00:00Where's Bell?
00:10By Matthew Broughton.
00:25That must look stupid in the park.
00:27My rubbish hair, my trousers baggy around my arse and t-shirt tight over my belly, my thin legs.
00:37People must think I look like a clown.
00:39Or they would, if anyone was looking at me.
00:45Every day now I walk in circles, past the dead trees, whatever the weather, the wind, the drizzle, the white skies.
00:52I go over what happened.
00:54Where's Bell?
00:55Well, Lisa Bell.
01:00Others.
01:01Essex.
01:03It hurts.
01:05There's nothing else I think about.
01:06Every day.
01:07I hoped it would get less painful over the years.
01:10But it hasn't.
01:11My name is Jason.
01:19I became part of the story of West Bell when I came down from the north.
01:22And going back wasn't an option.
01:24I was moving from place to place, following work, labouring on building sites.
01:27Nothing skilled.
01:29It's a job where they don't ask too many questions.
01:30You know, they take you on, leave you to it.
01:32It's a sad little life when you're 17, but it suited me.
01:36I wanted a low profile.
01:39Essex was just somewhere I ended up.
01:41Could have been anywhere.
01:42I didn't earn much, so I'd be in cheap digs and small and dirty with smells that gave me headaches.
01:49I'd spend no time in them and I went to a pub most nights.
01:51That's how I met Wes.
01:58He was the first person to take a real interest in me and want to be my friend.
02:07But what I know now that I didn't know then is that Wes was also a very, very bad man.
02:19Perhaps the worst kind of man there is.
02:21Like a pork chop.
02:26He gnawed it.
02:28I mean, I've heard a fox who's chewing their legs off, but not people chewing their arms off.
02:32Stick another vodka in there, please, Tony.
02:34Coming up.
02:35I wouldn't want to bite my own arm off.
02:37No, you wouldn't, Tony.
02:38But that makes me reckons he did.
02:40He said he tripped over in a forest and fell into a bear trap arm first.
02:44And the evidence is on his side.
02:46I mean, he ain't got an arm anymore, has he?
02:48And he did go to Canada.
02:49We got the postcard.
02:50But he's a bullshitter.
02:52That's just the way he is.
02:53He's a prick.
02:54You don't know when to believe him.
02:55Then again, it could very well be true.
02:59I'd have a problem doing that.
03:01I could chew your arm off on your tongue.
03:02Act of kindness and all that.
03:04I wouldn't have to take the sink my teeth into your arm for the greater good.
03:07But my own arm?
03:08Nah, that'd be a very different matter.
03:11I don't think I'll get as far as the bone.
03:12It'd be too weird.
03:15Didn't Mickey move back to Ireland?
03:16Yeah.
03:17Anyway, his wife said he lost it in a car door accident.
03:20What's that shit said?
03:21I was feeling self-conscious.
03:24He was staring at me.
03:25Bite a lager, please.
03:26Coming up.
03:27You in a trade, mate?
03:29Builder, yeah.
03:30Takes one to know one.
03:31I'm not sorry I keep this brick dust on your trousers.
03:34You working on the new flats?
03:35Yeah, up the hill.
03:36Staying in the B&B?
03:37That's right.
03:38Most of the boys up there have got a woman on the go.
03:40And she's married.
03:41Have you got a special lady?
03:43No, not really.
03:44Gay, are you?
03:44No.
03:45Do you like tits?
03:46I do, yeah.
03:47Me too.
03:48Tits and bunk-ups.
03:49I'm married.
03:49What's your favourite type of bra?
03:52This is a bit...
03:53Go on, what do you like?
03:55I don't know.
03:56Silky ones, I suppose.
03:57Silky ones.
03:58Ooh, fetish bloke, are you?
04:00Bondage boy.
04:01No, I'm not an expert.
04:02I was just saying...
04:03What are you talking about silky bras for, then?
04:05Do you wear them?
04:06Transvestite on a night off, are you, mate?
04:08Do they do bras for boys of your height?
04:10No, I'm not...
04:10I didn't say...
04:13You're getting me out of here.
04:16Your face!
04:18If I was you, I would have told me to piss off five minutes ago, eh, Tone?
04:22Got to take a wind-up if you drink in here.
04:24Here you go, mate.
04:26Pretty funny, I suppose, aren't you?
04:27Let me buy you a chaser for that pint, all right?
04:30Shake my hand.
04:31What's your name?
04:32Jason.
04:32Ah, my name's Waste Bell.
04:38They call me Daisy.
04:40That's what they called me.
04:42I'd been going for two days.
04:44I needed a wash.
04:45I fell asleep on the train.
04:48That's when someone stole my bag with all the money I'd saved.
04:52It was a long way.
04:54After the train, there was a bus.
04:56At the last stop, I got off and started to walk.
05:00Didn't know where I was.
05:02Didn't know where I was going.
05:04I just walked.
05:06My feet felt raw.
05:07They hurt so much.
05:09But I kept on.
05:11I felt terrible and knackered, but I knew I was doing the right thing.
05:14If I didn't know where I was, then no one else would know where I was either.
05:19If they didn't know where I was, then they couldn't find me.
05:25Soon, I thought, I'll just fall over and pass out.
05:29Someone will find me on the side of the road and phone an ambulance.
05:34There was blood in my shoes.
05:36I was dirty all over.
05:39Dirty inside.
05:41But I was still going.
05:43It was getting dark.
05:46I don't like the dark.
05:48I got to a crossroads.
05:51There was an orange street lamp, a red telephone box, and a blue bench.
05:56A woman was sitting there.
05:57I sat down.
05:59It was over.
06:02The woman smiled at me.
06:05This is the person who will call the ambulance, I thought.
06:08And that's the phone box she'll use.
06:11The woman was Lisa Bell.
06:13Wes bought me drinks all night.
06:17He insisted.
06:19He talked about sex.
06:21It was his favourite subject.
06:22He wanted to know how many girls I'd slept with.
06:24Had I been with a prostitute?
06:25What was my favourite position?
06:28Later, I was drunk.
06:29I didn't notice.
06:30He followed me into the toilets.
06:32At the urinal, he looked round my shoulder.
06:34I don't think I dreamt that.
06:39By ten, the pub was busy.
06:41Oh, look over my shoulder.
06:43Now, don't make it look like you're looking.
06:46Stalled at the bar, see ya?
