Meerut — In a chilling incident in Jani area of Meerut, a farmer was allegedly murdered by his wife and daughter, aided by their lovers, as he opposed their illicit relationships. The police have arrested five accused, including the wife, daughter, and two lovers, in connection with the crime.
The deceased, identified as Subhash Upadhyay, around 60, was a hardworking farmer who toiled daily to provide for his family. Unbeknownst to him, his wife Kavita was allegedly in an affair with a Muslim youth, Gulzar, while his daughter Sonam was in a relationship with a Dalit boy, and wanted to marry him.
When Subhash came to know about these affairs and reportedly objected, the wife and daughter, along with their lovers, allegedly plotted his murder.
On Monday night, Subhash had gone to irrigate his fields in the jungles of Sisaula Kalan. According to police, the accused lay in wait and shot him in the waist. Believing him dead, they fled. Subhash somehow dragged himself to the Gang Canal track, where villagers found him and informed the police.
He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. His body was sent for postmortem and later cremated in a sombre atmosphere in Jani Khurd village.
The police initially registered a case against unknown assailants on the complaint of Subhash’s son Ayush. However, investigation soon revealed the alleged conspiracy involving his wife and daughter.
Jani police station in-charge Mahesh Rathore said the motive appears to be personal enmity within the family over the women’s affairs. Further investigation is underway, and the police have assured that all culprits will be brought to justice.
