00:00Camille de l'Elysse, giant of charity, founder of an order serving the sick.
00:12He was born in 1550 in Abruz, Italy. His father was a soldier. His mother died early.
00:21At a very young age, Camille found himself left to his own devices. He fell into gambling, debauchery, and violence.
00:28He becomes a mercenary, leads an unstable and dissolute life, puts an incurable wound on his leg, the nail to the ground.
00:38It was in this weakness that God touched him. He converted at the age of 25, struck by the misery of the sick at the Saint-Jacques des Incurables hospital in Rome.
00:49There he begins to care for the poor and the dying with tenderness, where so many see only bodies to be discarded.
01:00He understands that care is a mission of love, not management.
01:05In 1582, he was ordained a priest. The following year, he founded a new congregation.
01:14The ministers of the disabled, also called the Camilians, recognizable by the Red Cross on their black uniforms.
01:22The Brothers of Saint Camillus intervene everywhere. Hospitals, streets, battlefields, epidemic sites—they give of themselves selflessly, even at the risk of their lives.
01:35Camillus was said to have invented the modern hospital. He died in Rome in 1614, on his knees, with the crucifix in his arms.
01:47He was canonized in 1746. Today, he is the patron saint of the sick, hospitals, healthcare workers and nurses.
01:58Saint Camillus, give us your ardent heart. Teach us to serve Jesus in every suffering face.