06:47In the boob tube.
06:49Boob tube?
06:50Dark out.
06:51Wearing red stockings and a men's skirt.
06:53What do you think?
06:54Oh.
06:55I don't think she's wearing any.
06:57Did she just cross her legs?
06:58Yeah, she did.
06:59That's my sister.
07:00She's looking at me.
07:01Perhaps she likes ya.
07:04Has she got a boyfriend?
07:05What do you think?
07:07She's coming over.
07:07Act natural.
07:09All right, Wesley.
07:11Mmm.
07:12Born cocktail?
07:13Give him a try, sis.
07:15Mmm.
07:16Tasty.
07:17Who's your new friend?
07:18Got big muscles, hasn't he?
07:19Hello, handsome.
07:21Her name's Lisa, Jason.
07:23How are you, Lisa?
07:24Do you like my legs, Jason?
07:26They're my fourth favourite part of my body.
07:28Lovely pins, aren't they, Jason?
07:30Very nice.
07:31I'm proud of their smoothness.
07:33Here, put your hand on them.
07:34Have a feel of the skin.
07:38Uh, they are smooth.
07:42That's it.
07:43And if you feel upwards, that's it.
07:45Good boy.
07:46All the way.
07:47Up to my house.
07:51I can't remember how they got me back to their house.
07:55I was blind drunk.
07:56I could barely walk.
07:58But within 15 minutes of meeting Lisa, I was in her bed.
08:02And she was in it with me.
08:04And we were doing it.
08:07Oh.
08:08I can't.
08:11That's Jason's step.
08:13Keep banging.
08:14Don't blow it, yeah.
08:15Oh, that's the spot.
08:17Keep it there.
08:18Keep it there.
08:19I can't.
08:20Keep it there.
08:21Don't blow it.
08:22Oh, hit that more.
08:23Hit that more.
08:24Good boy.
08:25Go on, my son.
08:26Eh?
08:28Ignore him.
08:29Keep it there.
08:30Keep the water on.
08:31Keep going.
08:31Don't blow it.
08:32Ignore me.
08:33I'm not here.
08:33Oh.
08:34Oh.
08:35Oh.
08:35Oh.
08:36Oh.
08:36Oh.
08:36My feet were throbbing.
08:40I was on the blue bench.
08:43Lisa looked at me.
08:44I don't know why.
08:46I wasn't worth looking at.
08:47But she did.
08:49She really looked at me.
08:51Then she leant over.
08:53She had a soft face.
08:55And her voice was quiet.
08:56She asked if I was all right.
09:00I started to cry.
09:02I'd done so well holding the tears back all that time.
09:06But she cared.
09:08So they came out.
09:09I really sobbed.
09:11I said sorry for being dirty.
09:13She told me I needed looking after.
09:17She put her arm around me.
09:20Right around me.
09:21It was so long since anyone had touched me like that.
09:25I started to cry again.
09:28Some of our neighbors were watching as we came down the street and went into the house.
09:33She ran me a bath and lent me perfume to help with my smell.
09:35I lay in the hot water, really still.
09:40Hoping that I wasn't being too much trouble or outstaying my welcome.
09:45Lisa's son, Ian, made soup from a tin.
09:49Really thick soup.
09:52Ian was younger than me.
09:53About thirteen.
09:55But seemed older.
09:57He had a naughty face.
09:59When you looked in his eyes, you could tell he was smart.
10:03He didn't say much.
10:04But he did whisper in my ear.
10:07He said he liked my black hair.
10:10Those were the first words he said to me.
10:12It was a sweet thing to say.
10:14And it made me blush.
10:17Lisa said there was a lodger living in the house, too.
10:20But he wasn't around.
10:21He was either at work or in his room.
10:24Lisa was like an older sister, the way she talked.
10:27She asked me if I had a boyfriend.
10:29And how old I was.
10:31I added a year to make myself sixteen.
10:34She said I could stay overnight if I wanted.
10:37She could tell I had problems.
10:40But no questions.
10:42Then she said she was sure it would be okay with her husband, too.
10:45I didn't want him to come home.
10:48He might not want me in his house.
10:52Why would he?
10:54It was selfish of me.
10:55But I couldn't help feeling like that because everyone had been so nice.
10:59And I didn't want it ruined.
11:01I sat with Lisa and Ian watching the telly.
11:05The living room was nice.
11:07All bright because they had a fluorescent light.
11:09It buzzed, but it made everything look clear.
11:14Lisa's husband was due home any time.
11:17Woke up the next morning and didn't know where I was.
11:20In the sunlight, the bedroom was a shock.
11:22The burgundy and gold wallpaper, maroon carpet, faint smell of excrement.
11:28Lisa looked ugly with her makeup smeared all over her face.
11:31I had a headache like a bus was parked on my face.
11:33A dry mouth and my balls were very sore.
11:35You wait, mate.
11:39You want to go again?
11:41Oh.
11:43Is it morning?
11:45You slept like a corpse.
11:51Your makeup has...
11:53We've done 12 positions.
11:55Don't be offended if I smudge my lipstick.
11:58Morning, morning.
12:00How are we all doing?
12:03You've caught me in bed with your sister.
12:05She's not my sister.
12:10She's my wife.
12:12Eh?
12:12Role play, weren't it?
12:13Yeah, sometimes with father and daughter or total strangers.
12:16Makes it more exciting.
12:18Oh, I'm ready to go again.
12:20What time is it?
12:22Never mind the time.
12:24You two have a Donald Duck while I put the breakfast on.
12:27Have a fry-up, shall we?
12:29Look, I know what you're all thinking.
12:32Yes, they were eccentric, but the swings are, aren't they?
12:35They were friendly.
12:37Odd.
12:38Harmless.
12:39Welcoming.
12:41And it was a big breakfast.
12:42There he is.
12:52Good shower?
12:53Yeah, thanks.
12:55Sit down, Jay.
12:55Sit down.
12:56Just about to dish up.
12:59Sugar in your tea?
13:00Uh, just one, please.
13:02I bet this is better than that B&B.
13:04Oh, you hear stories about them places.
13:08I couldn't get any worse.
13:09Let's...
13:10Mmm.
13:17Mmm.
13:18This bacon's good.
13:20Yeah, so's the sausage.
13:21Stop it.
13:22Ha ha ha.
13:26How long you contracted with doing those flats?
