Would you entertain dealing Jarren Duran??
Why do you believe Devers is taking grounders at shortstop?
Transcript
00:00Most everybody here said they don't want to acquiesce and say farewell to Jaron Duran,
00:07even though the Padres might give you some value there.
00:10Sports.
00:11That would be stupid.
00:13Huh?
00:13That would be stupid by the Red Sox.
00:14Why would that be stupid?
00:15You don't give away one of your best plays.
00:17Well, you're trying to get Roman Anthony up here.
00:19Yeah, okay.
00:19So you ease things when it comes to your outfield, and you're providing some value for the future.
00:25No, but isn't Duran part of your future?
00:28Yes.
00:28Isn't he young?
00:29Is he?
00:29Are you going to be – this team seems to be in the mode where they want a bunch of young guys
00:36who haven't reached their $20, $25 million annual salary mark,
00:42and so are they not going to part with Jaron Duran in a couple, two, three years anyway?
00:47No, because you would then, I think, resign him because you're not in a rebuilding stage.
00:52You brought in Garrett Crochet.
00:54You made moves for your team to get better, not to rebuild.
00:58I could see if you weren't adding pieces like that, and you were like, all right, we're going to rebuild this whole thing.
01:04I think you re-sign Duran.
01:07You bring up Anthony.
01:08You move Sadan, Raphael.
01:10You can actually keep Sadan in the outfield because at the game last night, they had – I know Willie Abreu plays right field.
01:19Yeah.
01:19But do they feel like that's somebody that they see in their future?
01:25Because if not, you could have Anthony and Abreu kind of bouncing back and forth between right field if you wanted to keep Sadan in the outfield.
01:33If not, you just move Sadan to the infield.
01:35Oh, and Devers is going to shortstop, so, you know, you got that solved.
01:39Right.
01:39He's going to shortstop.
01:43We just hit our sports quota for the hour.
01:45Good job.
01:46That's where he was taking grounders, Wiggy.
01:49Were you not there last night?
01:51Yeah, I was there, but I –
01:52For warm-ups?
01:52No, I wasn't there for warm-ups.
01:54Oh.
01:55Yeah.
01:56Guy is giving everybody a big, giant middle finger.
01:59That's what Raphael Devers is doing.
02:00If you want to talk about autographs to bring this full circle, Pedro Martinez would pregame sign autographs like you read about for all the employees, for everybody.
02:10Nobody was ever more generous with their time than that guy.
02:12Yeah.
02:13But –
02:13All right, so that's it on the sports quotient.
02:15We can't do any more on that?
02:16No, no, no.
02:16We can keep doing it, but that was the limit.
02:18That's what we're allotted.
02:18So I'm just asking – I'm asking the question.
02:21Somebody in the Twitch chat said, Greg hates Rafi Devers.
02:24I don't hate anybody.
02:26I love everybody.
02:26But why – what is the point of him being out there last night in front of everybody taking grounders at short?
02:36Yeah, I don't know that one.
02:38What's the point of it?
02:39You explain it to me because you're his mouthpiece.
02:41I have no idea what that one's all about.
02:43You're his hype man.
02:44Yeah, I can't answer that one for you.
02:46Why is he – if not to just say, hey, F you, this is what I – is that where he wants to play now?
02:54Is that what he's doing?
02:55I don't – I had no, like, no clue about this.
02:58He's not going to touch first base.
02:59He's not going to touch third base.
03:01I thought he was fine at DH.
03:03That's what he said.
03:04Until you said he's taking ground ball.
03:05I don't think he's going to move.
03:06Yeah, I don't know what that one's all about.
03:07I think that he was just doing this to maybe – maybe it was an FU.
03:10Butterguy says, Greg, you do dislike him.
03:13Please stop making him out to be the bad guy.
03:16Wow, I'm making him out to be the bad guy now.
03:18That's how that's happening.
03:20Yeah.
03:21The way I'm spinning it is that he is a guy who is unwilling to help the team out when the team needs it.
03:29And so I'm just making that up.
03:31That's not what Raphael Devers appears to be.
03:33Well, the team screwed him over in the beginning.
03:36They did?
03:36So I think it depends.
03:37They're paying him $30 million a year.
03:39How do you screw somebody over when you're paying him $30 million a year?
03:42Because you set him up to fail in the beginning of the season.
03:45It didn't seem like he failed.
03:47He did.
03:47Why not just leave him at third base then?
03:51Well, you had a guy who was better at third base.
03:54Well, don't you have guys that are better at first base but you want to put him there?
