Are the Red Sox invested in buying for '25? #MLB What were your thoughts on CBO of Red Sox, Craig Breslow's comments?
Transcript
00:00At least Craig Breslow holding on, holding on to the hope that this is a wild card team.
00:06And Curtis, your lead this morning was that some or many got very excited yesterday when Craig Breslow said that they wanted to improve the team and took that as a as a buy sign, like they say in real estate, but that it may not be a buy sign.
00:24It may not. It was intricate wording or use of the English language by Craig Breslow yesterday.
00:35That was Yale in the answer. No, I I'm always fascinated by what gets aggregated out of those interviews.
00:42I'm like, was it Greg's question or mine? Yes. And yesterday I saw that and I was like, I had the complete opposite reaction.
00:50If somebody says, are you going to buy and you say, yeah, we're interested. That's not a yes. Yeah.
00:56And if you say, I'm going to improve the team in 2025, well, there's a million ways that theoretically you could improve a team. Yeah.
01:03That doesn't involve adding payroll. So you to use the analogy, if somebody says you're going to buy this house and you say, we're going to improve our living condition. Right.
01:11That would be the answer. And that would be the semantical way you would get out of being in on something.
01:17I took it as if they were buyers because, and I'm combining that with Craig Breslow in the past saying that they are planning on using that money that they're saving from Rafi.
01:25But to be fair, we saw your Amazon delivery and you're almost always, you're always a buyer.
01:29Yes. I am always a buyer. But, but when it comes to what he said yesterday to say that you're going to improve the team in 2025, you're not talking about the future or things that we heard from Haim Bloom for so long.
01:39So to me, the only way to improve this team in 2025 is to be a buyer.
01:44I was with you, Courtney, but I think Curtis makes a good point because in Breslow's mind, trading Devers made them a better team.
01:50They didn't acquire any talent. They didn't actually get any better.
01:53Oh, he said it.
01:53But in their mind, they think they have a better team.
01:56He said last week, am I correct about that? With Devers that he thinks they win more games without him than they would have won with him.
02:03It was some turn of a phrase. I don't know if he said it, it may not make us, he might've said it may not be better, but we may somehow win more games and have the flexibility to win more games.
02:11So that's sort of both sides, which is what this ownership group is great at.
02:14But I, I, this is why Cora is so essential to this organization because you can't have people sounding like this relating to your fan base.
02:26Like if you're, it's a beautiful day today. It's not going to be nearly as hot.
02:29But if you have the opportunity to drive to Gloucester park, I don't know how much it is park, 30 bucks, 50 bucks to park and go to a fair, five bucks.
02:39It's not Boston Curtis.
02:40Use the Odyssey lot. It's Ken's pan.
02:43Also you, you parking anywhere in Gloucester? Probably not going to happen.
02:49I've been here since 85. I have sunglasses on, even though it's inside. I'm scary.
02:55Uh, yeah. So I, um, I, I just feel like there is zero desire that I would have to buy tickets and go support a product where they are so clearly constantly planning for the future and not actually investing.
03:10I thought the Bregman deal meant things changed. I was wrong.
03:13I thought that they were going to actually invest in this club and to, you know, do whatever they could to get over the top.
03:20And that was the easiest way for Breslau to say a hundred percent.
03:25We are going to do everything in our power to reallocate the resources we traded away before the deadline. Boom.
03:31And he said, we're going to do what we can to improve the team.
03:34Probably not going to happen.
03:39Ironically, that's something you heard a lot in high school.
03:40Um, it was interesting the way he answered the Bregman question.
03:48I'm aware that Craig Breslau is not going to reveal, uh, the intricate details of their negotiations, but, um, you know, he will, he said he will engage with Scott Boris when, uh, when the time is right or whatever.
04:03But I, I mean, the timing on Scott Boris saying publicly that Alex Bregman would like a long-term deal.
04:11And the fact that the, you know, the salary cap is looming, uh, is, is not lost on me.
04:18Like, you know, that's, Boris is brilliant.
04:20Like he knows that the fan base is going to be, cause a lot of us, it's sort of was like, I didn't know that Ken knew that it was a fait accompli that Bregman was opting out.
04:29I thought when Bregman got hurt, it was a good sign that he would not be opting out.
04:33Cause why would you opt out when you got hurt?
04:34Your value wouldn't be the same, but clearly Boris thinks that it would be.