13:28By the week.
13:29So you don't know where you are with a contract like that?
13:32What do you think, Lisa?
13:34I'll ask him.
13:35I know you're dying to.
13:37We don't want to see you back in that B&B, mate.
13:40Not while we've got a spare room here.
13:43Yeah, but...
13:43Never mind about the money.
13:45Yeah, we'll sort something out.
13:47I didn't have many options.
13:50The decor of the house was crappy.
13:52It had plastic horses and ducks everywhere.
13:55But not worse than the B&B.
13:57I moved in that afternoon.
14:00Right, here we are, then.
14:01That's the wardrobe.
14:02That's the bed.
14:04Stop me if I'm blinding you with science.
14:06It's much better than I'm used to.
14:08Our bedroom is directly above.
14:10I'll keep the noise down.
14:11Oh, it's not your noise I'm worried about.
14:13Make as much racket as you like.
14:14There's something I want to talk about, though.
14:17I can give you what I pay.
14:18No, no, no.
14:19Not that, Chase.
14:20It's Lisa.
14:21I'll pay her a visit every now and then.
14:23Upstairs.
14:24No, keep her happy.
14:25She's got a big appetite.
14:27She's been in magazines, you know.
14:29I mean, she's not a bad looker, is she?
14:31Hey.
14:33And that became the deal.
14:35Once or twice a week, more,
14:37if no one down the pub was willing,
14:38I slept with Lisa.
14:41Huh.
14:42Like part of the rent.
14:45I didn't mind.
14:46I wasn't wild about it,
14:47but I didn't mind.
14:48I could get turned on by a whistle back then.
14:51But it wasn't just that.
14:53It was Wes.
14:55He really wanted me to stay.
14:58He wanted to be mates.
15:01That's what grew between us.
15:03A friendship.
15:04For God's sake, be nice about it.
15:06Why, what has he done?
15:07You'll see.
15:08Took him hours.
15:09Oh, here he comes.
15:13Ta-da!
15:16What do you think?
15:19You've baked me a cake.
15:21To celebrate your moving in.
15:23Look at the icing on that.
15:25It's got cum on it.
15:27Should have been welcome,
15:28but I had problems with the icing bag.
15:30I'll cut us all the slime.
15:31Happy days!
15:34You actually made me a cake.
15:37Don't get emotional.
15:38You haven't tasted it yet.
15:40I'll tell you what I'll go nice with this.
15:42Vodka.
15:44We spent my first night getting drunk in the sitting room.
15:47Oh, with the buzzing fluorescent light.
15:50I'd only been there a couple of days
15:51when Wes asked me to help him on one of his jobs.
15:53Be quick of the two of us.
15:58Here, can you lay bricks?
15:59I've seen it, Don.
16:00Haven't they taught you on site?
16:02No, they don't have time.
16:03Yeah, job and done, is it?
16:05That's a shame.
16:06You need core skills to be an all-rounder like me.
16:09I'm only a labourer.
16:11You'll soon pick up, Brick Lane.
16:12Jason, I'm going to tuck you under my wing.
16:19So, he tucked me under his wing.
16:22He taught me how to lay bricks that afternoon.
16:26Wes was cheerful and chatty and likeable and crude and rough.
16:31He made you laugh.
16:33After that, I did more jobs with him
16:34and each time I learnt more skills,
16:36so the next step felt natural too.
16:39He asked me if I wanted to go full-time with him.
16:44It made perfect sense.
16:46So, I quit my labouring job.
16:49No, listen, come, a toast.
16:51So, Wes Bell and his apprentice.
16:55Wes Bell and his apprentice.
16:57Hey!
16:57Cheers!
16:59You dozy kid!
17:03And all this time, of course,
17:05I was shagging his wife.
17:09Hit me with it, Jason!
17:13Go on!
17:15Slap it hard!
17:17And in case you hadn't noticed,
17:18my gag slipped off.
17:21Oh, that's better.
17:25Before I moved into the house,
17:28I was on a missing list.
17:30And I was very...
17:32unhappy.
17:33And suddenly,
17:35I went from being alone
17:37to having a place to live,
17:38a permanent job
17:39and a friendly little family.
17:42All in one go.
17:43And it was a family too.
17:46Wes,
17:47Lisa,
17:48their boy,
17:49and me.
17:51There were a couple of guest rooms too
17:52where people came to stay at different times
17:54and the bells kept an open door policy.
17:57Waves and strays would come and go all the time.
17:59Always temporary though.
18:01I became a permanent fixture.
18:02I didn't see much of their son, Ian.
18:06I didn't go downstairs much.
18:09It was an unusual set-up.
18:11Especially the sex.
18:13But I got into the rhythm of life in the house.
18:17Although in saying that,
18:18my upbringing had taught me to trust no one
18:19and if I'm honest,
18:21that hadn't changed.
18:22And then he came in.
18:26Lisa's husband,
18:27Wes.
18:29He introduced himself.
18:31Friendly and nice,
18:32with a big smile.
18:34He wasn't surprised to see me.
18:36He was pleased.
18:38He thought it was right that I should stay.
18:40He said there was a room downstairs
18:42in the basement with a bed
18:43and it was a shame that it was going to waste.
18:46He wasn't angry.
18:47He wasn't angry at all.
18:50The way he reacted to me
18:51made me want to cry again.
18:54He told me to make myself at home.
18:57As he said it,
18:58he put his hand on my shoulder
18:59and I flinched.
19:01Wes said sorry straight away
19:04and I said sorry.
19:06And that made us both laugh.
19:08A little bit.
19:09And smile.
19:10A little bit.
19:13And before I knew it,
19:15it was bedtime.
19:18All families have their own rules
19:19and ways of going about things.
19:21I noticed that Wes did a lot of the chores
19:23around the house.
19:25Lisa's favourite position
19:26was lying on the settee
19:27in front of the telly
19:27watching a video,
19:28twiddling her hair,
19:29picking fluff out of her belly buttons.
19:31All right?
19:34Wes's not moving up.
19:36He's gone to the supermarket.
19:37Oh, good.
19:38We've run out of chips.
19:40You had a busy day?
19:44Are you trying to say something, Jase?
19:46No.
19:47Sounded like it.
19:49It's just...
19:51Look, Wes has been at work all day.
19:53Then he has to go to the shops.
19:54I mean, what have you been doing?
