00:30Around 177, Irenaeus was sent to Lugdunum, present-day Lyon in Gaul.
00:38After the martyrdom of Bishop Potin, Irenaeus was chosen to succeed him.
00:43He thus became a pillar of the Church in the emerging West.
00:46His major work? Against Heresies, a fundamental text in which he rigorously refutes the Gnostic doctrines that threatened Christian unity and faith.
00:56He emphasizes the importance of the tradition transmitted by the apostles and affirms that "where the Church is, there is the Spirit of God."
01:06Irenaeus died around the year 2002, probably martyred under the emperor Septimius Severus.
01:12His cult spread slowly, but his influence continued to grow in the centuries that followed.