03:58If you don't want to mess up the chemistry of the team and that's more important, leave him at third.
04:02Put Bregman at second.
04:04Because Bregman also said he would play second.
04:06Yeah, you could have easily done that.
04:08Right.
04:08And Raphael Devers could have accepted the fact that a year prior he said, we need better players in the team.
04:13The team did that and then he bitched.
04:15But then he bitched because they didn't make it obvious to him that he was not going to play third.
04:21If you believe that Alex Cora said to him, hey man, no, no, no.
04:24It's going to be between you and Bregman.
04:26I don't know who's going to play third.
04:27Maybe we'll split your time.
04:29We're going to try it out in the beginning of the season.
04:31I don't think that's what happened.
04:33I think that he told Rafi Devers something that didn't end up being true.
04:38Yeah, that's why I said I put this more on the organization because if they would have got out ahead of this in the offseason as soon as they signed Bregman, then I think we wouldn't be in this position.
04:51So a team can treat you poorly so it's okay for you to be unprofessional?
04:55Well, I don't think it's okay.
04:56So you're excusing it.
04:57No, I didn't say it's okay, but I can see somebody being petty.
05:02Right.
05:02But you're defending someone for being petty.
05:05Yeah.
05:06I'm saying that I understand why he's doing it.
05:08I don't agree with it.
05:09Right.
05:09We all wish that he was handling it differently.
05:11But the organization, if they handle it differently, we're not in this position.
05:17So then we don't even have to worry about him being petty.
05:20So you'd rather the Red Sox without Bregman?
05:22No, I'd rather the Red Sox have handled the situation in the beginning in the offseason so when you get to spring training, there is no issue.
05:32They did not do that.
05:33They could have easily sat down Cora, you know, Breslow, Kennedy, could have easily sat down with Devers in the offseason and saying, hey, we're going to bring Bregman in and he's going to play third.
05:46Did Alex Cora not say last week that when talking to him about playing third base currently because they're in a pinch, he was, quote, not having it?
05:58Did Alex Cora say that?
05:59Okay.
06:00So why is he out there last night then?
06:03If he's not having it.
06:05Yeah, because maybe he's saying, oh, you know, I'll help out.
06:07I'll play shortstop.
06:08Because now he's not having it.
06:10Maybe there's one position.
06:11I'll help out.
06:12I'll play the most difficult position in the infield.
06:15Yeah.
06:15If that's the one you want to give me because that's the only thing I'm taking.
06:20Right.
06:21Seems like a giant FU to me.
06:23It might be.
06:24But the reason you're in this FU situation is because you as an organization didn't get ahead of ahead of this.
06:34You should have got out in front of it.
06:36And yeah, is Devers being a little petty?
06:39Maybe he is.
06:39I understand why.
06:40But if you do your job as an organization when you know you're going to bring in a guy to replace Devers at his position, you should have made sure you sat down and talked to him and did everything.
06:53It's the same way that and it's not kind of the same same way, but players just tend to be petty.
07:02Brady was petty when you were when you signed Garoppolo down in Cleveland.
07:08You heard Joe Flacco say, I'm not here to mentor no young guys.
07:13Guys are going to get petty when they feel like you're putting somebody in a position.
07:19And there's been so many things said.
07:21And if I'm Devers, I'm hearing Craig Breslow on this show or others on this station say, oh, we're not going to move when Bregman first got hurt.
07:29We're not going to move Rafi to third because we don't want to mess with him because he's figuring out DH right now.
07:36OK, now because you guys didn't have a plan in place for if Tristan Cassis went down at first base.
07:41Now you want to take me out of the role that you have me in that I'm finally figuring out and put me there.
07:45Like make that make sense.
07:47Right. And why can't Cora just pick up the phone and call Devers before they sign Bregman and say, here's what we're thinking about?
07:54Because he would have acted the same baby like way that he acted.
07:58Maybe he would have. But by the time the result would have been the same.
08:00No, no. But by the time they got, he would have done a press conference with his translator and said, I want to play third base.
08:06Listen, I don't think Alex Bregman ought to be taking my position.
08:09No, but but but but who knows what happened earlier?
08:12You know, but you don't know that he Cora might have been able to talk to him beforehand and convince him to maybe go to other another position.
08:20Or maybe he does go kicking and screaming.
08:22But this is not this is not an issue that we're dealing with now because you would have had everything taken care of.
08:28And why does it all fall on Rafi at the end of the day?
08:30Like, why didn't they have a plan in place?
