00:00what Jonathan Papelbon had to say about Raphael Devers.
00:05He spoke to the game.
00:07Is that the station chime?
00:0895.7, the game, yep.
00:10And talked a little bit about some of the issues
00:14that he has heard about Raphael Devers.
00:18So go ahead and let's hear what Jonathan Papelbon had to say.
00:21Raphael Devers does not do media.
00:24He does not talk to the media.
00:25He does not make himself available.
00:27He does not do team functions.
00:30And he had became a cancer in the clubhouse.
00:34You think Raphael was a bad teammate?
00:36I do.
00:37He wasn't willing to conform to what the Red Sox needed.
00:41And when you're the highest paid player
00:44and your company or your team needs something,
00:47I think it's up to that person
00:49that they have to do what's best for the team.
00:53Am I in that clubhouse?
00:54No, I'm not.
00:55Do I hear little riffs and stuff about what's going on?
00:59Yeah, here and there.
01:00But I do know for 110% fact that John Henry was not happy with Raphael Devers.
01:09Wow.
01:10So there you have – it's interesting, the guys who are stepping up to comment on this.
01:17Right.
01:18He is – I'll beat you to the punch.
01:20He's on the payroll.
01:21He is, yep.
01:21He's on the Red Sox payroll.
01:23So – but I don't know.
01:25I guess you didn't –
01:27I don't disagree with anything he said.
01:29I mean, outside of the cancer thing, which I don't like.
01:31I would say, like, yep, he didn't conform.
01:35He didn't do team stuff.
01:36He didn't go to charity.
01:37He was a problem.
01:38But who cares about that because he's a great hitter.
01:40Right.
01:40Yeah.
01:40Yeah, because if you're trying to make a – if you want to make a – get a Boy Scouts in, fine.
01:44You'll win 40 games.
01:46And he was winning – that Sunday, that cancer, won you the game with the insurance run home run.
01:52How many games did Devers win over the last couple weeks when the team was scuffling
01:57and he was the only guy hitting?
01:58I just – I don't think he's a great teammate, but I don't think that you get him –
02:03you're not better by getting rid of him.
02:04No, no, and I agree with you, Curtis, but I think what it does is that it allows fans
02:09that were already disappointed with Devers for not wanting to play first base
02:15or not wanting to, you know, help out the team.
02:17It then gives you – because when Pap says it, a guy that, you know, is a little bit plugged in
02:23or Big Papi and you're like, all right, maybe there are things that you start to –
02:26it gives, like, fans the way to say, okay, I can see why the Red Sox ultimately traded him
02:32on got rid of him because – not a cancer in the locker room.
02:36I don't want to – because people get upset when you use that word.
02:38But an influence in the locker room when it comes to maybe dividing it
02:43or whispering in the ears of some younger players.
02:45And you think he was.
02:47Yeah, I mean, based off of what we're starting to hear and what's starting to come out,
02:51I definitely think he was influential when it comes to them – and Breslow said it,
02:57we want to have a specific culture for the team and younger guys.