19:56Mind your own fucking business, you prick.
19:59What goes on between me and Wes
20:01is between me and Wes?
20:02If you don't like it,
20:03you can pack your rucksack.
20:06They had their own rules.
20:09I had to accept that.
20:11My bedroom didn't have a window
20:13and it was a little bit damp.
20:15But it did have a sink
20:17and it was peaceful down there.
20:20Silent.
20:21And it was my room.
20:24Lisa had given me a t-shirt
20:25to wear as a nightie.
20:27It had a picture of Donald Duck on it.
20:30I didn't do what I normally do
20:31when I'm in bed.
20:33I didn't cry.
20:35I liked lying there.
20:37No one knew where I was.
20:39No one could find me.
20:40Then there was a tap on the door.
20:44Wes came in.
20:46He sat on the edge of the bed.
20:48He had a mug of hot chocolate.
20:51He said he could tell
20:53that I'd had trouble in the past
20:54and he assumed it was my dad.
20:57I sipped the thick chocolate.
21:00Then he wanted to kiss me on the forehead
21:02and I didn't mind.
21:05So he did.
21:07And then he went.
21:10I slept for the first time in ages.
21:13It was a miracle.
21:15I was being saved.
21:18They weren't faithful to each other sex-wise.
21:21Not like normal couples.
21:22But they were devoted to each other.
21:25I think I was envious.
21:28I never dreamt that that would happen to me.
21:33Stop doing that.
21:34It's irritating.
21:35Piss off, you fat bitch.
21:37You stink like a toilet brush.
21:38You stink like fish crap.
21:40Go knob a ant.
21:42Go sit on a tramp's bone.
21:45Only difference between you
21:47and a bucket of shit
21:47is the bucket.
21:49Feeling randy, are we?
21:50Not for your chip-a-lota, thanks.
21:52Get stuffed.
21:53Up your arse.
21:55Give us a wank.
21:59Alright.
22:00But you've got to be done
22:00before slept with your master, chef.
22:05From the moment they met,
22:06they hit it off.
22:07I was on the disco floor.
22:11She was coming out of Carsey with her mate.
22:14I gave my brother a nudge and said,
22:16look at her.
22:17I didn't notice him.
22:18They went over to the two spotty boys
22:20who were next to the squash table.
22:21Squash table?
22:22Lemon squash.
22:23It was a scout art.
22:24No booze allowed.
22:24I'd had half a bottle of vodka before.
22:26How old was everyone?
22:27Fifteen, mostly.
22:29I was quite a bit older.
22:30My boy put his hand on my bum.
22:32I've seen enough.
22:34I was ready for his nod,
22:34but as we started to lean in,
22:36this hand came between us
22:37into the boy's face,
22:38pushing him away.
22:39Very firm.
22:40I was very Lee Marvin about it.
22:42I told him to get stuffed.
22:43Boy went off,
22:44so it's just me and this bloke
22:45with lots of hair.
22:45He legged it.
22:46Quite comical.
22:47I didn't know who Wes was,
22:48but I liked the way he said
22:50get stuffed.
22:51We stared at each other for ages.
22:54Felt like a week.
22:55He looked vulnerable.
22:57And violent.
22:58That was Kurt Douglas back then.
23:00I had a spinning feeling,
23:01but we wasn't dancing.
23:03I took her outside.
23:05His fingers round my arm.
23:06Where did you go?
23:07Up to the horse fields.
23:09Horses?
23:10Straight out the lane.
23:11Into the biggest field.
23:12We still hadn't said a word to each other,
23:14but it was very romantic.
23:15You can see the hole of Essex
23:16from that field.
23:17Bowrell Hill.
23:19It's quite high up.
23:19Essex spreads out beneath you.
23:21All the street lamps shining.
23:22You feel you own it.
23:24You're part of it.
23:25Puts you in awe.
23:27Really romantic.
23:28He sort of marched me there.
23:30Great spot.
23:31He lifted my skirt up.
23:32It was one of those nights
23:33where you could see all the stars.
23:35Looked me over,
23:36touched me,
23:36then undid himself.
23:39A meeting of minds.
23:40Last about seven seconds
23:42and his penis was tiny.
23:47Seven seconds of ecstasy, darling.
23:49Oh, I've never been so disappointed.
23:51Oh, it was all worked out.
23:52And he had a smile on his face.
23:54Well, job done.
23:55Anyone else would have been ashamed.
23:57Have we got that far?
23:58There have been times
23:59it's gone off before I've left the house.
24:03Men don't talk like that.
24:05I was pretty Tom Hanks about it.
24:07It was different.
24:08Charming.
24:09She wanted to know
24:10if it had last longer
24:11if we waited for a bit.
24:12He said no.
24:14If you can't have a laugh
24:15about these things,
24:16you might as well
24:16kick your own head in.
24:18For future reference,
24:19I asked him
24:20if he was the jealous type.
24:22No, your limitations.
24:24I've found my Mr. Wright.
24:26And that was how you met?
24:28Mad, didn't it?
24:30They met like animals.
24:31The next morning,
24:34I went up to the kitchen
24:35and Wes was there.
24:36He gave me a cup of tea
24:37and a bowl of Cocoa Pops.
24:40He said he'd had a conversation
24:41with Lisa
24:42and they both agreed
24:43that if I wanted to stay,
24:44I was welcome.
24:46I could pay my way
24:46by doing jobs.
24:48Laundry, ironing, cooking.
24:50Like a housekeeper, sort of.
24:53I've never been a lucky person,
24:56but I felt lucky that morning.
24:59Lisa was so pleased
25:00when I said yes
25:00that she gave me the perfume.
25:02The one she'd lent me.
25:04A big bottle.
25:05I said I'd wear it every day.
25:08I did.
25:10I got on well with everyone.
25:13Lisa and Wes were brilliant.
25:16I didn't have to answer
25:17any questions.
25:18I didn't have to go back.
25:20The house was perfect.
25:23It was my home.
25:26I got fed up
25:27with having sex with Lisa.
25:28I did it,
25:29but I didn't fancy her.
25:30I wasn't the only person
25:31she was having sex with either.
25:33How once a week
25:33they'd do their trick
25:34in the pub.
25:35One step, mate.
25:36That's it.
25:39Come on, Wes.
25:40Bring him up.
25:41He's coming.
25:42No, not that door, mate.
