and now they're starting to play good.
00:29They have the sixth best offense in all of baseball.
00:33They're starting to play better.
00:35They're starting to pitch better.
00:36I think pitching is most important to their success.
00:40But for them to hit the playoff strike, they have 70 games left.
00:44For them to make the playoffs, it comes down to about they need to win 40 of 70 games.
00:51So they need to go 10 games above 500 the next 70,
00:54which that's why this stretch that they have this week is incredibly important.
00:59They've got to take care of business this week
01:01and put themselves in position going into the trade deadline.
01:05So could it be done?
01:07Yeah, but they've kind of dug themselves a hole, right?
01:09They're two games up.
01:10They're two games above 500,
01:11and they need to make some serious –
01:16they need to make up some –
01:18they need to dig out.
01:19So they need to make up some of that from the first half of the season
01:24and not playing good.
01:25And they're still not playing great.
01:26They're still not playing great defensively.
01:27They're pitching.
01:28Their bullpen's starting to wear down a little bit.
01:30But we're all right.
01:32We could have a season.
01:34Brett, do you believe Craig Breslow when he says that
01:37what he's going to do at the trade deadline is to improve this team in 2025?
01:41And does that mean being a buyer in your mind?
01:44Yeah, I do.
01:46I do.
01:47I think the one you guys were talking, Courtney,
01:49you were talking earlier about Jaron Duran.
01:52I think there's a path for them to do both.
01:55I think if they make a baseball trade with Jaron Duran –
01:58so Jaron Duran does have three years left of contract.
02:02He's under control for three more years this year
02:05and three more after at Cheap Money.
02:08So when they say 12 teams are interested in Jaron Duran,
02:11I do believe that there are 12 teams.
02:14The problem that I see, Courtney,
02:16is that the 12 teams that are interested in Jaron Duran
02:22are all playoff teams,
02:23and they're not teams that are interested in trading
02:25one of their quality players.
02:28Does that make sense?
02:29So they don't want to make a baseball trade
02:30because they're trying to make the playoffs.
02:31They're more interested in trading prospects
02:34where I think the Red Sox need a number two starter,
02:38a quality back in return for Jaron Duran,
02:41who I don't think they should trade him,
02:44but I think if you can get a number two pitcher back for him
02:47with control, that's fine.
02:49But I have faith in Craig,
02:51and I do think they're going to be a buyer.
02:53I think he's proven that his moves in the offseason worked.
03:00I think he's putting a pretty good team on the field.
03:03Do you agree with that, Courtney?
03:05Do you like Craig Breslow's moves,
03:06or where do you stand on that?
03:08Yeah, I overall think that Craig Breslow's taken
03:11almost too much heat when it comes to the Red Sox.
03:13I think that he and Sam Kennedy are the first line of defense
03:16because the Henrys don't really speak much,
03:18and I think that it's been unwarranted a lot of this season.
03:22So, yeah, no, I think I like the moves that he's made.
03:24I trust him, actually.
03:26So you think pitching, Brett,
03:28you want them to focus on pitching.
03:30When it comes to a move deadline-wise,
03:33you want them to focus on pitching.
03:35Yeah, number two starter and a huge bullpen piece
03:38would be the two area.
03:41I don't think you have to worry about first base.
03:43You kind of have those two guys platooning there.
03:45Yeah, I think they're doing a good job.
03:47What was it, Gonzalez last night and Toro?
03:50They've been kind of...
03:51Brett, would you...
03:52So then I think that because we've had this discussion
03:54about Jaron Duran,
03:57I mean, I wouldn't trade him,
03:59but he's your most valuable asset.
04:01You have these other guys that are playing well.
04:03Then would you wait till after the season?
04:08Yeah, yeah.
04:09You could do too.
04:10I would wait till the offseason to trade him, right?
04:14I think you're going to get more...
04:15You're going to get more back for Jaron Duran,
04:18I think, in the offseason,
04:19because like I said with you,
04:20the 12 teams that are interested in Jaron Duran right now
04:23are trying to make the playoffs.
04:24So it doesn't make sense for them to give you
04:26one of their best pitchers for Jaron Duran.
04:29But in the offseason,
04:30now you can trade him to 30 teams, right?
04:33So it kind of opens up the...
04:35It opens up your possibilities,
04:36and I think you're going to get a better return.
04:38So I think if you're going to trade Jaron Duran,
04:41it might be this year,
04:44but I don't think the return is going to be as good
04:46as if you wait until the offseason.
04:48That's just my...
04:49That would be my take on it.
04:50But he is your most valuable asset,
04:52and he does have three more years of control.
04:55And he was a top five, top 10 MVP candidate last year.
05:00He has regressed a little bit this year,
05:02but he's in the prime of his career,
05:04and he's not making a lot of money.
05:05He's going year to year with arbitrations.
05:06He's not making a ton of money.
05:08But if you can get a legit, as you said,
05:10a legit number two pitcher,
05:11then you trade Jaron Duran all day long.
05:13I would do that.
05:14Yeah.
05:15I would do that all day long, unfortunately.
05:18Yep.
05:18Yep.
05:18You trade Jaron Duran,
05:19and then I think you can move the pieces around
05:21a little bit, Greg,
05:22to make it work in your outfield and your lineup,
05:25and I think you're all right.
05:27But you need pitching.
05:28You know, and with Bregman coming back,
05:30Bregman coming back,
05:32you know, the rising tide lifts all ships.
05:33So you get Bregman back,
05:35and that puts him at number two in the lineup,
05:37and that's a huge right-handed at-bat for you.
05:40Everyone else slides down,
05:41and your offense just continues to get better.
05:43But Bregman coming back is a really,
05:45really valuable piece.
05:47Baseball, Brett, great to hear your voice.
05:49And you, like a lot of us, are back.
05:53The Red Sox are back.
05:54Yep.
05:54Back, buddy.
05:54I'm back, buddy.
05:56I'm back.
05:56There you go.
05:58Get healthy, too.
05:59It's the third time I've been back this season.
06:01Well, you know, they'll keep you there, man.
06:03That's the thing about it.
06:04That's the thing about it.
06:05They will keep you there.
06:07All right.
06:07All right.