08:33Shouldn't they shouldn't they have guys ready to go if somebody gets hurt?
08:36The Red Sox have dealt with injuries the last four seasons.
08:38That's been their crux.
08:40That's been what they've said every single year is the reason why they don't end up playing in October.
08:44Well, maybe their plan in place was that the guy who played the position would go back and play it.
08:50But at first somebody who's willing.
08:51No, at third.
08:52No, but what about at first?
08:55Right.
08:56Yeah, I mean, I yeah, I guess.
08:58So then why not move Bregman?
09:03I can't.
09:04I let's just say it's like I I agree that Cora could have done things better in the off.
09:09OK, so the team's better with Bregman at third.
09:11Everybody, I think, can agree to that.
09:13Yeah, we can agree to that.
09:14But the team is probably better with.
09:17Whether it's Campbell, whether it's Sogod, whether it's Gonzalez, whether it's Toro,
09:23they're probably better with them at first than Devers.
09:26Did you do the Toro more when you were in Sto, Greg, or did you have a guy?
09:30I had a guy.
09:31Oh, of course.
09:34So why are you not saying that?
09:37Why don't I?
09:37It was a week, basically, that they needed him at first base.
09:41But why do I not hear that?
09:42It was a week and a half.
09:43But why am I not hearing that?
09:44Hearing what?
09:45You just said Bregman's better than Devers at third.
09:48Why am I not hearing these other guys are better than Devers at first?
09:53Because they're not.
09:54For like a week and a half over there.
09:55Right.
09:56What do you mean?
09:57What's the big deal?
09:58What's the big one?
09:59It's a much less important position.
10:00It's much more easy to field than third base.
10:03That's why.
10:04Right.
10:04But you don't think that Christian Campbell is a better first baseman or Romy Gonzalez is
10:09a better first baseman?
10:10No, Christian Campbell can't hit.
10:11Romy was out with an injury.
10:12You get that.
10:13Yeah.
10:13That's when they needed him.
10:14But you had Sogod and Toro playing there who are better defenders than he is.
10:20Okay.
10:21You're just looking for a reason to blame Devers.
10:24They want what they want with him playing a positional spot in the infield is the addition
10:30of his bat in the lineup.
10:31But Wiggy, I get that.
10:32You get that, right?
10:33I get that.
10:33But you're just, you're using, you're using this as an excuse to blame Devers.
10:39I'm not.
10:39Your bat, his bat is in the lineup.
10:41As a DH.
10:42Yeah.
10:42You can add another bat to the lineup, like the one you're paying $70 million, if you
10:49have him positionally in the field.
10:51Like, you get that, right?
10:52And we can both agree.
10:53We all agree, Wiggy.
10:54We think Devers is petty, right?
10:56Yeah, I said that.
10:57Okay.
10:57That's it.
10:58We all agree.
10:59You just don't think it's as big a deal for someone to be petty?
11:01No.
11:01And it's fine.
11:02Do we agree that there's better options at first base?
11:05Not in the week that separated the injuries, no.
11:09I thought you have to combine the bat with the glove.
11:12It's both.
11:13Yeah, but see, I don't understand.
11:14Because this is the part that I think Courtney and I look at as going, this is just annoying
11:20and fraudulent, is because when you wanted him gone from third base, everybody said, move
11:26him to DH.
11:27I feel like I'm arguing with James right now.
11:29No, but how do you think I feel when you keep going back to, he can't play third, we
11:35want him to DH.
11:36Then he moves to DH, and now you're going.
11:41Then a horrible third baseman, you want to now put at first base.
11:44Right, because things occur over the course of a Major League Baseball season where you
11:50have different needs depending on the time of the player's injuries.
11:53Right.
11:54So that's why it's not even applicable.
11:56I don't know why you keep going back to that.
11:58Because they're a better positional.
12:01Do you think we'd be talking about Devers playing third if Bregman never got hurt?
12:05No.
12:05No.
12:05Okay, so what are we even doing?
12:07It's all related to the issues with the roster.
12:10No, no.
12:10It all started with Rafi Devers not playing first base or helping out at first base.
12:17You just want to help him out a little bit.
12:19It has nothing to do with third base.
12:21It's all about...
12:21You can get Roman Anthony up here and DH Roman Anthony.
12:24And I can ask you the same...
12:25You can do a million things.
12:27I can ask you the same question, Wiggy.
12:28Why did Devers want to play third and then not want to play third?
12:32Why did he flip-flop?
12:33Because you keep saying, why am I saying this?