25:44Up the stairs.
25:45You all right out there?
25:46Sorry, Jase.
25:48I'm not drunk.
25:50No, of course you're not.
25:51Go on up there.
25:53Don't take your trousers up
25:54until we get there.
25:56Oh, no, don't worry.
25:57You might as well leave them on.
25:59Bye.
26:00It happened once a week
26:01at first,
26:02but slowly,
26:03gradually,
26:04over months and months,
26:05it went from once a week
26:06to twice a week
26:07to three times a week
26:08until they were bringing
26:08people back every night.
26:10I could never be sure
26:11exactly what was going on.
26:12Why are you some Indian men?
26:14I'm bald.
26:15I thought you wanted African men.
26:17I want varieties.
26:19Poles, Portuguese.
26:20I want women as well.
26:21I've had a woman for weeks.
26:22What's the matter with you?
26:23All right, don't do your nut.
26:24Don't you do your nut.
26:26And don't let me down, Wes.
26:28Don't let me down.
26:29Don't let me down.
26:32Soon the men weren't
26:33only coming at night.
26:34It was any time.
26:35They all had to pass my room.
26:37I stopped going upstairs for sakes.
26:39I couldn't face it anymore.
26:42Right.
26:43I'll fix our fuse in the kettle.
26:45Anything else you need doing?
26:46Oh, I love this song.
26:47Yeah.
26:51So, is there anything
26:52that needs doing?
26:53Only me, Jason.
26:55I need doing.
26:59Oh, you're on the gin.
27:02So what?
27:03You haven't been up
27:04to see me for ages.
27:05No.
27:06I thought we had an agreement.
27:07Well, you know, you're always
27:09so busy with others.
27:10Well, that's not the point, is it?
27:14Should I...
27:18Oh, let's not piss about, Jason.
27:19I was getting bored
27:20of your moves anyway.
27:23Let's not worry about it.
27:24Okay.
27:27Are we okay?
27:29Where's the lights
27:30of you being around?
27:32We're mates.
27:33Yeah, we'll leave things there.
27:37Unless things change.
27:39Found it hard to look at her.
27:41It was the thought of all those
27:42naked bodies in her bed.
27:43All that sweat and rubbing.
27:46Wes?
27:47Yes, mate?
27:49Is Lisa a prostitute?
27:50I suppose she is, yeah.
27:55I saw a man giving her money.
27:57It must have been in his 70s.
27:58A bit scabby.
28:00Well, she caters for every taste.
28:03I don't shag her anymore.
28:05I noticed.
28:07It's a shame.
28:08But it's up to you, Jase.
28:11Lisa's got her needs.
28:12I like to see her looked after.
28:15Don't worry about it, mate.
28:18Not going to come between us
28:19being pals, is it?
28:21Lisa was putting on weight.
28:23And I don't think she was
28:24washing herself properly.
28:25She used strong perfume.
28:27And that was the smell
28:27of the staircase.
28:28Now, perfume and sex.
28:32The men coming to the house
28:33were desperate.
28:36One of my jobs
28:37was to go to the local shop.
28:39It was nice being trusted
28:40with money.
28:42But I didn't like going out.
28:45People stared at me
28:46and whispered to each other.
28:47Made me feel awkward.
28:49Sometimes they said things.
28:51A woman stopped me
28:52in the street.
28:54She was old
28:54and seemed nice at first.
28:56She wanted to know
28:57if I was all right.
28:59I said that I was.
29:00She rubbed my arm
29:01and told me to get away
29:02from that house
29:03and those people.
29:05I walked away.
29:07She started shouting
29:08nasty things.
29:09She called me
29:10a filthy pig.
29:12I wanted to get back
29:13to the house.
29:14I was walking fast
29:16and was trying
29:17not to cry.
29:18A gang of girls
29:19across the street
29:20saw me
29:20and started shouting things.
29:22One of them
29:23threw a stone.
29:24It caught me
29:24on the side of the head.
29:26They came over
29:27and blocked my way
29:28and pushed me
29:29until I fell on the floor.
29:30Then they spat at me.
29:32I was terrified.
29:34I ran back to the house,
29:35shaking.
29:36My whole body.
29:38I couldn't stop
29:39the shaking.
29:41I couldn't control it.
29:44Ian found me
29:45in the laundry room
29:46curled in a ball.
29:48He wanted to know
29:49if Wes or Lisa
29:50had done something to me.
29:52My head was bleeding.
29:55It was when we were
29:56working together
29:57that Wes was at his best.
29:59He was always enthusiastic.
30:01He loved work.
30:04He was always
30:04decorating the house too.
30:05The cellar
30:07and the garden
30:08were his favourite places.
30:10Always had a project on.
30:12But every few months
30:14he liked to change things.
30:16With Lisa spending
30:17more time in bed
30:18the bedroom
30:19became Wes's focus
30:20for a while.
30:21I'm not there.
30:22I'm over there.
30:23No, wait a minute.
30:24This place has been
30:25out of four.
30:26Yeah, I want to party
30:27in the field.
30:28Oh, is that why
30:28you want a fridge?
30:29For nibbles?
30:30Nibbles, you know.
30:31People don't like warm wine.
30:33You want to get
30:33Jason and drunk,
30:34is that it?
30:34It's the only way
30:36you'd keep him
30:36on his back.
30:37Don't bring me into it.
30:38I want to get peace
30:39like a party.
30:40What's Jason got to do
30:41with it?
30:41You tell me what
30:42Jason's got to do
30:43with it.
30:44Nothing.
30:44That's what Jason's
30:45got to do with it.
30:46Nothing.
30:46I just want a bar.
30:47We've got a bar.
30:48Not up here, we haven't.
30:50You want a bar
30:51in your bedroom.
30:52Oh, don't you?
30:53Hey, let's use
30:54your imagination with me.
30:55Oh, wait a minute.
30:58I'll use my imagination
31:00and I'll give you a bar.
31:02That is what I want,
31:07you stupid sod.
31:20Oh, you'll give me
31:22an heartache one day.
31:23You will.
31:24All right.
31:25All right.
31:27And I'll take care of it.
31:28You know I'll do
31:31anything with you.
31:31Oh, thanks, Liz.
31:34You're very welcome,
31:35darling.
31:36Another thing, right?
31:37I want a big screen
31:38on that wall for porn.
31:41Yeah?
