02:58in a season where dustin was banking on a massive payday he now finds himself in a fight to save his

03:12we're done with this dig needing at least a hundred thousand dollars in gold
03:22to pay off his mounting debt dustin's crew have staked everything on finding nuggets at the golden
03:29straits so no walls no nothing finally last week
03:43you get into clay after that gold they had a breakthrough it's very promising if we actually
03:49make it to the bottom now 12 feet down all the signs point to the jackpot they've been dreaming of
03:57there's a decent little picture right there that looks like gold to me the closer we get to bedrock
04:02the better it should get we know there's gold down there this is awesome but a man down oh i got
04:09to travel all the way to uh seattle for injuries that i sustained while i was in service and they
04:14need to get checked up on it it will be a fight to the bitter end
04:19today is going to be our day the sun is out the water's beautiful it's low there's no raging water

06:21inside of there corroded it up and killed it it's not what i needed
06:30the downstream winch is the powerhouse that does all the heavy lifting without it they can't lift
06:37the monster dredge or haul boulders and rock baskets out of the raging white water and they'll have no hope
06:45of reaching bedrock gold
06:50solutions what do we do i don't know what options we have right now i know i'm talking options yeah
06:55that's what we're talking about is options right now short of changing the motor out i don't know

07:05i have to pull the case off i have to pull the gears out and then have to get inside there i can't
07:13do it i don't i don't see any way we need to dredge today so let's dredge and then we'll work on
07:20this after the fact we need to get in the freaking water because getting way late in the season and we
07:27don't have enough gold to even talk about so let's get the dredge in get the divers in out of time and
07:36money dustin has no option other than to push forward but this means all the heavy lifting must be done
07:44by hand well right now the winch is down and uh we got a rock in the way the dredge it's too heavy to
07:53lift but my plan is to try to blow this rock up i just want to keep moving because today's a day

09:07where we uh gambled a little too much and didn't get paid back but hopefully that's not it hopefully i

11:04of a clayish yeah it's got a mix of green and red in it i think these rocks have got to be sitting
11:09on bedrock i think they are too god i hope so this is telling me that we're close to the bottom
11:16old timers told tales of this green clay layer being the last obstacle before bedrock
11:23and the gold that dustin desperately needs to save his claims from the auction block

11:43paul and james dredge the hard pack we have got to be close but without the pulling power of the winch
11:51are forced to remove every rock by brute force

15:00keep this thing safe tonight without the winch 66 year old wes must hand crank the 2500 pound dredge to safety

15:45get the ladder off disassemble into place so we can go take that other winch off right let's figure that out
15:55right now we're taking the winch off and we'll get it fixed in the morning
15:59the downstream winch weighs over 70 pounds one slip and it could knock james into the raging water
16:13got some tension here it comes oh it's on you oh i got it use your hands beautiful
16:22plans is west is gonna fix the winch if they can't get that winch up and running we're gonna run out of
16:30space down here
16:36danielle james you're down today west that winch went down i need you to find me a motor or some parts
16:57off of one of the old winches that we have make something work you're against the clock right now
17:02if we can't get the winch fixed before they get rock locked we have to pull them out of the water
17:07because they can't dig anymore yeah god i thought we had this on lock this year i thought this was
17:14gonna be an easy gimme and here i am having one of the hardest damn years of our freaking gold mining
17:22experience yep and i can't believe how much we're having to dig we just gotta move forward