04:38And so now not only do you trade Devers, you get worse.
04:42The guy that caused the disruption isn't even in Worcester.
04:46He's not even being back until after the trade deadline.
04:49So the only way the organization can actually do something that would show an investment would be to get ahead of the off season and extend Bregman now.
04:57Yeah.
04:57Would you accept that, uh, when it comes to your issue with the money they're saving on Devers and your belief that they're, it's all, it's all salary dump, uh, the Devers deal.
05:09No, that wouldn't do it.
05:10Cause it was already 40 million.
05:11Like they're just going to be adding years at the end.
05:13Like, okay.
05:13So even if they're adding years to that and you got him for four years, I mean, he probably wants, uh, so he's got this year and the opt in and he probably wants another four on top of that or whatever.
05:24I think he has a two years at 40 million if he doesn't opt out left.
05:28So that's if he's got 80 million on the table, he probably wants to double that and get, you know,
05:32but they want to get that done now because of the potential salary cap.
05:36Right.
05:36And they want to get it done now because what's if he comes back and is, he's got more, if he gets injured again or he doesn't play,
05:43or if he just doesn't like it here, but he's 31, how many years would you give him?
05:47I would, I mean, probably if, if it's two years and 80 currently, I would extend it.
05:52I would try to do just do four years, three 20.
05:54So you've got two years, one 60 and then add two years to it.
05:56Yeah.
05:57Or 30, 80.
05:58Sorry.
05:58That's my, that's Greg's deal.
06:00Yeah.
06:00Uh, 80 million.
06:02So it'd be what four years, one 60 is what I would do.
06:05Yeah.
06:05All right.
06:06Um, and does he have to work in important games like, uh, or, or is he like wiggy where he doesn't have to show up for a road trip?
06:13Shots fired.
06:14Ooh.
06:15You're going to have to answer for that.
06:16Don't you guys want, don't you wish wiggy was here this morning?
06:19Like, I mean, uh, yeah, everybody loves them.
06:21Yeah.
06:22I just, I'm so frustrated at the lack of ability we have to actually talk about it.
06:26I just feel like we're not as close as I thought we were.
06:29If he could just look at me and lie to my face over and over.
06:32Can I be honest?
06:33I'm kind of happy.
06:33Cause I got to come.
06:34Yeah.
06:34It worked out for you.
06:36All right.
06:37All right.
06:37Look at that shot.
06:38Yeah.
06:38Um, well, there was a guy who, uh, earlier offered Shime his spot on the greasy pole.
06:46Yeah.
06:46What's going on?
06:47Uh, he had to take off, but he is walking for, um, a friend of his who passed away, but he said he's 57 years old and he doesn't, he's already broken ribs in the past and all those.
06:59So he was willing to give, if Tom would approve it, uh, he was willing to give Shime his spot on the, uh, probably not going to happen.
07:09How do we get the approval?
07:10Why did he leave?
07:10That was the whole, I was so excited.
07:12I know.
07:13I probably not going to happen.
07:14Probably not.
07:15Why can't he give it to Shime?
07:17I know.
07:17What in the world is going on?
07:19Is this my fault?
07:21I don't think he liked you very much.
07:22It's all your fault.
07:23Oh, well, I don't, I don't, I don't know.
07:26But it's the dumbest thing in the world.
07:27The guy that's walking is giving it to Shime.
07:31Well, there's other guys in line, Curtis.
07:32You know, they don't want me, you don't want somebody to cut the line.
07:34Right.
07:35You can't just willy nilly throw it out there on the radio in February and think that you're going to be walking.
07:40Has there ever been such a trivial thing that meant so much?
07:43Yeah, but Curtis, they're in charge.
07:44You're not.
07:45That's true.
07:46They're in charge.
07:47You're not.
07:47Right.
07:48I just figured that if you can get your son into BC, you can get a guy in front of the line of the, you know, the pole.
07:55That's probably not going to happen.
07:56That's probably not going to happen, Curtis.
08:00I think.
08:01Probably not going to happen.
08:02Amazing.
08:02All right.
08:03If you want to be on the show this morning, the number to call is 617-779-7937.
08:09If you would rather text, you can text on the Subaru of New England text line.
08:14You can find your authorized Subaru retailer at SubaruofNewEngland.com.
08:19Curtis brought up the weather and it is beautiful here.