31:42Right.
31:45Of course Wes and Lisa
31:46hadn't done anything to me.
31:48That's what I told Ian.
31:50Then I told him about
31:51the girls in the street
31:52and the pushing
31:53and the spitting
31:54and the stone
31:56and the old woman.
31:56I didn't want
31:58to go back outside
31:59but he made me.
32:02He had his naughty face.
32:04When he had that face
32:05he wasn't scared of anything
32:06and looked a lot older
32:08than he was.
32:09We went looking
32:10for the girl gang
32:11but they were gone.
32:13We found a couple
32:14of teenage lads
32:15on the corner instead.
32:17They made a comment
32:17as we passed.
32:19Ian spun around
32:20straight away
32:21and started shouting
32:22at them.
32:23I was glad
32:24he was on my side.
32:25He was half the lad's size
32:27but he was ready
32:28to fight.
32:30He went after them
32:31pushed them
32:32screamed at them.
32:33He was wild
32:34with anger.
32:35The boys were scared
32:36and walked off.
32:39I was shaking again
32:41like I do.
32:43Ian put his arm
32:43around me
32:44and said everything
32:45would be all right.
32:47He was only little
32:47but he made me
32:49feel better.
32:50I said I was amazed
32:51how angry he got.
32:52He said he got it
32:55from his mother
32:55and father.
32:58I had a dream
32:59one night
32:59that the house
33:00was a stone
33:00and everyone
33:02was an insect
33:03under it
33:04crawling around
33:06in the shadows.
33:08We all had
33:09the same eyes.
33:13The men
33:13visiting Lisa
33:14got worse.
33:16They had those
33:16eyes too
33:17when they passed
33:18me on the stairs.
33:20Dirty
33:20and dead.
33:24Things happened
33:25at night
33:25so I didn't
33:26always know
33:27when I was
33:27dreaming
33:28and when I
33:29wasn't.
33:42Bloody
33:43was the
33:48at night.
33:49So
33:51I
33:53was
33:55at night
34:00.
34:01I
34:02was
34:02but
34:02I
34:02was
34:03I
34:03was
34:04that
34:04I
34:05was
34:05I
34:06was
34:07was
34:07that
34:07I
34:08was
34:08all
34:09was
34:09what
34:09I
34:10was
34:11I
34:11was
34:11What are you doing, Wes?
34:15Feeling a bath.
34:16What? This is a bedroom.
34:18Not anymore. It's a bathroom now.
34:21You know it's half three in the morning.
34:22Yes.
34:24Lisa wants another bathroom.
34:27I thought I heard crying and a rat.
34:30You must have been dreaming.
34:31It's half three in the morning.
34:34What, am I dreaming now?
34:36I don't know.
34:39You're working late.
34:41No, I'm not, Jase.
34:43I'm working early.
34:53In every street, there's that house.
34:57I'm the one mothers tell kids to stay away from.
35:01I was living in that house.
35:05We got back to the house.
35:08Ian told me to wait in the hallway while he went upstairs.
35:11I could hear him going up and up and up right to the top to Wes and Lisa's bedroom.
35:18I'd never been up there.
35:21When he came down, he had a bottle of gin from Lisa's fridge, he said.
35:27We went out again.
35:29He took me along a lane, up the hill, and into a field with horses.
35:33It was called Bower Hill.
35:37High up, we could see the whole of Essex.
35:42Ian opened the bottle.
35:44I had two sips and started giggling.
35:47Ian had a gulp.
35:48He giggled, too.
35:50We laid on our backs on the grass and giggled.
35:53We stayed there for ages, talking about nothing.
35:56After a while, I realized we were holding hands.
36:03We looked down over Essex.
36:05The houses.
36:07The streets.
36:08The fields.
36:10All tiny below us.
36:12It was like Essex belonged to us.
36:15Ian leant towards me.
36:16And I thought he was going to kiss me.
36:20But he didn't.
36:22He whispered in my ear.
36:24He said he liked my black hair.
36:27Just like before.
36:29The first words he said to me.
36:34When it got dark, it was time to go.
36:39I'm thinking of moving out.
36:44We're yelling, aren't we?
36:45Things are changing, especially Lisa.
36:48You know what she's like.
36:49She gets bored by normal stuff.
36:52I'm not sure what normal is anymore.
36:54I don't know what I'd do without you.
36:58Did you drill a hole in my bedroom wall?
37:00I did, yeah.
37:01In spiral.
37:02So you can look in?
37:03That's right.
37:04What for?
37:04I got the wrong wall.
37:06I thought it was little Ian's room.
37:08Oh.
37:09You've got to keep an eye on them, haven't you?
37:11Just like my daddy kept an eye on me.
37:13Just like my daddy and me.
37:14Just like my daddy.
37:15Me.
37:16You've been doing a lot of drilling, Wes.
37:19Spy holes spice up the love life.
37:21Two-way mirrors.
37:22Digital video.
37:24Lisa had two blokes on the go the other night.
37:26But she said it felt like three because I was watching through an hole.
37:31Makes me feel like I'm involved.
37:34It makes me feel like I'm...
37:35God.
37:38Look.
37:42Listen to me.
37:44I'm going to be honest.
37:47I want you to stay, Jase.
37:48You mean a lot to me.
37:51You're my best mate.
37:52I love you.
37:54Not in that way, though.
37:58I only heard the good things that Wes said to me.
38:00My best mate.
38:01Mean a lot.
38:02I was flattered.
38:03I decided to stay in the house because I believed in Wes.
38:07And anyway, I...
38:09I don't think I could have left even if I wanted to.
38:12I didn't know how to leave someone who...
38:17Loved me.
38:20When we got back, the house was quiet and dark.
38:23We cracked inside on our tiptoes.
38:27Suddenly the lights came on and Lisa and Wes appeared.
38:30They didn't look happy.
38:32They told me to go to my room.
38:34And Wes grabbed Ian's arm really tight.
38:37Wes took Ian upstairs.
38:39Lisa watched me go down to my room.
38:42They were right.
38:44We'd done wrong.
38:46I put on my Donald Duck Nighty and got under the duvet.
38:50I thought about Ian.
38:52How much I liked him.
38:55We'd had such a nice day together.
38:57I hoped he wasn't in too much trouble.
39:00I drank some of the gin, too.
39:03I felt guilty.