17:34my key today is to try to keep the divers in and digging the snow is coming down the mountains
17:40in a very rapid fashion so we are out of time now we gotta hit bedrock
17:53danielle james are gonna go down and they're gonna just move rocks as much as they can
17:57there'll be a moment where they can't go any farther there'll be too many rocks piled up around
18:03them and what we're doing right now is we're racing that clock hopefully by the time the winch is fixed
18:10they can still dig i've got wes working real hard to pull some other machines apart and see what we can
18:17make work
18:27i know i've got old winches in here right now we're dead in the water with no way to pull boulders
18:37i'm just gonna take the motor off this one take it up to the site and get that thing working again
18:42the whole power plant for this winch right here is this motor so i'd have to take this off and then
18:49i can just pull this motor out it's imperative that i get this thing fixed so we can get back online
18:55you know your job let's do it that's it do what you can and when you can't do anymore we'll pull you out
19:11once that winch is good we'll be back in business all right you're good to go bro
19:16with almost no hope of hitting bedrock until wes fixes the winch james and danielle must remove
19:25every rock by hand that hole's really deep feels like i'm in the bottom of an ocean right now
19:34water looks like it's starting to get murky already
19:39today this will be my deepest dive yet
19:43i'm a little nervous about the depth guessing between 12 and 15 feet
19:52it's gonna be pretty much pitch black down there
19:56that's really what i dislike the most about diving here is not being able to see
20:02everything's okay you could be down there or you'd be up here with us i'd rather be down there if i were you

21:03with parts pilfered from their winch graveyard at camp wes can now begin performing backcountry surgery
21:10all right james and uh danielle down there they're digging so we're racing against the clock man
21:18let's see if they we can get this done before they can't dig anymore yeah i got this
21:24now all i gotta do is the reverse of what i did at camp all the same steps just in reverse checking
21:29out the gears they look in good shape
21:35i thought there was a lot of room but you know there isn't i know it's just tight down here

24:12water that's it there's no room so i don't know what to do if it's too tight it's too tight
24:21that's all there is to it there's no happy or sad about it this is just work that's it you're done
24:29i feel like i'm in disappointment not the first time this has happened what do you mean the hole gets
24:40narrow so you can't ask two people that's right deeper you go the more this happens that's how
24:45this works there's no way to widen it or you can't because there's too many rocks we'll figure it out
24:51don't worry about it good i feel like i got my total lead down i honestly think that just one
25:00person working down there is all that's going to happen right now until we can get some rocks out of
25:05the way so hopefully west is close with the with the wench

26:58clean the filter james is having problems keeping this damn water because the water's coming up it's
27:07spitting a whole bunch of debris into the foot valve so it's shutting off the hot water freezing dude
27:14is it worth putting it back down with this dirty water i'm sorry to think we should bail yeah
27:21after nearly six hours of back breaking work in the icy 36 degree water dustin is forced to make
27:29a tough call yeah you look like you're shaking already yeah he is i have been shaking for a while
27:38i'm just toughing it and it was just not very smart let's get him dried out and dressed let's pull it up
27:44come out okay we're pulling the diver out it's getting dangerous there's so much debris coming
27:52down the river right now the water's coming up and it's just clogging its foot valve so dustin made
27:58the call take james out and uh live to dive another day that was a tough one so they got the winch working
28:06they're fixing to wind it up i'll go get warmed up we put it back together we're going to test this uh
28:13winch to see if it works if it does we're going to pick up the dredge because this is uh getting out of
28:18hand ready ready
28:22there you go now we're back in working order now a little bit more come back up everything's working
28:46again you're good you're good you're good it's good nailed it hopefully it'll last the rest of the
28:56season we've got to get these rocks out now that we have the winds working we can make some real good
29:01progress i'm happy with the dredge where it's at the water's gonna have to come up four feet to even
29:06touch it

29:18experience levels i was explaining to you about what i felt under there and that you thought maybe
29:25i was chickening out you're like i'm uncomfortable uncomfortable so it's the crying wolf thing

37:44after nearly five months and one abandoned dive site paul has finally discovered bedrock 14 and a half
37:52feet down we're all ecstatic paul this is amazing god you don't know how happy i am right now
38:02this could be the start of a golden pastry that will save their season
38:08paul found a bedrock wall that's sloping down
38:11similar to that up here like this here we're looking for the bottom of that this is a good start
38:17we're going to keep going full steam this is like checkpoint one i wish we'd hit this a week into our
38:25start but here we are about to start snowing on us now let's find out how much gold we can find
38:34paul's found sloping bedrock from here he can follow it to the deepest point and a life-changing deposit of gold
38:42i've had my hopes up four times than i can count how vertical is it or is it starting to flatten out
