00:00And as this carnival takes place in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, let's go live with our special envoy, Belén de los Santos, who is there, and tell us more about these festivities that are happening on the Caribbean island.
00:09Welcome, Belén, to From the South.
00:11Hello, Luis, and hello, studios. We're reporting live here from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, particularly.
00:17We're about five kilometers away from Kingstown at the moment.
00:21And as you were just saying, Ben Smith has already started. Actually, the activities, the first activities started all over the nation around May as the people were preparing for this Paramount event.
00:35Very important to the people, very important to the culture.
00:39And let me tell you a little bit about what is happening here, what we saw yesterday.
00:44The week started with a very significant event.
00:48And so one of the most important things that is happening here is that the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines are celebrating their culture and their cultural heritage in particular.
00:58And two musical rhythms, Soca and Calypso, are the high points of this event.
01:04So different competitions are showing the talents, are showing different performances of these two rhythms.
01:11One, Calypso, it's more focused on like a literary approach to social commentary and social discourse and different critiques.
01:21Also, reinstating with a lot of force and a lot of fashion, some very important topics to the peoples.
01:28Also, Soca has to do with dancing and a very energetic dancing.
01:34And what we saw yesterday, and I hope you're seeing images on screen, is the junior competition for this two rhythms.
01:42So we saw young boys and girls showing off their talents.
01:46They're, in some cases, first performances.
01:49They've been preparing for days for this.
01:52And they were on stage showing their performances and also being cheered by the whole community.
01:58It was a really lovely family event as well.
02:02And the intergenerational exchange was very important because the kids were on stage showing their talents.
02:08And the moms, teachers, dads, cousins were cheering from the crowd.
02:14And really happy to see how the young generations are taking this culture, taking this tradition, and taking it to the next level.
02:22So we know that this carnival will have many, many years to come.
02:27So this was just the first activity of the week.
02:30But we have more coming.
02:32So band competitions, steel band competitions in the coming days.
02:37Also, an all-white party.
02:40And everything leading along with sideline events to the main events that will be held on Monday and next Tuesday with Mardi Gras celebration.
02:51So this is a little bit from what's happening here.
02:53Of course, we will continue to bring you all the information, all the images, everything that's happened here.
02:59So the entire world can celebrate along with people from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
03:05I go back to you now, Luis.
03:07Thank you, Belén, for the information.
03:08Of course, we're going to stay tuned with you at what is happening right now in St. Vincent as the people celebrate, as you were saying, heritage, unity, and culture.