39:04I couldn't sleep.
39:06I couldn't sleep for ages.
39:09So I got up and went upstairs.
39:13I could hear noises.
39:16When you live with odd people, you become odd, too.
39:18You're part of it.
39:19You can't see yourself anymore.
39:21Nothing is clear or straightforward.
39:23I remember that night in the springtime.
39:29I was in bed.
39:31And the sounds in the house were as bad as ever.
39:33Coming from above.
39:37I was in another dream.
39:39I mean, who did they have up there?
39:40Well, Filthy Animal was up there tonight.
39:42It was really late, but people were up.
39:46I thought I could hear Ian's voice.
39:48But I wasn't sure.
39:51The sounds were desperate.
39:53I heard struggles before in the house.
39:55Lisa liked to experiment.
39:56But this time, it was different.
40:01It was the sound of unhappiness.
40:05It was the sound of a heart breaking.
40:06Oh, Jesus.
40:19I went out into the landing.
40:41That's where the noise was coming from.
40:43Upstairs.
40:43I had a choice.
40:50Go up.
40:53Or go down.
41:01I started to climb the stairs to see if I could find Ian.
41:04To see if I could help.
41:07But someone was coming down.
41:10But I was going up and someone was coming down.
41:12I'd made my decision.
41:14I wanted to get away from that sound.
41:18But there was someone on the stairs.
41:20Coming up.
41:21Blocking my way.
41:25She had a T-shirt with Donald Duck on it.
41:29She was a tiny thing.
41:31White skin and sad eyes.
41:33With beautiful black hair.
41:36He was a huge man.
41:38A giant.
41:38He was so big he could pick me up with one hand and swallow me whole if he wanted.
41:45Her look.
41:47The way she looked at me.
41:50Did she think I was going to...
41:52He was crying.
41:54It was like meeting a ghost.
41:56Or an angel.
41:58I could still hear Ian.
41:59I had to go up.
42:01But the giant was in my way.
42:02I was moving away from the sound.
42:05But she was going to face it.
42:08This tiny girl.
42:11That's when I did something.
42:13He looked very serious.
42:14I shook my head.
42:15And put my hand up.
42:17He shook his head.
42:18Meaning, don't go up there.
42:21That's what I was saying.
42:22He was certain.
42:23I shook my head.
42:24So I stopped and didn't go up.
42:28And we stood there facing each other.
42:31Eventually there was silence again.
42:33And after a while.
42:35The noises went away.
42:40I looked at her.
42:41Hoping that she might smile.
42:44But she didn't.
42:46She went back down the stairs and disappeared.
42:51And I sat there for an hour.
42:53And nothing happened.
42:57Except somewhere I could hear.
43:00Wes.
43:01Whistling.
43:05He whistled when he was working.
43:09Ian ran away in the night.
43:12That's what Lisa said the next morning.
43:15I never had the chance to say goodbye.
43:19No one talked about him after that.
43:21But I missed him.
43:25The next day I had a bad time at the shop.
43:28A woman shouted at me.
43:30Called me dirty.
43:31And said that I was Wes Bell's whore.
43:34I wasn't.
43:36When I got home.
43:37It was my turn to cook the dinner.
43:40I was doing egg and chips.
43:41But I made a mess of it.
43:43The egg yolks broke.
43:44And the chips burnt.
43:46I hadn't done a good job.
43:47And I felt ashamed.
43:49Wes didn't mind.
43:49He'd eat anything burnt or not.
43:51But Lisa was angry.
43:53She grabbed me by the arm and ripped my top.
43:56I had to stand there in my bra.
43:58With Wes looking and everything.
44:01She shouted at me.
44:02She slapped me on the face.
44:04And when my head went down.
44:06She hit me on the top of my head.
44:09Her ring cut me.
44:10There was blood.
44:11I didn't have much to do in that house.
44:15Why couldn't I get the little bits I did have to do right?
44:19Why did I have to be so shaky and clumsy?
44:22Why did I have to be such a stupid, lazy little cow?
44:26A stupid, lazy little tramp off the street.
44:29I kept apologizing.
44:31I was really sorry.
44:33I'd messed everything up.
44:35She screamed at me.
44:37Wes told me to go to my room.
44:38And I went straight there.
44:42I had to leave the house.
44:46Wes came down to my room later.
44:48He brought me a chip sandwich because he knew that I hadn't finished my dinner.
44:52She just had a temper sometimes.
44:54And it was her time of the month.
44:56So she was a bit over the top.
44:59He made me feel a lot better.
45:00I asked him if he would tell Lisa how sorry I was that I mucked everything up.
45:06I'd do anything to make things all right again.
45:09He gave me a kiss on the forehead and said it would all be forgotten by the morning.
45:15Then he smiled and winked and went.
45:19It was still quite early, so I wasn't ready to sleep.
45:22I read my book instead.
45:24The one Lisa had given me.
45:26By Jilly Cooper.
45:27I didn't let that girl go up the stairs, but perhaps that was just me being stupid.
45:34Wes was my friend.
45:36Wes was her father.
45:39I stayed in the house.
45:43I was still reading Jilly Cooper when Wes came back.
45:47He didn't knock.
45:48He came in and stood in front of me.
45:51Didn't say a word.
45:54Kissed my forehead.
45:55Then he started whistling.
46:00What did I really imagine was going on?
46:03I put Jilly Cooper down.
46:06Wes was whistling quietly.
46:09He had a black plastic bin bag.
46:11I thought he was collecting rubbish.
46:14But he wasn't.
46:15All I could smell in there was the perfume I was wearing.
46:22Lisa's perfume.
46:24I don't think he meant for me to die.
46:28Not then.
46:29I think it was an accident.
46:32Sort of.
46:34But my lungs tightened.
46:36Fast.
46:38You don't last long without air.
46:40There was pain.
46:45But it was over quickly.
46:49I was dead.
46:52I stayed in the house for a long time after that night.
46:55But it was different.
46:58I wasn't part of the family anymore.
47:01I was like a ghost in the house.
47:02Like I didn't exist.
47:08Then one day the police came and took Wes away.
47:12An anonymous tip-off.
47:14A concerned neighbour.
47:18Then they sent people round to dig up Wes's garden.
47:20It's nippy out there.
47:32They're going to dig into the night.
47:35They've got lamps.
47:38They started with mechanical diggers but...