08:22Jackson, we should probably open up the WEEI window world of Boston weather window if we could.
08:30So Curtis can, or you can just poke his head outside the window world of Boston door here at the Beauport Hotel and give us the forecast.
08:38Oh, where we are right now in lovely Gloucester at the Beauport Hotel.
08:47One of the nicest hotels I've been in in Massachusetts.
08:50May win best accommodations, although I'm partial also to the Ocean Cliff in Newport.
08:55Both really, really nice.
08:56Both beautiful.
08:57Fun fact, Ian Maripole, who left the EI in 2013, which allowed me to come here, got married at the Ocean Cliff.
09:02Really?
09:02In Newport.
09:03Lovely place.
09:04But this place gives it a run for its money.
09:06It's a beautiful hotel.
09:07It really is.
09:08Did you have the President's Suite?
09:09I did not.
09:09No, just a regular.
09:10I always request just a regular.
09:11I did ask what Greg had when I checked in because I knew I was the first one checking.
09:15I said, do any of them have ocean views?
09:16I'll switch.
09:17Oh, without permission?
09:18Oh, yeah.
09:19You guys would have never known.
09:20The 10s room has two safes.
09:22Whatever you want.
09:2465 in Gloucester, afternoon high of 68.
09:27Back in Boston, 66, afternoon high of 72.
09:30And in Providence, 68, afternoon high of 75.
09:35Quick question.
09:36Right outside the window here is the fair.
09:39Yeah.
09:39Great St. Peter's Fair.
09:41If you could only have one piece of fair food, like we get off the air, you're hungry.
09:46Yeah.
09:47Easy.
09:47Did you walk past?
09:48Did you see they had like arancini?
09:49They had fried dough.
09:51They had Italian sausage.
09:52Yeah.
09:53For Tom, it's just sausage.
09:54Yeah.
09:55What would you have?
09:57I would not go fried dough.
09:58I'm not a fried dough person.
09:59It's crazy.
10:00I would go fried dough.
10:01No questions asked.
10:02You wouldn't really?
10:03Yeah.
10:03I wouldn't hesitate.
10:04Yeah.
10:04Maybe the arancini.
10:06I would go arancini.
10:07But like arancini isn't like considered fair food.
10:10Well, where we are, we're right outside.
10:11That's true.
10:12It is here.
10:13In general, though, it probably isn't.
10:15Like, you know, you're thinking more like your chicken tenders, your dogs, your popcorn.
10:21Slice of pizza.
10:21Slice of pie.
10:22Exactly.
10:23How was that breakfast sandwich?
10:25Oh, dude.
10:26Breakfast sandwich, great.
10:26And I want to thank Holy Cow.
10:29They brought the ice cream bottle.
10:30Oh, I can't wait.
10:31We have ice cream coming out.
10:33Do I just have to eat whatever flavor Wiggy wanted?
10:35Yeah, you can take, you can have Wiggies.
10:38Did Wiggy put an ice cream?
10:39No, which is an interesting indicator.
10:42I was thinking about that because I was shocked.
10:44Greg responded immediately.
10:46I responded after Greg.
10:48Wiggy's silent.
10:49Yeah.
10:49So he knew.
10:50Now.
10:50I wonder when he knew.
10:52Well, he just sent us a text with the acrobatic.
10:55Hi, Wiggy.
10:56You can call in.
10:57He claimed he told Ken about it three weeks ago.
10:59There's zero chance.
11:00Ken is many things, but he would not forget that conversation.
11:03He's very detail-art.
11:04He is.
11:05Sometimes, Curtis.
11:06Well, Monday, I think.
11:07Oh, well, not Saturday.
11:08That's right.
11:09Yeah, not Saturday.
11:10Maybe Ken's having an issue right now.
11:12Who knows?
11:12I think Monday will.
11:13I mean, we will get an answer either way, Monday, from Wiggy.
11:17Yeah.
11:17Unless he doesn't want to talk about it.
11:19I'm hurt.
11:20I'm not mad.
11:21I'm disappointed.
11:22Don't be upset.
11:22Can we all agree that whatever Wiggy says, and we will wait until Monday,
11:27he would not allow for us the excuse that he's going to offer to us?
11:31Correct.
11:32But you ever get the boo-boo contractions, though?
11:34Well, he'd be all over you guys.
11:37Yes, he would.
11:38But he's missing out on these incredible people here in Gloucester.
