00:00Governing as a servant of God
00:30In 1002, he became King of Germany, then Holy Roman Emperor in 1014, crowned by Pope Benedict VIII. But unlike so many other sovereigns, Henry did not thirst for domination. He wanted to unite Christian Europe in faith and justice.
00:51He founded abbeys, restored cathedrals, and defended the rights of the Church. He supported the monastic reform of Cluny and fought against clerical abuses, all while administering his empire with rigor.
01:08Married to Saint Cunégonde, their union is chaste, offered to God. Together, they govern with wisdom, distribute their wealth to the poor, and live in remarkable simplicity for sovereigns.
01:24Henry did not shy away from war when justice demanded it, but he always sought peace. He was a model of a Christian king: just, humble, brilliant, and devoted. He died in 1024.
01:40Upon his death, the people mourned him as a saint. He was canonized in 1146 by Pope Eugene III. He has since been honored as the patron saint of sovereigns, the sick, sterile children, and those rejected by religious orders.
01:57Saint Henry, you Emperor with the heart of monks, inspire our leaders to govern justly and teach us that true greatness is found in humility.