47:41Now they're using spades as well.
47:44They kept Wes in.
47:47Arrested.
47:48They said so.
47:49They told me they dug for what.
47:51Have they found any more?
47:53Another two.
47:56They're digging deep.
47:58They blow a whistle when they find one.
48:02The diggers stop.
48:05Six so far.
48:08And you've been watching all day.
48:10I can't look away.
48:14Six.
48:16Doesn't look good, does it?
48:19How was he?
48:24He was making jokes.
48:26He had them all in love.
48:33Seven.
48:38No one came in.
48:40No one looked for me.
48:41I was left in the room all the next day.
48:45Lying there dead in my Donald Duck nighty.
48:49Then another day passed.
48:53The day after that, Wes came in.
48:55He put me into a huge green waste bag.
48:58And carried me over his shoulder.
49:01The sun had gone down when he took me into the garden.
49:03It must have taken a lot of work to dig that hole.
49:09When the police finished in the garden, they started on the house.
49:14They dug down under the floorboards and into the foundations.
49:18They looked inside the walls.
49:20They turned the place into a shell.
49:21They took me in.
49:25Questioned me at length.
49:26Investigated me.
49:29They weren't interested.
49:31They said I hadn't known what was going on.
49:33I didn't...
49:34But...
49:35But if...
49:36If I told that girl not to go upstairs,
49:40then surely that proves that...
49:41That I must have known something.
49:43I wasn't alone under the ground.
49:49Ian was there with me.
49:50And others.
49:53When they found me,
49:55the police were gentle.
49:57They reached in and pulled me out.
49:59It was a blue sky that day.
50:03One of the policemen cried when he saw my Donald Duck nighty.
50:07They had a box made of strong cardboard to put me in.
50:10They carried the box carefully to a van.
50:14And the van took me to a room that was cold and had a fluorescent light.
50:18I stayed there for a long time.
50:22Lisa denied everything.
50:26Wes accepted all responsibility.
50:29Twelve bodies were discovered in all.
50:32Four of them were killed before I arrived at the house.
50:36I felt responsible for them too.
50:38Daisy is not my real name.
50:43They couldn't identify my remains and no one had listed me missing.
50:47A police scientist nicknamed me Daisy because of the duck on my t-shirt.
50:51It was Donald, really.
50:52But they called me Daisy.
50:55When Wes was on remand,
50:57the prison officer followed a trail of blood leading from the showers to Wes's cell.
51:02When he got there, he found Wes sitting in a chair with his back to the door.
51:05It looked like he was waiting for someone.
51:06In fact, he had been kicked to death.
51:12Six different pairs of boots had done it.
51:16The guards had liked Wes.
51:19It was a laugh.
51:21If someone wrote the story of my life,
51:24they wouldn't know what to call me.
51:25When Lisa heard about Wes,
51:28she tried to rip her own eyes out.
51:32She was sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
51:36At a trial, she got life.
51:39Later, she found Jesus.
51:41But they won't be letting her out.
51:45Daisy isn't my real name.
51:48Daisy is the name they called me.
51:51I went back to the police.
51:52I wanted to give another statement.
51:54They had to understand that I was guilty.
51:58I told them everything again.
51:59Everything.
52:00About the conversations in the van,
52:01the men on the stairs,
52:02the perfume and sex,
52:03the building work,
52:04the nights down the pub,
52:05the porno films,
52:06the holes in the walls,
52:07the soup in the kitchen,
52:08the fluorescent light that buzzed,
52:11the Donald Duck before breakfast,
52:12the insects under the stone,
52:13the story of how Wes and Lisa first met
52:15and how I wished that they had never met
52:17because maybe that was what had done it.
52:19Then I told them about the look
52:20the tiny girl gave me
52:21and how I saw that look
52:23every time I closed my eyes.
52:25I told them about her beautiful black hair.
52:28About the way I shook my head.
52:31About sitting on the stairs
52:32and the whistling.
52:32And I told them about the I love you.
52:34I told them about the whistling.
52:36I told them everything.
52:39And they believed me.
52:40Well, they said that none of it was my fault.
52:44They didn't understand.
52:46They said,
52:47how could you have imagined
52:50what was going on?
52:55I told them that I was a coward.
52:59And that that tiny girl
53:00was going up the stairs to fix it all
53:03and that she was brave.
53:05And I was weak.
53:07I must have known what was going on
53:10because I shook my head.
53:12I knew what was going on.
53:13I knew what was going on.
53:16But I didn't know who I was
53:18because I fell for Wes.
53:21Because I was lonely.
53:24My real name is Beth.
53:27I went back to the house
53:36with a can of petrol
53:37to burn it to the ground.
53:39There was too much security
53:40keeping the drunks out.
53:42I couldn't get near it.
53:45I went to the horse field
53:46up the lane.
53:48Sat on the grass.
53:52You could see all the stars
53:53that night.
53:54Bower Hill.
53:55It looks down on Essex.
53:59You see it all
54:00spread out beneath you.
54:02All the street lamps shining.
54:06It made me feel alone.
54:09I poured the petrol over my head
54:11then let her match.
54:13It only hurt for a second.
54:15And once you've burnt
54:16your nerve endings off
54:17it stops hurting.
54:19But then there's no turning back.
54:22I went to it like a candle.
54:23The boy who fed the horses
54:27found me first.
54:29Then the police came.
54:34The coroner released
54:35what was left of me
54:36to the state.
54:37A man from the council
54:39came and collected me
54:40in my box.
54:42He took me to a local
54:43crematorium where I was
54:44cremated.
54:45If someone told the story
54:50of my life
54:50I wouldn't be
54:52the main character.
54:58I walk in the park now.
55:01The dead trees
55:01the white skies
55:03my baggy trousers
55:05my thin hair
55:06and big belly
55:07like a clown.
55:11I'd look stupid
55:12if anyone looked.
55:18I hoped the pain
55:19would ease
55:20over the years
55:21but it doesn't.
55:24The man took my ashes
55:35into the gardens
55:36attached to the crematorium.
55:38It was bright and sunny.
55:41A lovely day.
55:44He scattered me
55:45among the grasses
55:45and the flowers.
55:48Some of me
55:48drifted away
55:49in the wind.
55:49If someone told
55:54the story of my life
55:55I wouldn't be
55:56the main character.
55:58They wouldn't even
55:59give me the last line.