12:35Why did Devers say, I want to be a third baseman?
12:37Then he's asked to play third and he said no.
12:39Because he came up his whole career as a third baseman with the intention of being a third baseman.
12:44Right, so why didn't he want to play it?
12:45He wanted to play it.
12:47After he figured out DH and after Bregman, when he left for his wife to give birth,
12:51they said that they weren't going to put him in that position because he finally figured out DH.
12:55I feel like if I'm Rafael Devers...
12:57What do you have to figure out if you're a third baseman?
12:59He said he was a better hitter when he played the field.
13:03What are you even talking...
13:04Yeah, like you interrupted me and now it's...
13:07Yeah, I'm confused with your thought process.
13:10Give me the mute button, Tony Reale.
13:11So it's Devers' fault because he didn't want to go to first base.
13:16Now it's Devers' fault because Bregman got hurt and he didn't want to go back to third base.
13:22Like, hold on, let me get Jake.
13:24Jake from Quincy.
13:25What's up, Jake?
13:28Wiggy, you sound so stupid, honestly, and fraudulent.
13:31Go tell Bill Belichick you wouldn't change positions.
13:33You sound ridiculous.
13:35You too, Courtney.
13:36It's for the team.
13:37It's not about him.
13:38God damn.
13:39But Jake, isn't there better players that could play the position?
13:43You sound fraudulent.
13:45It's easy for all of us to sit back and say, be a better teammate.
13:49Be a better teammate.
13:50If I'm Devers, I'm like, F this organization.
13:52They've screwed me over left and right.
13:53I don't care if I'm making $30 million.
13:55I'd also love to see his contract because everybody's saying, oh, well, you know, if I did this at my work, I'd be fired.
14:02What if his contract says, like, he can only play a certain position?
14:06Well, as Cora told you, the guy who signed the contract no longer is here.
14:09Right.
14:09And people like Jake and all these people complaining about Devers are so phony and fake because their biggest thing was from day one, Devers stinks at third base.
14:22He's horrible.
14:23Go to DH.
14:25He goes to DH.
14:26It was horrible when he started.
14:28Starts off slow.
14:29And people are like, Devers stinks.
14:31Then he catches fire.
14:33He's your best.
14:33He's been your best hitter for a while now.
14:35And now people are like, oh, he's petty because he won't play third base for a week or he won't go to first base for a week.
14:44But those were the same people saying he sucks.
14:47Get him out of the field.
14:48All right.
14:49So they're so phony.
14:50Maybe he just had a sudden urge last night to get out there and field a few grounders at shortstop.
14:55He's probably like, you know what?
14:57I just wanted to do that and just see, you know, see what the reaction was from the fans.
15:01It's like spending the whole spring training bitching about how much better you are when you play the field, then getting an opportunity to play in the field and say you're not into it.
15:09I don't know.
15:10How about how about call me crazy?
15:12How about you?
15:13You know, how about your beautiful, beautiful night here at Fenway?
15:16You know what I feel like doing?
15:17Toss me my glove.
15:19I think I'll go out to shortstop and build a few grounders.
15:22How about your $7 million a year manager who's supposed to be one of the best managers in baseball when it comes to handling players gets ahead of this and sits down with Devers before the season even starts.
15:34So this isn't an issue or preparing for if one of your guys gets hurt and you have a backup at first base.
15:39And stop comparing Bill Belichick and football players to baseball players.
15:43It's the dumbest thing ever.
15:45Well, it's so stupid.
15:47Well, Bill, Bill would never say, hey, Wiggy, we want you to go play the defensive line.
15:54It's like the dumbest thing ever.
15:56Stop with the comparisons.
15:57Baseball and football and other sports are totally different.
16:02It would be like telling Patrice Bergeron, you know what?
16:05We need you to play goalie now.
16:06Okay.
16:07So dumb.
16:08Bill Belichick did tell Mike Vrabel, we need you to catch a pass here or there in the end zone.
16:13He told Mike Vrabel said, thumbs up, Bill.
16:15He told Mike Vrabel, whatever you need, whatever you need, boss man.
16:19He said, Mike, here's what we're going to do.
16:21Save that.
16:21You're a good athlete.
16:23We're going to put you in on goal line.
16:25Brady's going to do a play action fake and run a crossing route or a corner route.
16:29And if you're wide open, catch the football.
16:31Who wouldn't want to do that?
16:33Fourier got screwed.
16:34Yeah, exactly.
16:35That's all he did.
16:35He had other guys that could.
